Extra Innings-East Valley A premier baseball/softball facility and much more An abandoned super market was turned into a playhouse for baseball and softball lovers. Bats and balls have replaced broccoli and cauliflower. With 11 training tunnels, four machine pitch batting cages and one fully stocked pro shop, size is one of the reasons Extra Innings-East Valley has become so popular.

“I’ve never seen anything like this in my entire life,” says Extra Inning-East Valley instructor Tim Unroe. “I was a Milwaukee Brewer and we played in Milwaukee County Stadium. This is nicer than Milwaukee County Stadium’s training facility.”

Unroe knows this first hand as one of Extra Innings-East Valley’s lead instructors. Five days a week his schedule is booked teaching aspiring ball players. On a typical weeknight Extra Innings-East Valley is jam packed with teams and individuals working to perfect their swings or pitching mechanics.

The facility has actually been used for more than just baseball or softball training. A high school football team has taken it over, using more than 6000 square feet of turf field for practice. During the week, homeschool children race around the turf playing tag, flag football and wiffle ball for physical education class. With meeting rooms, parents can even reserve Extra Innings-East Valley for birthday parties.

A sport that gained huge popularity on the beaches in Southern California has also made its way to Extra InningsEast Valley. Over-The-Line (OTL) was started in San Diego by the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club nearly 65 years ago and is played on Monday nights in the fall at the baseball and softball facility.

Similar to the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the big OTL tournament on Mission Beach is known as much for its party atmosphere as is the sport itself. The bikinis and

beer aren’t part of the atmosphere at Extra Innings, but that doesn’t stop the Valley’s OTL enthusiasts. Players come from across the Valley to play on Monday nights at the training facility.

OTL is a bat and ball game that can’t be easily described.

“It’s three man softball with no running,” says long time Over-The-Line player Dale Jarrett.

Jarrett’s explanation might be a little simplified. There are some other major differences between softball and OTL. It is played on a field just 55 feet wide but extends as far as you can hit the ball. Another big difference is in pitching.

In OTL, a fellow teammate pitches the ball straight up in the air while sitting almost directly under the batter.

Gloves are not used in OTL. This leads to a few bumps and bruises. “I’ve jammed fingers,” says Jarrett. “This past July, I jammed my index finder trying to bare hand a ball and it swelled up so bad it looked like my big toe.”

A few minor scrapes haven’t deterred people from the Monday night OTL games. The popularity continues to grow and the players come back week after week.

Fostering a Community

Arizona’s Children Association offers services for foster children and their families Nicole M. always knew she wanted to adopt a child from foster care. She can remember writing about it in a journal when she was 12 years old. What she didn’t know is when it would happen. Within the last year and a half, her family of five humans and two dogs became a family of two dogs and 11 humans with kids ranging from three months to 12 years old.

This seems like an intimidating undertaking in such a short time, but Nicole says the process wasn’t as daunting as she thought it would be and the struggles have helped her grow from her own abusive childhood. “You can’t see the pain these children have gone through and not be changed by it,” she says.

More than 18,000 children are in Arizona’s foster care system, with about 750 of them expected to “age out” of the system upon turning 18 years old this year. A majority of these children live in group homes and, on average, will move five times during their time in the system.

Arizona’s Children Association (AzCA), the state’s oldest and largest statewide child welfare and behavioral health nonprofits, provides for more than 40,000 children, youth and families every year. In 2015, more than 1,200 children in Arizona’s foster care system were provided a home.

About 800 of those homes had parents who were trained and supported directly by AzCA. The nonprofit offers services that include foster care and adoption; behavioral health and trauma/crisis response; family preservation and reunification; kinship support services; parenting education; and transitional and support services.

It is the only organization in the state certified to help young adults who have aged out of the system. Its Thrive Mentor Program in particular is designed to aid foster youth between the ages of 16 and 21 who have or will be transitioning out of state or tribal foster care. More than 1,400 youth and young adults transition into independence every year with the Thrive program.

Megan R., a freshman at Arizona State University, has been studying social work since aging out of the system.

In late September, she graduated from AzCA’s Living Skills Training Program and also received her cosmetology license. She largely credits the help of her mentor, Christie Price-Sefranka, for her success.

