  Ticket information for football state semifinal Hoban football (12-1) faces Columbus St. Francis DeSales (13-0), on Saturday, Nov. 26, at Mansfield Arlin Field (MAP) at 7 p.m.  Tickets will be on sale in the athletic office Tuesday from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.  and Wednesday from 8 a.m. until noon. online for viewing. This annual report documents the giving level of Hoban's generous donors between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016. The Hoban administration, board of directors, faculty, staff and most of all students, thank each one of you who have so generously kept Hoban a part of your annual giving. The 2015-16 Annual Report will be mailed with the Fall Hoban Magazine at a later date. To view, click HERE.

Canned Food Drive in full swing The entire Hoban family is working hard to reach the canned food drive goal this year. Final totals are not yet in, but these cans will go to at least ten organizations in the Akron area and will benefit greatly from the cans and money that have been donated. 

#Giving Tuesday is Nov. 29, 2016

This year Hoban will be participating in the National Day of Giving on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Funds raised during this campaign will be used to thank the Hoban faculty and staff by remodeling the current "lounge" into a new faculty and staff commons. The Hoban community should watch for an email with information and an online link for donating. Donors will have the opportunity to honor a special teacher, staff member or coach (past or present) by donating in their name. Students will have the opportunity to write a note of thanks to a special person during lunch on Monday and Tuesday.

Grandparents and Grandfriends Day is Dec. 11. For more information and to register online, click HERE. The Extravaganza Ladies Luncheon  The Ladies Luncheon was Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2016, at the Fairlawn Country Club. Attendees were asked to donate a gift in the value of $55 or more. These gifts will help fill the silent auction room with beautiful and unique items. The guest speaker during the luncheon was Dr. Terry Gordon, author of the International Best Seller No Storm Lasts Forever. For pictures of the event, click HERE.

Meet the new 'Hoban Dog'


Brother Bob introduced the new Hoban dog to the student body after the All Saints' Mass Nov. 1. His name is Wilson and he is a Schnoodle, which is a Schnauzer-Poodle mix.

Academic and Chivalrous Knights announced for first quarter Each grading period two students from each grade level


are selected by the Academic Review Board to be Academic Knights and Chivalrous Knights. Academic Knights excel in scholarship. They also demonstrate leadership, service to the Hoban family, service to the community, Christian values and good character. Chivalrous Knights exhibit industriousness in the classroom, outstanding effort, involvement in student activities, Christian values, and a polite, positive and helpful attitude toward others. Beacon Journal puts Jabari Taylor in Spotlight Senior football player Jabari Taylor was recognized in the High School Spotlight, a weekly feature of the Beacon Journal and Ohio.com. Taylor made 11 tackles, three sacks and four tackles-for-loss in Hoban’s 21-7 win against St. Vincent-St. Mary in the OHSAA Division III regional semifinal on Nov. 12.


Burrington recognized in Beacon Journal sports section Mikey Burrington, a junior soccer player, appeared in the High School Spotlight, a weekly feature of the Akron Beacon Journal and Ohio.com, on Oct. 27. He scored two goals in Hoban’s 3-0 win over Wadsworth last week in a Division I sectional final played at St. Vincent-St. Mary. The Knights are the No. 4 seed in the Medina district.

Freshman class officers elected The freshman class elected class officers after hearing their speeches at an assembly on Tuesday. The president is Patrick Sullivan from Holy Family Parish. The three vice presidents, all from St. Hilary, are Alexis Smith, Evelyn Thoman and Josh Bisesi.


Girls soccer wins district championship The girls soccer team won its sixth straight district title by defeating Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy by a score of 3-2 on Oct. 27. The girls season ended in the regional semifinal game when they were defeated by Chagrin Falls. Their final record was 8-8-3.

Hoban football team wins regional championship, heads to state semifinals The Knights defeated New Philadelphia 34-3 at Northwest High School on Nov. 19 to win the Division III, Region 9 championship on a cold, snowy night. Hoban graduate ordained transitional deacon Matthew Jordan, a 2008 Hoban graduate and St. Francis de Sales parishioner, was ordained as a transitional deacon on Oct. 22 . The Most Rev. Richard Lennon, bishop of the diocese of Cleveland, presided at the ordination of eight men to the Sacred Order of Deacon in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in downtown Cleveland. The ceremony can be viewed online HERE. Deacon Jordan will be assigned to St. Ambrose Parish until May, when he is scheduled to be ordained to the priesthood.

Hoban takes three NCL championships Three of Hoban’s fall sports teams have won championships in the Blue Division of the North Coast League: the Knights football team, the boys soccer team and the boys cross country team have earned NCL titles for 2016. Six Catholic schools from Northeast Ohio compete in the division. More information on the NCL can be found HERE.


Homecoming King and Queen announced The 2016 Homecoming court was presented at halftime of the football game on  Friday, Oct. 21 . Seniors, Meredith Grenci and Atticus Hughes were named king and queen. For members of this year's court, click HERE.

'I am Hoban' campaign launched This week Hoban launched the I am Hoban marketing campaign, using print ads, billboards and targeted social media efforts, including ads and short videos. We hope to have our stories of student achievement and transformation connect with more families. Hoban is more committed than ever to promoting its long-standing history of excellence anchored in our Holy Cross mission of educating the minds and hearts of young people. Jessica Wong featured in High School Spotlight Senior soccer player Jessica Wong appeared in the Nov. 3 High School Spotlight, a weekly feature of the Beacon Journal and Ohio.com. According to the paper, Wong “scored two goals and had an assist to help Hoban defeat CVCA 3-2 last week in overtime in a Division II district final at Highland. Wong’s second goal was the match-winner and propelled the Knights to a regional tournament appearance.”

Senior to receive justice award at Bishop Cosgrove dinner Michael English will be honored with a Catholic Commission Youth Justice Award on Dec. 2  at the 38th Annual Bishop William Cosgrove Justice Dinner. English was nominated by Campus Minister Kelsey Sees and will receive the Rose Juriga Memorial Youth Justice Award for his strong commitment to Catholic social teaching and his positive force for promoting change. Seniors recognized for STEM achievements Colin Fricker and Irene Hamlin, shown here with science teacher Randy Solsman, were recognized by the Akron Council of Engineering and Scientific Societies (ACESS) at its 69th Annual Honors and Awards Banquet at Guy's Party Center on Nov. 3. Certificates of achievement were given to the best science and math students in 30 area high schools as part of the mission of ACESS to promote education in science, technology, engineering and math.
