Good afternoon and welcome to Doncaster Racecourse for the highlight of the four-day Betfred St Leger Festival - Betfred St Leger Day! We are delighted you’ve joined us here today and we would like to thank our festival sponsor Betfred and our race sponsors PJ Towey Construction, EBF and Cepac for their generous support of today’s fixture.
There are 7 races on the card and our raceday presenter Bobby Beevers, resident tipster Roger Hart and Matt Hulmes from Betfred will be in the Parade Ring at around 1:15 to run through the racecard with you and hopefully pick you out some winners!
The Betfred St Leger Stakes promises a thrilling display of talent, with Aidan O’Brien aiming for his eighth victory in the World’s oldest Classic, having previously triumphed with Milan, Brian Boru, Scorpion, Leading Light, Capri, Kew Gardens, and most recently, Continuous in 2023. O’Brien has entered three of the seven contenders, including the current Ballydoyle team favourite, Illinois, partnered with Wayne Lordan. Having won the Queen’s Vase at Ascot in June, the colt has already established himself as one to watch.
We have a pianist in main reception playing intermittently throughout the day and a roving brass band. Stick around after racing as The Ultimate Party Band will have you up dancing for 90 minutes after the last race on the Champagne Lawn Our Grandstand and Family guests are welcome to upgrade and enjoy the party. Our friends from British Champions Series are in the Exhibition Hall today with their Virtual Reality Racing Experience Enjoy an immersive ride with the virtual headsets to ride aboard a champion today. Grace and Dotty are also here today on the Champagne Lawn selling an exquisite range of clothing and accessories so stop by and check out their stand.

Finally, everyone at Doncaster Racecourse was deeply saddened to hear the news about the passing of racing journalist Howard Wright. Howard was a regular at Doncaster and attended every single St Leger Festival since 1948. Yesterday the feature race – The Betfred Doncaster Cup was named in his honour Today our Press Room is officially named after its most distinguished occupant, and a memorial bench will be situated on the concourse Howard will be greatly missed by all.
As always, our team here at Doncaster are committed to doing our very best to ensure you enjoy The Betfred St Leger Festival 2024 and we value any feedback you may have

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO RACING
Allowance The weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience
Amateur (Rider) on racecards, their names are usually prefixed by Mr, Mrs, etc. to indicate their amateur license-holder status.
Apprentice A trainee Flat jockey connected to the stable of a licensed trainer. Apprentices have a weight allowance when they ride in races against professional jockeys and can compete for the annual Apprentice title, given to the winner of the most races during the season.
Bar Term used when describing bookmakers’ prices. e.g. ‘4-1 bar two’ means that you can obtain at least 4-1 about any horse except for the first two in betting.
Bit Metal part of the bridle that sits in a horse’s mouth. The reins are then attached to the bit and used by the jockey to control the horse
Blinkers A form of headgear worn by the horse, consisting of a hood with cups around the eyes They are used to limit a horse’s vision and reduce distractions, with the aim of making it concentrate.
Cheekpieces Strips of sheepskin that are attached to the side of a horse’s bridle They partially obscure a horse’s rear vision, with the aim of getting the horse to concentrate on racing.
Clerk of the Course Racecourse official responsible for the overall racecourse management, including the preparation of the racing surface.
Clerk of the Scales Racecourse official whose chief duty is to weigh the riders before and after a race to ensure proper weight is carried.
Colours Jacket (‘silks’) worn by jockey to identify a horse A horse runs in its owner’s colours which are registered with Weatherbys The colours to be worn by each jockey are shown on racecards.
Colt Male, ungelded horse, up to four years old .
Conditions race A race in which horses are allotted extra weight according to factors including sex, age, whether they are a previous winner etc. This is a better-class race for horses just below Group or Listed level.
Connections The owner and trainer of a racehorse
Distance The length of a race
Dam Mother of a horse
Draw A horse’s starting position in the stalls allotted in races on the Flat. Stall numbers are drawn at random by Weatherbys (except in a handful of top races that allow each horse’s connections, having been randomly selected, to choose the stall number for their horse). A horse with a seemingly advantageous draw is said to be “well drawn”. Stalls are used for Flat racing only.
Filly Female horse four-years-old or younger.
Foal Horse of either sex from its birth until 1 January the following year Furlong 220 yards (one eighth of a mile). The numbered posts on British racecourses count the furlongs back from the winning post.
Gelding Castrated horse
Going Description of the course conditions under foot.
Hand Unit of four inches in which a horse’s height is measured at the shoulder
Judge Official responsible for declaring the finishing order and distances between horses.
Juvenile Two-year old horse
Maiden Horse which has not yet won a race.
Handicap A race where each horse is allotted a different weight to carry, according to the official handicap ratings determined by the BHA Handicappers. The theory is that all horses run on a fair and equal basis - the ‘perfect’ handicap being one where all the runners finish in a dead-heat.
Mare Female horse aged five years old or above
Middle Distances On the Flat, races beyond a mile and up to 1m6f are the middle distances. A middle-distance horse is one that runs mainly over such distances or is regarded as being suitable for those distances.
Penalty Weight added to the handicap weight of a horse which has won since the weights were published.
Photo Finish Electronic photo device which determines minimal distance in a close finish.
Racecard The runners and riders of the day within this raceday programme.
Rating A measure of the ability of a horse on a scale starting at zero and going into three figures. Flat and Jump racing use different scales; the highestrated Flat horse is usually in the 130s and the top-rated jumper in the 180s.
Schooled Trained to jump
Sire Father of a horse
Sprint races Flat races run over a distance of five or six furlongs.
Stewards Enquiry Enquiry by a panel of men and women responsible for seeing rules are adhered to into a race’s running.
Tongue Tie Strip of material tied around a horse’s tongue and lower jaw to keep it from swallowing its tongue, which can clog its air passage. A horse wearing a tongue tie is denoted on a racecard by a small t next to the horse’s weight (t1 indicates that the horse is wearing a tongue tie in a race for the first time).
Under Starter’s Orders Occurs when the race is about to start
Visor Similar to blinkers, but with a slit in each eye cup to allow some lateral vision. A horse wearing a visor is denoted on a racecard by a small v next to the horse’s weight (v1 indicates that the horse is wearing a visor in a race for the first time).
Weighing In/Out
Each jockey (wearing his racing kit and carrying his saddle) must stand on official weighing scales before and after the race, so that the Clerk of the Scales can check that the jockey is carrying the correct weight allotted to his horse. If a jockey is above the allotted weight before the race, his horse can still compete but must carry overweight. When the weights carried by the winner and placed horses have been verified after the race, there will be an announcement that they have ‘weighed in’. This confirms the race result and at this point bookmakers will pay out on successful bets.
Yearling Horse of either sex from 1 January to 31 December of the year following its birth.

