September 2010 National Night Out Turn Out Our thanks to the large number of Arbor Greene residents who participated in Arbor Greene’s first National Night Out – a night out against crime. We were fortunate to have multiple professional, friendly, and informative Tampa Police Officers who attended our event. The Tampa Police Department’s (TPD) equine unit’s two horses and riders did an excellent exhibition of their and the horses’ skills. These horses are so well trained that they are used for search and rescues, parades, and in Ybor City at closing time. A canine officer was very informative regarding his and his dog’s training and duties. This police dog is trained in search and rescue, and detection of narcotics and explosives. Two Rapid Offender Control Squads officers explained their duties and answered the residents’ questions. A motorcycle officer gave a very nice presentation and provided backpacks with various goodies. Two TPD’s crisis/hostage unit members gave a briefing and tour of their mobile command center vehicle. Last but not least, our senior Neighborhood Watch Association representative and TPD District-2 leadership made crime prevention presentations. Congratulations to the raffle winners of several security items. Thanks also to the Arbor Greene Clubhouse staff who helped prepare for this event, which was a great success.

The Arbor Greene HOA urges all homeowners to be responsible and take care of issues around the home in order to avoid receiving a violation notice. - If you do receive a violation notice, the best thing is to correct the violation right away. - If immediately correcting the violation is not possible, notify Ameri-Tech and give them an estimated date of completion (especially if the work requires hiring a landscaper or contractor). - If the HOA does not see compliance or hear from a homeowner within the given timeframe, we have to continue to spend money sending violation notices which may result in higher HOA fees. - Ultimately, if the HOA has to refer the matter to the Violations Committee for fining, take legal action or abate the situation, this can be very costly to the home owner (who is responsible for these fines/fees). So far this year, approximately 970 violation letters have been sent to homeowners. That is nearly 140 per month. Please do your part to keep our HOA fees down. In order to avoid receiving a violation notice, here is a checklist of items for each homeowner to evaluate on their property. - Is the lawn mowed, edged, weeded, and/or are there any dead areas that need to be re-sodded? - Are bushes trimmed? - Are there weeds in the landscape beds? - Does mulch need to be added (note: only pine bark mulch is allowed)? - Does the house need painting? - Is the mailbox painted, clean, and is the post in good shape? - Do trees need trimming? - Are driveways/sidewalks and roofs clean or do they need power washing? - Are hoses/trash containers concealed from view? - Are cars blocking the sidewalks at end of driveway? If you have any questions or concerns about HOA issues, please contact Jeff Couturier, Ameri-Tech Property Management at 813-968-8008 ext: 102, or email: jeff.c@ameri-tech.info

Labor Day The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City. In the aftermath of the deaths of a number of workers during the 1894 Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with Labor as a top political priority. Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer. The holiday is often regarded as a day of rest and parades. Forms of celebration include picnics, barbecues, fireworks displays, water sports, and public art events. Families with school-age children take it as the last chance to travel before the end of the summer recess. Similarly, some teenagers and young adults view it as the last weekend for parties before returning to school. However, start dates for schools vary widely. In U.S. sports, Labor Day marks the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons. NCAA teams usually play their first games the week before Labor Day, with the NFL traditionally playing their first game the Thursday following Labor Day. *www.wikipedia.com Do you remember the rule about not wearing white shoes after Labor Day? Then the rule grew into not wearing any white at all and that became the new custom. There are so many silly reasons why not to wear white, but the only one that makes some sense is due to temperature. The color white reflects light and heat, so by wearing white in the winter would make you cooler, and I don’t know anyone who would want to be cooler in the winter!! The Arbor Greene Administration will be closed on September 6th, but the Club will be opened from 8AM8PM.

Great Tax-Deductible Employee Benefit Which Can be Limited to One or More Executives and their Spouses The government is expecting crushing long-term care costs, so it has created a tremendous incentive for business owners to buy LTC insurance (LTCi). Often, the LTCi premiums are entirely deductible to the business with no taxation to the executive, neither when the premium is paid, nor when benefits are received. Learn more today! Ask for a complimentary proposal for your business. Remember, the earlier you buy LTCi, the less it costs and the more benefits you secure. The Gate House Number Change The Arbor Greene CDD Gate House phone number will change and will no longer be available to callers effective October 1st. The guards’ functions are to greet and account for visitors entering the community. With an average of over 800 visitors per day entering the community, answering the telephone from callers with questions not related to their primary duties is disruptive and slows the processing of visitors into the community. Residents expecting visitors or guests between 10PM and 6AM should provide a written list to the guards containing the names of their guests and their expected arrival time. The list may be delivered to the guards at the gate house or submitted on-line using the CDD Online Contact Request Form and “select” Contact CDD on the Arbor Greene website at www.ArborGreene.org. The guest information is required if the resident does not want to receive a call from the guards to obtain permission for the guests to enter the community during the hours above. The online form must be submitted prior to 3:30PM on the day of and prior to the arrival of their guests.

