ROLAND BARTHES’ PUBLICATION ENTITLED THE FASHION SYSTEM TRACES SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE STRUCTURES OF FASHION & ARCHITECTURE DESIGN FIELDS. BARTHES OBSERVES THAT BOTH FIELDS ARE SYSTEMS, THAT CONSIST OF THREE PARTS: PRODUCTS, IMAGES & WORDS. MORE PRECISELY: THEY PRODUCE MATERIAL OBJECTS WHICH ARE ADEQUATELY DESCRIBED BY PICTURES & CRITICIZED BY THE USE OF WORDS. THE ABOVE NOTION CAN BE FOUND AT THE CORE OF THIS STUDY WHICH EMPLOYS DIVERSE ISSUES OF VOGUE PARIS, DURING THE MODERN MOVEMENT ERA IN ORDER TO INVESTIGATE THE SIMULTANEOUS PERFORMANCE OF FASHION & INTERIOR DESIGN/ ARCHITECTURE PRACTICES OF THAT PERIOD, ALONG WITH ITS DISTINCTIVE CHARACTERICTICS.

LUCIEN VOGEL, GRADUATE OF L’ÉCOLE ALSACIENNE, WAS THE FIRST ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF VOGUE PARIS. HE GATHERED THE CRÈME DE LA CRÈME MEMBERS OF THE ARTISTIC SCENE OF THE ERA & BY FOCUSING ON A MINIMAL IDENTITY FEATURING MATTE COLOUR PALETTES & CLEAR, SHARP LINES HE ESTABLISHED A FIRM, INFALLIBLE VISUAL STYLE.

STUDENTS OF L’ÉCOLE DES BEAUX-ARTS IN PARIS, SUCH AS GEORGES LEPAPE, GEORGE BARBIER & PAUL IRIBE, APPLIED THE ABSTRACT, GEOMETRICAL FORMS, THAT WERE BEING THOROUGHLY USED IN THE FIELD OF FINE ARTS, TO THEIR VISUAL EXPERIMENTS WITH FASHION ILLUSTRATION, BACK IN 1908. YET, THE EXPRESSIVE CLIMAX OF THIS CREATIVE EXPERIMENTATION BECAME MORE EVIDENT IN THE NINETEEN THIRTIES.
