GOING FOR THE GOLD THE 2019 EGYPTIAN EVENT

AUGUST 28-31, 2019 KENTUCKY HORSE PARK, LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY USA

T

his year’s Egyptian Event was special in many ways. Most importantly, The Pyramid Society was turning fifty and there was much to celebrate. To get everyone in the mood the Show Commission did a spectacular job of decorating the arena, with lovely gold bunting in the seating area, and a stunning Egyptian backdrop replete with palms. The theme continued with gold and black throughout the concourse and there was a special area for guests to sit and reminisce, with two television screens showing historic images and videos. Then, throughout the arena were areas of homage to our founders, members, horses, activities and much more. To stroll along the concourse at this year’s Event truly was a walk down memory lane. While there were fewer entries in the competition this year, the quality was high and there were many lovely horses for all to admire. There was even a special class called “50 for 50” for handlers as old (or older) than the Society! Throughout the show there were smiles and congratulations all around the arena for the winners, with victories shared by both small breeders and long-established farms. Education is always a hallmark of the Event, and this year was no exception. Spectators gathered 24 < P Y R A M I D 2 0 1 9 - 2 0 2 0 Y E A R B O O K · W O R L D

to watch two lovely Egyptian geldings go from kindergarten to graduation in a wonderful four-day seminar by Andres Castaño and Patrick Sullivan. Joe Ferriss gave an informative lecture on the history of the Society and was joined by an illustrious panel of breeders – Judith Forbis, Janice Bush and Jody Cruz – for a thought-provoking discussion. The Silent Auction this year represented an opening of the Society’s treasure troves, with lots of wonderful memorabilia relating to the Egyptian Arabian, while the Premier auction held during Friday night’s Golden Anniversary celebration was just as historic, including a breeding to the immortal Ruminaja Ali, along with two exquisite pieces of art in honor of the Society’s long dedication to artists. There just seemed to be a special magic in Kentucky this year with so many attendees commenting on the great time they had visiting with others, making new friends, and just coming together to reminisce. The special celebration on Friday night was a grand success – beautiful ballroom, beautiful people, generous sponsors, and happy bidders. Then there was the dancing… Saturday night was also full of excitement as everyone

cheered on their favorites, interspersed with honoring our sponsors, and special awards such as Volunteer of the Year, and Handler of Excellence and winners for the Youth Art Contest. While one brief storm darkened the horizon, it was quickly gone, and no one was missing the heat and humidity that was often felt during our previous show dates in June. Instead, a celebratory atmosphere was enjoyed by all.

The new KA Damascus bronze by Karen Kasper was unveiled at the Kehilan-Azizah Arabians booth.

STRAIGHT EGYPTIAN MARES Gold Champion Straight Egyptian Mare, Most Classic Head and Egyptian Event Highest Honors Breeders’ Award, Female, HC ABLA EL SAGHIRA (Ali Reshan x Ravenwood Sensation), owned by Deborah or Lindsey Hurdle, New Caney, Texas. Deborah Hurdle’s Heritage C breeding program near Dallas, Texas, was founded in 1980 on Blunt Egyptians and early EAO lines. Before long she decided concentrate on straight Egyptians. Judging by this year’s Gold Champion Mare, HC Abla El Saghira, that was a good move. She is a gorgeous mare. “I’ve only bought three Straight Egyptian mares in my life. It was always a nationwide search, and it has been my preference to purchase from established farms. I found Saghira’s dam, Ravenwood Sensation (Ravenwood Majesty x Ravenwood Cody) at Ravenwood Ranch in Montana. They’ve probably been around for 50 years. I was interested in Sensation because she had two crosses to the *Ansata Ibn Halima son El Hadiyi (x *Sammara by *Morafic). She is so full of charisma – she snorts and blows and holds that tail straight up and flags it, and she moves like thunder. Sensation has been a phenomenal mare for us and we treasure her. She is fabulous, a once in a lifetime mare, so trustworthy, and so full of the spirit. And just a great mom – she will even adopt foals. She had a baby this year and she is so happy. MIDDLE: Silver Champion Straight Egyptian Mare TF NEERAPTURE (Botswana x Neera SA), owned by Allison G. Mehta, Atlanta, Georgia. RIGHT: Bronze Champion Straight Egyptian Mare BARMYRE AZEEZAH (ESA Adlai x ESA Malaaka), owned by Brad Mouw, Leota, Minnesota.

“As pretty as her daughter Saghira is, she has a character to die for. She loves her people, she wants attention, and she gives it right back to you. Anything you ask she’s going to try to do. That is her nature. In the ring with Sandro Pinha, she got out there and just gave and gave for him.” Saghira has produced three foals for Deborah – a filly and a colt by Tamer al Khalidayah, and a filly this year by Ansata Royal Qasim (Ansata Qasim x Sharifa Tamria). “She’s got her momma’s sweet disposition also. We sold the first filly to Qatar, but we’re keeping this one,” says Deborah. “Next, I plan to break Saghira to ride. “People all over the world have tried to purchase her. And the answer is always ‘no.’ I do have some very high quality horses that are for sale, but Saghira is not one of them. There is no amount of money that can replace the joy that she brings to me.”

THE 50 TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION GALA A NIGHT OF GOLDEN CELEBRATION

Thanks to our gracious 50th Anniversary Sponsors, Bait Al Arab, Kuwait State Stud, this year’s gala was a true celebration. The ballroom at the Embassy Suites hotel in Lexington was artfully arranged with a variety of golden-themed seating options designed to encourage mingling. After all, there were fifty years of stories to tell, horses to remember, and favorite moments to share. Cooked-to-order food stations, including seafood and steak, meant that the participants could graze throughout the evening. To allow more time for socializing, the evening’s presentations were divided into several parts. They included a welcome by President Rogers, a presentation by our Celebration Sponsors, Bait Al Arab, Kuwait State Stud, regarding their new book about historic breeder Abbas Pasha, which was graciously presented to the premier sponsors at this year’s Event, and the Trustees Award for Christie Metz and Henry Metz. A lively auction of three incredible offerings, including a breeding to the legendary Ruminaja Ali donated by Bergren Family Arabians, was also conducted. As a fitting conclusion to the Celebration the lights dimmed and a nostalgic film honoring the Society 50th anniversary, generously sponsored by Kuwaiti Straight Egyptian breeders, was shown for all to enjoy. DANCING THE NIGHT AWAY Thanks to a gracious sponsorship from Two Silos Farm and Patrick Sullivan, the dancing began just after the official 50th Celebration dinner ended. And what dancing it was! The band, aptly named “The Sensations” was sensational indeed. This group of talented and engaging musicians tempted dancers of all ages to show off their moves until the clock struck midnight. It was a fabulous end to a fabulous evening, and more than one guest was heard to say “best gala ever!”