“She took me to orientation, went to my graduations, and helped me move in. She has been a huge support and helped me achieved my goals. I think the mentor program is important because of the extra support system,” Megan says. “Many of us [foster youth] don’t keep in touch with our foster families after we age out, and it’s important to keep connections and have someone to talk to.”

“Often, when children come into foster care, they carry with them a sense of guilt or responsibility for what has happened,” Ensdorff says. “We love stories when these children and young adults are able to speak about their situation in a way that displays their true understanding that, even though some really bad things have happened to them, it does not define them. Watching them make this discovery is impactful and it is this discovery that empowers them to use their voice in order to create positive change and take control in their lives.”

Studies on mentorship of youth have found that, over a span of two years, mentees self-reported better health, educational attainment, less suicide risk and less risk of sexually transmitted infections than non-mentored foster care youth.

Military Officer Proves That Giving Back is Always in Style West Valley resident Joseph Stenger isn't just giving back through military service, he and his team of officers are soaring to new heights in empowering others from around the globe through fashion.

But it's not just any fashion that these men are selling. It's scarves—each one handcrafted by artisans around the globe and each one with a unique story.

"Our mission is to create clothing that men and women love and feel good about wearing," says Stenger, founder of Flying Scarfs. "Through our nonprofit brand, we're able to empower hundreds of female artisans in underdeveloped countries by showcasing their handcrafted scarves to the world."

Stenger and his fellow officers thought of the idea five years ago during their deployment to Afghanistan. They saw they could create a nonprofit enterprise that would not only provide employment for Afghan women but also share their culture and story around the world. So, they started Flying Scarfs in 2011 as way to help.

And, it's worked. Today, the brand has grown to so much more, expanding to help empower artisans not just in Afghanistan but also all over the world through fashion.

"We recently re-launched our brand in an effort to reshape the manner in which Americans think about social change with a campaign called ‘Every Scarf Tells a Story,’” he says.

"With this new outlook, we are confident we'll be able to mobilize more supporters from around the globe to help harness more resources to really help us make an impact."

Currently, Stenger and his team are focused on continuing to promote microeconomic development for women globally as well as the development of education programs for women and children in underprivileged communities.

"Only 28 percent of Afghans can read and write," says Stenger. "So, we are constructing a school in the Afghan community, intended to help keep youth off the streets, where they are more likely to be indoctrinated by extremist views, and arm women and their families with the tools needed to improve quality of life and overcome extremism."

According to Stenger, the new space will be paid for through sales of the scarves and used for IT, English and reading classes for women and their families for many years to come.

"There is more to the construction of these scarves—there's a story," he says. "When a customer purchases our scarves they can feel good about joining a highly committed team of United States veterans who are dedicated to changing the lives for women in Afghanistan and around the globe by helping them stand for the freedoms everyone deserves."

Why Dental Hygiene is Essential for Overall Health The importance of maintaining clean teeth and healthy gums goes beyond having fresh breath and a white smile.

Many people are surprised to discover that oral hygiene plays an integral role in overall health.

Research indicates that oral health mirrors the condition of the body as a whole. Also, regular dental visits can alert dentists about overall health and pinpoint if a person is at a risk for chronic disease. An oral health check-up also may be the first indication of a potential health issue not yet evident to a general medical doctor.

Heart disease According to the Academy of General Dentistry, there is a distinct relationship between periodontal disease and conditions such as heart disease and stroke. Joint teams at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom and the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland found that people with bleeding gums from poor dental hygiene could have an increased risk of heart disease. Bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream when bleeding gums are present. That bacteria can stick to platelets and subsequently form blood clots. This interrupts the flow of blood to the heart and may trigger a heart attack. Brushing and flossing twice daily and rinsing with mouthwash can remove bacteria and keep gums healthy.

Facial pain The Office of the Surgeon General says infections of the gums that support the teeth can lead to facial and oral pain.

Gingivitis, which is an early stage of gum disease, as well as advanced gum disease, affects more than 75 percent of the American population.

Dental decay can lead to its own share of pain. Maintaining a healthy mouth can fend off decay and infections, thereby preventing pain.

Pancreatic cancer In 2007, the Harvard School of Public Health reported a link between gum disease and pancreatic cancer. In the ongoing study, 51,000 men were followed and data was collected beginning in 1986. The Harvard researchers found that men with a history of gum disease had a 64 percent increased risk of pancreatic cancer compared with men who had never had gum disease. for pancreatic cancer among this group was in men with recent tooth loss. However, the study was unable to find links between other types of oral health problems, such as tooth decay, and pancreatic cancer.

