It’s the start of a new year and what a start it’s been! Despite a predictably slow first week back, which was to be expected given the long festive break, it seems like across the industry, it’s been nonstop since – and that’s despite the fairly horrendous weather we’ve been seeing around the country.

Of course, we will be entering into February soon, so that means that the annual SPATEX exhibition is almost upon us!

in the hot tub and spa sector, plus we examine various options available for the effective sanitisation of pool water, options which use a variety of ingenious technologies to achieve quality results and a safe environment for users. UV is just one of them and once again, that gets its own stand-alone feature inside.

We also take a closer look at some of the products that are keeping the water flowing in pools and spas. I am of course talking pumps and we look at what’s currently available from numerous leading brands. We also highlight a number of the latest pool cleaners, the majority of which are robotic and all will take the effort out of cleaning swimming pools throughout the season. At this point I think it’s worth me highlighting that a number of the products mentioned in this issue’s features will be present at SPATEX, but you can also bet that many more didn’t quite make our deadlines too or are being kept under wraps until the show opens its doors. We also take a look at a Manchester-based project which needed assistance from Aquality Leisure and Heatstar to become operational again after a severe flooding incident.

For the UK wet leisure industry, the three-day SPATEX show is the first major industry event of any year and it returns to the Coventry Building Society Arena from 3 to 5 February. This year’s event will be an extra special occasion too, as SPATEX is celebrating its milestone 30th anniversary – it’s therefore fitting that the event will be the biggest to date. If ever there was a year to attend, this is it, as the organisers have been pulling out all the stops to make it three days to remember. For anyone who has a need for new products, services, or perhaps some knowledge or inspiration, SPATEX is without doubt the place to be. This year it will again feature over 100 high quality exhibitors, many of which are regulars, which just goes to show the importance of the annual event. For those unfamiliar with SPATEX, the gathering helps to keep the trade up to speed with the latest products, technologies, trends and much more. As always, in this latest issue, we feature a full preview of the trade show and take a closer look at what visitors can expect to find when they arrive at this year’s Midlands-based event. Throughout this issue, we take a closer look at various products that span a number of sectors across the industry. For example, we showcase some of the latest models and brands available

Our Opinion piece in this issue is provided by STA CEO Dave Candler, who provides some thoughts on the subject of working partnerships, something which he has tried hard to strengthen during his ten years at the helm of the organisation. A perfect example of this is provided by the STA’s Chris Bateman who looks at how the leisure industry in the UK is coming together to strengthen safety, learning and collaboration across the industry with the aim of reducing chemical handling risks.

There’s also our regular and useful updates from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA, including a piece on the benefits membership offers to businesses. We also highlight the change in branding being brought in by both SPATA and BISHTA, along with brand new websites for each association.

Finally, we’ve also got our round up of all the latest industry, people, product and eco news from both here in the UK and further afield. So with this first issue of the year broken down, all that leaves me to say is I hope you enjoy reading it, I hope to see you at SPATEX and of course most of all, I hope you all have a fantastic 2026!

Aqua Blue Designs: Celebrating 50 Years Of Visionary Wet Leisure Design

In the ever-evolving world of wet leisure design, few companies can claim a legacy as enduring and influential as Aqua Blue Designs. This year, the firm celebrates its 50th anniversary – a milestone that reflects not only longevity but a sustained commitment to innovation, safety and excellence.

Founded in the mid-1970s by the late Ron Stempfer, Aqua Blue Designs quickly established itself as a leader in bespoke pool architecture. Ron’s influence extended beyond the company; he was a key figure in the Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association (SPATA), joining in December 1987 and later serving on its technical committee. His work in redrafting SPATA’s standards in the late 1990s helped shape the framework that guides the industry today.

In 2026, the company is led by Managing Director Michael Cormacey, who joined Aqua Blue Designs during Ron’s tenure and has steered the business for the past 25 years. With 45 years of experience in the sector and a background in construction engineering, Michael brings a grounded, practical approach to design.

From underground pools carved into cliff faces to hydrotherapy clinics designed with energy-efficient architecture, Aqua Blue Designs has consistently pushed the boundaries of what’s possible. Their portfolio spans 27 countries and includes over 30 industry awards, a testament to their technical skill and creative vision.

Aqua Blue Designs has also played a role in knowledge-sharing

across the sector. Its directors have regularly contributed to trade publications and spoken at key industry events such as SPATEX and ISPE seminars, offering insights drawn from hundreds of completed projects.

As Aqua Blue Designs celebrates its golden anniversary, the company reflects on a legacy built on creativity, collaboration and a deep respect for the craft. It’s a story that continues to inspire.

£400K REFURB BEGINS AT HERTFORDSHIRE SPA

Everyone Active, which manages the centre in partnership with St Albans City & District Council, is investing in a full modernisation of the spa to create a refreshed environment for relaxation and wellbeing.

A major focus of the upcoming refurbishment is the renewal of the spa’s heat and water experience – the suite of thermal and water-based facilities that includes the steam room, sauna, hydrospa and monsoon showers. New features such as an ice cave with cold plunge baths, a salt room, infrared seating and upgraded heated loungers will further enhance the wellbeing offering.

The men’s and women’s spa changing rooms will also undergo a full refurbishment, with new lockers, showers and vanity areas, and all five treatment rooms will be refreshed.

Named after the Roman goddess of safety, health and prosperity, the new spa is home to both indoor and outdoor facilities and on the water leisure side, guests can look forward to experiencing a 15-metre indoor swimming pool, a sauna offering views of the surrounding estate, a salt steam room, heated loungers and an outdoor hydrotherapy pool.

The opening of Salus Spa marks the latest development in a wider transformation project at Aldwark Manor Estate. The £12m investment follows £18m already pumped into the hotel since new owners, Depho Estates acquired the site in 2019.

Bespoke Design Sees Haven’s Poolside Retail Sales Increase By

Working in partnership with Haven, one of the UK’s leading holiday park operators, Splash About has unveiled the first-of-its-kind poolside retail store at Haven’s Primrose Valley site in Yorkshire. The bespoke designed space seamlessly combines tailored revenue generating pool products with an unparalleled customer experience. After six weeks of opening, poolside retail sales have increased by 27% compared with the same period in 2024.

The concept focuses on retail theatre merchandising with three-dimensional, characterled promotion based around cute sea creatures.

Bespoke point of sale has been specifically designed to maximise the space and contributes to the open plan design which cleverly creates a footfall flow to capitalise on sales. The space takes

27%

advantage of natural daylight while the undulating ceiling is LED lit and mirrors the ocean waves adding to the overall theme.

“Poolside retail has historically been a cost centre for holiday parks in the UK; we are changing this perception effectively turning poolside retail into profit centres,” commented Lesley Beach, Managing Director at Splash About International.

Lesley continued: “It’s not just about providing the most extensive range of swimwear and pool accessories; it’s employing a smart business model which forward thinking companies like Haven are doing. Products are specifically tailored to the holiday park’s demographic, so they generate revenue. Retail space is not an afterthought it is strategic and designed to offer lasting value and crucially it’s creating a powerful new revenue stream for our partners.”

Simon Palmer, Head of Activities and Leisure at Haven, said: “Our collaboration with Splash About is more than just a shop, it’s designed to enhance the family holiday experience, giving our guests a convenient, relevant choice of swim essentials when they need them and an exceptional experience.”

REFURBISHMENT WORKS COMPLETED AT HERTFORDSHIRE FACILITY

Visitors to Hitchin Swimming and Fitness Centre can now enjoy upgraded facilities, as work continues on a wider programme to decarbonise and modernise North Herts’ leisure centres.

Members’ changing rooms have been transformed. The health suite has also received a full refurbishment. The sauna has been replaced with a brandnew cabin and benches, and the steam room has undergone a complete makeover with new tiling, modern lighting and a fully refreshed interior.

These works form part of North Herts Council’s £16.4m decarbonisation programme, part-funded by £7.74m from the government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.

Across the district’s leisure centres, the project involves installing new air source heat pumps, solar panels, and upgraded insulation, windows and ventilation. Once completed, these improvements are expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 60%.

WORK BEGINS ON NEW LUXURY WELLNESS RETREAT

Construction has officially begun on Sakura Spa, a brandnew luxury wellness retreat at Gisborough Hall in North Yorkshire.

Designed to offer a peaceful sanctuary on the edge of the North York Moors, Sakura Spa will bring together restorative treatments, nature-inspired design, and the warm hospitality Gisborough Hall’s guests love.

Training Pool Reopens After Edmonton Leisure Centre Refurbishment

Edmonton Leisure Centre’s refurbished training pool re-opened at the start of December marking the completion of a major renovation project – jointly funded by GLL and Enfield Council – to improve and modernise the whole facility.

The completion of the twophase refurbishment was marked by a special event attended by a number of key people from the council and leisure providers GLL. Gold medallist swimmer Kieran Bird also attended as a special guest.

As part of the refurbishment, the training pool, splash pool and surrounding areas have been retiled throughout and new LED lighting installed. The pool –which has been designed with learners in mind – offers a warm, shallow environment for building water confidence, helping babies, children and adults to take their first steps in swimming.

