Topography Guided Lasik New generation of laser technology now available in Arizona

Topography Guided Lasik is the newest advancement in Lasik technology that was designed to produce results that are superior to the older Custom Wavefront technology. With this technology, the cornea is mapped with the detail of close to 7000 points of light (compared to only 200 in Wavefront technology). This precision mapping of the cornea is then transferred electronically to the computer that runs the Excimer laser, and the software then provides the information to reshape the cornea into an optimal configuration to focus light with its Final Fit Software. The resulting reshaping leads to an “Optimized” reshaping of the cornea combined with a Custom Aspheric Treatment Zone that preserves the natural curvature profile of the cornea. The result, according to the FDA studies, is an improvement in vision both in daylight and at night, with many patients achieving “Super - Vision” status.

• Advocates of the older “Custom Wavefront” technology will state that their mapping of the visual system takes into account irregularities in the cornea as well as the crystalline lens. However, these advocates do not take into account that the crystalline lens changes frequently (because of its normal task of focusing) and also changes over time (significant irregularities can become more noticeable after age 40 and beyond, and particularly as lens dysfunction leads eventually to a condition of cataract.) Therefore measuring irregularities in a single moment in time does not account for the dynamic changes of the crystalline lens, and reshaping the cornea to accommodate the lens factor will not correct the focusing optimally for very much time, and in fact, may induce corneal irregularities that will eventually become symptomatic. The theory of Topography Guided Lasik is that the cornea will be precisely reshaped and have an optimized profile on its own that should not change. If the Crystalline Lens changes (as we always expect it to do), the patient that has had Topography Guided Lasik will always have a cornea that has a custom optimized profile to focus light at its best even if there are irregularities in the crystalline lens.

• The Topography Guided Lasik procedure combines the benefits of a precise customized reshaping of any topographical irregularities with the optimized reshaping of the corneal profile to improve night vision as well as daylight vision. This is the first LASIK procedure that demonstrated, through the FDA studies, improved night vision after surgery compared to using glasses or contact lenses.

Jewel’s Bakery & Café Offers gluten-free eats

J

ulie Moreno has always had a passion for baking.

However, it wasn’t until one of her daughters was diagnosed with celiac disease - an autoimmune disorder of the small intestine caused by a reaction to gluten — that the longtime baker made the decision to start baking gluten-free (wheat less).

“Our family has always loved creating and eating delicious food, but the diagnosis threw a wrench in our lives and we were required to rethink our way of cooking and baking,” Moreno, a mother of six says.

Moreno tried buying gluten-free options, but found that the conventional items weren’t only overpriced but were also unpleasant. Determined, she decided to take matters into her own hands.

The decision proved to be not only healthier for her daughter, but a successful business venture as well for the baker.

“In late 2011, I began baking out of my own kitchen and started an online store offering gluten-free baked goods like breads, rolls, pies, pastries and cupcakes,” Moreno says.

“One day I’m baking in my kitchen for my family and then the next thing I knew I was running a successful online business, selling gluten-free items,” she said. “It was overwhelming but exciting all at the same time.”

It immediately became a success. Shortly after launching, Moreno began receiving special orders on baked goods and treats, showing there wasn’t just interest but a need.

After a two years Moreno decided to take her business offline and into a store. In December 2013, she launched Jewel’s Bakery and Café, a hybrid with an open concept and modern-contemporary feel nestled in the heart of Arcadia.

I’ve lived here my whole life and there just isn’t anything like it,” Moreno says. “We are the only dedicated glutenfree, full-service bakery and cafe offering fresh baked goods and special orders in the area.”

Jewel’s Bakery and Cafe offers dining both inside and outdoors. Upon arriving patrons can order from the menu of gluten-free breads, baked goods and sweet treats, as well as light cafe fare. All of which are made from scratch with her signature flour blends that can be purchased in the restaurant.

"Because there aren’t many options for people eating gluten-free, I wanted to provide a place that allows people to watch their dietary restrictions and still have the ability to enjoy great food and a welcoming atmosphere,” Moreno says.

Black Mangabeys Black mangabeys are primates from Central African tropical and subtropical forests. According to the IUCN, these primates are declining in population and are nearing threatened status. Not much is known about them though they do prefer to eat fruits and seeds. They also tend to frequently use the middle height of the forest canopy. The biggest threats to mangabeys are rampant poaching for the bushmeat trade and loss of habitat due to deforestation. Both males and females have distinctive ear tufts and crests of hair giving their heads a somewhat triangular shaped appearance, not unlike some Dr. Seuss characters.

Arizona Association for Gifted and Talented 40 Years of Advocacy

“According to the National Association for Gifted Children’s 2013 State of the States in Gifted Education Report, in public schools alone, there are more than 86,500 identified gifted and talented students in Arizona,” Erica Bailin, board member for the Arizona Association for Gifted and Talented (AAGT), says. “Because gifted children have unique needs, providing education and support for parents and caregivers, as well as connections with other parents of gifted children, is critical.”