Alzheimer's disease Various health ailments, including poor oral health, have been linked to a greater risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. In 2010, after reviewing 20 years' worth of data, researchers from New York University concluded that there is a link between gum inflammation and Alzheimer's disease. Follow-up studies from researchers at the University of Central Lancashire in the United Kingdom compared brain samples from 10 living patients with Alzheimer's to samples from 10 people who did not have the disease. Understanding Seasonal Affective Disorder The tail end of daylight saving time in 2016 occurs November 6, when millions of people will turn their clocks back one hour. Few people enjoy turning the clocks back in autumn as much as they enjoy turning them forward in spring. Turning the clocks forward affords many people, in particular working professionals who spend much of their weekdays working indoors, a chance to enjoy some sunlight when leaving their offices each day.

However, once the clocks are turned back, professionals typically find themselves leaving their offices under a cover of darkness.

Some people easily adjust to less daylight, while others experience a condition known as season affective disorder, or SAD. SAD is a disorder related to changes in seasons.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the majority of people with SAD begin to experience symptoms in the fall and continue battling those symptoms throughout the winter.

The end of daylight saving time occurs in early November, and the onset of SAD symptoms is no doubt related to the decreased exposure to daylight many people experience once clocks have been turned back. Those who suspect they might be susceptible to SAD can get a better grasp of the condition so they are capable of recognizing and responding to it should any symptoms appear.

What is SAD? Mental Health America, a leading community-based nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness, defines SAD as a mood disorder associated with depression and related to seasonal variations of light. Symptoms of SAD may worsen among people who have already been diagnosed with clinical depression or bipolar disorder.

Don’t think that you need to fill the person’s every moment with holiday festivities. Grieving can be both physically and emotionally exhausting. They simply may not have the energy to handle all that celebrating.

During the holiday season, you can best provide support to the bereaved if you:

Don’t force your agenda on them Allow the bereaved to set the tone for how they wish to cope with the holidays. Honor their choices. Whether they wish to maintain their normal holiday routine, leave town or ignore the holidays entirely, resist the urge to pressure them to handle the holidays your way.

Don’t avoid them Your absence will be noticed more than you think. If the griever asks to be left alone, honor their wishes if it’s safe to do so. Otherwise, include them in the festivities and treat them as you would any other significantly injured guest: with kindness, compassion and gentleness.

Don’t pretend nothing has happened in their life

If you live or work with the bereaved, their sorrow can quickly deplete your own happiness. Give yourself permission to take time to enjoy the festivities. If you live with the griever, then carve out ways that allow you to celebrate in private. Even small ways can help, such as indulging in a favorite holiday treat or enjoying a night out with friends.

That only creates the elephant in the room, and invalidates their sorrow. But don’t awkwardly coddle them either. Again, simply treat them with kindness, compassion, and gentleness while reminding yourself that you can’t fix their pain.

How to Teach Kids to be Philanthropic Introducing children to charity early in their lives can lay a foundation of philanthropy that lasts a lifetime.

The more kids witness charitable giving, the more likely they are to embrace charity as they grow up.

Teaching children that it is better to give than to receive can be challenging, but it's never too early to instill philanthropic feelings in a child. In order to help young children understand what it means to be charitable, try these ideas.

Open a dialogue A study from the United Nations Foundation and the Women's Philanthropy Institute at Indiana UniversityPurdue University Indianapolis found simply talking to children about giving increased the likelihood that children would give by 20 percent. Being specific makes a difference in getting the message out there. For example, rather than mentioning we have to give because it makes the world a better place, explain how donating food will help feed the less fortunate who cannot afford to feed themselves.

Lead by example Call the children over when you are doing something that pertains to philanthropy. Show them checks being written to help various nonprofits, or include them in outings that involve volunteer work.

Look for easy ways to give

Help out neighbors Being charitable doesn't have to mean spending tons of money or even putting together material things. It can involve donating time to others who may need assistance.

Service-oriented projects, such as raking leaves, baking cookies or taking in elderly neighbors' garbage pails, are all types of charity. Children can become friendly and play with other children who may have a parent serving in the military or support someone who has special needs.

