Heritage Handmade Garden Collections - 2025 Catalogue

Page 1

Welcome to our 2025 Heritage Handmade Garden Collections Catalogue.

With our first year as a new company behind us we continue to enjoy developing and refining the Heritage Handmade Garden Collections (HHGC) brand. Instagram and the occasional email are the way we communicate throughout the year, however, it is our annual catalogue that we see as the best way to present our extensive garden collections to our most loyal clients.

In HHGC we employ a wide variety of materials to recreate the very best of classic garden design, utilising traditional craftsmanship to handmake each item individually to your order. We now have over two hundred products within our six collections and, together with bespoke commissions and our inventory of fine garden antiques from our sister company Architectural Heritage Ltd, we endeavour to accommodate all your garden planter, water feature and ornament requirements, for projects both large and small.

We are also proud to continue our long-term partnership with the National Trust as we raise, through sales of the Sissinghurst Castle Garden Copper Planter and Mount Stewart Dodo, a significant sum to assist Europe’s biggest conservation charity to care for fine historic properties and iconic landscapes for us all to enjoy.

I wish as always to thank you for your kind interest and support as we strive to offer the very best quality garden planters, fountains and ornamentation available, with a service to match.

With kind regards

The Sissinghurst Castle Garden Copper Planters

Sissinghurst Estate was a ruin when purchased by Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson in 1930. After three years of clearing the longovergrown land, the creation of ‘a garden where none was’ became a joint labour of love that would last for over three decades.

In general, Harold was responsible for the design and layout along strong architectural lines, while Vita (so named to differentiate her from her mother, also a Victoria) was the head of her team of gardeners, innovating with informal planting schemes to give visitors a

horticultural experience of discovery and exploration.

First opened to the public in 1937, the gardens ‘drew on the sense of an abandoned past’ with the old Tower at its ancient heart. Although the White Garden is the most well-known of Sissinghurst’s ten garden rooms, the Cottage Garden by contrast has a sunset planting scheme of hot colours, warm reds and golds, shouting in a riot of colour in late summer and autumn. Here, in the centre of the garden nestled between four tall Irish yews, is an original Copper Copper. Probably found locally (maybe even in the Tower) this now planter is a remnant of some longoutdated Victorian water heating system, here reused by Vita as an axis feature.

Poignantly, Vita wrote in 1959 ‘his scoop… it is still there – a

little hollow in one of the stones near the central copper basin’, Harold used it to measure how much rain had fallen in the night. Vita’s garden that ‘tethered her floating heart’ thankfully remains to this day for us all to enjoy.

Invited by the National Trust, who now look after Sissinghurst Castle Garden for the nation, we are proud to have faithfully copied the original planter down to the last rivet. Fashioned from the same grade of thick sheet brass, we have fabricated the distinctive bulbous shape and Verdigris patinated The Sissinghurst Castle Garden Copper Planter into three sizes, with the original flat edge and now with a rolled edge version.

The Mount Stewart Dodo

First recorded in 1598, the Dodo (Raphus cucullatus) was endemic to the Island of Mauritius, sadly being declared extinct by 1662.

Mount Stewart sits grandly beside Strangford Lough on the west coast of Northern Ireland. The estate, now in custodianship of the National Trust, is today restored to the vision of Lady Edith, Marchioness of Londonderry.

A debutant in 1899, Edith was married the same year to Charles (Charley) Vane-Tempest-Stewart, later the 7th Marquess of Londonderry. A woman of both charm and character (having a snake

tattoo on her leg!), Edith was a persuasive suffragist and founder of the Woman’s Legion, receiving a Damehood for her services.

With a house on Park Lane, London, Lady Edith hosted society soirées for the great and the good of the day. Latterly, during the War, she convened convivial gatherings, which came to be known as the Ark, these meetings continuing at Mount Stewart where Edith and family moved to as their primary residence in 1919. For fun, Ark members were given animal names such as: Winston (Churchill) the Warlock, Lady Astor was Nancy the Gnat, Harold (Macmillan) the Hummingbird and the Prince of Wales was David the Dragon. The Dodo referenced Edith’s Father, Lord Chaplin, a member of Parliament for over 35 years and so ‘in danger of extinction’. Their perennial host, Lady Edith, being Circe the Sorceress and her Husband Charley the/a Cheetah!

With her loyal gardener Thomas Bolas, Edith set out in 1921 on the thirty-year journey to extend and improve the Gardens of Mount Stewart. With her influences ranging from the Italianate, see Boboli Gardens, and Villa Farnese, to an exotic mix of legend and folklore, all within the microclimate of the Ards Peninsular ‘a gardeners paradise’, which allows almost anything to grow…

With a touch of Alice in Wonderland, the Dodo Terrace and Ark, alongside a multitude of animals (Ark Members), were fashioned and cast by a local builder, one Mr Thomas Beattie, ranging from Frog to Fox, Dragon to Dinosaur; sitting alongside many a Baboon-capped column and other exotic ornament that proliferate the Italian garden. Here we have sought to replicate the iconic Mount Stewart Dodo, now carved in natural limestone, to the original, medium and small sizes.
