or factories. In the 90’s bands suddenly had complete freedom but what, how and why do it? This led to some confusion, because they no longer had to prove something to anyone else, but only themselves - their talent, creativity. Music journalist Uldis Rudaks was asked to describe 90’s in Latvian music, he says: “90’s for the Latvian music is complicated time. Latvians had to show what they are capable of. 80’s was still in the Soviet Union, there were bands, to be socalled awakening bands - *Pērkons (Thunder), *Līvi (Livs), Jumprava. They each had the anti-Soviet songs. Then all of a sudden no longer any restrictions - no more censorship, you are allowed to do whatever you want. You can go abroad to buy good musical instruments, be written in foreign studies - if you have the money. It was the test of Latvian music scene and musical creativity”. Music continued to be made. Such mainstream bands like Jumprava, Līvi, Pērkons, as well as the underground music major influences such as *Dzeltenie Pastnieki (Yellow Postman), Zig Zag and other bands. Since 1985, Inokentijs Mārpls is one of the Latvian underground music scenes most visible and influential bands. Then gradually other bands started to arise, which was not intended to become known to the general public. For example, underground band drummer Maris Čistovs aka. *Šakālis (Jackal) was asked “whether underground culture is looking for its audience - it wants to say something, or it’s been played for fun?” to which he replied “This is most certainly just having fun!”. In 1989 Jānis Daugavietis and friends set up a rock band entitled *“Ir Bijuši Mati Un Izbijuši“ (The hair was, and is no longer). Along with band members they began to look for like-minded people to create new bands. - *Bez Greznības (Without the Luxury), *Tukša Muca (Empty Cask), Silvis and Inokentijs Mārpls were formed.
