I come from a big family. 7 kids. And my brothers and sisters were always there for me. Sure, sometimes we fought: we got on each other’s nerves; said mean things; put masking tape down the room and told each other to stay on your own side. But deep down, we always knew that we loved one another: we stopped fighting; the masking tape came up. And no matter what happened, we took care of each other. We had each other’s backs.

This play is about a family who is having a rough time – as all families do from time to time. What keeps this family going is the kids: Hans and Gretel Brinker. And more importantly, what keeps the family going is how these kids support each other. They have each other’s backs.

We can also choose who becomes part of our family. Best friends can become like brothers and sisters. One of the most important thing about having best friends is that you know that they will be there for you.

That’s what I love about this story. It is about two kids who are very brave, refuse to give up, have a lot of grit. And together, they are even braver, more hopeful, and more determined. They get on each other’s nerves, but they bring out the best in one another. I think that’s something we should all try to do: surround ourselves with people who bring out the best in us.

This play is based on a book that was written by Mary Mapes Dodge in 1865. But the play you are seeing is brand new – you are the first audience in the world to see it. The play is written

by Laura Eason, who also writes for a popular television show for adults called House of Cards. The reason I’m telling you this is because I want you to know that very successful writers are writing brand new plays for you to enjoy. Even when we take you to faraway places in our plays – in this case, to a small town in Holland over 150 years ago – we want you to see yourselves in these stories. These stories are for you.

DIRECTOR’S Notes When I meet new people I try to imagine how they live.

I picture a house or an apartment, a neighborhood, the furniture, the pictures on the walls. I imagine how they talk to each other, how they interact. I even imagine the smells in their home.

I can’t help myself. It’s a habit. My initial imaginings stick, so whenever I speak about new friends, I picture them in MY version of

their lives.

Until I actually investigate. Over time, I’ve actively checked out my predictions.

My new friends never live where I picture them, they don’t talk to each other as I imagine, I get the color of their walls all wrong, their neighborhoods don’t look like what I see in my mind.

I’m always wrong.

That’s because I only think of what I’ve seen before. I see things in terms of houses I’ve already been in, in terms of movies I’ve seen, books I’ve already read.

Other people’s lives are challenging for me to imagine. New people always bring something new to the mix. In many ways they’re unprecedented. It’s very hard to predict what someone else’s life is like, really, without actually seeing, without actually investigating.

Maybe that’s what separates us. We can’t imagine how others live until we actually investigate.

Heidi does just that in our Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates. She investigates. And she begins to empathize with the Brinkers. She sees their plight. She understands, and likes what she finds. Katrinka Vos doesn’t want to take the time.

There’s magic in the act of walking in someone else’s shoes. Or in this case, skating in someone else’s skates.

Some of the magic in our lives comes when we really take time to understand someone else. That time is a small, but meaningful act of kindness. A gift we can give freely, at any time. It doesn’t cost much. Hope – for us, for our lives, for our fellow beings – is built out of similar magical, and tiny acts of kindness.

Her play Sex with Strangers (Sydney Theatre Company, Australia; Steppenwolf Theatre, Chicago) played at Second Stage Theatre in New York and is one TCG’s most produced plays of 2015/16. She is an executive story editor on season four of the Emmy winning Netflix show House of Cards after serving as a staff writer on season two (WGA nomination for Outstanding Achievement in a Drama Series) and a story editor on season three. Her new musical, Days Like Today, with music and lyrics by Alan Schmuckler, was produced at Writers’ Theatre in Chicago. Her adaptation of Around the World in 80 Days (Lookingglass Theatre, Chicago; Baltimore CENTERSTAGE; KC Rep) will play at the St. James in London in the fall of 2015.

She has received Chicago’s Jeff Award for New Work and Adaptation. In New York, she is a member of Rising Phoenix Rep, an Affiliated Artist of New Georges and an alumna of the Women’s Project Playwright’s Lab. She is an active ensemble member and former Artistic Director of Lookingglass Theatre Company in Chicago, recipient of the 2011 Regional Theatre Tony Award.