Get involved with pets

Charity doesn't require a large amount of money or substantial effort, and starting with something simple can make for a great introduction to charity. Begin with small projects kids can embrace and understand. Spend time going through clothes that no longer fit and make a trip to a charitable clothing drive or collection bin.

Animals and children seem a perfect match, and one charitable effort kids may embrace is helping animals.

Bring food or pet supplies to a shelter or the local humane society. Allow children to interact with the animals they are helping.

Bring your child to a clothing store or toy store and pick out an item that can be donated to a less fortunate child. This way he or she can participate firsthand.

There are many ways to acclimate children to charitable living, and doing so may lay the foundation for a rewarding life.

How to Help Kids in Your Community

Helping kids is not just for parents, as young adults and older adults with no children of their own or those whose children are fully-grown can give back to kids in their communities in various ways.

Coaching: Youth sports leagues rely on volunteers to run smoothly. Inquire with your local government office about how to become a youth sports coach in your community. In many instances, no coaching experience is necessary to coach youth sports. However, prospective coaches will likely have to undergo training before they can patrol the sidelines. Such training may include everything from coaching pointers to emergency medical training and more.

Teaching: Adults with knowledge to pass along to the next generation may want to explore volunteer teaching opportunities.

Successful professionals can share their professional expertise with high school or college students through communitysponsored programs. Amateur or professional musicians can offer lessons to youngsters interested in learning an instrument, while writers can teach kids about writing. Volunteer teaching opportunities may be easiest to find by speaking to local boys and girls clubs or schools that offer weekend or after school programs.

Fitness: Kids who are not involved in organized athletics may still enjoy exercise, which provides even more opportunities for adults to give back to the youth in their communities. For example, cycling enthusiasts can work with local youth organizations to sponsor cycling groups for kids. If hiking or kayaking is your passion, look into organizing trips to nearby state parks where kids can hike and/or kayak and learn to love the great outdoors.

Mentoring: Many young people benefit from the guidance of mentors. Mentoring can be done through an organization such as Big Brothers Big Sisters (www.bbbs.org) or through local school systems that connect professionals from certain fields with students interested in pursuing careers in those fields. Seven Tips to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain The holiday season is a busy time of year dominated by social engagements. Many people find the hectic pace of the holiday season makes it challenging to eat healthy, especially since so many holiday parties include desserts and high-calorie foods.

Various studies suggest holiday weight gain is common, though holiday revelers may not be gaining as much weight as they think they are. The New England Journal of Medicine found that while people's perceived holiday weight gain hovers between zero and 6.7 pounds, in reality most people gain just under 1 pound during the holiday season. Though that may not seem like a lot, according to researchers at the National Institutes of Health, many people never lose the weight they gain during the winter holidays. The pounds add up year after year, making holiday weight gain a significant contributor to adult obesity.

The holiday season does not need to derail a healthy lifestyle.

Consider these tips to avoid extra pounds come the holiday season.

Eat before you go shopping. Leaving the house hungry may tempt you to make impulse food purchases that can compromise healthy diets. It's easy to grab a quick convenience item at the food court or from a vending machine. However, eating a snack before you leave will alleviate hunger and you can control the foods that go into your body.

Make smarter food choices. When visiting a holiday party buffet line or grabbing an on-the-go snack, think about the foods you choose. Look for low-calorie items that will still fill you up. Proteins, complex carbohydrates and vegetables are good choices. Avoid creamy dips and dressings, and if you want to try something fried or cheese-laden, do so only sparingly.

Be selective with sweets. Sweets are readily available during the holiday season. Rather than filling up your plate with a little "bite" of each dessert you want to try, select your favorite and then enjoy a reasonable portion.

Limit sampling while cooking. If you are entertaining others, cut down on tasting while you prepare the meal.

Those calories can add up without you knowing it, and soon you've eaten an entire portion even before the festivities begin.

Pack healthy snacks. It's always a good idea to have healthy snacks at the ready to tame random hunger pangs.

Bring a favorite treat with you while shopping or if you will be visiting others. This helps you control your portion size and can keep you from overeating.

Mind your drinks, too. Many beverages, including alcoholic beverages and sweetened soft drinks, are high in calories. A single serving of wine can have anywhere from 100 to 300 calories. It's easy to lose count of caloric intake when indulging, but opt for low-calorie drinks or water whenever possible.