Official BHA ratings explained
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
Bay (B) – from light brown through to dark brown with black mane/tail
Chestnut (CH) – reddish with a mane/tail to match Roan (Ro) – white hairs mixed with another colour
Brown (Br) – darker than a bay with a black mane/tail
Black (Bl) – Black and rare
White (Wh) – Rare with pink skin.
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating

The Champagne Stakes is a Group 2 race for two-year-old colts and geldings run over 7-furlongs. The Champagne Stakes was first established in 1823 and has gone through a myriad of changes. It was first run over 1-mile before it was shortened to 6-furlongs in 1870. In 1962 it was extended to 7-furlongs and restricted to male horses in 1988.
It tends to be used as a steppingstone to the Dewhurst Stakes (G1), with recent winners Too Darn Hot and Chaldean both fine examples of this after they both went on to win Newmarket’s premier 2-year-old Group 1 race after victory on Town Moor Chaldean also made history in becoming the first horse since Rodrigo De Triano to win the Champagne Stakes as a two-year-old before the 2000 Guineas as a three-year-old.

A TRIBUTE TO HOWARD WRIGHT
WORDS BY RACING POST COLLEAGUE DAVID CARR
There are half a million reasons to remember the St Leger in 1948. That was the size of the crowd that squeezed in to see the richest race ever run in Britain.
King George VI and Queen Elizabeth were there, the first time royalty had been at Doncaster for the final Classic for 40 years.
But there was also a future member of racing royalty among the hordes cheering home Black Tarquin, a very young Howard Wright who was born in the city just three years earlier
When His and Her Majesties came to Town Moor for the Leger again last year, it was a new king and queen who took the acclaim of a - slightly smaller - crowd.
But it was the same Howard who was here, less wide-eyed than on that first visit but deepdown probably just as excited and delighted to maintain a remarkable record
For, unlike the royals, he had not missed a single Leger since, an ever-present at 76 successive runnings.
He even managed to get himself smuggled into the course to see the behind-closed-doors year of 2020 - a good journalist can get in anywhere.
And Howard was a good journalist. Quite possibly the best. The only thing that rivalled his knowledge of the racing industry was his ability to reach the supposedly unreachable within it, to tell a story that nobody else had even sniffed.
Those skills might have been put to very different use had he not been rescued from a civil service job in London in 1964, joining fellow Yorkshire iconoclast Phil Bull at Timeform in Halifax.
He moved on to the Sheffield Morning Telegraph and then the Daily Telegraph back in London, before being headhunted by the team planning the launch of the Racing Post.
That was definitely a winning selection as Howard, initially news editor and then long-time industry editor, proceeded to inform, educate and entertain the readership with stories, features and columns that got under the skin of the sport. Like the Spanish Inquisition with a Doncaster accent.
There was a ladleful of charm to go with the flattened vowels and he had a beguiling way of earning the confidence of the great and the good - not always the same people in racingand using their unattributed words to get the truth on to the printed page.
Nor was his renown restricted to these shores. He was the trusted face of British racing journalism in America, Australia, Dubai and Hong Kong. Even the communists in China knew that they could not open a new racecourse in 2019 without having Mr W in attendance In recent years I have commemorated Howard’s presence at Doncaster on St Leger with a photoimmaculately turned out, as ever - put on social media and I was always bowled over by the worldwide outpouring of loving comments it received.
Howard officially “retired” from the Racing Post in 2012 but retirement was one of the few words this master writer did not know and he still always seemed to be present when it mattered.