Arizona Association for Gifted and Talented is a nonprofit organization of educators, parents and community members working together to better meet the unique needs of gifted and talented students in Arizona. AAGT provides an annual conference for parents, educators and community members as well as an annual Parent Institute.

This year, AAGT celebrates its 40th anniversary advocating for the diverse population of gifted and talented students in the state. The organization will host a unique Parent Institute, which will take place Saturday, Sept. 27, at Grand Canyon University and will feature speakers, educational exhibitions, and interactive breakout sessions by professionals in the gifted community. Dr. Amy Serin, founder of The Serin Center, a multidisciplinary center for psychological assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of adults and children, will serve as the one-day event’s keynote speaker.

“The goal of this program is to teach parents and caregivers effective tools to address and nurture their gifted children’s needs,” Bailin says.

In addition to hosting the Parent Institute this fall, AAGT has been chosen to host the National Association of Gifted Children’s 62nd Annual Convention.

“While we are still in the planning stages, the multiday program is focused on ‘Everything Gifted Under the Sun,’ and it is a remarkable opportunity to bring in state, national, and internationally renowned researchers and speakers on the topic to our own backyard – and our own local families,” Bailin says.

This month, Dr. Borhan and his colleagues will hit the road again, in honor of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, educating and screening for prostate cancer.

The mobile unit is equipped with an exam room where a PSA – prostate specific antigen non-fasting blood test will be done. A board certified urologist will perform a digital rectal exam, testicular exam and consultation. Participants will know the results of their physical exam immediately, and blood tests in a week.

DIY Fixes for Common Health Annoyances We have all overdone it on a Saturday night, or put on extra pounds in all the wrong places. However, how do we undo the damage?

Bloating, heartburn, and other common health annoyances can sometimes seem impossible to get rid of. Fortunately, there are some quick home remedies to some of life’s peskiest issues.

So, what do you do when the unpleasant strikes?

Bloating and gas One study found that 75 percent of people with irritable bowel syndrome saw a major reduction in symptoms, including bloating and flatulence, after taking peppermint oil capsules. Therefore, the next time your stomach is rumbling and you’re experiencing flatulence consider sucking on a peppermint to alleviate inflammation and pain in the gastrointestinal tract.

Heartburn

Dry skin? Oatmeal may be the cure for that. Full of vitamins, minerals and lipids, oatmeal contains both antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties and as such is ideal for sensitive skin and to treat a variety of skin disorders from poison ivy to eczema. Make an oatmeal scrub from home with oatmeal, baking soda and water and leave on the area for 10 minutes before washing off.

You can also purchase over the counter skin product that contain oatmeal but it’s recommended doing a patch test on your skin as you could be sensitive to the products other ingredients.

What causes it? It is caused by acid reflux, which occurs when the ring of muscle that allows food into your stomach to relax when it shouldn’t. The searing pain in your chest known as heartburn occurs when stomach acid flows the wrong way back up the esophagus. Avoid heartburn by staying away from “trigger” foods such as caffeine, chocolate or anything spicy. Should heartburn strike, reach for an apple. Sweet apples are great at reducing acid reflux symptoms by neutralizing excess acids and aiding in digestion.

Bad breath Halitosis—aka stinky breath—comes from certain gasses released from your body or by bacteria, either in your mouth or your sinuses. The solution? Treating this underlying issue is easier than one might think. Make sure you are brushing and flossing your teeth daily to keep harmful bacteria at bay. Throughout the day, avoid eating foods with potent odors (such as garlic, onions and coffee). Also, drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep breath fresh.

Understanding Cholesterol

While cholesterol is too complex to categorize so easily, the widely known complications of high cholesterol make it easy to generalize cholesterol as something detrimental to human health. However, there's more to cholesterol than meets the eye.

Where does cholesterol come from?

The human body makes all the cholesterol it needs and circulates it through the blood. However, foods, including meat, certain dairy products and poultry, also contain cholesterol, and the liver actually produces more cholesterol if you eat a diet that is high in saturated and trans fats.

Why is cholesterol potentially dangerous?

According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, high blood cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease. If your body has too much cholesterol in its blood that excess cholesterol can form plaque in the walls of your arteries, gradually causing a hardening and narrowing of the arteries. Narrow arteries slow blood flow to the heart, which needs both the blood and the oxygen that blood carries in order to function at full strength. If plaque buildup in the arterial walls slows or blocks off that blood flow, a heart attack may result.

Bad vs. good?

Cholesterol does not dissolve in the blood, so carriers known as lipoproteins must transport it through the bloodstream. Two types of lipoprotein perform this function, low-density lipoproteins, (LDL) and highdensity lipoproteins (HDL). LDL is what's commonly referred to as "bad" cholesterol because it contributes to the buildup of plaque, the thick and hard deposits that can line the arterial walls and impede blood flow. HDL is the "good" cholesterol, as it helps remove LDL from the arteries. According to the American Heart Association, experts believe HDL gathers LDL before carrying it away from the arteries and back to the liver, where it is ultimately broken down and passed from the body.