Increase your level of physical activity. Find ways to remain physically active during the holiday season. Park further away from mall entrances so you can walk a greater distance and burn more calories. Take a few extra laps around the mall. Opt for the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. If you're at a party with upbeat music, get on the dance floor and work off some calories.

Holiday weight gain may seem like an inevitability. However, with some forward thinking and smart choices, holiday celebrants can prevent weight gain this holiday season.

Probiotics Can Be Part of a Nutritious Diet

Probiotics can help people combat gastrointestinal distress.

Some probiotics can help prevent diarrhea that occurs as a side effect from antibiotics, and they may also be beneficial to those who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome and conditions that affect the gastrointestinal tract.

Probiotics are living microorganisms found in certain foods, most notably yogurt and kefir. They also may be found in products that are not taken orally, such as skin creams.

Probiotics may be concentrated in dietary supplements as well. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, probiotics are healthy bacteria that help bodies to function properly by aiding in the digestion of food. Probiotics also destroy disease-causing microorganisms.

Researchers have studied probiotics to determine their potential role in people's personal health. Preliminary data suggests that probiotics can be useful in helping with stomach upset from infections and taking antibiotics.

Probiotics are also being examined to determine if they can be used to combat allergic disorders, such as hay fever or eczema. Probiotics also may be useful in the fight against oral health problems that stem from bacteria, like periodontal disease. Researchers also are looking into whether probiotics can be useful in treating the common cold or reducing the severity of the flu.

The Mayo Clinic says side effects to probiotics are rare, and many healthy adults can safely add probiotic-heavy foods or probiotic supplements to their diets. But before including probiotics in your diet, speak with your doctor to make sure there will be no drug interactions or other adverse side effects.

Terrariums. These mini greenhouses continue to grow in popularity and are perfect for new or timid gardeners. Just plant a few small tropical plants, moisten the soil, close the lid and you have a self-contained growing chamber. Show off your green thumb with a modern, classic or vintage style vessel.

Take a moment to consider some of today’s largest, most recognizable companies—some of them may not be around after the next several years.

Napster was a rule-breaking company that paved the way for iTunes and the complete disruption of the music industry. When someone who has no business being in your business comes along and puts you out of business, we call that a ‘Napster Moment.’ And Napster Moments are happening more and more often.

In a recent radio interview, hit maker and former Sony CEO Tommy Mottola (think: Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Beyoncé) said that seasoned record execs saw Napster as a “mosquito unworthy of swatting,” and in hindsight realized that if they had just purchased the company, they would have “beaten iTunes to the punch.”

The lesson? To succeed, company leaders must not only be able to innovate, they must recognize opportunity and ensure they’re poised to seize it.

The award-winning actress continues to impress audiences across the globe Dubbed the “The Most Bankable French Actress of the 21st Century,” Marion Cotillard has been entertaining fans in her native France and around the world for decades. Most recently, she starred in period spy thriller “Allied,” which opens in theaters this month.

“Allied” follows Max Vatan [Brad Pitt] and Marianne Beausejour [Cotillard], two assassins who fall in love during a mission in Casablanca in 1942 to kill a German ambassador. A future together, however, is thrown into tumult when twisty secrets from their pasts cast doubts on their love for each other,” according to movies website ComingSoon.net.

This film though is hardly Cotillard’s first appearance on the big screen. In fact, the 41-year-old actress made her acting debut in France at the age of 18. Since then, she has garnered success in both the French and American entertainment industries. On the American front, recent projects include “Contagion,” “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Macbeth.”

“All of the characters I’ve had the chance to create are survivors,” she told The Telegraph in 2014. “But we live in a world where surviving makes up most of what we do.”

Her hard work both in her native France and here in the States has paid off. She has received an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, two Cesar Awards, a European Film Award, a BAFTA Award, New York Film Critics Circle Award, and a National Society of Film Critics Award among many other top honors and nominations.

In fact, according to multiple media outlets, she was made a Chevalier (Knight) of the Order of the Arts and Letters in 2010 and, this year, was named being a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French government. This recognition is the country’s highest honor.

When it comes to her roles, Cotillard has been known to go inside of her characters and reflect them on screen in a way few actresses can, according to many critics.