The first phase of the comprehensive programme of works to modernise and improve Edmonton Leisure Centre started

in April 2025. In August, the main six lane, 25-metre pool swimming pool reopened, with a renovated changing village and new lighting.

Cabinet Member for Environment and Placemaking at Enfield Council, Cllr Sabri Ozaydin, said: “We know how important Edmonton Leisure Centre is to the health, wellbeing and social life of local people, so we are delighted that this major renovation project is now complete

with the reopening of the training pool.

“We have invested not only in this facility but also the health and wellbeing of the local community, who now have a leisure centre they can be really proud of.”

Vishal Karia, GLL Partnership Manager, says: “The event has been a huge success with really positive feedback from swim customers on the look of the refurbished teaching pool.”

Steel Framework Takes Shape At Caerphilly Leisure And Wellbeing Hub

Steel framework installation has now begun at the site of the new Caerphilly Leisure and Wellbeing Hub, marking a major milestone in the construction of this flagship community facility.

Once complete in 2027, the hub will bring together sport, fitness, wellbeing and community spaces under one roof, creating a modern, inclusive environment designed to support active and healthy

lifestyles for residents across the borough.

We are delivering this exciting project alongside contractor Morgan Sindall and architect Watson Batty, with Hadron Consulting overseeing project management.

The project was procured through the UK Leisure Framework, owned and managed by Denbighshire Leisure Limited (DLL) and the £38m investment is being delivered through a combination of funding, including £20m from the UK Government. The project has been developed as part of the Council’s ambitious Place Shaping programme and supports the Sport and Active Recreation Strategy 2019–2029, which aims to transform facilities and opportunities for residents.

The Caerphilly Leisure and Wellbeing Hub will feature a sixlane 25 metre swimming pool with flumes and splash features, plus a wide variety of other fitness and leisure facilities.

Morgan Sindall Dives Into Historic Leisure Centre Renovation

Morgan Sindall Construction’s London business has begun the refurbishment of the historic Kings Hall Leisure Centre in Hackney, with plans to preserve key features of the Grade II listed building throughout construction.

Morgan Sindall was selected by Hackney Council for the project which has been procured through the Southern Construction Framework (SCF). The £68.7m development includes plans to refurbish the centre’s existing large pool, as well as construct a new large pool and smaller teaching pool. The team will also repair the existing façade and preserve the historic entrance, maintaining glazed bricks and balustrades that are important parts of the building’s heritage.

In addition to restorative aspects of the project, Morgan Sindall will also construct a variety of new build features,

including a sauna and steam room. The team is committed to maintaining the building’s original essence by matching new structures to the existing brickwork. The restoration and new build works are on track to handover in autumn 2028.

In line with Morgan Sindall’s commitment to sustainability, an assortment of solar PV panels will be installed in addition to a new M&E system which is more energy and cost efficient than the property’s current HVAC system – powering Hackney’s beloved leisure centre in a greener way than ever before.

Morgan Sindall’s London team has been working with FaulknerBrowns Architects, Alan Baxter Civil and Structural Engineering, Atkins Realis Cost Consultants, Hadron Consulting and Ares Landscape Architects on the project.

Fylde Council Announces Preferred Bidder for St Annes Pool

The new Cath Thom Leisure Centre at Wilson Sports Village has opened to the public, the latest project successfully delivered by Alliance Leisure for Hyndburn Borough Council in Lancashire.

Funded by the Council and Sport England, the circa £13m scheme sets a new benchmark for delivering cost-effective, inclusive and sustainable facilities tailored to the needs of the local community.

The project faced a setback following the collapse of the original contractor, ISG, which went into administration in September 2024. Works restarted in January 2025 after the appointment of Universal Civils and Build under the UK Leisure Framework, allowing the development to complete in line with the original scope, specification and quality standards.

Designed by Pozzoni, the facility is one of the key

environmentally responsible buildings in the borough, achieving an impressive A-rated energy efficiency thanks to high-performance construction materials, innovative design features and rigorous quality controls.

The centre’s fossil fuelfree heating, cooling and hot water systems are powered by energy-efficient technologies and supported by solar panels, dramatically reducing the building’s carbon footprint. These measures reduce carbon emissions and running costs, while placing the centre on the cusp of an A+ rating, supporting the Council’s ambition to achieve net-zero carbon activities by 2030.

At the heart of the leisure centre is a 25m swimming pool that is equipped with the Poolpod 3.0 – a platform lift system offering a safe, dignified and independent entry experience.

Application For Welsh World-class Sport And Leisure Resort Allowed To Proceed

Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council’s Planning, Regulatory and Licensing committee has decided to su=pport the proposal for a £300m world-class Sport And Leisure Resort – Rhydycar West. The project will see the UK’s longest indoor snow centre, a tropical indoor waterpark, a dynamic indoor and outdoor adventure centre, hotels and woodland lodges utilising the beauty of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

The planning application was submitted in 2023 and the Welsh government confirmed it would not intervene in November, sending it back to Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council for final review.

It is thought that the project will create

1,500 construction jobs, 1,200 of which will be local and 800 permanent jobs once the resort is operational.

Leader of the Merthyr Tydfil council, Cllr Brent Carter, said: “Rhydycar West is without doubt groundbreaking and a complete game changer for Merthyr Tydfil, complementing the offerings of Bike Park Wales, Zip World and Rock UK-Climbing Centre.

“This project will massively support and boost our economy and offer multiple opportunities for our future generations.

“The amount of support for Rhydycar West has been truly overwhelming. I, for one, am thrilled.”

Airstream Heat Recovery Ventilation Systems For Commercial And Residential Pools

Airstream has been designing, manufacturing and delivering cuttingedge heat-recovery units for commercial and residential swimming pools for over 40 years.

Their commercial sector Airstream – C swimming pool heat recovery units include composite plate heat-exchangers that are non-corrosive, unlike the aluminium plate heat-exchangers found in some competitor products. Airstream heat-exchangers are built to last, which is why they offer a lifetime warranty.

The plate heat-exchangers used are incredibly efficient, allowing up to 90% heat recovery to reduce top-up heat requirements, carbon emissions, capital and running costs. To bring down costs even further, fans are equipped with high-efficiency motors that reduce fan power by up to 80% as the need for dehumidification lessens at times of low occupancy, such as overnight. This means that fans aren’t running at full capacity when they don’t need to, saving both money and energy.

The Airstream – C units feature a swimming pool ventilation system to provide high levels of temperature and humidity control, creating the healthiest environment for swimmers, all while eliminating the risk of interstitial condensation which can lead to structural damage.

Designed for the residential market, Airstream – R units have enhanced climate control to ensure the healthiest environment for total comfort. The units have humidity control ranging from 50-70%, to maintain dehumidification balance and prevent excess condensation.

Airstream – R units are made from corrosion-resistant materials, specially designed for chlorinated and saline pools. Cross-flow plate heatexchangers offer up to 85% heat-recovery to reduce topup heat requirements, carbon emissions, capital and running costs. As with the C units, plate heat exchangers also come with a lifetime warranty.

All units come with an industry-leading five-year warranty too when purchasers sign-up to a five-year service plan.

MD150 13-in-1 Photometer Sets A New Standard In Pool Water Testing

Professional pool water testing is evolving and in 2026 the MD150 13-in-1 Photometer will set a new benchmark for how operators monitor and manage water quality.

Designed to give operators greater visibility and confidence, Lovibond’s MD150 combines 13 parameters in one compact, rugged instrument. In addition to core parameters, the MD150 enables routine monitoring of other tests including phosphate and sulphate amongst others, helping operators take a proactive approach to water quality and asset protection.

Phosphates encourage algae growth even at low levels, while sulphate levels are increasing in source water and from common pool chemicals. Sulphates are aggressive and can attack concrete, corrode metal fixtures and degrade plastics. By monitoring these additional parameters, operators gain earlier insight and better control.

The MD150 is future-proofed to support evolving industry guidance, including an extended lower pH range to reflect changing operational trends. Built for real pool environments, it is IP67 waterproof, impact resistant and rubber-protected, delivering reliable performance on site.

With an advanced optical system, one-time zero function and NFC and USB-c data transfer with free app and software, the MD150 delivers fast results and seamless reporting.

Is Your Supply Chain Driving Up Your Carbon Footprint?

Global efforts to cut carbon emissions are transforming industries, with net-zero targets set by agreements like the Paris Agreement and UK’s Climate Change Act. For leisure facilities, including commercial pools, this means rethinking operations – not just energy use but the entire supply chain.

Traditional pool chlorination significantly impacts carbon footprints. High-strength chemicals require manufacturing, packaging, transport and specialist handling – adding Scope 3 emissions, packaging waste and maintenance costs. These indirect emissions are now a key focus for ESG reporting.

Electrochlorination is emerging as a leading solution for sustainability and costefficiency. It generates a safe, low-strength (<1%) sodium hypochlorite solution on site using only salt, water and electricity –eliminating bulk chemical deliveries and

hazardous storage. This also reduces COSHH risks, simplifies operations and supports planned maintenance.

