ARDEX Introduction

ARDEX INNOVATION

For over 60 years ARDEX has been synonymous with the development, manufacture and marketing of premium quality specialist construction materials for the tiling, flooring and waterproofing industries. The heritage of ARDEX is a history of breakthrough innovations which have driven the market and changed the way it works. One example is the ARDEX K 15 Self-Levelling Sub-Floor Smoothing Compound – still one of the most popular ARDEX products to this day. Recent innovations are our decorative flooring solution PANDOMO®, or the ARDEX MICROTEC TECHNOLOGY in tiling products. The heart and origin of the ARDEX product development process is the central laboratory in Witten, Germany, plus several local centres of excellence around the world. This structure ensures our products’ consistent quality as well as our maximum responsiveness to local market needs. But innovation at ARDEX is not just limited to R&D. It is an organic system comprising cutting-edge customer insight research, close cooperation with associations and universities and strong interaction between sales, marketing, technical service, purchasing and R&D. As part of the Global ARDEX Group, ARDEX New Zealand Ltd has access to a huge Research and Development resource which is continually developing unique products and technologies.

1

ARDEX Microtec Technology A unique binding matrix made up of exclusive ARDEX materials, special cements and polymers combined with high performance fibres which improves adhesive strength, reduces the effect of shear strain and stress on the ARDEX tiling systems. ARDEX Rapidry Formula Technology Is the ability of the mortar to totally bind the water used for mixing, virtually eliminating the risk of water staining.

ARDEX Introduction

ARDEX Grout Shield Combats fungal and algal organisms which can lead to mould growth.

ARDEX AND OUR ENVIRONMENT

As part of our ongoing commitment to the environment, ARDEX is constantly looking to employ best environmental practices, whilst also developing new and existing products to reduce our ecological footprint. Utilising recycled rubber in place of sand for manufacturing a range of products is one of the ways ARDEX achieves this. By doing so, ARDEX not only contributes to the recycling of approximately 250,000 used tyres per year, but also saves approximately 3500 tonnes of sand per year.

The indoor air quality of buildings is also enhanced by using ARDEX products. A vast array of the high performance and commonly used ARDEX tiling products have been independently tested to meet the Green Building Council Green Star Specification for Office Interior (IEQ-13). The table below highlights currently approved products.

FLOOR TILING SYSTEMS - SUBSTRATE PREPARATION

Xxxxxxxx INTERNAL FLOORS Xxxxxxxx SAND/ CEMENT SCREED

New cement and sand screeds require at least 3 weeks drying time prior to fixing tiles. EXISTING CERAMIC TILING Ensure existing tiling is well adhered. Thorough cleaning and rinsing off is essential. Xxxxxxxxx TERRAZZO Xxxxxxxxx Ensure existing terrazzo is well adhered. Thorough Xxxxxxxx cleaning and rinsing off is essential; mechanical preparation may be required. CONCRETE Ensure that new concrete is at least 6 weeks old prior to tiling. Check that surface curing agents are removed. WET LOCATIONS Backgrounds should be water resistant and suitable for direct fixing. Tiles should be solid bed Xxxxxxxxx fixed.

BACKGROUND/ SUBSTRATE PREPARATION All backgrounds must be rigid, clean, stable and free from any barriers to adhesion such as dust, plaster droppings, grease, polish and any water softenable or loosely adhered materials. Good adhesion to a stable background is very important to guarantee the successful application of tiling. Surfaces to be tiled must be flat and when checked with a 2m straight edge, any gap under the straight edge between points of contact with the surface should not exceed 3mm. Any small scale irregularities should be pre-smoothed before tiling. If thinner layers need to be made up, consideration should be given to the use of the appropriate ARDEX smoothing compound.

TIMBER FLOORS Use ARDEX P82 or ARDEX P 51 with ARDEX S16/ ARDEX E90.

SAND/ CEMENT RENDER AND SCREED Wood float finish and prevent rapid drying out. Allow to air dry for at least 2 weeks (renders) or at least 3 weeks (screeds) prior to tiling. CONCRETE Allow at least 28 days drying time prior to fixing tiles onto new concrete. Ensure all formwork release agents are removed. EXISTING CERAMIC TILING Ensure existing tiling is well adhered and can support the new tile bed. Thorough cleaning and rinsing off is essential. BRICKWORK Allow new walls to dry for at least 6 weeks prior to direct fixing or rendering.

Tips & Techniques

TILE PRODUCT FIXING AND GROUTING TECHNIQUES

Tile Fixing Techniques The adhesive is applied to the prepared surface with a trowel and then combed through with a suitably sized notched trowel in straight ribs to give a ribbed mortar bed. The tiles should be fixed within the open time of the applied adhesive and pressed into place with a twisting and sliding action to achieve the required contact. For tiling to walls in dry internal locations the adhesive contact should be at least 85% of the back of the tile. When tiling to floors and all external locations, or in wet areas such as showers and swimming pools, solid bed fixing should be achieved. To achieve a solid bed usually requires the tiles to be buttered immediately prior to placing into the ribbed bed so no voids are left beneath the tiles. The size of notched trowel chosen depends on the tile size, the surface being tiled, the profile on the back of the tile and the degree of coverage required. When fixing floor tiles, a pourable adhesive can be used if preferred to enable solid bedding of the tiles without the need to butter the backs of the tiles.