When asked by Interview Magazine in 2010 where she first became passionate about the environment, Cotillard told the publication: “I think it comes from my family —especially my grandmother. I remember when I was a little girl at her house in Brittany. When she cooked, she wouldn’t waste anything. And my parents always raised me to believe that the most important thing was respect. How to Help Socially Isolated Seniors The elderly population is on the rise in many countries.

Advancements in health care and a growing emphasis on healthy lifestyles mean people are living longer than ever before.

Age is often accompanied by wisdom, but men and women may also find that feelings of isolation, loneliness, and depression may also settle in, as they grow older.

The Journal of Primary Prevention published "A Review of Social Isolation," which observed how social isolation has been linked to numerous detrimental health effects in older adults. Some of these ailments may include increased risk for mortality, rehospitalization, falls and dementia.

Individuals looking to give back to their communities may want to consider helping seniors in their area.

Although it can be difficult to see seniors with diminished physical or mental capabilities, the rewards of interacting and helping seniors can be immeasurable. There are plenty of ways to help seniors avoid isolation and continue to live fulfilling lives.

Provide transportation A Place for Mom, a senior housing placement resource, notes that lack of adequate transportation is a main cause of social isolation among seniors. Voluntary or necessary cessation of driving makes getting to and from appointments or even recreational outings more difficult. Where public transportation is unavailable or challenging to come by, volunteers can help shuttle seniors to and from grocery stores, doctor's offices and any other places they need to go. Getting out regularly and seeing new faces can help seniors overcome feelings of loneliness.

Participate in hobbies together Give seniors a sense of purpose by encouraging them to participate in hobbies or activities. Book clubs are one activity that can interest people of different age groups.

How to Know if it’s Alzheimer’s Disease In 1983, President Ronald Reagan designated November National Alzheimer’s disease Awareness Month. It is during this month that the public is encouraged to “Go Purple with a Purpose” to raise further awareness of the disease. Today, 5.4 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s and it’s estimated that 5.2 million of those people are aged 65 and older, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Alzheimer’s is an “after the fact” type of disease; caregivers and/or family members typically learn about the signs and behaviors after their loved one is diagnosed.

The signs of Alzheimer’s and dementia are gradual and appear infrequent in its early stages. Family members and caregivers have a tendency to look back and think, “I should have known,” but it is best to look forward and ask, “What is next?.”

There are certain red flags to be aware of. If you are a primary caregiver, you should look for the following signs, which indicate your loved one may be experiencing a decline in memory:

Mood swings

Unable to perform routine activities

Mood disorders, including depression and anxiety, are common in people with Alzheimer’s or dementia and can often result in isolation from family and friends.

Emotional distress can also surface from feelings of frustration resulting from a distorted thought process.

Is your loved one’s home and personal hygiene looking unkempt? Are expired medications left around the house? If your loved one is not taking care of these things or not following their medication schedule properly, it could be a sign that they need help with daily tasks.

Changes in eating and sleeping habits Missing appointments A lack of appetite or skipping meals due to forgetfulness may become evident, along with changes in sleep patterns. They may remain awake for longer periods at night or frequently wake-up and start to wander.

Is your loved one forgetting appointments, birthdays or family events? If this begins happening more often, you need to look at the other signs.

Difficulty dealing finances Is the mail piling up and are you finding notices that bills are unpaid? Difficultly managing time or money is common in the early stages of the disease.

Interruptions in thinking, memory and communication Repeating conversations over and over, while it is common during aging, it can also be a sign of Alzheimer’s or dementia. Delusional statements, focusing closely on insignificant details, or not distinguishing or remembering things that are apparent to others are indications that memory and communication abilities are compromised.

If you are concerned about a loved one, it is best to seek a second opinion and possibly professional help before jumping to conclusions. Confusion, forgetfulness, and repetition coupled with disorientation and the inability to retain information or learn new things are all common signs, but they can also be a result of other issues, like something as simple as a bladder infection or the need for a medication change.

If your loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia, it is time to consider the help of an eldercare specialist, both for your family member and for yourself.

Alzheimer’s patients can quickly become isolated, but so can their caregivers. While many family members do what they can, it’s important to note that caring for an Alzheimer’s sufferer is very different. Group homes or assisted living facilities are typically the best gift a family member can provide. Sharing a space with others experiencing Alzheimer’s is actually more enriching and it provides a consistent schedule for them to follow and help performing daily routine activities. It is most important to work with your family physician to get the proper diagnosis and then determine what is best for your family member.
