Parents, Alumni and Friends School year 2015-2016 was an exciting year at Aquinas. Our Anniversary year was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate all the success Aquinas has had over these past 60 years. We hope you were able to join us for many of these celebrations. In addition to the Anniversary celebrations Aquinas had many positive things happening. Our accreditation visit went well and we received a full six-year clear term of accreditation. We were honored as the Best Private School for the fifth time in a row. Apple Computer named Aquinas an Apple Distinguished School. A senior, Caroline Brown, was named a National Merit Scholar, one of the few in our region. All this in addition to the Anniversary! We were also blessed to receive two major grants which supported an Anniversary Building Project. Because of the generosity of the Shea Family Charities and San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, Aquinas will be able to build a performing arts center. Without these two generous organizations, we would have never been able to do this. Although there are still funds that need to be raised we are most appreciative of their support. Enrollment has stayed strong. We are fortunate to have some of the finest students in the area form our student body. Many can afford the modest Aquinas tuition but just as many struggle to be able to keep enrolled. We sincerely thank all of you who have contributed to help these students. Please know that your help is most appreciated. We hope we can count on you for your continued support. We are very proud of our students both present and past. We want to keep the “Aquinas Experience” current and accessible to all those who desire a Catholic high school education. We want to keep you involved so please come to the planned events or just come by for a tour. We would love to see you and share our story because it is a success story and you are part of it. Thank you for all you have done to support Aquinas and its students. My prayers and best wishes,

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN PROJECT

FINANCIAL REPORT 2015-2016 2015-2016 was Aquinas’ 60th anniversary. It was a wonderful year despite the many typical financial challenges. Celebrations focusing on our rich heritage and successful alumni provided a time of joy and pride in Aquinas and its students both present and past.

Progress continued on the Beyond 60 capital campaign project. Last fiscal year, a 10 million dollar project was proposed by Shea Family Charities, in which they would cover 80% of the costs and Aquinas would need to meet the remaining 20%. In fall of 2015, the first phase of the campaign was completed with the gym renovation which included: 1) New Varsity and JV football locker rooms, 2) new team room and training room including all new showers; 3) new basketball and volleyball locker rooms as well as new visitor locker rooms; 4) all new gym flooring, new air conditioning, lighting and ceiling. The newly named Aquinas-Gogo Gymnasium was unveiled on October 20th, 2015. A Ground breaking was held in February for the San Manuel Performing Arts building and Phase II began with construction on both the performing arts building and the lobby for the gymnasium.

The current economy is challenging many communities, and our city of San Bernardino, which is home to Aquinas High School’s 30-acre campus, is no exception. Recent Census Bureau statistics placed San Bernardino as the second most impoverished city in the country. As usual parents worked diligently to meet their financial obligation in order to have their child experience the Aquinas education. Over 52% of the students qualified for and received financial assistance which amounted to over $600,000. This is an overwhelming amount but one that is so important to the many students who so deserve this assistance. As all schools were challenged by the Bishop during Catholic Schools Week, Aquinas works diligently to keep the school accessible and affordable to those who desire a Catholic education. Because of major grants from The Shea Family Charities and San Manuel Band of Missions Indians, a supportive grant from the Hannon Foundation, and the generosity of alumni and friends of Aquinas, the Anniversary Building Project moved forward with great excitement. The renovation of the interior of the gym was completed and now the building of the new Performing Arts Center is well under way. This a source of excitement for the students, parents and faculty. To have such great facilities available is so important to all these groups. While we are most grateful to be the recipient of these funds to enhance and upgrade our facilities, the fact still remains that there is significant and ongoing need to seek funds to supplement our operating budget. The financial aid need is real. You will notice that there is a considerable difference between our income and expenses on the following pages. This is due to standardized accounting practices utilized by the diocese. What looks to be an excess is merely a documentation of building project funds that have been received.

2+million dollars in donations and grants for the Capital Campaign in 2015-2016

Many students of Aquinas need your support. As alumni and friends of Aquinas you realize how much an Aquinas education can benefit a student. Please consider supporting these great kids and keeping their dream of attaining an Aquinas diploma alive! Thank you for your support over the years. You are part of what makes Aquinas great.

A Special Thank You to San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and Shea Family Charities for their support