What affects cholesterol levels?

Cholesterol levels are affected by lifestyle choices you can control and additional factors you cannot.

Diet is entirely within your control. A diet that's high in

saturated fat is unhealthy, and the American Hospital Association recommends a diet that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, poultry,

fish and nuts. Avoid red meat, sugary foods, and beverages as much as possible.

Weight is another controllable risk factor for high

cholesterol. Losing weight can lower LDL while increasing HDL.

Exercise. Regular physical activity can lower LDL and raise HDL levels. The AHA notes that 40 minutes of aerobic exercise performed at moderate to vigorous intensity three to four times per week is enough to lower LDL and high blood pressure.

Age. Cholesterol levels rise with age. You can make

healthy lifestyle choices to combat the impact that aging has on your cholesterol levels.

Gender is another uncontrollable factor that affects

cholesterol levels. Before reaching the age of menopause, women have lower total cholesterol levels than men of the same age. However, after they reach the age of menopause, women's LDL levels typically rise.

Heredity. High blood cholesterol can run in families, so

your genes might just be influencing how much cholesterol your body is making.

How great is my risk of heart disease or heart attack?

The more risk factors, including high LDL levels and factors listed above, you have, the greater your risk of developing heart disease or having a heart attack.

Signs & Symptoms Ovarian cancer frequently goes undiagnosed until it has spread to the pelvis and other areas of the abdomen.

Recognizing the early symptoms of ovarian cancer can help women get the treatment they need before the disease progresses.

Cancers that originate in the cells of the ovary are classified as ovarian cancer. Tumors can occur in the epithelium or lining cells of the ovary itself or the fallopian tubes or lining of the abdomen. The American Cancer Society estimates that 21,980 new cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2014, and approximately 14,000 deaths are expected to be caused by ovarian cancer in that same year.

The Ovarian Cancer National Alliance says women need to know ovarian cancer is the deadliest of all gynecologic cancers. That's because the earliest symptoms are frequently subtle and can be confused with other conditions. If ovarian cancer is detected before it has spread, there is a 90 percent survival rate. However, only 15 percent of ovarian cancer cases in the United States are diagnosed early.

Some of the earliest signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer include: • Bloating • Pelvic and abdominal pain • Feeling full quickly when eating • Urinary urgency or frequency • Fatigue • Back pain • Menstrual irregularities • Indigestion • Pain with intercourse • Constipation 28

According to the Mayo Clinic, certain risk factors can increase a woman's chances of developing ovarian cancer: age, inherited gene mutation, menstruation began before the age of 12, estrogen hormone replacement therapy, smoking, use of an intrauterine device, never being pregnant, fertility treatment and polycystic ovary syndrome.

No specific test exists to detect ovarian cancer. A Pap test will screen for cervical cancer, but such a test is ineffective at detecting ovarian cancer. A doctor will conduct a pelvic examination and feel the uterus and ovaries. Imaging tests, such as ultrasound and CT scans, can help determine if there are abnormalities in the ovaries. A blood test, which will detect the protein CA 125, can help to determine if ovarian cancer is present. If cancer is suspected, a sample of tissue and abdominal fluid will be used to confirm ovarian cancer.

There are four stages of ovarian cancer. Stage I means cancer has been found in one or both of the ovaries. Stage II means cancer has spread to other parts of the pelvis. In Stage III, ovarian cancer has spread to the abdomen. Stage IV cancer is found outside of the abdomen.

Treatment of ovarian cancer typically involves the surgical removal of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus and nearby lymph nodes. In addition, doctors may remove a fold of fatty abdominal tissues called the omentum, where ovarian cancer often spreads. Afterward, chemotherapy is frequently used to kill remaining cancer cells.

Ovarian cancer is a serious condition that is not often diagnosed until it has spread. Women can be on the lookout for subtle clues that can indicate ovarian cancer and then alert their doctors immediately upon detection of such symptoms.

Children's Eye Injuries

The American Academy of Ophthalmology says that eye injuries are a significant health problem in the United States, second only to cataracts as a cause of visual impairment.

Each year, more than 2.5 million eye injuries occur, and 50,000 people permanently lose part or all of their vision.

While projectiles and flying debris account for the vast majority of eye injuries across all age groups, common types of eye injuries are:

Chemical burns. This is when a child gets any type of

chemical into the eye. Chemicals may be household cleaning objects. These injuries require immediate medical attention because they can cause permanent vision loss.

Bruising. Black eyes or ecchymosis occurs from some sort

of trauma to the eye. The tissue around the eye becomes bruised, but usually the eye itself is spared. However, only a doctor can determine if the eye is unscathed.

