The project involves the memories, heroic contribution and spirit of Pritilata Waddedar who was an anti-British pro-India revolutionary in East Bengal, presently in Bangladesh. Her birthplace, the village Dholghat at Patia is considered as the site of the project. Pritilata Smriti Shongshod, which is the main concerning body, considers the project as an attempt to promote the village locality by providing facilities and spread the spirit and philosophy of the great revolutionary.

1

In an architectural aspect the project includes a great challenge, which is to express the spirit of the revolutionaries in the local context and reach the new generation with the original history and sacriďŹ ce of the heroes who brought us the freedom.

Site: The area of the site is 4.1 acre. Pritilata Smriti Shongshod Owns the land. The area is characterized by numerous ponds and green rice ďŹ elds.

LOCAL CONTEXT

Local settlement pattern:

Site access:

The economy of the villagers is agrarian. Most families own lands, in which they harvest. Families usually select a suitable piece of land (Vita) near their harvesting fields to build houses. Vitas are comparatively higher lands to keep the housing settlements dry even during the flood. Clusters are characterized by private courtyards and indirect entry.

Local people actually do not move around through a designed network of walkways or roads. People usually use the dividers of the paddy fields (known as “Aile”) as their paths. in this context the prominent mouja lines are considered as site entry.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT Defining two functions: The project has two different functions. Preserving the spirit and Executing the spirit. The left portion contains social facilities which will be mostly used by the local people and the right portion contains the spirit. A visitor’s walkway (noted with red color in the sketch) will connect them so that a visitor can first know the history and feel the spirit of Pritilata Waddedar and then visit the complex which facilitates the local users with educational and social facilities. Segregating the divine: Pritilata was the first women to join Surya Sen’s army. This extraordinary act brings Pritilata to a different level of achievement which is reflected in the project by arranging the structures. The mass that contains the exhibits and history, is conciously separated from the others and placed on the visitor’s walkway.

SPIRITUAL WALK

6. The tunnel

5. Exhibition hall

A dark tunnel with dramatic lighting is designed at the end of the spiritual walk. This space describes Pritilata’s last mission where she sacrificed her life. The tunnel opens up in the wide open green landscape where structures are designed to facilitate the local community. This incident symbolizes the achievements of Pritilata and makes the visitor realize what she fought for.

A monumental building is designed at the end of the circuitous path. The shape of the structure is identical to the shape of the entrance plaza. The building contains the remainings of Pritilata.

The visitor’s journey is designed to start from a green tranquil point with distant view of the monuments which are ahead of the path. It symbolizes the childhood of Pritilata when she dreamt to fight for her country and freedom.

This segment of the journey is dedicated to the revolutionaries who had indirect impacts on Pritilata’s early life. Monumental walls, bearing their name and history are designed along the path

Larger monuments with spiritual spaces are designed in this portion of the path which contains historical records of the revolutionaries who made direct impacts on Pritilats’s college life.

lofty walkways, dramatic apertures and monumental forms are designed to represent and exhibit the events of pritilata’s life when she met and joined the army of famous revolutionary Surya Sen.

The project is located at the newly evolved business district of Banani. The core idea was to design a 10 storied commercial development which reflects the resplendent ambient of the location and facilitate the pedestrians and users in an urban context. The microclimate of the area, building functionality and user's demand for a machine finished commercial look was also in consideration. The project is in a corner plot with 20 meter road at north and 10 meter road at west. The site has an area of 343 sqm (approximately 5 katha). Chosen ground coverage is 52.5% of the land area (180 sqm). The core and service areas are placed at the back end to facilitate the usable area with charming roadside views. The ground floor is planned for shops and remaining upper floors are dedicated for small offices. The glazed surfaces at front of the mass permit sufficient amount of light which sculpts the interior spaces. Green areas with potted plants are designed in each floor so the office occupants can have a refreshing view during work time. The project has 9 consecutive floors dedicated to small offices which demand a space for social interaction and recreation. Therefore, the roof is designed as a contained space which delivers a picturesque view of the cityscape including the Gulshan Lake.

Roads along the site are full of chaos throughout the day. The existing roadside commercial structures and shops provide no space for a proper pedestrian movement. Studying this overcrowded situation we tried to create a relief for pedestrians and shoppers. The structure is placed at the far most corner of the site to create a grand plaza at front. First two oors are recessed at front and an extended slab is designed at 2nd oor to contain the entry space and enhance the grandness of the plaza. This creates an approximately 11 meter wide vacant space which contrasts the surrounding chaotic environment and brings relief to the pedestrians and shoppers. The western surface of the building mass is exposed to dire sun after mid day. To reduce the heat gain, a vertical louver system is adopted. The louver surface is placed a meter apart from the building surface so the southern air can carry out the remaining heat. In addition, the vertical louver surfaces catch less dust particles and remain clean. Three colorful inclined surfaces are included in the screening system to break the monotony and match the colorful mood of road 11.

This particular design has the challenge to protect the housing units from western sun while creating large openings to ensure views of the park. A grid of projected concrete ďŹ n is developed to serve the situation. These ďŹ ns cut the sun and frames the views towards the green park. The grid is altered and highlighted at some places to break the monotony of the facade. The grid reforms at the ground level and creates the entrance.

The site is located near the newly evolved commercial belt of Banani. There is a high demand for small office spaces in the area. The project program is devised concerning this issue. The ten storied structure is designed to accomodate nine small offices where each floor contains facilities for an individual office. The ground level is planned to arrange nine parking spaces and other building services. The roof is designed to serve as a break out space for the offices. The area of the site is approximately 314 sqm. It is a rectengular corner plot with roads at north and west. The site is highly visible from the adjacent roads, specially from the wesern main road. The plot is surrounded by mid rise structures at north and east. There are low rise atructures at west and south. The project demands an iconic expression and visual exposure to express its nature as an efficient and modern office building. The facades are designed concerning the issue. Glazed surfaces and perforated concrete screens are used in an orderly composition to enhance the beauty while maintaining the climatic issues. In the typical floor plan, service zone is placed at the south east corner which is the back of the site and lacks the view due to the neighbouring mid rise structutes. Work spaces are placed at the front to permit wide open views. Glazed surfaces are designed surrounding the work spaces to allow sufficient natural light

DESCO (Dhaka Electric Supply Company Ltd.) is planning to build a 12 storied commercial building for their head office. DESCO is a public limited company which distributes electricity at the northern parts of Dhaka City Corporation area and was created on November 1996. The uniqueness and contribution of DESCO in the field of national development asked for the challenge of making an iconic, bold and statement oriented physical entity. The proposed commercial development would be actively considered in conjunction with key design parameters such as local climate conditions, site, energy consumption, local materials, construction method etc. The concept recognize the urgency to respond to the city’s social needs by enhancing the urban public realm.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Neighbouring highrises are blocking the natural light and ventilation at north and south.

Basic volume, having very deep office space and less relationship with the surrounding.

Spliting the volume in two parts to ensure efficient office space with natural lights.

Optimizing the corner edge to enhance views towards the lake and the highway.

Connecting the volumes.

Creating terraces and alcoves to ensure visual connections

Fin density concerning climate
