Le Perthus Tunnel, France – Spain The Le Perthus crossborder Tunnel under the Pyrenees Mountains is part of the high-speed rail link between Perpignan in southern France and Barcelona, Spain. Two tunnels, each 10 meter in diameter and 8.9 kilometer long, have been constructed using the world’s most sophisticated hard rock TBMs capable of operating in open-face and sealed mode to accommodate varying ground conditions. ARCADIS provided geotechnical engineering, design and construction supervision services for the project.
Metrotunnel Santiago de Chile With more than 2 million passengers per day, the metro infrastructure in Santiago, Chile, is already one of the largest in South America and expanding rapidly. Currently two new lines are under construction — Line 6 and Line 3 — that will increase network capacity by 30 percent. ARCADIS is working as part of a consortium to provide engineering consultancy on both lines, and is also responsible for supervising construction on Line 3. Tunnel design represents a particular challenge on both lines as they will intersect several existing lines and operational stations. ARCADIS is working with experts in tunnel design to overcome this issue. As a result of these projects, ARCADIS is recognized by Metro de Santiago as a leading service provider in this field.
EOLE – East-West rail line extension, Paris, France EOLE is the last section of the Regional Bypass Network project that links Paris’s east and west suburbs with mile-long connecting tunnels and two large subway stations (Haussmann-St. Lazare and Magenta). Beside 7.30 meter diameter twin-bored tunnels, excavated in soft rock and soil, the project notably included two 53 meter large and 13 meter high station cavern under the densely built central Paris business district, excavated in multiple stages and using an active vault for the largest span of Magenta Station. ARCADIS provided project management assistance, geotechnical evaluation, detailed design, and construction phase services for this $1.4-billion project.
East Side Access Grand Central Station, New York, USA The East Side Access project will connect the Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) Main and Port Washington lines in Queens to a new LIRR terminal beneath Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The new connection will increase the LIRR’s capacity into Manhattan, and dramatically shorten travel time for Long Island and eastern Queens commuters traveling to the east side of Manhattan. ARCADIS is providing construction management services as a member of the construction management team for the entire East Side Access program, including tunnels and caverns, stations and systems.
Tunnel A2 Maastricht, The Netherlands The A2/E25 motorway passes through the city of Maastricht. The Municipality of Maastricht and the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management have expressed a need for an improvement of the accessibility to Maastricht and traffic flow conditions on the A2/E25 motorway. Construction joint venture Avenue2 v.o.f. with ARCADIS as designer has developed a bi-level tunnel concept that will improve the local situation and create opportunities for redevelopment of the current E25 corridor. The tunnel is expected to open in 2016. ARCADIS provides EIS, safety, design and geotechnical/hydraulical engineering services to Avenue2 JV.
Second Coentunnel, Amsterdam, The Netherlands The Coentunnel capacity extension project includes construction of the second tunnel, renovation of the existing Coentunnel, as well as changes to sections of the connecting A8 and A10 motorways in Amsterdam. The design, construction, maintenance and financing is part of a 30 year public tender under a DBFM contract (Design, Build, Finance, Maintenance). ARCADIS is a shareholder in the general contractor, Coentunnel Company BV. Payment to the contractor will be made by the customer, the Department of Public Works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat), using availability fees. The Second Coentunnel is built as an immersed tube tunnel with a length of approx. 720 meter.