Corneal abrasions. The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped covering at the front of the eye. A foreign item entering the eye, like sand or debris, may scratch the cornea. A fingernail or an insect that flies into the eye also can scratch it. A doctor can determine the severity of the abrasion and if any treatment is required.

Hyphema. This is a condition of blood in the anterior chamber of the eye where fluid normally flows in and out to nourish eye tissues. Hyphema is caused by an injury, and blood can be seen in the eyeball. It requires prompt medical attention.

Eyelid lacerations. This is a cut on the eyelid. An eyelid

laceration may be paired with bruising or even corneal abrasion, depending on what struck the eye.

Fractures. The orbit is the bony area around the eyeball,

and when the bones around the eye are broken, the condition is called orbital fracture. This may cause severe eye damage depending on where the eye was struck. Fractures require immediate medical assistance, and facial reconstruction may be necessary.

Burns. Sunburn not only occurs to the skin but can affect

the eyes, too. It is important to wear UV-protective sunglasses outside.

Although present in much smaller concentrations, testosterone is key to many functions of the female body.

estosterone is commonly thought of as a male hormone, but people may be surprised to learn that testosterone is present in the female body as well.

Testosterone serves several purposes in the female body, and could be instrumental in some therapies, including menopause and low sexual drive.

Testosterone is a steroid hormone found in the androgen group, and is derived from cholesterol. Women produce testosterone in their ovaries and adrenal glands. Even after a woman enters menopause, her ovaries will still produce testosterone. Although women produce only a fraction of the testosterone found in men, it still serves some key functions in the female body.

Women of childbearing age may be surprised to learn that testosterone, in addition to estrogen and progesterone plays a role in fertility. Testosterone, which peaks around the middle of the menstrual cycle when ovulation occurs, can increase the chances of conception, according to a paper published in the Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology Journal. Some androgens, such as testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone, may work together to encourage development of eggs in the ovary in the early stages of oocyte (egg) maturation.

Muscle development One of the main functions of testosterone in the female body is muscle development. It is the key in maintaining the structure, cell growth, and function of muscles in the body. Varicose veins are very common; anyone can develop varicose veins, but women are at a greater risk than men are. Common symptoms of varicose veins are pain and swelling, night cramps, discoloration of the skin, tired legs with prolonged standing and popped up veins.

Similar to varicose veins are spider veins, which are smaller and closer to the skin surface.

Pregnancy, age, and stretching of the veins are contributors to varicose veins. Being overweight, standing for long periods of time and wearing restrictive clothing are other contributors.

There are a number of treatments that have been developed for varicose veins. The most modern available is called EVLT (endovenous laser ablation therapy). A laser is used in a 45-minute procedure to close the incompetent vein. This procedure is performed right at the facility under local anesthetics. Another of the many treatments offered is sclerotherapy, where a solution is injected into a vein to scar it and close it.

Q. My pain starts from the neck, down to shoulders and arm, and increases when I turn. What could this be?

A. The common causes of neck pain include abnormal biomechanics (inappropriate posture during daily activity), neck injury, overuse of the neck muscle and joint. If you suffer from neck pain with discomfort in the arm, shoulder or hand, this may indicate the nerve around the neck joint is affected as well. All of these conditions could be related to cervical spondylopathy.

Cervical spondylopathy is a term used to describe the degenerated change of the neck joint. This may be caused by injury of the cartilage, which is the soft tissue between bones, thickening of the joint ligaments or formation of bone spurs. The changes can pinch the spinal nerves that extend out of the neck joint, causing pain and a numbness sensation through the shoulder, hand and mid upper back. If it becomes worse, patients may experience headache, dizziness, visual disturbance, balance difficulties.

Although the degenerated change of joint is considered part of the aging process, it may be seen in the working age group, such as those who spend much of the day in front of the computer, and those whose occupation requires they remain in a standing position for hours at a time.

After ruling out the serious trauma, tumor, arthritic change and pathological disorder, spinal joint manipulation is primarily used for treating cervical spondylopathy. There is soft tissue therapy being applied with the manipulation. To manage pain and discomfort, acupuncture is being used to stabilize the manual treatment.

Q. How do I know if I have gallstones and if medical treatment is necessary?

A. The gallbladder is a storage place for bile which is a liquid produced in the liver. After eating fats, as your body begins the digestive process, your gallbladder contracts and pushes the stored bile into the common bile duct, which brings the liquid to your small intestine to aid digestion. Gallstones form when the liquid bile hardens and changes to hard pieces of stone-like material, which then can block the gallbladder from emptying or cause a blockage within the common bile duct causing symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, or what is often called a gallbladder attack.

Other symptoms may include constant heartburn, abdominal pain and bloating after you eat, or pain radiating to your back or right shoulder. Some people will experience fever, chills, yellowing of the skin and eyes, dark color urine and gray color stools. Severe pain attacks or constant pain that interferes with your daily life may mean that surgery is the best option.

