Happy New Year! The Distinguished Alumni and Friends of Hoban Awards Dinner to take place Sunday, March 12, at Firestone Country Club The Distinguished Alumni Award is given every other year to a graduate who has achieved great success in his or her chosen profession, has contributed greatly to the local community or has contributed to the ongoing growth and success of Archbishop Hoban High School. SADD donates to Robinson Learning Center and Christ Child Foundation Students Against Destructive Decisions collected over 150 pairs of mittens, hats, gloves and scarves to donate to the children at Robinson Learning Center. SADD is also donating $450 to the Christ Child Foundation. The Christ Child Foundation provides uniforms to Akron Public School children who cannot afford them. These donations are proceeds from the mitten drive fundraiser held before Christmas. 

2017 Reverse Raffle is Feb. 25 Guy's Party Centre, 500 E. Waterloo Rd., Akron Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017 Open bar: 6:30 p.m. Dinner buffet: 7:30 p.m. Raffle: 8:30 p.m. $5,000 main prize. Donation: $150 for two. Only 200 tickets sold.

Mark your calendars for Extravaganza April 29, 2017 Please consider donating an item to the Extravaganza, which will be held on April 29, 2017, at the school. The proceeds from Extravaganza 2017 will help fund the Innovation Center, which will include a Makerspace and Distance Learning Studio. Previous Extravaganza funding has helped pay for the remodeled Holy Cross Room, additional science labs and other facility improvements. For complete Extravaganza information, click HERE.

Extravaganza Wish List Advertising and Sponsorship Form Volunteer Form Donor Form Academic Challenge teams to participate in tournaments Both of Hoban's Academic Challenge squads will compete in an all-day tournament of 30 teams on Feb. 6 at Kent State University. The varsity team has already qualified for regionals in Ohio Academic Challenge on May 6, hosted by Cloverleaf High School. Academic Challenge is coached by faculty members Jennifer Spontarelli, Ben Rossi and Judy Mohan. Fifty alumni participate in Basket Shootout  The inaugural Alumni Basket Shootout took place over the holidays. Having nearly 50 alumni take part, the event filled to its maximum number of participants. The event was to benefit both the Grimaldi and Stetz Scholarships. Coming out on top after pool play and a bracketed tournament, was the team of Mitchell Kolesar '07, Anthony Pelini '05, Jack Pelini '07, Nick Pelini '11, Tom Pelini '18, Pepper Sokol '09, and Brian Reilly '05. With plans to use both gyms in 2017, the event will


be able to double in size of participants.

Ancient history students visit Cleveland Museum of Art Students in the Mysteries of the Ancient World class finished their study by examining art, artifacts and architecture of Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, China and the Aztec and Mayan civilizations at the Cleveland Museum of Art. They worked together to analyze different museum colections, as well as completing a scavenger

 

 


hunt. The groups had two and a half hours to explore the museum, and the first team to complete its work won the competition. It was a cold, snowy day outside, but a perfect day to explore the collection inside.

Art students take 43 awards in Scholastic Art Contest Twenty-nine Hoban students received a total of 43 awards in the annual Scholastic Art & Writing Contest. Hoban visual art teachers submitted 160 student works to the competition. The Scholastic is a highly respected regional and national art contest for students in grades 612. Thousands of entries are submitted each year, and typically less than 25 percent receive awards. A total of 473 Silver and Gold Keys were given of the 4,319 total submissions to the Northeast Central Ohio competition. Hoban was awarded six Silver and Gold Keys.

Beacon Journal shines spotlight on Collen Gurley Junior basketball player Collen Gurley was featured in the Beacon Journal and on Ohio.com  in its weekly High School Spotlight Dec. 23. According to the paper, Gurley "helped Hoban win four games in a row after a loss to Columbus St. Charles Prep. He scored 22 points in the loss, then followed that with 16 points in a victory over GlenOak, 14 points in a triumph over Nordonia, 22 points


in a win over Cleveland Benedictine and 14 points in a victory over Massillon. Gurley has made 15 shots from beyond the three-point arc this season."

