Friday, November 5 We arrive in Houston right in the middle of rush hour. I have no idea how this happens, but it does: No matter which direction we come from or when we leave, when we are heading to Houston, we’re going to arrive there between 5 and 6PM. Period. It’s a curse, I’m sure. This time we’re coming in from New Orleans, where we’ve spent four days with Katherine Engen, of Valley Ridge, accompanying her as she scouts shops and museums and cool places for the students who’re taking Michael deMeng’s workshop there in February. We have a marvelous time, and we spend one evening with Thomas Mann, who prepares an elaborate four-hour dinner in his home, the former Rose Tattoo bar. After a wild 1:30AM taxi ride through Uptown back to our hotels, though, even this Houston traffic seems tame, although there’s sure a lot of it. Once past the traffic, we pick up veggies at Central Market and head to our hotel for a quiet evening. After the nightlife of the French Quarter, this is wonderful, indeed.