There are now very minimally invasive surgical procedures available for gallbladder removal.

These methods typically mean you will not have to stay in the hospital overnight, you will recover quicker, and you will have little to no scarring.

It is critical to seek medical treatment to ensure the gallbladder is removed before it ruptures.

Q. What alternatives are available for

chronic pain treatment when medications, physical therapy, injection therapy, and surgery all fail adequately to control pain?

A. Many people suffer with pain. Many of those who suffer from chronic pain after trying the aforementioned treatments without adequate pain relief feel they will be relegated to high-dose opioid medication in order to cope with the pain. Opioid medication treatment can be debilitating in and of itself, making it difficult to function on a day-to-day basis.

A relatively new treatment to mainstream medicine is spinal cord stimulation. Spinal cord stimulation is a pain treatment modality based on reducing the intensity, duration and frequency of pain. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting the pain pathways as they travel through the spinal cord. For appropriate patients, excellent pain relief can be obtained with this treatment from any number of pain syndromes, including failed back surgery syndrome, phantom limb pain, pain resulting from trauma, and pain from diabetes or other systemic diseases.

In addition to inhibiting the pain pathways, it also works in modulating the sympathetic nervous system, which is helpful in treating pain resulting from complex regional pain syndrome (which results in severe pain to normal stimulation, such as light touch).

Spinal cord stimulation has been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of several pain syndromes, which can reduce and possibly eliminate, relying on opioid medications for pain control.

Q. My child is not vaccinated. Should

I worry about the current measles outbreak?

A. Measles is considered one of the most deadly childhood diseases and is highly contagious. While it appears as a rash and fever, complications can include ear infection, pneumonia, encephalitis and death. Pregnant women infected with measles can have early births or miscarriages. In 2000, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) declared measles eliminated in the United States due to widespread use of the vaccination. However, measles has run widespread in other countries.

Unfortunately, between Jan. 1 and July 18, 2014, the CDC reported 580 cases of measles in the United States with 18 outbreaks.

Most of these cases involved unvaccinated individuals who had traveled outside of the United States and brought the disease back to their communities. Unvaccinated children will most likely contract measles, if exposed.

As a result, measles vaccinations are recommended for children at 12 and 24 months old. Children need two doses of the vaccination for full protection. If you plan to travel outside the United States, it is highly recommended to vaccinate your children long before departure. You can find more information about measles at www.cdc.gov/measles.

Q. Do all non-medical home care companies provide continuing education for their caregivers?

A. At Sun Cities CareGivers, each caregiver

applicant must provide proof of at least two years of proven caregiver experience before being hired.

Sometimes the experience includes caregiver certification with experience working in an assisted living community or home health aide training in a nursing home or hospital on track to become a licensed CNA. In either case, a minimum of two years of hands-on experience must be validated but certainly, the classroom training is a plus.

Frequently, our applicants have “years” of personal care experience as witnessed by the ages and knowledge of our care staff. It lends well to the saying of “older is better.”

A. In the past, hearing aids were built with what is known as a prescriptive circuit. This means that any time your hearing loss changed, you would have to change your hearing aids to continue to receive the desired level of performance. It was common for wearers of these types of hearing aids to have to replace their equipment every two or three years.

Now, most distributors are fitting programmable instruments that are capable of being adjusted, to fit your future needs, as your hearing loss becomes worse. This has resulted in the average life expectancy of hearing aids to double and even triple in some cases. In many cases, a person can wear the same pair of hearing aids until the literally “wear out.”

If you are wearing a pair of programmable instruments and you are experiencing difficulty, you should contact your local hearing health care professional. The Pros & Cons of Waiting to Start a Family

resent-day couples are opting to start families later than their parents and grandparents before them. It is common for grown children to live with their parents well into their 20s, and many are opting for marriage, and children later in life, if they plan to have any children at all.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the average age for men to get married is 27 and for women 25.5. However, couples who come from religious families, in which living together before marriage is often frowned upon may get married earlier. On the flip side, couples who live in communities and cities where cohabitating is readily accepted may wait until their thirties before tying the knot. In such communities, starting a family is often put on hold. In the 1970s, many women were having children in their early twenties, whereas now women tend to have their first child in their mid- to late twenties.

Although there is no right and wrong answer as to when is the best time to start a family, there are some advantages and disadvantages to waiting to have children.

Disadvantages Starting a family later in life can seem like a good idea but may cause some unnecessary obstacles. One of the first challenges is biological. Aging may make it more difficult for women to conceive a child. Not only is the number of unfertilized eggs a woman carries finite, there is a set number of years to conceive before reaching menopause.

However, men, too, also have varying degrees of infertility, as they get older. One study conducted at Soroka University in Israel found semen quantity peaked for men between the ages of 30 and 35, while overall semen quantity was found to be lowest after age 55. Sperm motility is best before age 25 and lowest after age 55.

