In traditional Chinese culture, people usually age with their families and, unfortunately, because of the dramatic change in the economy and social structure that has changed over time, senior citizens usually do not have their families around. Their children and grandchildren are moving out of the city, even moving out of the region. Plus, seniors do not live in the communities they used to live in. And thus, pets become a natural conclusion from that: pets provide company and comfort to these lonely people. And also, pet is natural ice breaker for human beings to have an unconscious conversation.

This project aims to create a viable transformation and neotype: a “pet-positive senior community” that emphasizes the connection between seniors and social life as a shared natural, spatial and perceptual experience.

To respond to the four older adult stigmas, namely, mobility loss, hearing loss and visual impairment, strength impairment, and loneliness, four principles have been developed in this design: accessibility, rest/respite, navigation and safety, and connection.

Accessibility: The center of the passage axis is located in front of the senior apartment main lobby on the ground floor, emphasized by the light well above. This bright spot will always guide people to the entrance.

Respite/Rest: Stairs are a significant piece in this project: there are moments while you are climbing and you are moving vertically, but there are other moments where you have respite with smaller flat areas, and these areas with persuade seating and a place for viewing. Connection: - All the pieces of artwork - The actual connector - Two transparent LED screens hang on the apartment facade and animal center

Safety and Navigation: Two parking lots, one for commercial use and one for residents and staff, are located on the two ends of the site, both of which are completely separated from the public open spaces in order to protect seniors from any traffic.

navy yard waterfront vessel PIGMENTAL STUDIO DESIGN 艺术工作室

Pigmental Studios is a creative animated film production company based in Los Angeles, CA. With the intention to relocate and grow, their new office will be in the Navy Yard water front in Washington, DC. The Navy Yard master plan of the waterfront is saving and restoring its history and significance. Our vision for this project is echoing the waterfront’s past by reintroducing the design with a form of a vessel. With the design having the form of a vessel, it will pay a tribute to the pass and enhance the community with a grand landmark as a communal node.

This innovative Pigmental Studios design will be comprised of two structures connecting to each other by a subdued atrium. One will be smaller in scale but playful. The bigger structure is the anchoring vessel with a prominent allure. This represents the linking between the Navy Yard community and Pigmental Studios.

Significantly, underneath the cantilever is a high-resolution LED screen. This allows Pigmental Studios to debut their current projects or movies to the public. Different sizes of the platforms built into the stairs allows for the community to congregate for screenings or just to relax and admire the Anacostia River.

A grand gesture that Pigmental Studios are extending out to the community is the exaggerated cantilever of the truss system. The meticulous design of the cantilever hovers over the monumental stairs creating shading in the summer and allowing heat to pass through in the winter. ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO HAOMIN YANG

The anchoring vessel structure is a combination of translucent glass on the bottom and frit glass on top. The translucent glass allows for Pigmental Studios to showcase their creative process to the community. The more private areas are hidden behind the double skins, solid and frit glass. Between the double skin envelopes is the bracing trusses. These bracing trusses are highlighted by LED light chains hanging from the interior of the frit wall.

agrarian urbanism EAST FREDERICK GROWING CAMPUS 田园城市

This urban design project is proposing agrarian urbanism on this municipal owned property, to inherit traditional practice of agriculture of East Frederick in Maryland. The fundamental design concept is to use urban succession and an agrarian growing gridiron to generate new kinds of urban public places, serving for the upcoming 1,050 residential-units community right across from the major arterial, Monocacy Boulevard.

ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

Group Project (3 individuals) Project Type: Urban Design Location: Frederick, MD

The major urban axis is a downhill water channel featured by terracing rain garden, bioswales along the way, running across an over 80,000 urban wild food forests planted with edible trees and shrubs. The mechanism of the scheme is modulated, as 25’x100’x25’, to create maximum flexibility for vegetable growing pattern and usage. Upon copmpletion, this urban design scheme will provide industrial agriculture units at 180,000 sqft, a gourmet food market, local retail businesses and a grocery store. To improve and encourage community engagement, the community garden will be placed at the far north side, connecting the site to existing green amenity – Monocacy River.

corners SUSTAINABLE HOUSE 新绿色住宅

This project is a preliminary design of the 2017 Solar Decathlon. According to the 2017SD guideline, the design is creating a prototype that advances and demonstrates regenerative design principles, creating a home that functions as an integral part of its environment, harvesting energy and water from the site and from ongoing home use, returning nutrients to soil, and promoting a healthy modern lifestyle for its occupants and the community.

HAOMIN YANG

ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

Group Project (2 individuals) Project Type: Residential Location: Bylas, Arizona

23

We also worked with a tribe of indigenous people in Bylas, Arizona, who are interested in creating a sustainable community of over hundred homes based on the principles explored and illustrated in the SD2017 prototype. Our goal was creating not just one prototype, but a family of houses based on regenerative design principles, facilitating variations in size and configuration, to meet the diverse needs of a real community.

The design features a utility core that acts as the soul of the house. This space is composed with vegetable garden on the top and cistern on the bottom that modulates and controls the flow of energy, water and nutrients through the site, both indoors and outdoors.

The design also features a diversity corner design and flexible wall that includes pivot, sliding and folding and thus creates four types of “courtyard.

Bylas receives only about 9 inches of rainfall a year, and thus the water is an important focus of the design. The house is being designed to harvest rainwater from the roof, and then filter and sterilize it for potable uses.

research projects ARCHAEOLOGY _ APERLAI, TURKEY

AperlaI Trail Plan

ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

Aperlai is located on the Sicak Peninsula. We went there by boat. Our team’s work is to document the topography of Aperlai, which starts at the shoreline and ends up to the north fortification wall. We started from drawing the primary 5 meters contour line and filled 1-meter intervals in between. Then, we finalized all the topo changes around buildings, churches, towers, agora, and fortification walls by walking through the entire city of Aperlai.
