asey Baugh has known about Arcadia Gallery since he was 15 years old. Even then, Baugh had set his sights on the gallery and wanted, one day, to be able to see his work hanging on the gallery walls. This November that dream becomes reality as Baugh will have his first one-man show at the SoHobased gallery. As Baugh is always pushing himself to try something new, approach his paintings in a completely different way, this exhibition is also the beginning of a whole new theme for the artist. “A lot of things happened at once for me,” says Baugh. “I moved to New York, started showing with Arcadia and just took a step back and wanted to re-evaluate what I’m doing. I did some soul-searching and decided to step it up a notch. I went back to my childhood dream of wanting to be an electrical engineer and then looked toward that area for ideas for this new work.” What Baugh has always been fascinated with is the accoutrements that come with the profession: wires, lights, neon, chords, computers, etc. They are a source of endless fascination for him visually and intellectually. “I’m not using these things just for the sake of doing it,” says Baugh. “I want these paintings to say something, comment on the world we are living in. We live in a society obsessed and consumed by social media and technology and it is such a relevant topic today. It’s easy to get trapped and engulfed in all of this. Sometimes it is bad, sometimes good, but I’m not trying to make definitive statements about it. Sometimes it enlightens us while other times it bogs us down.” Baugh also is enjoying setting up these paintings in his studio and contrasting the organic and natural form of the figure with the symmetrical man-made design of these technological elements. “I’ve been painting for 10 years and right now I feel like I’m starting all over again with a whole new set of materials, problems and challenges,” says Baugh. “I feel like this is what I should’ve been doing from the beginning. Each painting is a whole