Aging as well as sexual abstinence can have effects on the health of sperm.

of having a miscarriage, and an older woman's body may not recover from childbirth as quickly as a younger woman’s may.

In addition to the physical challenges associated with waiting to have children, couples who wait longer to have children may find themselves the oldest parents at peerrelated events. School and extracurricular activities may make age disparities more evident. A couple who does not have a child until their forties may not have as many years as younger parents to see their children as adults with families of their own.

Advantages Couples, who wait longer for marriage and children, may be more financially secure than couples who start their families earlier. They may have already begun saving a nest egg and have established careers with high salaries.

Individuals who have had a few years to acclimate to married life or who have enjoyed all of the activities of singlehood may end up in more stable relationships in the end.

Children of parents who have a higher education may be more likely to succeed in school, according to scholars at the Office of History and Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Parents may interact with their children more to help them to do well academically. Since they have already completed their own schooling, older parents may not need to continue education or take time away from their children for their own educational needs.

Engaging in enjoyable nights out socially before having children may help parents not to feel guilty about missing something as they raise their children. Such men and women will have already sowed their wild oats and will now be able to devote more attention to family life.

However, raising a child does require a lot of energy and time, which may prove more difficult for older parents.

Waiting longer to start a family has distinct pros and cons. ultimately, couples need to weigh their own situations and make decisions that best fit their lifestyles.

Wrinkle Treatment Reviews & Tips

here are many natural components of aging and wrinkles are no exception. As we age the skin becomes less elastic, thinner and drier. The skin is also less able to protect itself from damage. As result, wrinkles and fine lines can begin forming.

Because many times people are judged first by outward appearances, women can become self-conscious of their wrinkles as they get into their 40s and 50s. Today, a number of procedures aimed at reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines exist. The key is finding one that works for you and your budget. Here are some options to consider.

Gain a little weight. No one is advocating going on an

eating binge! However, a new study published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery analyzed pictures of the faces of 186 pairs of identical twins, along with extensive questionnaires each twin filled out about lifestyle and skin care. The study found that for twin pairs under 40, the heavier one (a four-point difference in the (BMI) body mass index) looked significantly older. However, surprisingly, after 40 that same four-point difference in (BMI) made the heavier twin look significantly younger.

Once you reach 40, it may pay to increase your weight by a few pounds, which can fill out your face and reduce the appearance of wrinkling.

Explore wrinkle creams. Wrinkle creams are found in

department stores and drug stores across the country.

Most promise dramatic results. It is unlikely that you'll get the same results from creams and lotions as you would from a cosmetic procedure. But depending upon the ingredients in the products, you could see improvements in the skin over time. Most ingredients are antioxidants that help reverse cell damage caused by free radicals. Fruit acids are another popular ingredient, which exfoliate the skin to reveal newer skin underneath.

Skin resurfacing. There are a number of treatments that

damage the outer layer of the skin to promote newer, younger skin to grow in its place. Chemical peels, dermabrasion, or laser resurfacing are just some of these techniques. According to the Mayo Clinic, laser resurfacing is an effective treatment for minor facial flaws. It can wipe out fine to moderate wrinkles, liver or age spots, correct uneven skin tones, and even reduce the appearance of acne or chickenpox scars. Because the epidermis, or outer layer of skin, is removed, it's common to experience some irritation, redness or itching on areas treated.

Medicinal botulinum toxin type A. This is the same

bacteria that causes food poisoning, marketed under the popular name Botox(R). However, in the medicinal version, a much lower concentration is purified and injected into muscles to prevent contraction. When muscles aren't contracted, the skin on top of them flattens and appears less wrinkled.

Injectable fillers. Collagen fillers and other products are

injected under the skin to smooth out wrinkles. They can be effective when done correctly.

Surgery. This is one of the most expensive options for treating wrinkles. Face and eye lifts can pull the skin taut and smooth out wrinkles.

Certain controllable factors also contribute to wrinkles.

Therefore, elimination of these factors can lessen the chance for wrinkle formation.

Quit smoking. Blood supply changes in the skin as a

result of smoking, which can speed up the natural aging process. Simply quitting can help stave off wrinkling of the skin.

Avoid UV exposure. Ultraviolet light from the sun and tanning beds can damage the skin. This can dry out skin, removing elasticity and even thinning out the skin years before nature would. UV exposure breaks down the skin's connective tissue, contributing to sagging and wrinkling.

Always use a sun protection product when out in the sun, and avoid the strongest rays.

Be conscious of repeated facial expressions. Squinting,

smiling and other repeated gestures with the face can cause lines to form under the skin. For those who find themselves squinting, they can try sunglasses or have their vision checked. Smiling cannot be avoided; however, one can stretch the muscles of the face to improve in strength and flexibility.

Eat and drink healthily. The skin is the largest organ of

the body. Just like the heart and lungs, it needs healthy foods to stay in top form. Be sure to include a balanced diet and plenty of hydrating beverages in the plan for healthy skin. Avoid overindulgence in caffeine, sodium and alcohol, all of which can dehydrate and possibly compound skin dryness.

