IN BRIEF SUPPORT FOR SWIMMING IN FOLKESTONE A £2.4m grant which will enable the reopening of swimming facilities at Folkestone Sports Centre has been supported. Cabinet members have endorsed The Sports Trust’s scheme to revitalise the Radnor Park Avenue site – agreeing to fund essential work including pool and changing room renovation, the addition of solar panels and repairs to the flat roof. It is expected community swimming, and the associated health and social benefits, will return to Folkestone Sports Centre later in the year with this investment. The importance of the pool to residents, schools and clubs has been especially evident since its closure in August 2024. A petition highlighting the need to save it attracted some 9,000 signatures.

HPB’S SUMMER EVENT AT PETERBOROUGH LIDO Plans are coming together for Historic Pools Of Britain’s event to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Peterborough Lido on Tuesday 23 June so be sure to book your place! The event might be based in Peterborough, but with speakers sharing their vast lido experiences, the event will be taking a metaphorical journey around the country. HPB’s speakers will bring their passion and knowledge of lidos to life, set against the backdrop of Peterborough Lido and its Grade II listed beauty, complete with iconic clock tower and sundecks. Attendees will be hearing from Friends of Peterborough Lido, who have curated an exhibition about the venue’s 90th anniversary, and City of Peterborough Swimming Club (COPS), who also mark their 90th anniversary this year. Lunch, refreshments, a tour, and a swim in the summer sunshine (fingers crossed) will complete the day.
