THE LINEAR GREEN SYSTEM CAN BE A GREAT OPPORTUNITY OF CONNECTION BEETWEEN TWO DIFFERENT PART OF THE CITY

BUT THE RAILWAY AND THE RIVER SET A STRONG LIMIT

SO THE PROJECT STARTS FROM THE TREATMENT AND THE OVER COMING OF THE LIMIT

TO CREATE DIFFERENT CONNECTED GREEN AND MINERAL PUBLIC SPACES

THE PUBLIC BUILDING EMPHASISES THE KEY ORIENTATION CHOSEN TO CONNECT

THE RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS CONTINUE THE REGULAR DEVELOPMENT OF THE AREA

THE COMPOSITION PROCESS EXPLORES DIFFERENT POSSIBILITIES STARTING FROM THE COMPACT BLOCK TYPOLOGY, DEVELOPING THE BUILDING BY RESPONDING TO FUNCTIONAL, AESTHETIC, OR STRUCTURAL ISSUES AS WELL AS URBAN-SCALE ONES, IN ORDER TO OBTAIN A SYNERGY BETWEEN OPEN SPACE AND INTERIORS AND HIGH QUALITY BUILT ENVIRONMENT FOR OFFICE WORK, CULTURAL ACTIVITIES, AND RETAIL. HOSTEL AND MUSEUM IN ALDO ROSSI-DESIGNED ABANDONED RAILWAY TERMINAL OF S.CRISTOFORO

or Exploiting for Re-Vitalizing_

Academic Year 2010/11_tutor Christian Campanella

THIS WAY A STRONG FORMAL BOND BEETWEEN PLAN (BOTTOM) AND ELEVATION (BELOW) IS CREATED, AS IN THE ORIGINAL PROJECT

ALDO ROSSI DESIGNED RAILWAY TERMINAL, ABANDONED DURING CONSTRUCTION IN 1992, OF S.CRISTOFORO SETS ITSELF AS AN HISTORICAL PRESENCE AT THE HEAD OF THE GREEN SYSTEM, FACING THE RIVER

ONLY THE STRUCTURAL FRAME HAS BEEN COMPLETED, FEW PERSPECTIVE DRAWINGS HAND DOWN THE WILL OF THE DESIGNER THE MUSEAL SPACES ARE AT THE BOTTOM FLOOR, TO HAVE DIRECT ACCESS TO THE PARK. THE HOSTEL TAKES PLACE AT THE UPPER FLOOR, WHILE THE VOLUMES ON THE SIDE ARE OCCUPIED BY REHARSING ROOMS AND OTHER SERVICES FOR YOUTH

SOUTH ELEVATION_ RIVERFRONT

THE CHOICE IS TO KEEP AND BRING OUT THE FRAMEWORK AS IT IS, USING NEW MATERIALS TO CREATE DIFFERENT SPACES THAT INTERACT WITH IT

SECOND FLOOR PLAN_ +7.50 m

MUSEUM HOSTEL’S COMMON SPACE DORMS ENSUITE ROOMS POLI-FUNCTIONAL ROOMS

THE CONCEPT FOR THE NEW INTERVENTION IS A CONTINUOUS RIBBON THAT DEFINES THE LIMIT BETWEEN INNER AND OUTER SPACE, BOTH AS VERTICAL OR HORIZONTAL PARTITION (ROOFING)

A NEW STAIRCASE IS ADDED IN THE TRIPLE-HEIGHT VOID. IT ALLOWS DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEW TO THE BUILDING AND THE PARK, AND HAS A LOAD BEARING ROLE FOR THE ADDED MEZZANINE

MOST OF THE FUNCTIONS LEAN TO THE PERIMETRAL WALL, TO MAXIMIZE THE YARD SPACE, ALLOW CONTROL AND REDUCE THE CONSTRUCTION COSTS

A SIMPLE STRUCTURAL GRID DEFINES THE SHADE SPACE, IN WHICH THE CLASSROOMS ARE INSERTED [1st PHASE OF CONSTRUCTION]

THE ROTATION OF THE GRID COMPLETES THE BUILDING REGULATING THE ACCESSES AND PROVIDING SAME DIMENSION AND SHADING TO ALL THE CLASSROOMS, CREATING A CLEAR DIVISION OF THE OPEN SPACE, FEATURING AN INTERNAL YARD FOR OPEN-AIR LESSONS AND A SOCIAL SPACE FOR SERVICES, WHERE THE WELL IS LOCATED

THE INDEPENDENT STRUCTURE FRAME ALLOWS TO BUILD THE WALL WITH SELFCONSTRUCTION TECNIQUES, USING SUN-DRIED BRICKS MADE OF GRAVEL AND SCRAPE MATERIAL. A PATTERN IS REPEATED TO REGULATE THE OPENINGS

THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY BUILDING, WITHOUT IMPRESSIVE ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES, HAD LACK OF LIGHT AND A CONFUSED AND UNPROFICIENT INTERNAL PARTITION. THE BRIEF REQUIRED A WORKING SPACE, A RETAIL SPACE WITH A PLAYING ROOM AND A SMALL ACCOMODATION

THE FIRST FLOOR IS REPLACED BY A PLYWOOD BOXBEAM INSERTED IN THE BUILDING, LEANING ON THE EXISTING WALLS AND “SUSPENDED”OVER THE WORKING SPACE. OTHER PLAIN VOLUMES ALLOW THE DISTRIBUTION IN THE BUILDING

IRREGULAR VOLUMES ARE INSTEAD USED TO BRING THE LIGHT IN THE NEW FLOOR, CREATING DIFFERENT EFFECTS [a]. A NEW INSULATION LAYER IS PROVIDED, THE ROOF IS REPLACED AND THE SHORT SIDES OF THE BUILDING ARE OPENED TO MAXIMIZE THE LIGHT AND ENPHATIZE THE SUSPENDED NATURE OF THE WOODEN PART [b]

THE COMPETITION BRIEF REQUIRED TO RIVITALIZE DIFFERENT FREE AREAS LOCATED IN AN INDUSTRIAL CONTEXT, FACING THE RIVER AND CONNECTED BY A NEW LIGHT RAILWAY THE “THERMOGRAPHIC READING” IS THE TOOL CHOSEN TO UNDERSTAND WHAT EACH AREA NEEDS. HOT SPOTS REPRESENT PLACES AND ACTIVITIES THAT ATTRACT PEOPLE, COLD SPOTS ARE LOW QUALITY SPACES, NOT USED BY PEOPLE HOT SPOTS

COLD SPOTS

ASSOCIATING DIFFERENT MATERIALS AND SHAPES TO THE DIFFERENT GRADE OF “INTENSITY” EACH AREA NEEDS, IT IS POSSIBLE TO CREATE A COHERENT STRATEGY INVOLVING ALL THE FRAGMENTARY AREA IN THE NEW SYSTEM

USING THIS SCHEME AND READING THE SURROUNDINGS, AN INTERVENTION IS PURPOSED FOR EACH AREA, AND IT IS OPEN TO DIFFERENT INTERPRETATIONS AT ARCHITECTURAL SCALE
