Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

Runswick Days won The Santander In Memory of Robert Forster Handicap Steeple Chase at Sedgefield on Tuesday 11th November 2014.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Race preview from Weatherbys

I’m delighted to be at Sedgefield today, particularly as this is a fixture I traditionally enjoy attending as we gear up for the season proper. Today carries extra significance, however, as I have the privilege of presenting the prize for the Point-to-Point Recruits-sponsored handicap hurdle, where a competitive field of nine go to post.

A few arrive in form, but perhaps none more so than Jennie Candlish’s Dickens, who has won four of his five starts since switching from Alan King. He bids for a hat-trick, having scored twice at Newton Abbot last month, the latter from a mark of 109, which he runs off again today. Luke Scott also claims a handy 3lb.

Mickey Bowen’s runners are rarely far away, and IsleofSark, sporting a first-time visor, drops back in trip after finishing 10 lengths adrift over 2m7½f at Uttoxeter last month. The reigning champion jockey, Sean Bowen, takes the ride.

Philip Kirby won the corresponding race two years ago with Zwicky. This time he’s represented by Bathgate, a course winner last November over 2m1f from a mark of 93. He followed up at Catterick in January from 100 and lines up today off 107.

FinalEdgar was well supported when finishing runner-up to SpotOnSoph over this course and distance last month.

That form has been franked by the third, The Navigator, who scored at Kelso on Sunday, and also the sixth, You Did, who won at Hexham last week. Final Edgar is 3lb better off with Sam England’s charge this time, perhaps enough to reverse the placings. Both are clearly in good heart.

The veteran of the field is 10-year-old CouldBeTrouble, who should appreciate the return to the north after contesting competitive races in the Midlands over the summer. She won at Hexham from a mark of 105 around this time last year and is only 3lb higher here.

Mickey Hammond’s Magnolia makes her seasonal reappearance, having run a fine race when last seen at Perth in April. This sort of trip appeared to suit that day, and a mark of 102 looks workable.

Also making her seasonal debut is Speiriuil, who has joined Adam Nicol from Nigel Hawke. She’s one from 12 but consistent, having placed on five other occasions.

Completing the line-up is OutLauraB, who was pulled up when last seen at Cartmel in August. She stays further than this and, having won from a mark of 101, looks nicely poised again off her current rating of 98.

WEIGHTWATCHER: BELLE NA BANN won off a handicap mark of 80, her rating is now down 6lb to 74. LONGEST TRAVELLER: ZAMOND trained by D McCain, Cholmondeley, 142 miles.

CAPTAIN COOL showed improved form making a quick switch to handicaps when finding only one too good over C&D last week and surely has even more to offer after just 3 career starts, so he’s an appealing candidate for an in-form yard. Zamond warrants plenty of respect under a 7lb penalty, with Clan Chieftain pick of the remainder