Hyprolyser® iSEC® systems are fully BPR compliant and the only UK-manufactured electrolysers. Built for reliability, they have an unmatched track record – no units decommissioned in 15 years except for pool closures. Customers report up to 50% savings in combined energy and chemical

costs, alongside improved efficiency. Carbon benefits extend beyond chemical elimination. Integrated IoT monitoring reduces site visits and reactive callouts, cutting emissions and downtime while boosting operational resilience.

As ESG criteria tighten, technologies addressing carbon at source are invaluable. Electrochlorination reduces emissions across the lifecycle – from chemical manufacture to servicing – providing measurable environmental impact. For pool operators seeking practical steps toward net-zero, Hyprolyser® iSEC® offers a proven, lower-carbon solution aligned with modern sustainability goals.

Finnmark Sauna Celebrates Funding As North East Expansion Strengthens UK Sector Growth

In December, Finnmark Sauna secured a six-figure funding package from Barclays, marking a significant end-of-year milestone for the North East business as demand for authentic thermal experiences continues to rise across the UK spa sector.

The investment arrives ahead of the company’s ten-year anniversary in March and will support significant development across its manufacturing and operational capabilities.

The funding will enable Finnmark Sauna to expand into a larger, production-focused facility and create new skilled roles in the region. It will also accelerate innovation in sauna manufacturing, strengthen supply

chain resilience and enhance digital systems to support the growing number of spa and wellness operators seeking highquality thermal solutions.

Jake Newport, Founder and CEO of Finnmark Sauna, said: “This funding from Barclays is a real vote of confidence in Finnmark and in the North East. It enables us to scale responsibly and invest in new innovations and technologies that will keep our operations robust for years to come. Whilst we have an international reach and a market-leading UK presence, we are proud to be building a business that is growing in the region for the region.”

In the last year, Finnmark Sauna has been responsible for several landmark projects that highlight the rise of thermal wellness experiences in the UK. These include the UK’s highest sauna at The Shard, the UK’s largest sauna at arc in Canary Wharf and the UK’s first floating sauna, WYLD in Liverpool Docks. Work on Finnmark’s expanded facility will begin early next year as the company prepares for its anniversary and the next phase of its development.

Frost Locker Fills The Cold Therapy Gap

After 63 years of shaping America’s sauna and steam culture, Am-Finn is taking on the other side of recovery: the cold. The company’s newest innovation, the patent pending Frost Locker, is redefining what cold therapy means for modern wellness with an approach grounded in science, engineered for comfort and built for scale.

Cold exposure has become one of the fastest-growing wellness trends, yet most people never stick with it. Between the shock of cold water, sanitation issues and the high cost of maintenance, ice baths and cryo chambers often remain inaccessible and impractical. Frost Locker fills that gap with a cleaner, safer and more sustainable solution designed for everyday use.

“Most people don’t want to torture themselves to feel better,” said Steve Kuzara, Engineering Director for Frost Locker. “We built

Frost Locker so people can step into a calm, cold space, relax and still get the real physiological benefits.”

Frost Locker applies recent findings in thermal physiology directly, maintaining a precisely controlled air temperature of -1 to 4°C (30 to 40°F) – a scientifically validated range shown in multiple studies to safely stimulate thermogenesis without distress. The system allows the body to adapt naturally rather than triggering a stress response. Research has demonstrated that moderate, sustained cooling can activate brown adipose tissue, the body’s natural heat engine, to support recovery, energy balance and overall wellbeing without the risks and stress of extreme cold exposure.

Unlike water-based plunge systems, Frost Locker’s dry, sealed environment eliminates hygiene challenges, plumbing requirements and fluctuating water temperatures. The result is a plug-and-play coldroom solution that delivers consistent, repeatable recovery experiences for gyms, spas, athletic facilities and wellness studios. Users can stand or sit comfortably, breathe normally and finish feeling refreshed, not stressed from shock.

New Saunas Launch At Whitechapel Sports Centre

Tower Hamlets Council in London has invested a further £80,000 to install two new bespoke Aspen saunas at Whitechapel Sports Centre, continuing its commitment to improving leisure facilities and supporting healthier communities across the borough.

Following the successful refurbishment and upgrade of the historic spa at York Hall, the council has delivered brandnew saunas in both the male and female changing rooms at Whitechapel Sports Centre, enhancing the leisure experience for Be Well members to support health and wellbeing.

Before the leisure service was brought back in-house, the saunas at Whitechapel were closed due to refurbishment needs and longstanding access issues. As part of the new investment, the council has installed controlled access doors to ensure the saunas are safely managed, fully licensed and available to Be Well members.

The saunas are the first project delivered as part of an additional £1.5m funding allocated in 2024 to tackle health inequalities and expand leisure provision. This latest investment builds on more than £4.8m already invested across centres in Tower Hamlets.

Cllr Kamrul Hussain, Cabinet Member for Culture and Recreation, said: “At a time when leisure services across the country are under pressure, Tower Hamlets Council is choosing to invest in our community.

“This £80,000 investment at Whitechapel Sports Centre is about more than new saunas – it’s about removing barriers to health and wellbeing and ensuring residents have access to high-quality, affordable facilities close to home.”

Fluidra has agreed to acquire 100% of Variopool Holding BV, headquartered in the Netherlands. The company, which plays an active role in commercial pool projects across the world, is a recognised specialist in the design, production and installation of movable swimming pool floors and walls (bulkheads), as well as aquatic playgrounds and underwater windows.

Variopool has a team of around 65 employees and is expected to generate sales of €25m and EBITDA of around €3.5m in 2026. The company’s movable swimming pool floors and walls help optimise, repurpose and increase the flexibility of commercial pool facilities. Variopool will be valued at less

Welcoming New Faces And Branding For 2026

Welcome to this first issue of 2026, I trust that you are raring to go again after a festive break.

This new year sees three new faces heading up some of the industry companies; Amanda Thompson-Smith is SPATA’s new Chair (taking over from Jon Herbert), Arun Sarna is PIP’s new Chair (taking over from Mark Ramsden), and Dorian Davies will be taking over as BSPF President from Dyfed Thompson-Smith at the Industry Gala and Awards Evening at SPATEX. A huge thank you to the outgoing Chairs and a very warm welcome to the new team.

For BISHTA and SPATA, the new year sees the launch of new branding for the trade associations, and feedback from members has been universally positive on the changes. See more on the following pages and for visitors to SPATEX, look out for the logos and branding on stand H21, the Industry Hub (located near Seminar Arena 2). Huge thanks to Adtrak for their expert guidance on leading the trade associations through the process. My thanks to Dorian Davies and Jon Herbert for their leadership for BISHTA and SPATA respectively over the past year, with help from a dedicated steering group, overseen by Sallie Leslie-Golding.

On the subject of SPATEX, the show is again a sell-out, and it is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Please make the most of the exhibition and the event’s educational and entertainment elements. The Industry Gala & Awards Evening (that is open to everyone but pre-booking is essential) is on Tuesday 3 February. The evening reveals the SPATA

Following a much-needed festive break, in this first issue of the year, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes highlights a number of changes in personnel and branding, plus looks at the upcoming SPATEX exhibition, Awards, EDI initiatives and more!

and BISHTA award winners at the 2026 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards ceremony. It is also an opportunity for the ISPE to re-present their 2025 Awards. Thank you to all the sponsors this year for supporting the event; their logos appear below. The SPATEX Party is on Wednesday 4 February. Starting at 5pm, it is a chance to relax and socialise with industry peers. After the Party, there is a ticketed evening social event with lots of fun games to try, to help SPATEX officially celebrate its anniversary.

The 2026 British Pool & Hot Tub Award winners provide the industry with an opportunity to generate much-needed publicity to encourage pool, hot tub, spa and wellness ownership. The 2026 award winners will also have the chance to be shortlisted for the 2026 EUSA Awards, being held at Piscine Global in Lyon (this coming November). The exact date of the awards ceremony is yet to be confirmed at the time of going to press.

Regarding the education strand at SPATEX, I would like to thank Luke Griffiths and his ISPE colleagues for putting on an excellent workshop programme in Seminar Arena 1. Thank you also to the other industry bodies, such as the STA, PWTAG, IoS, and RLSS UK, for their respective contributions to the SPATEX seminars in Arena 2.

Some engaging sessions include SPATA and BISHTA updates on Wednesday (in Arena 1 and Arena 2), thanks to partnership working with colleagues, including Dr Ant Shepherd at The University of Portsmouth. He will be sharing insights into the warm water immersion research they have been conducting using hot tubs that show a positive impact on helping reduce Type

2 Diabetes. Chris Brady will explain how this can drive more spa sales through development and innovation. Ed Platt from the Chemical Business Association will host a session on Pool Chemical Safety: Logging and Learning Lessons from Real-world Incidents. I would also like to mention the work of Dr Geertje Van Keulen from Swansea University Medical School. Dr Van Keulen, a member of The Biofilm Alliance, will discuss ‘A Network for Regulatory Sciences, Academic Research, and Industry Collaboration’. Microbial biofilms are estimated to cost $5 trillion annually, affecting health, safety and industry. A lack of regulatory frameworks and standardised protocols hinders progress in biofilm control. This session will outline efforts to address these challenges and drive real-world solutions.