Exercise gets the heart pumping and brings oxygen to all

necessary systems of the body. Again, with skin being the largest organ, exercise can help promote a healthy appearance and ward off premature wrinkling.

Use care when washing. Tugging and rubbing of the

skin can damage connective fibers, leading to wrinkles.

Massage the face gently when washing and avoid harsh exfoliating products that can scratch and damage the skin.

Screen Time & Childhood Obesity The World Health Organization (WHO) defines overweight and obesity as an abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. Based on the Body Mass Index (BMI), people with a BMI of greater than or equal to 25 are classified as overweight and those greater than or equal to 30 as obese.

According to data from the WHO, worldwide obesity has nearly doubled since 1980. Obesity is a leading risk for global deaths. Approximately 3.4 million adults die every year due to it while 44 percent suffer from diabetes, 23 percent from ischemic heart disease burden and between 7 to 41 percent of certain cancers, all attributable to obesity and overweight.

As of 2012, more than 40 million children under the age of 5 were overweight or obese. Approximately 16 to 33 percent children and adolescents in the U.S. are obese.

While there are many primary causes of obesity, excessive screen time has been a major contributor. A sedentary lifestyle spent in front of computers and video game consoles contributes to poor health. Of the leading industrialized countries, the United States has the highest obesity statistics, and Canada is not far behind.

Smartphones and tablets appear to have staying power. The Pew Research Center confirms that smartphone penetration has surpassed the 50 percent mark among mobile subscribers.

Many others are routinely using tablets to access books, television shows, movies and magazines.

In multiscreen homes, televisions are still king. According to a 2012 Nielsen report, the average American over the age of two spends more than 34 hours a week, or more than 4 hours per day, watching live television. Those findings should raise an eyebrow, as health experts warn that excessive screen time can be hazardous to one's health.

Obesity can impact cholesterol, cardiovascular health, risk for type 2 diabetes, and risk for stroke. Excessive screen time can lead to sleep and eating disorders, interfere with a person's ability to focus and negatively affect a person's performance at school or work. Getting a family active and reducing time spent in front of a screen can have profound effects, and reducing screen time doesn't have to be difficult.

Gradually implement changes Families immersed in electronic devices can cut down on screen time slowly and over the course of several weeks rather than tuning out cold turkey. Start by reducing time spent watching television or playing video games by one hour per week, and gradually reduce time spent devoted to such activities in the ensuing weeks.

Hide devices The mantra, 'out of sight, out of mind' can work with respect to digital devices. If tablets or smartphones are tucked away, family members may feel less inclined to reach for them at any given time. Just as you wouldn't stock your pantry full of fattening foods while trying to lose weight, don't make digital devices readily available throughout the day.

Keep televisions out of the bedroom Children who have televisions in their bedrooms tend to watch an additional 90 minutes of programming per day than those who do not have televisions in their room.

Keep the television in a shared area of the house so that time spent watching the TV can be monitored and adjusted.

Establish guidelines Set firm limits on how much screen time will be allowed per day and stick with it. Adults can lead by example.

Plan more family activities Boredom can easily give way to time spent fooling around on the Internet or channel surfing. Parents should have a cache of ideas at the ready that promote active family time. Neighborhood walks or tossing around a baseball in the yard are enjoyable activities that cut back on time spent being sedentary. Encourage indoor activities, such as puzzles or board games, if the weather is not cooperating.

Know your measurements Measure the parts of your body that most define your shape: your hips, shoulders, waist and bust. Wear underwear (but not shapewear) when measuring hips, and wrap the tape around the fullest part of your hips and butt for the most accurate measurement. Don’t tug too tightly or loosely when measuring; the number in the center front is your hip size.

To measure shoulders, keep your back straight and your shoulders relaxed, and extend the tape from the outer edge of one shoulder to the outer edge of the other.

To measure your waist, bend forward and note where your body creases – that’s where to measure.

For bust, wear a top without a bra, which often alters measurements. Wrap the tape across your back and under your shoulder blades and arms – and around the fullest part of your breasts.

Own your plus-size, petite or tall body. You have probably heard the statement, “Real women have curves.”

Yes, they do, but there are also real women with smaller busts; long and lean women, and some built like the ancient fertility goddess statues. All of us are real.

Plus-sized women. Highlight your assets .Shapely legs and well-toned arms are meant to be flaunted.

Petite women. Opt for pieces that come in naturally shorter lengths, such as cigarette pants, knee-length, or higher skirts and three-quarter and shorter sleeve tops and jackets. Showing more skin will make your limbs look longer.

Tall women. Wear high heels if you want to – just because you are taller does not mean they are off limits.

Ways to Outsmart the Overspending Impulse Studies have shown that we are inclined to pay more for items when we are sad. However, we all know that the happiness we achieve through spending is fleeting.