Cajka '04 to discuss 'Conscience,' the topic of his doctoral dissertation Dr. Peter S. Cajka, a 2004 Hoban graduate who recently earned his doctorate in History from Boston College, will speak on “Conscience” and answer questions. The presentation will be on Thursday, Jan. 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the lower church hall below Holy Family Church in Stow. “Today, Catholics mention the idea of conscience frequently in political discussions,” Cajka said. “This presentation explores how conscience came to occupy this important place in Catholic social teaching.”

Chessar reaches 1,000-point mark Senior basketball player Rachel Chessar reached the 1,000-point mark for her career during Monday's game against Holy Name. Hoban won the home game 59-52. Chessar becomes the fifth player in Hoban girls basketball history to reach this mark.


Freshman to play male lead in production of 'Anne Frank' Freshman Giovanni Palermo is going to have the male lead in the Magical Theatre Company's production of The Diary of Anne Frank. The memoirs of this sparkling and straightforward Jewish girl, forced to hide for two years to escape Nazi persecution, are an essential part of why we need to remember one of the darkest periods of our human history. The production will play at the end of this month and early February. Magical Theatre Company in Barberton is Northeast Ohio's only professional resident and touring theatre for young audiences.

MaxPreps names two Hoban players to AllAmerican teams Two Knights football players were named to the 2016 MaxPreps All-American football teams. Offensive lineman Nolan Rumler made first team offense on the AllAmerican Sophomore Team, and tight end Caden Clark made first team offense on the All-American Freshman Team.


NHSSCA names Winkler state director Hoban's Mike Winkler has been named the Ohio State Director of the National High School Strength Coaches Association. The NHSSCA's mission is to educate, equip and empower coaches to make a positive impact in the lives of student athletes across the nation. "I am extremely proud to have this opportunity to lead our state and to be a positive influence on the strength and conditioning profession at the high school level," Winkler said. Recent grads return to advise seniors on college transition Seniors had a chance to learn about the transition to college Jan. 6 in the fourth annual College 101 program, organized by the student services office. This year 21 alumni from the Hoban classes of 2016, 2015 and 2014 participated. About 80 seniors came to the Holy Cross Room during their lunch period for free pizza and pop and the panel discussion.


Sibley helps Team Armour win in All America Game In the 2017 Under Armour All America Football Game Jan. 1, Hoban’s Todd Sibley made his way into the end zone in the first quarter to put Team Armour on the board and tie things up at 7. Team Armour went on to beat Team Highlight 24-21. The game was played at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla., and broadcast on ESPN. It featured the best of the Class of 2017 football prospects.

State football titles to be celebrated on radio broadcast Fox Sports Ohio/WARF 1350 AM will be broadcasting live from Rockne’s on Merriman Road on Wednesday, Jan. 25, to celebrate Hoban’s back-to- back state championships in football. We will be on “The Drive with Joe Dunn and Tom Linder” from 3 to 6 p.m. Both trophies will be there, and Joe and Tom will interview Coach Tim Tyrell and others. People are welcome to stay for dinner at Rockne’s. The Hamad family would appreciate it.


Three 2016 graduates make débuts at Charity Ball Isabella Judge, Caroline Kane and Alexia Markowski, all 2016 Hoban graduates, were among 36 débutantes at the 114th Akron Children’s Hospital Charity Ball Dec. 28. The event is sponsored by the Women’s Board of the hospital and was held at E.J. Thomas Hall. The ball raises funds for various departments at the hospital.

Wrestler Lukus Stricker plans to study at Harvard Lukus Stricker plans to continue his wrestling career at Harvard University while majoring in applied mathematics. A 5-foot-7 senior, Stricker wrestles at 120 pounds this season and is team cocaptain. He holds a 4.01 GPA and scored 33 on the ACT and 1520 on the SAT. He finished 2016 with a 141-18 overall record. He advanced to the Division II state tournament the past two years and placed third last year. As a sophomore and junior, he won individual titles at the North Coast League Blue Division championships and at the OHSAA sectionals and districts.