For anyone who wants to support the BSPF’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) policy, there are practical ways that you can do so, by becoming an EDI champion in your workplace, and attending training to help you on this important topic. I am delighted to say that the first £1,000 has been raised via GoFundMe to generate sufficient funds to raise awareness of EDI and to offer low-cost courses to explore the essential themes. To register your interest in attending or hosting a course, please get in touch on 01256 356210.

Enjoy the 30th anniversary of SPATEX and your time in Coventry!

The Benefits Of Joining Your Industry Trade Association

With businesses constantly looking for a competitive edge, in this article, BSPF PR & Marketing Manager Sallie Leslie-Golding looks at just some of the numerous membership benefits that SPATA and BISHTA provide with members providing input about the importance of their own company’s membership

Trade associations play a pivotal role in supporting and empowering businesses within their respective industries.

SPATA (Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association) and BISHTA (British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association) are no exceptions. While each association serves distinct sectors, their shared dedication to raising standards, providing resources and championing their members’ success makes them indispensable for swimming pool and hot tub companies. Together, they represent the epitome of professionalism, collaboration and growth, offering members a wealth of advantages that can transform their businesses.

In this article, read what some SPATA and BISHTA members have to say about the value of membership:

“Being a BISHTA member is a mark of prestige that reflects our commitment to excellence. It’s not just about belonging to an association, it’s about embracing the technical expertise and educational resources that BISHTA provides. These tools empower us to continually raise the bar in both product quality and customer service. Our motivation is simple: to maintain and surpass the highest standards, ensuring every customer experience is exceptional.

Membership inspires us to innovate, improve and deliver with confidence, knowing we are part of a network dedicated to professionalism and integrity.”

“BISHTA membership offers real benefits by connecting businesses with opportunities to influence and strengthen the industry. At ITS Europe, we value upholding and advancing standards which align with BISHTA’s commitment to setting industry benchmarks and promoting ethical trading. Through initiatives such as the British Pool and Hot Tub Conference, members gain access to shared knowledge, advocacy and representation, ensuring their voices are heard. The support we receive, from technical guidance to promotional opportunities, is invaluable. Our founders built the business on innovation and continual improvement and our membership reflects those same principles. Working with bodies that uphold impartial standards, encourage open debate around legislation and provide trusted technical guidance is essential for the industry. With water treatment often misunderstood, BISHTA, SPATA and the wider sector play a critical role in promoting safe, consistent practice. I’m committed to supporting that mission and helping raise standards together.”

– David Ramsden, Complete Pool Controls.

Trade associations set benchmarks that ensure consistent service delivery and best practices

“Membership in respected industry trade associations such as SPATA and BISHTA brings significant value to our pool and hot tub business. Furthermore, affiliation with these respected trade associations enhances our credibility and strengthens our reputation. It also allows us to contribute to and benefit from the strong, unified voice they provide within the wider wet leisure industry, supported by their national online and social media presence.” – Mark Daniels, Sales Manager at Home Counties Horsham.

“As a BISHTA member, I value the chance to collaborate with fellow professionals to share technical expertise and develop resources that keep our industry leading the way in safe water practices. The guidance on HSG 282 is crucial for Holiday Let owners, helping them stay compliant and safeguard their guests. Equally important is BISHTA’s technical guidance on Ice Baths, which supports both the industry and end users, whether in domestic homes or business settings, by providing clear advice on selecting the right products and maintaining the highest water hygiene standards. These resources protect consumers, strengthen our industry and champion BISHTA’s commitment to the highest industry standards and promoting safe water.”

– Niamh Williams, Sales Executive at Concept Spa.

“Being a SPATA member since 2009 has been a real asset to our business. The networking and collaboration with other pool professionals helps us share proven expertise and stay connected. SPATA plays a vital role in empowering the future of the industry by supporting contractors and promoting best practice. Their commitment to setting and maintaining high standards underpins the exceptional quality for each of our projects, be it small or large. Membership gives us reassurance that we’re part of a trusted community focused on professionalism and progress.”

– Phil Gordon, Partner at Jim Gordon Associates LLP.

We extend our sincere thanks to all the SPATA and BISHTA members who generously shared their experiences for this feature. Their quotes highlight the real value of membership, from access to expert guidance and technical resources to the sense of community and collaboration that strengthens the industry.

Members spoke passionately about how being part of SPATA and BISHTA enhances credibility, supports business growth and provides opportunities for networking and learning. These insights demonstrate that membership is more than a badge, it’s a commitment to excellence and a gateway to shared success.

SPATA And BISHTA To Launch

Bold New Brand Identities And Websites At SPATEX 2026

With SPATEX on the horizon, here, Sallie Leslie-Golding (PR & Marketing Manager for SPATA and BISHTA) details the official launch of new branding for both SPATA and BISHTA at the industry’s annual trade show

The wait is finally over, and what an incredible chapter it has been for the UK’s wet leisure industry. February 2026 marks a milestone that will be remembered for years to come as SPATA (Swimming Pool & Allied Trades Association) and BISHTA (British & Irish Spa & Hot Tub Association) officially unveil their striking new brand identities and launch their completely new websites at SPATEX, the industry’s flagship event. This is more than a rebrand; it’s a bold step into the future, and I couldn’t be prouder to share the story behind it.

When we first revealed the new branding to our members back in October 2025, it was the start of an exciting journey. That early access gave members the chance to begin transitioning to the new look, updating their websites, social media, vehicles, uniforms and marketing materials. We wanted them to feel part of this transformation from the very beginning, and the response was fantastic. Seeing members embrace the change with enthusiasm has been one of the most rewarding parts of this process.

2026 AND BEYOND

Fast forward to February, and the anticipation has reached its peak. The official switch to the new branding has been timed to coincide with SPATEX 2026, ensuring maximum impact and visibility. This wasn’t just about changing logos; it was about redefining how SPATA and BISHTA present themselves to the industry and the world. Our new visual identity reflects everything we stand for: professionalism, innovation and leadership. It’s modern, dynamic and designed to resonate with today’s consumers while reinforcing the trust and authority that our associations have built over decades.

Working with the award-winning team at Adtrak, we’ve created brand identities that feel fresh and exciting, and we’ve paired them with something equally transformative: two brand-new websites. These sites have been built from the ground up to deliver a better experience for members and consumers alike. They’re visually stunning, but more importantly, they’re practical and intuitive. From finding registered members to accessing resources and exploring the world of pools, spas, wellness and hot tubs, everything is

INDUSTRY HUB AND OFFICIAL LAUNCH

2026 also sees the introduction of an informative Industry Hub at SPATEX (stand H21) with esteemed associations – STA (Swimming Teachers’ Association), RLSS UK (Royal Life Saving Society UK), PWTAG (Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group), IoS (Institute of Swimming), and the BSPF (British Swimming Pool Federation) with SPATA and BISHTA alongside – all conveniently situated on one large stand (adjacent to seminar Arena 2). The Industry

Hub creates a central hub for collaboration, networking and knowledge sharing, a true reflection of the community spirit that drives our industry forward.

SPATA and BISHTA will showcase the entries of the 2026 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards across the Industry Hub stand on day one of SPATEX, with the big reveal of this year’s award winners on days two and three, following the annual Industry Gala Evening, which takes place on Tuesday 3 February. This is the largest and most glamorous event in the industry calendar. This Oscar-esque event brings together guests from across the wet leisure industry to celebrate excellence, network with industry peers, and enjoy an unforgettable evening.

The hub will also showcase SPATA and BISHTA’s refreshed identities, prominently featured at the front with a welcome desk.

The aim is for the stand to be buzzing throughout the show, a hub of conversations.

Kicking off the brand and website launch, Adtrak have the first presentation slot of the day on Tuesday at 9.45am sharp, in seminar Arena 2, with an official switch-on of the new websites. Members attending the seminar will be treated to exclusive branded goodie bags, a celebratory gesture to mark this milestone and thank them for being part of the journey. We’re hoping the merchandise will prove to be a real hit, and it will be wonderful to see members proudly showing off their new items.

The launch at SPATEX is a celebration in every sense. Driving an electric atmosphere, Adtrak will lead the official countdown to the website switch-on. Our branding seminar is a highlight event that gives visitors an inside look at the creative journey behind this transformation, sharing how the new identity came to life, from the initial concepts to the final designs, and explaining the strategic thinking that underpins every element of the rebrand, which has included consultation from the SPATA National Council and the BISHTA Committee at all stages to get an accurate representation of our members’ opinions.

This rebrand is a statement of intent. It reflects everything SPATA and BISHTA stand for and positions our associations and our members at the forefront of a dynamic, evolving industry. As I said during the launch, “This rebrand is more than a new look, it’s a promise. A promise that SPATA and BISHTA will keep evolving, keep supporting our members, and keep championing best practice across the wet leisure industry. We’re ready for the future, and we want everyone to come on this journey with us”.