Many of us have emotional triggers that lead to overspending. Understanding how the need for stress relief or the need to demonstrate your own self-worth can lead to overspending is essential in order to curb the dangerous habit.

Women especially can have a tendency to take on a what-Idon’t-know-can’t-hurt-me mentality when it comes to spending. We convince ourselves that is OK to overspend because we are celebrating a promotion or because we are pleasers by nature and want to buy a great gift for our spouse or best friend’s birthday.

Here is some advice on how to understand the psychology of overspending and what you can do stop it.

Get real about your financials. Sit down with your spouse at least once a month to have a heart-to-heart about your financials. Make sure you both understand what the budget will allow for in spending that month, and more importantly, plan how you are going to meet your saving goals.

Establish an “Operation Saving” plan. Once you know what your budget is, start mapping out what expenses you can and cannot cut and set savings goals. Be very specific. If you buy Starbucks every morning that has to 56

be accounted for in your spending report. If you have been sneakily hiding clothing purchases from your spouse, then it is time to fess up. The specificity will override the “vagueness trap” that allows us to fool ourselves about how much we are really spending. The more specific your plan, the easier it will be for you to hold yourself accountable to it.

Do not let the psychology of the sale get the best of you. If you are a chronic over spender, sales pose a special temptation. When there is a great sale, two factors are usually used to justify spending. First off, we fear that if we don’t take advantage of the sale now we might not be able to get that item later. Secondly, most women love to feel like they have gotten a great deal when they are shopping. Going over budget is going over budget. It doesn’t matter what purchase is deepening your debt; just that your debt is increasing.

Get an accountability partner. Your accountability partner will be there for you whenever you have the impulse to overspend. If you are married, your spouse could be your accountability partner and vice versa.

Do not shop when you have the blues. Studies have shown that we are inclined to pay more for items when we are sad. Have you ever been down in the dumps and

indulged in a yummy dessert or gone back for seconds of whatever your comfort food of choice might be?

Well, the same emotional triggers that lead you to seek comfort through food can lead you to seek comfort through spending if you head to the mall instead of to your favorite restaurant.

However, we all know that the happiness we achieve through spending is fleeting. Soon we are right back to being down in the dumps.

Invest in relationships, not in 'stuff.' It is perfectly natural to want to give back to those who give to you.

It feels good to treat a friend to lunch or to see your son’s face light up when you agree to buy him the video game he wants. This satisfies the nurturing instinct in women, in particular. In addition, it helps us assuage the guilt we often feel for the shortage of time we have to spend with our loved ones. What we need to realize is that what other people really want, children and adults alike, is to spend time with us.

Use cash! The average American spends 12 to 18 percent more when they use credit cards versus cash. Buying on credit is a trap to be avoided if possible—and the best strategy for defeating temptation is to use cash whenever possible.

If you use your credit card, you will probably end up paying two or three times over in interest payments.

Bring only cash with you when you are shopping, or at the very least, use your debit card. Reaching for your credit card to pay for something you would not otherwise be able to afford is no longer an option.

Remember, small amounts add up to huge consequences. Sometimes you can overspend by missing opportunities to spend less. Do you and your family order sodas when you eat out? Do you buy coffee on the way to work each morning? If so, spend a moment filling out one of the cost calculators available online. The results will be eye opening!

There is never a bad time to start living more financially responsibly. Sure, you will have to make sacrifices, but those sacrifices will be made up multiple times over through the wonderful things you can achieve through saving and strengthening your financial outlook. azhealthandliving.com

Most people will have high blood pressure at some point in their lives. In fact, it’s estimated that by age 55, those who don’t already have high blood pressure face a 90 percent chance of developing the condition.

At home readings When you have your blood pressure taken at the doctor’s office for the first time, it’s recommended that it be taken in both arms. However, if you’re measuring your blood pressure at home,

readings are often more easily taken in the nondominant arm.

Keep in mind, there are many things that can temporarily affect the outcome of your blood pressure.

Here are a few reasons why blood pressure normally rises.

To get the best results, always take the reading after sitting for five to ten minutes. If your home blood pressure readings are different from those taken in the doctor’s office, be sure to discuss this with your healthcare professional. The guidelines for ideal blood pressure are:

120/80 or less: Normal blood pressure reading. No problems identified.

120-139/80-89: Pre-hypertension. This measure is a warning sign of potential problems, and a doctor may recommend you begin lifestyle changes to reduce your pressure.

140/90 and above: Hypertension, or high blood pressure. These numbers indicate you should find a way to reduce your blood pressure. This can be safely done with a healthy diet, exercise, and natural supplements.

Pharmaceuticals are commonly prescribed, but not addressing the cause.

180/100 or above: Readings this high can be dangerous and should be addressed immediately by a physician.

Health screenings are an important part of healthy aging. If you choose to measure your blood pressure at home, technique matters. Do not place the cuff over clothing. Keep your arm relaxed and at heart level.
