If SF Aftershoc were a racehorse, no bookie would touch him because he would likely put them out of business. He’s way too close to being a sure thing in his chosen field, which now is as a sire of English Pleasure horses. (With U.S. National Reserve Championships in English Pleasure Open and Junior Horse on his record, and an AEPA Saddle Seat Futurity Championship, he has been pretty successful in competition as well.) This year’s breeding season alone will double the number of his foals registered now. The promise of his pedigree, combined with what his youngsters are showing their trainers—and what some are doing in the show ring—indicates that he is set to make an important contribution to breed.
“I bought Aftershoc as an amateur English horse for myself,” observes owner Lee Ann (“L.A.”) Flynn, and adds candidly, “but he rapidly became a big deal [for his potential as a sire] because his first babies were all National Champions. It wasn’t my plan to have a stallion like this, but it’s an incredible blessing.” So, why is he such a hot prospect? Here are the basics. Pedigree (SF Specs Shocwave x SF Sweet Elegance, by Promotion). SF Aftershoc’s family tree is so full of English talent that it is practically gilt-edged. In the first five generations, he offers six crosses to *Bask through a variety of bloodlines. Of note is that a high percentage of the horses are U.S. and/or Canadian National Champions or Reserves (some several times), such as the last five stallions in his sire line—from Specs Shocwave all the way back to Bay-Abi—and Barbary, Promotion, and Cognac are there too. Nearly all were in an English discipline, and many scored in Halter as well. Several have sired or produced National Champions in the English division. That is all reflected in Aftershoc. “What’s interesting about him is that he is siring a lot of English horses,” says trainer Vicki Humphrey. “That’s usually the exception to the rule. I think it’s because of his pedigree; all those *Bask horses are English or park horses.” Importantly for serious breeders, at just about every level of SF Aftershoc’s pedigree are well known, consistently proven broodmares, including U.S. National Champions *Gdynia, *Prowizja and Spectra PR, as well as *Bachantka, Balalajka, Balalinka, *Naganka and more.

What He Breeds On. Not just ability, but personality and trainability. “He is a real people horse,” Humphrey says. “He’s in your pocket all the time and so are his babies from the day they’re born. I attribute the trainability to the two crosses to Promotion. His foals are like riding the *Bask horses. They’re real bright and game, and they go to the bridle easily, but you don’t have to longe them. You just get them out and get on them.” Progeny. As of August 1, 2015, SF Aftershoc has sired 42 registered foals. The three Half-Arabians in his first foal crop, now 5 years old, have debuted in the English division, and so far, he has a nearly 100 percent strike rate. Davinci Reflection WA was U.S. National Champion in the 2013 Half-Arabian English Pleasure Futurity (finishing just ahead of the Aftershoc filly SHF Culture Shoc, who was reserve) and the 2014 AEPA Halcon Furniture HalfArabian $50,000 English Pleasure Futurity. In 2013, Captivating Shoc WA was U.S. National Champion in the Half-Arabian Country English Pleasure Futurity.
And finally, there is SF Aftershoc himself. L.A. Flynn adores him—and she knows her horses. An Army brat, Flynn moved 19 times before she graduated from high school, selling one horse and buying another with each move, accruing experience in an array of disciplines. Her first exposure to Arabians came when she was 12. “I always really liked them,” she says. “They have more of a ‘people personality.’ My involvement just went from there.” She has been with Vicki Humphrey Training Center, where she keeps her show horses, for 14 years. Her home is nearby, a farm of Tara-like beauty where she keeps her broodmares and foals (at last count, three mares, two yearlings and two weanlings, with more on the way).
In addition to enjoying Aftershoc’s company, she loves how special he is. “My current best memory with him is from when we brought him to the farm to do the photo shoot for this article,” she says. “They worked for an hour and a half, and he was totally ‘on’ the whole time. Most horses aren’t nearly that dynamic for that long a time.” Humphrey, too, was impressed with him at the shoot. “We hadn’t ridden him for two years,” she said, “but Howie wanted to shoot him under saddle. So, we got him out, threw a bridle on him and went. He wore his bridle like he’d been schooling all year—he could have gone through the gate at U.S. Everything comes so naturally to him and his foals. It makes our job so much easier and enjoyable.”

VHTC has seen rapid expansion this year of their business footprint both figuratively and literally. A new training barn with an additional 50 stalls and a new 90 x 200 arena has given much needed space to the training division.