WORKING WITH OUR MEMBERS

For our members, this journey has been about more than logos and colours. It’s about aligning with a brand that represents quality, integrity and innovation. Since October, members have had access to everything they need to make the transition: logos, brand guidelines and practical advice, all available through our online Members’ Hub. We’ve worked hard to make this process smooth and supportive because we know that change can feel daunting. But the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Members have embraced the new identity with enthusiasm, and we can’t wait to see their businesses shining under the new branding.

Transparency has been key throughout this process. We’ve kept consumers and trade professionals informed every step of the way, with dedicated pages on our websites that explain the transition and reassure everyone that, while our look is evolving, our values remain the same. SPATA and BISHTA will always stand for quality, integrity and excellence.

Looking ahead, this rebrand isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about positioning SPATA and BISHTA for the future. It’s about creating a strong, unified identity that reflects the

vibrant, modern world of pools, spas, hot tubs and wellness. It’s about ensuring we continue to inspire consumer confidence and lead the way in setting standards. And it’s about giving our members the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly competitive market.

The new websites are a big part of that vision. They’re designed to be more than just information hubs; they’re platforms for engagement, education and inspiration. For consumers, they offer clear, accessible advice and easy ways to find registered professionals. For members, they provide streamlined access to resources, updates and support. And for the industry, they showcase the professionalism and expertise that SPATA and BISHTA represent.

A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT

This transformation has been a collaborative effort from start to finish. From the initial brainstorming sessions to the final launch, with over two years of commitment from PIP, (the Pool Industry Promotions committee), which initially welcomed the introduction of Adtrak as

our partners on this project. It’s been incredible to see the creativity and passion that’s gone into every detail. I want to thank everyone who played a part in making this happen: our members, our team, and our partners at Adtrak. Together, we’ve created something that truly reflects the future of wet leisure.

As we celebrate this milestone, I’m filled with excitement for what’s next. The rebrand and new websites are just the beginning. They lay the foundation for new initiatives, new opportunities, and new ways to support our members and engage with consumers. The future of wet leisure is bright, and SPATA and BISHTA are ready to lead the way.

To our members: thank you for embracing this change and making the transition with us. To the wider industry: welcome to a new era of wet leisure. Explore our new websites, discover the fresh branding, and join us in celebrating this exciting milestone.

The future starts now.

UK Industry Unites To Address Swimming Pool Chemical Incidents

As 2026 gets underway, Chris Bateman, STA Pool Plant Tutor looks at how the leisure industry in the UK is coming together to strengthen safety, learning and collaboration across swimming pools and spas, with a renewed focus on reducing chemical handling risks

Chemical handling incidents in swimming pools and spas present significant operational and safety risks across the leisure industry. Events involving chlorine gas release, chemical spills, fume exposure and dosing system failures can result in staff injury, public evacuation, reputational damage and regulatory scrutiny. In response, the Pool Chemical Forum (PCF), chaired by the Chemical Business Association (CBA), has been established to improve reporting, analysis and prevention of chemical incidents across the sector.

Incidents are not rare. Reported cases include excessive chlorine dosing, incorrect calculation of chemical strengths and accidental mixing of incompatible substances. In one event, chlorine gas release following chemical mixing required emergency services, evacuation of over 160 occupants and precautionary hospitalisation of a staff member. Such events highlight the inherent hazards of oxidising and corrosive substances routinely used in pool water treatment. While operator error is often cited, this oversimplifies the risk. Under COSHH, duty holders must assess, control and monitor hazardous substance risks, whether they are manufacturers, distributors, or end users. Swimming pools and spas are therefore subject to the same chemical risk management principles as the wider chemical industry.

Chemical handling incidents make up a substantial proportion of reportable events. Risks extend across the lifecycle of pool chemicals, including delivery, storage, manual handling, dosing, plant maintenance and emergency response. Compliance with ‘HSG179 – Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools’ and the ‘PWTAG Code of Practice’ requires robust systems that address these hazards comprehensively.

THE REPORTING GAP

Historically, the water leisure industry lacked a standardised mechanism for recording and analysing chemical incidents. Internal investigations by individual operators often fail to identify common failure modes or implement sector-wide preventative measures. Through its Responsible Care programme, which promotes continuous improvement in health, safety, security and environmental

performance, the CBA has developed a structured reporting tool tailored to recreational water facilities.

THE POOL CHEMICAL FORUM AND CHEMICAL INCIDENT REGISTER

The Pool Chemical Forum brings together stakeholders from leisure, pool operation and chemical supply sectors to promote chemical safety management. Chaired by the CBA, it focuses on awareness, competence and consistent incident reporting. Central to this is the Chemical Incident Register, which captures technical and operational data on pool chemical incidents.

Forum membership includes: BISHTA, Brenntag, The Chemical Business Association, CIMSPA, STA, IOS, ISPE, PWTAG, RLSS UK, SPATA and ukactive.

Operators and staff are encouraged to report chemical incidents, including spills, fume exposure, dosing errors, or other hazardous events. Reporting helps the industry develop better systems and learn from mistakes. Reports can be submitted anonymously via Pool Chemical Incident Form via the QR code.

The register contains 34 structured questions covering facility type, pool classification, location, chemicals involved, dosing system configuration, activity at the time of incident and the extent of health, environmental, or operational impact. It also records whether emergency response arrangements were activated.

A strong emphasis is placed on postincident learning. Contributors document control measures, staff training and corrective actions implemented, aligning

Risks extend across the lifecycle of pool chemicals, including delivery, storage, manual handling, dosing, plant maintenance and emergency response”

with COSHH requirements for reviewing risk assessments and control measures after significant incidents.

EARLY FINDINGS

Initial analysis of ten complete reports dating back to 2019 shows no geographical concentration of incidents. Chemical spills and fume-related events are most common, with mis-filling and handling errors frequently contributing.

A key concern is the lack of documented corrective actions: around 80% of reports did not specify measures to prevent recurrence, limiting shared learning and undermining continuous improvement principles embedded in COSHH and HSG179. The CBA emphasises that identifying and implementing preventative controls is critical to maintaining a robust safety management system and avoiding repeat incidents.

DRIVING TECHNICAL AND OPERATIONAL IMPROVEMENT

The Forum and Register represent a shift from reactive responses to proactive chemical risk management. Regular anonymised summary reports will highlight trends, common failure points and promote best practices in chemical storage, segregation, dosing system design, maintenance and emergency preparedness.

TRAINING AND COMPETENCY

Deviations − whether due to incorrect chemical selection, inadequate segregation, dosing system malfunction, or human error − can rapidly escalate into hazardous conditions. Competency-based training, such as the STA Level 3 Award in Pool Plant Operations, equips operators with knowledge of chemical properties, safe storage, dosing system operation, fault recognition, emergency procedures and appropriate control measures. Robust training, effective incident reporting and continuous improvement are essential to protecting staff, bathers and facilities.

Manchester Leisure Club Upgrades Pool Heating Systems

In this issue, we take a closer look at how Aquality Leisure and Heatstar provided timely solutions for a Manchester-based hotel and leisure club whose spa area and swimming pool had been closed following flooding which had damaged the site’s pool plant equipment and environmental control systems

The Waterside Hotel & Leisure Club in Manchester ensure a unique stay for their guests by offering both luxury accommodation and premium leisure facilities. Located in Didsbury, Manchester, and nestled alongside the River Mersey, the hotel has gained an excellent reputation as the place to go for relaxation, a workout, or to simply re-charge.

The hotel’s location offers stunning views of the River Mersey, but their close proximity has posed some serious challenges in the past. One such occasion was in January 2025, when the river experienced its highest water level in 66 years due to unprecedented heavy rain. As a result, several parts of the area’s flood wall defences were damaged and the river’s banks broke causing flooding in the Didsbury area and even as far as the city centre, leading

to 400 nearby homes being evacuated.

Unfortunately for The Waterside Hotel & Leisure Club, the entire basement level of the site was flooded, resulting in significant damage to the pool’s plant equipment.

Fortunately, the leisure club were able to reopen some of their facilities following the flood, however, due to the site having no functioning plant or air handling equipment, the spa and swimming pool had to remain closed. At this point it became clear that time was of the essence in getting the facility back up and running as quickly as possible.

GETTING THE CORRECT HELP

To assist in getting the hotel back to a fully functioning state, management sought out specialist advice and contacted Scotlandbased pool contractor Aquality Leisure, whose

extensive experience in the pool industry and expertise through the design, supply and installation of pool and spa facilities sets them apart. Aquality Leisure in turn approached Heatstar, a leading innovator in the design and manufacture of high-performance environmental control systems for swimming pools. Aquality Leisure have worked with Heatstar for over 30 years and consider them their preferred supplier when it comes to swimming pool heating and dehumidification.