That included at the National Horseracing College just outside Doncaster, an organisation he never missed an opportunity to champion and one where he had been a trustee since 1990 and vicechairman since 2004.
His words still appeared in the Post as recently as April but sadly there will be no St Leger day tweet this year as Howard died in August, at the age of 79.
No journalist ever had an easier job than the man asked to gather tributes, as the biggest names in racing praised “the best of the best,” who “knew the industry better than anyone” and whose “professionalism, integrity and innate sense of fair play shone through.”
Which explains why this meeting features the Betfred Howard Wright Doncaster Cup and we welcome his widow Anne, as the press room is officially named after its most distinguished occupant.
Black Tarquin really started something.
MEET THE FACES
DAVID ATTWOOD CLERK OF THE COURSE
WHAT IS YOUR JOB TITLE AND ROLE WITHIN THE COMPANY?
I am the Clerk of the Course at Doncaster Racecourse with overall responsibility for racing at Doncaster. This includes track management, race programming, all the racing services, and then the running of the day itself Pretty much everything to ensure racing goes ahead safely.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT DONCASTER RACECOURSE?
Four and a half months.
WHAT WAS YOUR JOB BEFORE YOU CAME TO DONCASTER RACECOURSE?
Before I came to work at Doncaster, I was Clerk of the Course at Southwell Racecourse And before this I was Head of Racing and Operations at Leopardstown.
HOW MANY ST LEGERS HAVE YOU WORKED?
Just the one! I was Assistant Clerk at Doncaster last year
WHICH DAY OF THE ST LEGER FESTIVAL IS YOUR FAVOURITE AND WHY?
Saturday! Not just because of the St Leger but also for the Champagne Stakes which is one of the top 2-year-old races in the country. It’s also where we get the biggest crowd which means there will be the best atmosphere, and more people get to see the hard work we have put into the track.
WHAT DOES YOUR ST LEGER WORK WEEK LOOK LIKE?
It’s not just the week but the months leading up to it which are busy. We have been planning the track and racing line since the start of the flat season to ensure we have the best track possible.
Seven days out from the opening day of the festival on Thursday, we walk the track every morning and then two days out right through to the end we walk the track at 6am and then again
2hrs the rac s bef e turn f
2hrs before the first race
Once the last race is finished everyone goes into the stable yard to turn the stables around whilst others are either watering, cutting the track or moving rail. There is a daily debrief at 7.30pm before probably finishing around 9pm or 10pm each night.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE ST LEGER MEMORY OR STORY?
Back in 2010 I was on the BHA graduate program as a journalist for the Press Association and they sent me to cover the St Leger Festival. I remember the first day a certain horse called FRANKEL won and I had to get some quotes and write up the report – amazing!
WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT WORKING AT DONCASTER RACECOURSE?
The grounds staff and the track. My team are a great bunch to work with. Never a dull moment and they keep each other going on the tough days. I love the track. It’s an amazing piece of turf especially first thing in the morning when no one is around. You can look down the home straight from the top of the mile and it’s stunning.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE RACECOURSE AND WHY?
The Weighing Room on raceday. It can be a real hive of activity but also a sanctuary away from it all on busy days Some of the interactions between the jockeys can be quite interesting at times!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE COLOUR?
Blue
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FILM?
Depending on the situation…Moneyball or Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves!
FAVOURITE BAND OR SONG?
It depends on the mood! Sometimes cheesy so a bit of WHAM! Or something from the 80’s… but Bruce Springsteen Born to Run definitely gets me going!
AGE 60 OR OVER?