A Message from the Neighborhood Watch Directors It’s that time of year for some of us to be doing back-to-school shopping. Here are some tips which will hopefully keep you safer while you are buying back to school items. + Most importantly, BE AWARE! Be aware of your surroundings at all times, including who is nearby. Consider going shopping with a friend rather than going shopping by yourself. + Before you leave the house, carry only the items that you need, including your cell phone. Don’t take too many credit cards, just the ones you will need. Take only the cash that you need. If you need to get cash from an ATM, use one in a very public place, preferably indoors. + Avoid using a purse if possible. Consider a fanny pack or carrying your wallet in your front pants pocket or inside jacket pocket. + While shopping, pay attention where you park so you can quickly return to your car. Park as close as you can to where you are going and in a well-lit area. Stay away from bushes and places where someone could hide and surprise you when you are getting in or out of your car. + Pay attention to your surroundings. If there is someone hanging around the parking lot, park somewhere else. If you see suspicious activity when returning to your car, return to the relative safety of the store(s) and notify security or the police. + Don’t try to carry more than you can handle. Don’t shop until you are worn out. Don’t let your cell phone or texting distract you. All these things make it harder for you to be aware of your surroundings and makes you an easier target. + If you are purchasing expensive electronic items, consider buying them at the last store you visit, so you can take those purchases home immediately and not leave them exposed in the vehicle for too long. Be conscious of person(s) near you who might follow you out to your car after you buy a computer, cell phone, camera, etc. + When you get ready to leave the store, don’t wait until closing time to leave, especially if it will be dark outside when you go home or go to another store. If you are traveling from one shopping location to another, keep your purchases in your trunk. Covering purchases with a blanket or similar item on the back seat is unlikely to fool a thief. If you would like to receive Tampa Police Department reports and additional security tips, please e-mail us at ArborGreeneNWA@hotmail.com to be added to the e-mail distribution. Joining this e-mail group does not obligate you to any other NWA activities, but should help you and your family to become better informed and more secure. If you would like to become an active Neighborhood Watch Patrol Member, call Paul or Hally at 453-7295 for details.

Continued from pg 6 If the form is not received prior to the arrival of the guest(s) and the guest(s) arrive between the 10PM and 6AM, and provides the guard with the resident’s telephone number, the residents will be called to obtain permission from the resident for the guest(s) to enter the community. If the guest(s) does not have the resident’s telephone number, or has an incorrect number, or the resident does not answer the call, the visitor will be denied entry into the community. Residents will not be notified of guest(s) entering the community between 6AM and 10PM. Residents with an emergency should call 911. If you see suspicious activity in the community or to report a non-life threatening crime, please call the Tampa Police non-emergency number 231-6130. Community Fountain Repairs The Community fountain, at the Enclave/Estuary Village entrances, was turned off in 2006 due to the City of Tampa water restrictions, effective May 4, 2006, that stated “Outdoor aesthetic uses of water such as decorative water fountains and features are prohibited unless the fountain is re-circulating and provides a necessary water quality benefit or uses reclaimed water.” The "water quality benefit" did not apply to the Community fountain but did apply to our entry fountain, and that is why we have continued to use the front fountain within the hours permitted. During the period of inactivity, we continued to periodically "test" the fountain until we incurred leaks in the fountain liner. The liner had been replaced several years prior to the fountain being turned off in 2006. At the July 19th CDD Meeting, the CDD Board approved work to be done on repairing the aesthetically pleasing fountain. Work was scheduled to begin in August pending work permit approval by the City of Tampa and is estimated to be completed within several weeks. There is a lot of work to be done, including removing the old liner, checking the electrical bonding, applying the new Marquis finish, testing the pump and motor operation and finally filling the fountain with water and testing the variable frequency device computer that regulates the height of the water during high winds. There also will be many maintenance checks along the way. As of July 1, 2010, the City of Tampa approved new water restrictions for our area, and now provides that “fountains, waterfalls and other outdoor artistic water features are allowed to operate on an as-needed basis, during any day or time, as long as water is used efficiently.” When completed and operational, entry to and around the fountain circle is prohibited. Parents please advise your child(ren) that entry in the fountain, wading or swimming in the fountain pool is unsafe and not permitted. ARBOR GREENE GAZETTE ● SEPTEMBER 2010