AIR HANDLING FOR THE SPA

The first task was to replace the air handling equipment responsible for the spa area. It quickly became apparent that the existing Heatstar XF EC 500 Super units would need to be removed and a like-for-like direct replacement was recommended. With the

full emphasis on getting the spa running as quickly as possible, Heatstar were able to manufacture and deliver both of the new recommended units within four weeks of the order being placed.

AIR HANDLING FOR THE SWIMMING POOL

Moving onto the swimming pool, it became apparent that the existing air handling equipment would also need to removed. This was manufactured and installed by a different supplier, but given the complexity of access to the basement level (due to narrow stairwells and corridors), this company was only able to offer a ‘build-on-site’ solution and advised a lead time of 17 weeks.

As a result, Heatstar were approached to see if they could provide a solution to overcome the problem of the difficult plant room access. Heatstar have extensive experience in this area and understand that each swimming pool application has its own unique requirements and special challenges and ultimately, the importance of developing a totally bespoke system to satisfy the

requirements of the end user is always key.

Joe Venables of Heatstar attended a site meeting along with Stephen Booth of Aquality Leisure to offer a full appraisal of the current setup, making sure that the physical access to the site, any internal access constraints and the existing duct installation were all taken into consideration.

After the consultation, two Heatstar Phoenix EC 6000 Super AR systems were specified. The Phoenix EC provides effective humidity control, active heat recovery, full rate fresh air and both air and pool water heating and will assist with delivering optimum efficiency with reduced energy costs to the site.

The units were supplied in four separate sections to help overcome the access issues and specifically orientated during manufacture to match the old systems and connect seamlessly on to the existing ducting positions.

A JOB WELL DONE

Commenting on the project, Stephen Booth, Director at Aquality Leisure said: “Heatstar is our ‘go to’ company for all our pool air

handling needs. Our decision has always been based on a good working relationship linked with consistently reliable, wellengineered products and excellent aftersales backup. The Heatstar units are well known for their energy efficiency and always do exactly what they say on the box!”

From the point of order, the two Heatstar Phoenix units were impressively delivered within just six weeks. Unfortunately, the site had no means to store the units, therefore Heatstar and Aquality Leisure arranged all logistics so that the units were delivered to site in their many sections, then manoeuvred in to position and reconnected within just a day ready for the remaining services to be applied.

POOL CLEANERS – FROM SWITZERLAND TO THE WHOLE WORLD

Mariner 3S AG develops, builds and sells cleaning robots for professional swimming pool floor cleaning – for indoor, outdoor and natural pools. In this way, the company makes a decisive contribution to keeping swimming pools reliably clean and therefore attractive in the long term.

Founded in 1945, the Swiss family owned business has been one of the first companies to develop and sell automatic pool cleaning robots since 1970. Thanks to the constant search for improvements, close cooperation with specialised suppliers and the use of high-quality materials, the qualified employees create top-quality technological and long lasting products.

One of the company’s popular options is the clubliner series which integrates the technological innovations and know-how derived from years of work in the most compact form. High-quality materials, perfect workmanship, intelligent driving system and a unique filter system don’t just guarantee a long service life, they make the Mariner 3S clubliner unbeatable in cost efficiency. Developed for pools up to 25m long, it cleans all pool floors as well as paddling pools to a water depth of as little as 20cm with unmatched thoroughness and also deals with the pool’s walls.

Mariner’s
plus integrates the technological innovations and know-how derived from years of work

Sophisticated water routing guarantees effective cleaning performance across the entire width of the appliance. The dirty water is first channelled through the filter and only then through the pump. This protects the pump from clogging and damage. Thanks to flow optimisation, no dirt is whirled up that could escape cleaning. Two lamella filters guarantee a large filter surface. The spacious filter box can be conveniently removed from the top of the robot and carried to the cleaning area without any loss of dirt.

OCEA’S AI-ENABLED POOL CLEANERS PROVIDE PERFORMANCE EVERY TIME

Since its launch in 2022, the AI-enabled Inver-X cordless pool cleaner from Ocea UK has more than proven itself to the trade and pool owners. With up to an impressive 8 hours of endurance, the versatile pool cleaner is suitable for all pool sizes, finishes and user requirements. Whether a pool needs infrequent or daily cleans,

the model performs every time. With timerdelay and a selection of pre-programmed cleaning times of 30 mins, 1 hour and 2 hours the X-Warrior can be programmed to suit. There is even an app where users can set up programmes and adjust these with ease at the touch of a button. Unlike some other cleaners, the X-Warrior plots a path before it starts the clean. Using its precise Gyroscope motion sensor and six probes, it gathers spatial data to plot its path and avoid any obstacles. No more tripping over cables at the edge of the pool, as it’s completely cordless – just plug the cleaner in to recharge when required. For added convenience, the X-Warrior can be left in the pool when it is not in action, or leave it to clean under the cover when the pool is not in use. Removal from the pool is straightforward too – simply use a telescopic pole with the hook provided and it’s as easy as that, with the cleaner always ensuring it returns to the edge of the pool at the end of each cycle or when the battery is low.

With a run time of 4.5 hours and joining Ocea’s pool cleaner line up for 2026 is the S Series wireless robot pool cleaner. Like the Inver-X, also incorporates AI technology, can be programmed via an app, features a magnetic filter basket and has a choice of cleaning modes.

SPATEX Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary

The industry’s annual show returns to the Coventry Building Society Arena in February and with a 30th anniversary to celebrate, the organising team has pulled out all the stops to make it an event to remember. More than just an exhibition, SPATEX is also the UK’s largest networking opportunity for the wet leisure industry. Here, we cover all the news from both the organisers and exhibitors, highlight various products that can be seen, plus take look at the educational opportunities

Running for what is now its twelfth year in the West Midlands, the annual SPATEX returns to the Coventry Building Society Arena between 3 to 5 February and with a milestone 30th anniversary to celebrate, it’s fitting that the show will be the biggest ever event in its three decade history.

Speaking about this year’s event, Show Organiser Michele Bridle said: “Life is never dull working in such a fast-moving and evolving industry, and I love that the exhibition reflects its progression. I look forward to the annual reunion; meeting with exhibitors who have now become friends whilst at the same time making new contacts. None more so than this bumper edition – this 30th anniversary is as much a celebration for our exhibitors (both old and new) as it is for us. We could not have done it without their support.”

With SPATEX being the first opportunity in 2026 to see a bumper crop of new products, visitors should expect a healthy amount of innovation to be on display this year spanning the various sectors that the show now covers. For 2026, well over 100 participating companies will be present, including a handful of names that have never participated before. These brands will line up with more familiar names and exhibition regulars to provide a truly diverse range of products that span the wet leisure industry and increasingly, garden and outdoor leisure sectors too.

Since moving to the Midlands, the threeday event has firmly cemented its place on the exhibition calendar and as far as wet leisure is concerned in the UK and beyond, it is now the only event that covers the full spectrum of core wet leisure products and more. Something which is being recognised further afield as this year’s event once again features an international flavour.

As sponsors of the New Products’ Zones within the halls, we certainly hope to see as many new brands and products around the exhibition as possible.

For those unfamiliar with the exhibition, attendees can expect to see an impressive array of pools, swim spas, hot tubs and ice baths on display around the show hall, with a number of them providing working demos which is a huge bonus to visitors. In addition, expect to find just about anything associated with each of these products within the hall too.

This wide range of products and services is largely down to an organising team that has worked incredibly hard to create as broad an offering as possible, with many spa, hot tub and wellness companies now viewing the show as a crucial, must-attend annual event where they can showcase both their products and themselves.

With energy costs rising and with concerns surrounding the environment, there’s always a big focus on new, greener products that are both sustainable and energy efficient too.

Energy-saving will also be a major topic

in the show’s very popular double seminar programme. SPATEX is widely recognised as providing the best source of free information in the industry and it’s thanks to the tremendous support of a large number of esteemed associations that support the event – namely, Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers (ISPE), Swimming Teachers’ Association (STA), Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS), Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG), Water Management Society (WMSoc), Legionella Control Association (LCA), Institute of Swimming (IoS) and, of course, the British Swimming Pool Federation’s SPATA (Swimming Pool & Allied Trades Association) and BISHTA (British & Irish Spa & Hot Tub Association). Together, they bring their individual knowledge to create a varied programme of seminars that combines hands-on practical advice with technical know-how plus, essential health and safety guidance and compliance. This year, SPATEX will again play host to two seminar arenas, with free to attend workshops taking place in each across all three days.

All workshops hosted by the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers (ISPE) in Arena 1 award Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points plus a Certificate of Attendance – a valuable record of the courses that have been attended. Any STA seminars attended will also grant half a point to attendees.

In Arena 2, visitors can find a variety of experts who will be imparting their

knowledge across a wide range of wet leisure topics.

As you can see, SPATEX enjoys the support of numerous industry associations and in 2026 this goes one step further with the launch of a new initiative called the Industry Hub. This sees PWTAG (Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group), STA, RLSS UK, IoS, and the BSPF’s (British Swimming Pool Federation) SPATA (Swimming Pool & Allied Trade Association) and BISHTA (British & Irish Spa & Hot Tub Association) all on one stand and conveniently brings many water leisure experts together.