This is wide open but the vote goes to COVER UP who brings some rock solid handicap form to the table whilst shaping as though this idiosyncratic trip will prove ideal too. Vintage Clarets has slipped to a very attractive mark and heads the list of dangers on the back of his eye-catching York eighth, although a good case can also be made for American Affair, Bergerac, Shagraan and Apollo One in this ultra competitive Portland

ST LEGER STAKES
ILLINOIS
T: AIDAN O’BRIEN
J: WAYNE LORDAN
SUNWAY
T: DAVID MENUISIER
J: CHRISTOPHE SOUMILLON
The current favourite for Aidan O’Brien, who has his eye on his eighth St Leger victory, is the Galileo colt. Earlier this year in June, he claimed victory in the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot, followed by a runner up finish in the French Derby and a second place showing in the Great Voltigeur While his form is consistent, he has only managed one win from six starts in Listed and Group company, although that win did come over this 1m6f distance He has a strong change but will have to put up a fight
JAN BRUEGHEL
T: AIDAN O’BRIEN
J: SEAN LEVEY
Another Galileo son and full-brother to 2019 Irish Derby winner Sovereign, he debuted with a strong win at the Curragh in May and has since secured two Group 3 victories, including the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood. Although lacking experience with just three outings, he remains unbeaten and is improving rapidly. His form is promising, with the runner-up from the Gordon Stakes winning a Grade 3 in the US and his previous third-place finish at Ascot working out well Jan Brueghel shows significant potential and adds strength to the Ballydoyle team.
YOU GOT TO ME
T: RALPH BECKETT
J: HECTOR CROUCH
The Irish Oaks winner, supplemented on Monday morning, has had an excellent season and is in career-best form. She finished a strong second in the Yorkshire Oaks and is tackling the Leger trip for the first time, facing the boys for the first time as well. She is an intriguing contender, but her odds seem short given the unknown surrounding this step up in distance and competition.
GROSVENOR SQUARE
T: AIDAN O’BRIEN
J: GAVIN RYAN
Though a brother to Sealiway, Sunway’s pedigree doesn’t scream St Leger contender, but his performances tells a different story. He won a Group 1 over a mile on soft ground at two, finished a strong second in the Irish Derby, and clocked the third-fastest final furlong in the King George. However, while his Irish Derby run was impressive, the rest of his form is mixed, and he may prefer softer ground than forecast. Even though others may look more promising, that is not to say he doesn’t stand a chance.
DEIRA MILE
T: OWEN BURROWS
J: JASON WATSON
His fourth-place finish in the Derby can be seen in two ways: as a sign he’s capable of competing at the Leger level, or as an indicator of listed-level ability, given his proximity to horses like Sayedaty Sadaty and Dancing Gemini His subsequent August Stakes run didn’t provide much clarity. His close defeat in a tactical race on soft ground was reasonable, but his tendency to be overly keen raises concerns for this longer distance His fourths in both the Derby and the Futurity suggest he’s competitive but not exceptional With a solid prep at Windsor, he should be prepared, and while he needs to find improvement, he stands a chance of performing better over this new distance
WILD WAVES
T: ANDREW BALDING
J: DANIEL TUDHOPE
Whilst he seemed promising in handicaps earlier this season, his chances now seem slim Although Andrew Balding has a knack for surprising results in Classics (Berkshire Rocco nearly won the St Leger as an outsider in 2020) Wild Waves appears well below the level typically needed to win a Betfred St Leger.
The odds may imply that Aidan O’Brien’s Grosvenor is th third string of the Ballydoyle team but don’t underestima the Galileo colt On his first attempt at the distance, up against his stable mate Tower of London, he finished a strong second in the Curragh Cup in July, before delivering a dominant 20-length victory in the Irish St Leger Trial over the same course and distance If he can maintain his position at the front like before, then he will be in with a good chance.
may O’Brien’s the e im y t underestimate e in before agh
ST LEGER STAKES
The St Leger Stakes is the highlight of the year at Doncaster Racecourse. It is a Group 1 race open to three-year-old colts and fillies run over 1-mile and 6-furlongs. Established in 1766, it is the oldest and final Classic of Britain’s five Classic races.
The Classics consist of the Betfred 2000 Guineas, Betfred 1000 Guineas, Betfred Oaks, Betfred Derby and the Betfred St Leger.
In 2019, the Juddmonte-owned Logician broke the record for the fastest winning time in the St Leger Stakes as he completed the race in a time of 3:00:27s. The widest winning margin recorded in the St Leger Stakes was in 1954 when Never Say Die won by an emphatic 12-lengths.
During the 19th century, trainer John Scott (16 wins) and jockey Bill Scott (9 wins) farmed the St Leger Stakes but more recently it has been Aidan O’Brien (6 wins) and Frankie Dettori (6 wins) who have been the trainer / jockey combination to follow.
Since 2013, there have been five winning favourites in the St Leger Stakes, and it is a race the Irish have fared well in with five of the last 10 winners trained by either Aidan O’Brien or his son Joseph.

The most dramatic running of the St Lege Stakes in recent memory came in 2015 wh Simple Verse and Bondi Beach were invo in a dramatic stewards’ enquiry The Aidan O’Brien-trained Bondi Beach was awarded race in the stewards’ room despite crossi the line in second place.