85

Using a rubber squeegee work the cement-based mortar into the tile joints ensuring they are completely filled. Deep joints can usually be filled in one operation without the grout sagging in the joints. When the mortar firms up in the joints this allows for washing down to produce a virtually flush finish, with a smooth surface by using just a wet sponge. If an area is left with dried residue on the tile face prior to cleaning, the grout residues may, within the working time of the grout mortar, require moistening in order to make washing off easier. Any dry film remaining on the tile face after cleaning down can be easily removed by using a damp sponge once the mortar has hardened in the joints.

Tile Fixing and Grouting Techniques

Tile Grouting Technique with Cement-Based Grout

TILE FIXING AND GROUTING TECHNIQUES

Tile Grouting Technique with ARDEX WA Epoxy-Based Grout 1. First, ensure that you are ready with the correct tools and sufficient materials. Ensure that you have protective gloves, ample fresh water and have read the precautions on the containers.

2. Work the mortar into the dry joints immediately after mixing, using a suitable rubber backed squeegee, ensuring that the joints are completely filled. Some porous and matt finished tiles are prone to surface absorption of epoxy resin. To avoid shading variations apply the mortar over the entire tile surface.

Add the complete contents of the hardener container into the container of resin. Mix the resin and hardener together then transfer some of the mix back to the hardener container to disperse any hardener not transferred initially. Transfer this material back to the resin container then thoroughly mix the hardener and resin together until a uniform mortar is produced.

Tile Fixing and Grouting Techniques

86

Mixing should be carried out using a propeller type stirrer with a slow speed drill which will make mixing easier and faster. When mixed, the mortar should be removed from the container and spread out onto the wall or floor tiles or an impervious surface (e.g. metal plate), to ensure the maximum working time of the mortar by preventing selfheating in the container.

3. The use of a good rubber backed trowel/ squeegee removes virtually all surplus material from the surface of the tiles and will make cleaning easier. 4. Mist spray water onto the wall tile surface prior to emulsifying the grout residues.

5. Cleaning the residues from the surface of the tiles should proceed as soon after application as possible. Use a Scotchbrite速 pad and a little water, working in circular movements to emulsify the residues on the tile surface whilst applying gentle pressure.

TILE FIXING AND GROUTING TECHNIQUES

Blue pads PRODUCT should be used for cleaning ARDEX WA grey and white pads for ARDEX WA white. If the Scotchbrite速 pad is pressed too hard onto the tiled surface, more mortar will be removed from the joints. Take care to ensure that empty joints are kept dry and not accidentally filled with emulsified material.

6. Smooth the joint surface by gently wiping along the joint surface with a moist sponge to obtain a satisfactory finish. Carefully remove the emulsified material from the surface of the tiles with a squeezed out sponge, wiping with each face once before rinsing again in clear water. Water should be changed on a regular basis.

7. Once the cleaning has been completed, the joints should be allowed to harden sufficiently before a final clean down to remove any residual film which may remain after wiping with a sponge. The use of a Scotchbrite速 pad and water will remove this film, this final cleaning should be carried out within 24 hours of application.

87

Tile Fixing and Grouting Techniques

A square cut sponge wiped diagonally across the surface of the tiles will leave the joints as flush as possible. Slowly wipe across to allow the sponge time to absorb the slurry as it passes over the tiled surface.

JOINT DESIGN

A Lasting Seal The function of silicone is to accommodate movement and to do this it needs to expand and contract freely. Proper joint design will ensure the silicone provides a lasting seal. Make sure: • The silicone is bound on two sides, not all three. • Do not fill the joint, the thickness of the silicone should be half the joint width. • Maximum joint width is 30mm and thickness 15mm. Minimum is 6mm wide /6mm thick. • A backing rod at the base allows the silicone to move freely and is economical.

NATURAL STONE TILES

FixingPRODUCT Natural Stone Tiles When fixing and grouting natural stone wall or floor tiles that are prone to water staining, reference should be made to the use of the ‘Rapidry Formula’ range of products as described in the table below. The ARDEX natural stone range is designed to work together as an integrated system solution for total peace of mind. Each ARDEX natural stone product is the result of continuous research and development, with the help of natural stone tile manufacturers and fixers, to ensure product compatibility and market leading performance, courtesy of the innovative ARDEX Rapidry Formula technology. The ‘Rapidry Formula’ system binds the mix water within the adhesive or grout virtually eliminating the risk of water staining and guaranteeing the best possible finish to all natural stone tile applications. The added benefits of rapid drying and rapid hardening make the full range of products ideal for the demands of working environments when downtime needs to be minimised.

Moisture sensitive natural stone tiles grouted with a traditional cement-based grout, resulting in unsightly water staining at the tile edges.

Moisture sensitive natural stone tiles grouted with ARDEX MG Rapid Drying Marble and Natural Stone Grout. ARDEX ‘Rapidry Formula’ technology locks the mix water into the grout, eliminating water staining at the tile edges.

IMPORTANCE OF SUBSTRATE PREPARATION

Each substrate is prepared in its own way; this is because every substrate has different properties that need to be considered. For example, timber has a high degree of movement and hence a highly flexible adhesive is needed. In general, we prepare the substrate to ensure a good bond between the tile and the substrate is achieved. Basic Requirements • Must be clean and free from dirt, dust, oil, grease, laitance, paint, old adhesive and other materials that can cause a barrier to adhesion • Structurally sound and strong enough to support the weight of the tiles being fixed • Ensure surfaces are dry before tiling with no residue or permanent damp • The substrate required drying time is allowed to lapse, as per AS/NZ Standards • Prime porous substrates Substrate preparation is critical to the performance of the whole system. Bad preparation is one of the main reasons for tiling system failures.