With plenty of stands, products and people to see, once again, the SPN team will be walking the show floor rather than taking a stand.

With this issue going to press in advance of the show, there’s always the chance of last minute changes, so for a full and up-to-date list of all the exhibitors or any show news, as always, visit the SPATEX website (www. spatex.co.uk) which also has lots of other useful information regarding the show which is sure to help attendees plan their visit more effectively, including a link to pre-book free on-site parking.

In short, as ever, there’s a lot to do and see at SPATEX, and that’s especially true in this anniversary year, so read on and hopefully we’ll whet your appetite for what is sure to be

B18

the greatest event in Coventry to date this year.

2026 Hot Tubs –The New Season

With demand across the hot tub and spa sector having improved year on year, manufacturers and distributors are keen to ensure the New Year brings new opportunities – meaning energy efficiency and value for money combined with unique form and functions will be key over the next 12 months and beyond.

With

that

in

mind, we look at hot tubs for the year supplied by both established and new brands which feature the latest in design and technology

The hot tub sector has endured a challenging time since the end of the Covid years, but increasingly positive signs emerged last year along with an air of optimism for 2026. And whilst it’s still too early to predict how the sector will fare over the next 12 months, for many within the sector, while the line going forward may not be as steep a one as liked or even a straight one, the general trajectory seems to be up.

So with demand for the year ahead somewhat uncertain, pressure remains on both manufacturers and retailers to offer not only the best possible service and value for money products, but also something unique or in many cases, something completely new.

Often, that means the introduction of new ranges, but it could also be enhancing existing models with the latest technological innovations, all with a view to keeping that all important step ahead of the competition.

So what’s on offer for the season ahead?

We round up just some of the latest models and brands looking to make their mark in this constantly evolving and competitive sector.

Ultraviolet And Ultra Effective

When it comes to the effective treatment of water in pools and other wet leisure environments, UV Systems are now an established choice, particularly for commercial settings. Their success is no real surprise when you consider UV’s many benefits, but their big selling point is a large reduction in the use of chlorine as a sanitiser. As more installations specify or make the switch to UV, there’s plenty of product options to consider and we take a look at a selection of them

Ultraviolet light, or UV light as it’s most commonly shortened to, is an extremely effective way to disinfect the water found in wet leisure environments.

UV’s power lies in its ability to eradicate microorganisms which includes bacteria, viruses, moulds and other pathogens that can exist in various wet leisure settings, including legionella, cryptosporidium and giardia variants which are able to survive in water despite the presence of a variety of sanitisers. UV light achieves this by penetrating the core of the DNA and disrupting the cellular metabolism until the cells are inactivated.

In addition to its biocide action, UV has a powerful oxidising effect which successfully removes organic pollution from pool and spa water, so when a UV solution is used in conjunction with chlorine, the chloramines that cause eye and skin irritation are turned into easily removed by-products that are nontoxic to humans and nature.

Although highly effective in sanitising the water found in wet leisure settings, UV is still a secondary disinfection process that is used alongside other treatments as the principal disinfectant. The reason for this is that UV only treats water as it passes through the lamp, therefore a sanitser such as chlorine is needed to provide a constant defence throughout the rest of the water system. Through the use of UV, it is possible to drastically reduce sanitiser levels by as much as 80% and down to as little as 0.5ppm. In addition to requiring less chemicals, water treated with a UV system will also require less backwashing and heating costs will be improved too – an extremely important factor with energy costs at the level they are at!

In summary, the water within a UV treated pool or spa uses less chemicals, requires less backwashing and both water and heating costs are reduced. It creates a better

environment for both users and operators too.

With numerous benefits, it’s no wonder that UV has become an established and popular choice for both commercial, and increasingly residential sectors and in this issue, we shine a light on just some of the ultra effective UV options that are available within the UK.

AQUASERVICE’S VERSATILE UV SYSTEM IS SUITABLE FOR ALL POOL TYPES

According to Norwegian manufacturer Aquaservice, their AquaUV Pool Line UV System (AQS-PL UV for short) is the most versatile swimming pool UV system on the market. It’s designed to treat all types of pool usage, from heavy use children’s swimming pools to low use diving or private pools.

Of course, each type of usage requires a different type of UV set up – no one type of UV system will fit all swimming pool usage and requirements – and systems are offered with flow rates ranging from 6m3/h to 580m3/h and the total maximum lamp power output spanning 0.4kW to 8.4kW. For ease of installation, connections can be amended to suit pipework and in addition, having the ability to supply bespoke options when required, makes it one of the most unique swimming pool UV systems available on the market.

These medium pressure UV lamp systems

offer a minimum lamp life of 10,000 hours, and as with the company’s Pool Line filters, they have been designed to comply with NSF 50 standard. Other features of the AQSPL UV systems include:

• Corrosion Resistant Epoxy Coating

• Power Stepping

• Manual or Automatic wiper

• BUS connection option

• Temperature Switch or Sensor.

AQS-PL UV systems emit polychromatic UV radiation. The multiple wavelengths in the medium pressure UV lamps destroy the molecular bonds of combined chlorine/ chloramine compounds. Therefore, UV removal of chloramines is a non-chemical and reliable method to control combined chlorine in swimming pools. In addition, each system is sized and designed to achieve a minimum of a 99.9% reduction of cryptosporidium, therefore guaranteeing safe bathing for all with no risk of chlorine resistant organisms surviving in the water.

LET BIO-UV AND ASTRALPOOL MAKE LIGHT WORK OF WATER DISINFECTION

AstralPool UK and BIO-UV have been working together for just over two years with the Hampshire-based distributor supplying the French manufacturer’s UV Stainless Steel, UV FW and UV NEO systems for residential pools and UV MPL, UV FW and NSF certified triogen® UV CF systems for commercial installations.

Customers are constantly looking for more environmentally friendly solutions to treat and disinfect their pool water automatically.

For over 30 years, BIO-UV Group met these challenges by offering alternative technologies (UV-C, salt electrolysis and ozone) and complementary solutions to treat water, guaranteeing flawless hygiene and bathing comfort. Some of the advantages

Aquaservice claim their AquaUV Pool Line UV System is the most versatile swimming pool UV system on the market

UV SYSTEMS

of the BIO-UV range of UV-C products on offer include:

• Mirror-polished 316L stainless steel, passivated 316L stainless steel or PVC reactors ranges

• Dedicated electronic ballasts guaranteeing maximum UV lamp efficiency and integrated control

• Lamp operating indicator light for each lamp

• Insignificant pressure loss

• Inlet / outlet connections using unions supplied along with fastening lugs.

Easy to install and maintain, the range features models to suit different pool sizes, each designed for long service life with lamps lasting up to 13,000 hours.

So, if a more natural disinfection system with low operating costs sounds appealing for either commercial or domestic pool clients, AstralPool UK are able to offer a range of UV water treatment solutions.

FOR PERFECTLY CLEAN AND CLEAR WATER, CERTIKIN HAVE AN ANSWER

Certikin UV systems have been specifically designed to help prevent green water in swimming pools and swimming ponds. They work by emitting 254nm UV light inside a sealed tube, damaging and destroying single celled algae which cause green water. Lower pressure UV-C breaks down

monochloramines, reducing the associated symptoms and the amount of chemicals required, allowing the pool to be operated at a lower free chlorine level.

They are fully serviceable which means both the lamp and control box can be replaced should there be a problem. The control box uses less plastic to produce and the serviceability means less plastic waste. Additionally, the control box is fitted to a bracket which allows the unit to be wall mounted. There are seven models available in the new range for pools between 15,000 (15m3) and 150,000 (150m3) litres.

In addition to their own brand UV products, Certikin also offer the Blue Lagoon Xpose UV-C system.

The first stand-up pool UV system designed specifically for domestic above-ground and small in-ground pools, the Xpose UV-C features a plug and play concept that’s powerful, affordable and easy to install.

It’s a system which means that owners of all types of domestic pools can enjoy the fantastic benefits of UV-C technology. Its 42W lamp offers a staggering 9,000 hours.

Constructed from a high-quality copolymer, its high technical specification means it can operate within 1°C to 40°C; has a maximum flow of 15m3/h – 250 L/min and a maximum pressure of 1 bar – 14.5psi.

ELECRO SYSTEM PROVIDES THE ULTIMATE INTERNAL REFLECTION

Available through leading distributors including Certikin, Lighthouse, Plastica and SCP, the H.R.UV-C is one is of the newest members to the Elecro family.

Designed using the latest knowledge of highly reflective reactor casing materials, the H.R.UV-C features the highest UV reflective index on the market thus optimising the UV-C radiation and dramatically increasing its performance.

This is achieved thanks to the E-PTFE reach chamber which is extremely repellent, maintaining UV reflectivity. Up to 95% reflection amplifies the exposure of microorganisms to UV.

It’s win, win as no harmful gases or by-products are produced in the process and the powerful sterilisation eliminates the smell of chlorine. It is highly effective in neutralising bacteria, viruses, algae and fungi that traditional chemicals cannot.

