Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

The team at Bath Racecourse are delighted to welcome you to our summer afternoon raceday on what promises to be a fantastic day’s racing.

I would like to give a warm welcome to the sponsors of today’s races – DragonBet and Lansdown Golf Club. We are delighted to be welcoming the team at DragonBet who will be having a major presence at 6 of our remaining racedays this year after deciding to add Bath to their sponsorship portfolio. DragonBet have a pitch outside the Langridge Grandstand as well as being fully online so for those that like a bet, I would strongly recommend paying the Dragonbet team a visit today.

Our friends at Lansdown Golf Club are sponsoring one race today and I would like to welcome the team there and their members in attendance this afternoon. For those of you that enjoy a round of golf, Lansdown Golf Club is a fantastic course that has the added benefit of some stunning scenery and welcoming clubhouse.

Finallyyou will see that we have Bath Kia here with ourselves today who are showcasing one of their cars. I would encourage you all to go over and see the friendly team who are located close to the Langride and County Grandstands. I would like to take this opportunity to thank these sponsors for their generosity and hope they all have an amazing afternoon today.

We have a brilliant line-up of racing this afternoon, consisting of seven competitive fields running today This will mark our final July fixture but also have an exciting line-up of racing and events throughout the remainder of the summer with August shaping up to be an incredible month of action. Highlights in August being our Rum & Reggae racenight on Friday 2nd August and our Cider Racenight featuring The Wurzels on Saturday 17th August.

In recent weeks, I have been incredibly impressed with the racing on the course, with some very competitive races and some exhilarating finishes. We also recently saw a very regular visitor to the winners enclosure at our last meeting, with Blue Hero recording an 8th winner here at Bath.

As you will see by the current state of the ground, our grounds team have been working tirelessly to produce a fantastic surface. I would like to thank them for their hard work along with the office team who have done a phenomenal job given the volume of racedays and events we have had recently I am forever grateful for their hard work and endeavours.

Best of luck to all connected with horses today and we wish you a fabulous afternoon here at Bath Racecourse.

We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital.

It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website www.bath-racecourse.co.uk.

TWILIGHT BALLET holds the best form so is fancied to go one better than his recent Lingfield second and get off the mark. Rage of Thunder appeals as the one to chase home Andrew Balding’s Twilight Son colt if, as expected, building on his debut Sandown seventh. Nala Star also has the form to play a part, while Richard Hannon’s newcomer Halfeti is worth a second look too, especially if the market speaks in her favour.