Laura is a graduate of the Performance Studies Department of Northwestern University. Originally from Chicago, she lives in Brooklyn, NY. WHIT MACLAUGHLIN (Director) is an OBIE and Barrymore Award-winning director of works for the stage. He serves as Artistic Director of New Paradise Laboratories, where he has created 20 original works since 1996, including last year’s The Adults. He is a recipient of a 2002 Pew Charitable Trust Fellowship in Performance Art. His work with NPL has been presented at the Ontological Theatre, the Connelly Theatre, and PS 122 in NYC, at the Walker Art Center, the Warhol Museum, by commission at the Humana Festival of New American Plays, and at the Prague Quadrennial. He is also the Artistic Director of PAPAYA (PA Performing Arts for Young Audiences) which produces and presents sophisticated performance for audiences of all ages. He has distinguished himself in Philadelphia at the helm of many of the Arden Theatre’s works for young audiences, including Charlotte’s Web, Cinderella, A Year with Frog and Toad, and Sideways Stories from Wayside School. TERRENCE J. NOLEN (Producing Artistic Director) is co-founder and Producing Artistic Director of Arden Theatre Company. Favorite Arden productions include all-Philadelphia casts of August: Osage County; Death of a Salesman; The Grapes of Wrath and Hedda Gabler and such musicals as Next to Normal; Sweeney Todd; Pacific Overtures; Violet; and Caroline, or Change. Terry directed the inaugural production of Arden Children’s Theatre, Charlotte’s Web. He has directed sixteen world-premiere plays. Terry has been nominated for 24 and awarded 6 Barrymore Awards for his directing work at the Arden. He directed Michael Hollinger’s Opus at Primary Stages in New York and was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Director. His short film The Personal Touch was nominated for an Emmy Award.

AMY L. MURPHY (Managing Director) A Philadelphia native, Amy co-founded the Arden in 1988 with Terrence J. Nolen and Aaron Posner. She is especially proud of the Arden Professional Apprentice program and its contribution to the Philadelphia cultural community. A graduate of Susquehanna University, Amy received the university’s first-ever Young Alumni Achievement Award. She completed the Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders-Arts. Amy serves on the Board of the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance and Theatre Philadelphia. She has served on panels for the National Endowment for the Arts, the New Jersey State Arts Council, Theatre Communications Group and the Philadelphia Cultural Fund. She has also served on the Executive Committee of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT) and the Local Advisory Council of the Non Profit Finance Fund. Amy was named a Hepburn Fellow 2008-9 by the Katharine Houghton Hepburn Center at Bryn Mawr College.

ARDEN THEATRE COMPANY Founded in 1988, Arden Theatre Company is dedicated to bringing to life great stories by great storytellers–on the stage, in the classroom, and in the community. We stage five productions each season as part of our mainstage series and two productions through Arden Children’s Theatre, the city’s first resident professional children’s theatre program.

We create and produce new work through the Independence Foundation New Play Showcase. The Arden Professional Apprenticeship program trains future theatre leaders, and Arden Drama School classes teach children and teens about the craft of making plays. Our in-school arts education program, Arden For All, makes our work available to the entire community through subsidized tickets and books for economically disadvantaged young people, and our Arden Arts Education Fund provides scholarships for Arden Drama School classes and camps. COMING THIS SPRING: THE AND OTHER FAIRLY STUPID TALES At the Arden, one of our favorite things to do each year is find stories to tell on our stage for kids just like you.

Sometimes we choose our favorite books to put on stage – like Sideway Stories from Wayside School and The Cat in the Hat. Sometimes we imagine new ways to tell classic stories that we all know – like Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella. And sometimes we write new versions of those stories – like The Jungle Book – and you get to be the very first audience to see it!

This spring we’re going to tell a story called The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales. It is based on a book written by Jon Scieszka and illustrated by Lane Smith (if you like to read, we recommend that you check out the book. The illustrations are awesome). This story takes a lot of fairy tale characters that you may already know – Cinderella, Little Red Ridinghood, Chicken Little and the Ugly Duckling – and brings them together to make a play, led by Jack (of “and the Beanstalk” fame) as the narrator. But their production goes horribly wrong when the Table of Contents goes missing, Jack’s Giant shows up and threatens to eat everybody, and the stinkiest fairy tale character of them all – the Stinky Cheese Man – walks into the room and really smells up the place.

This show is wacky, full of fun songs, and super gross – we think you’re really going to like it. It also has some of our favorite actors in the show. Doug Hara, who played the Cat in The Cat in the Hat and the Cricket in Pinocchio, will be playing Jack. Rachel Camp, who was Mrs. Jewls in Sideway Stories and who is playing Dame Brinker and Katrinka in Hans Brinker, will be playing Little Red Ridinghood. Leah Walton and Brandon Pierce, who were the Goose and Avery in Charlotte’s Web are also in the cast, along with a new friend of ours named Scott Sheppard who will be playing the odorous Stinky Cheese Man. Be sure to check out The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales when it starts performances next April. We can’t wait for you to see it.