The inside surface casing is extremely repellent and therefore self-cleaning.

Intelligent electronics indicate when the lamps are not producing sufficient UV-C and need to be changed, ensuring the unit is always performing optimally.

The H.R.UV-C is compatible with, and complements, all traditional treatment methods including; chlorine, bromine, active oxygen / hydrogen peroxide and salt electrolysis. A narrow and extended chamber ensures maximum exposure to the powerful UV-C. It is easy to use and install, can be retrofitted to any existing pool system – a self-cleaning system, reducing the need for maintenance.

The intelligent lamp life indicator signals when the lamps are no longer producing sufficient UV-C and need to be changed, ensuring the unit is always performing optimally and has a long lamp life, up to 9,000 hours.

The H.R.UV-C is available in three sizes: Mini (30m3), Single (55m3) and Double (110m3) and in three models − Standard, Classic and Pro.

PURIQ – A 100% ECOFRIENDLY UV WATER PURIFIER

powerful UV-C light with a wavelength of exactly 253.7nm that kills practically all bacteria, viruses, algae and moulds. Using a UV light provides non-chemical disinfection, enabling effective primary control over waterborne bacteria, which can benefit both public and private pools.

This results in optimal purification, reducing the need by 80% of chlorine and other chemical usage. The PURIQ UV-C system, with its 100% eco-friendly operation, provides more natural, healthier water. The extra wide SAE 316 stainless steel housing extends the time the water is exposed to the strong UV-C radiation while also minimising the pressure drop as the water passes through. Not only is the system better for the pool and pool user, but the environment benefits too. There is a significantly reduced number of toxic by-products produced by the UV purifier ensuring that the end response is a cleaner, safer environment for all.

Thanks to the polished interior, there is virtually no adhesion of contaminants to the walls, which boosts the effectiveness of the UV-C radiation by a further 35%. The PURIQ UV-C water purifier contains intelligent electronics that signals an alert when it is time to replace the lamp, which ensures that the unit is always operating at peak efficiency and the water is clear. This way, the customer always has a perfectly working device they can rely on.

Water Treatments That Provide Peace Of Mind

Providing a clean and safe water experience is a must for any pool or spa owner or operator and whilst traditional methods are still routinely used, newer technologies have gained in popularity. UV aside, there are numerous other water treatments and systems available which tick all the necessary boxes to ensure water of the highest quality. With choices suitable for a variety of settings, we highlight some of the options

For many across the UK, life has never been busier or more stressful. There’s always something to see or attend to, in fact there’s a constant flow of ‘things’ that we all have to plan for and try and manage, meaning opportunities to feel fully in control and relax appear to be increasingly scarce.

When it comes to pools and spas, their enjoyment should be maximised and any stress or worry minimised and that’s true for owners and operators in both commercial and residential settings.

So what can be done to ease the burden of ensuring the water is in the best possible condition, is safe and of the highest quality? Well a good place to start is by implementing the right products and systems for safe and effective water treatment to provide day-today peace of mind.

Commercial facilities are pretty well set when it comes to procedures and utilising automatic water treatment options and with domestic consumers becoming increasingly more savvy, now is a good time to show them how to fully relax and maximise the enjoyment of their wet leisure investment without worrying about the water found within it!

QUANTUM HARNESSES TECHNOLOGY FOR CLEAR AND SPARKLING WATER

A prime focus of scientific advances today is ceramic nano crystal technology and it is this which is used in the Quantum to create one of the most powerful forms of sterilisation – photocatalytic oxidation. Manufactured by Elecro Engineering and available from Certikin, Lighthouse, Plastica and SCP UK, Quantum eliminates contaminants leaving water fresh and clean.

Easy to install, Quantum gives peace of mind as dangerous organisms such as cryptosporidium and adenoviruses are destroyed by the photocatalytic process ensuring pool users are kept safe. Several natural processes occur as the pool water passes through the unit with only pure water returning to the pool.

As a result of the processes occurring inside the Quantum, including the production of hydroxyl radicals, the treated water is free of all oil-based substances such as sun creams and all organics including urea are totally removed resulting in sparkling water. Quantum also reduces the need for chemicals in the pool and helps eliminate the smell of chlorine.

Once installed, this cost-effective solution requires no maintenance; it is equipped with an intelligent lamp life indicator so when the UV lamp which initiates the photocatalytic reaction needs to be replaced this is displayed. Quantum is compatible

with both salt and sea water and is available in three sizes. Choose from Mini (35m3), Single (65m3) or Double (130m3) to meet the specific needs of the pool’s capacity.

Ten Years On: Why Professional Pool Plant Training And Partnerships Matter More Than Ever

In this first Opinion piece of 2026, Dave Candler, CEO at STA, shares his thoughts on the importance of establishing and developing working partnerships to raise standards in pool plant management

This year marks ten years since I became CEO of STA. Over that decade, few areas of aquatic operations have evolved as significantly, or carried as much responsibility, as pool plant management. While the fundamentals of safe water remain constant, the context in which plant operators now work has become far more complex and consequential.

Pool operators today face a convergence of pressures. Public health expectations are rightly high, with continued focus on risks such as Cryptosporidium and wider water quality management. At the same time, rising energy costs, sustainability targets and ageing pool infrastructure have moved plant operation firmly into strategic territory. Decisions made in the plant room now affect safety, compliance, reputation, financial viability and long-term participation.

Any pool-related outbreak, regardless of scale, can have serious consequences. People can become ill, facilities may be forced to close and confidence can be lost overnight. For operators, the impact often extends into regulatory scrutiny, financial penalties and lasting reputational damage. Rebuilding trust with customers, parents and communities can take far longer than addressing the original issue. These realities underline why competence, judgement and preparedness matter so deeply.

Having worked in leisure centres and as a STA tutor for more than 25 years, when I became CEO of STA one of my clear ambitions was to strengthen partnershipworking across the sector. Pool plant safety, workforce competence and public confidence are not challenges that can be solved by any single organisation. From the outset, my focus was on bringing people together and ensuring that standards, guidance and training reflected the realities faced by operators on the ground.

Against this backdrop, it is worth reflecting on how far the sector has come. When STA developed the UK’s first professionally accredited qualification for swimming pool

plant training in 2005, plant competence was often treated as an informal, behindthe-scenes responsibility. Training was inconsistent, knowledge was frequently inherited rather than assessed and the risks associated with water systems were not always fully understood. By introducing a regulated, professionally accredited pathway, STA helped lead the professionalisation of pool plant operations, setting clearer expectations around competence, accountability and standards across the sector.

Today, there is far greater recognition that managing pool water systems is a specialist role requiring professional training and ongoing development. This shift has been driven by partnership, shared learning and a collective commitment to raising standards.

Over many years, STA has worked closely with organisations including SPATA, BSPF and PWTAG, alongside workforce and sector bodies such as CIMSPA and ukactive. By bringing together technical expertise, operational experience and professional standards, the sector has been able to develop clearer guidance, evolve qualifications at pace with workforce requirements and strengthen codes of practice around specific facilities and pool environments.

That same commitment to shared learning extends to STA’s long-standing relationship with Swimming Pool News, providing a trusted platform to share insight and explore emerging issues and technologies.

One of the most significant changes over the past decade has been the widening range of environments in which pool plant knowledge is required. Alongside traditional public pools, we now see purpose-built swim schools, temporary pool installations, coldwater plunge pools and advanced interactive water play areas. The growth of the private swim school market is also significant, with operators often working from hired facilities and needing sufficient understanding to recognise issues and protect swimmers.

This changing landscape reinforces why professional training must support clear role

definition, informed decision-making and confidence as responsibilities and operating contexts evolve. Over many years, STA has established itself as a leading provider of regulated pool plant qualifications, supporting individuals at every stage of responsibility within wet leisure facilities.

At the pinnacle of this pathway sits STA’s Pool Plant Operations qualification, the highest level of regulated training available for those responsible for the management and maintenance of swimming pools, spas and interactive water features. Aligned with the most up-to-date industry standards and meeting CIMSPA’s employer-led professional standard for pool plant operatives, it reflects the reality that modern plant operation requires a comprehensive, informed skillset spanning safety, efficiency and sustainability.

That wider spirit of collaboration and professional development is increasingly visible across the sector. As we will see at SPATEX this year, shared industry hubs, seminar programmes and cross-organisational CPD opportunities reflect a growing recognition that the challenges facing pool plant operations are best addressed collectively.

The same collaborative approach is also shaping how the sector responds to areas of risk, including chemical handling and incident prevention, as discussed elsewhere in this issue.

For STA, this focus on professional training and continuous development is inseparable from our charitable purpose. For babies, children and adults to learn to swim safely, the water itself must be safe. Pool plant competence underpins participation, confidence and access.

After ten years as CEO, experience has shown that professional training, continuous development and strong partnership working are firmly established as the foundations of effective pool plant safety. The challenges facing operators will continue to evolve, but by investing in people, sharing expertise and maintaining high standards together, the sector can meet them responsibly and ensure swimming remains a safe, trusted and inclusive life skill for generations to come.
