WE CAUGHT UP WITH SOME OF THE TEAM TO GET THEIR THOUGHTS ON UNSW AND THE APRS SOCIETY!
What has been your favourite course so far?
VALERIE
My favourite course would be Current Debates in Media (MDIA3097). It was super fun learning about current social, cultural and political issues in the media. The topics and concepts you learn about are all ‘trending topics’ and are relevant and applicable to your own life. It helped broaden my perspective and challenged me to re-evaluate my values and beliefs of the world around me.
What do you love about APRS? No doubt it’s a huge change moving from school to university, but the people you surround yourself with make a world of difference. APRS isn’t just a society full of the best people and friends, but it’s a group that offers you a wealth of support and guidance in achieving your goals and dreams.

What is one piece of advice you can give to first years? Get involved! I regret waiting until third year to put myself out there — joining a society and volunteering opens up so many opportunities for social, professional and individual growth that I would never have found elsewhere.
ROBERT
What do you enjoy about uni?
TERESA
I love how uni has allowed me to open up, through joining societies, like APRS, where I can meet amazing people and make lasting friendships. I was overwhelmed at O-week during my first year, afraid to start conversations. But during one of my first lectures, my lecturer gave us some wise advice, “instead of asking yourself “why?”, ask “why not?”. Events and subcommittees are easy ways to meet like-minded people and people from all walks of life.
What has uni taught you about starting a career? Uni has not only provided me with the theory and practical components of my degree but has equipped me with the skills to ace interviews and sell myself to potential employers. To gain the confidence to get your foot in the door, I highly recommend the professional development and internship courses UNSW offers.

I How do I smoothly transition from high school to university? It might be a difficult transition at first but the best way is to be active on campus! Joining societies and attending their events will help you connect with other first-year students and make new friends. Joining up to a peer mentoring program is also a great way to get guidance from older students in your faculty and meet other students in your cohort. Apart from this, asking your lecturer and tutor questions is essential if you are struggling with content or if you need help with the tutorial questions.
What do I need to bring to university and how to prepare for the first day of classes? It depends on your preference of study, but for inperson classes, it is recommended to bring a device such as a laptop or tablet to access lecture notes and readings. For more practical classes bringing a notebook and a pen is great for equations and drawing diagrams! To prepare for classes it is important to have finished your weekly readings before your tutorials or labs to be able to understand the concepts and participate in class discussion. External Members External members are the general student public and includes everyone who shows up to the events and follows the content the club puts out.
Internal Members Alternatively, you can apply to join a club’s internal team! All UNSW clubs are run by students, for students and as such require passionate members to host the events external members get to enjoy. Joining as an internal member opens opportunities to develop your soft-skills, create a portfolio of work, gain experience working in a team and of course, create new lasting friendships with other members.
Most society positions held are accredited by AHEGS which will show on your graduation statement demonstrating how you were able to make your mark at UNSW.
APRS will be opening up our Subcommittee Recruitment Applications shortly. Positions in Marketing, Publications, Careers and Events portfolios will be available which we strongly recommend all students to apply, regardless of experience or degree. Societies are an amazing and accessible way to start your journey at UNSW and we hope to see you around this year whether that be at our external events or as part of our new team!
