Naya Description

This indian themed boutique hotel, Naya, features bright colors and a modern take on traditional patterning and typography. The hotel seeks to bring traditional Indian culture and style to North Park, San Diego. Targeting middle income men and women between the ages of 28 and 45 who love to travel, but might not have the funds to take an extravagant international vacation. There is a very heavy use of patterning in Naya’s identity, to reflect on traditional Indian patterns. Different weights and styles of Neutraface are used as a modern take on Indian hand painted signage. Naya is oriented around social interaction, so all of the tables are banquet style, and cushions fill the lobby so that guests can sit and talk with new people. All of the stationery and receipts are printed on recycled materials to help the company stay eco-friendly.

’ Jelly Description

What better way to get kids excited about eating right than with music, lively characters and tasty snacks? Jam n’ jelly combines all of these for a fun school fundraiser. If children sell enough jelly they earn a professional drum circle who will comes to their school and perform and teach them to play drums. These jellies include fun colors, cool cut-out typography and a unique drumshaped package that will attract elementary school kids. Each flavor comes with it’s own rockin’ fruit character who was designed by hand, using BIC pens, then vectorized and colored. The nutrition facts will appeal to parents as these jellies are made from 100% fruit preserves, with only 4g of natural sugar per tablespoon.

EXPLO Description

Exploration is the main theme of these National Geographic middle school textbooks. Each captivating cover portrays different methods of exploring; from vehicles to countries, to outer space. The images were crafted to challenge the viewer to explore their own minds. These textbooks needed to be whimsical and fun, with crazy colors, and interesting images. This is balanced by a clean use of typography that adds a touch of sophistication. I went with the fonts Ranger and Wisdom script because they look very professional when used together, but they still have a fun vibe.

WALK T DA Description

The Old Globe aims to scare audiences this season with Walk the Dark Side. This group of 3 plays will have patrons sitting on their edge of their seats. These productions were brought to the Old Globe in an attempt to lure more 20-35 year old adults to the theatre. I wanted to make the collateral for this project feel like a ransom note, or a memo left behind on the desk of a mental hospital. To accomplish this I used typefaces that looked hand-written and others that were more jumbled, and angular. I also added some grunge textures such as a scratched out chalkboard, or a taped up letter to give it a more chaotic feel.

Flora Description

A trendy gardening company, Flora, sells everything from flower seeds to watering cans and tools. I wanted to create a strong design that would stand out on a shelf and appeal to women between the ages of 18 and 35, with a love of gardening. The trendy, bold patterning incorporated into this project ties all of the pieces together and motivates consumers to purchase the full line of branded items. The flower girls were designed using simple outlines, and repeating the patterning used in the other branded items. I wanted to limit the color palette to very natural, floral colors, so that the Flora products would stand out against the other multi-colored products on display. The paper used for the seed packets is natural, and can be planted right along with the seeds that come inside.

VITILIG Description

Growing up with a skin disorder that makes you look different from all of your friends is a really tough thing for a kid to deal with. With this project I wanted to reach out and let children know they are not alone. This is a project for kids and parents of any age, that want more information or advice about how to deal with their spots. My goal was to make the children’s cards fun and personal, avoiding the sterile brochure they picked up at the dermatologist’s office. This was accomplished by using s variety of bold colors, fun hand-done typography, and personal photographs of me growing up with Vitiligo. As for the items for the parents, I wanted them to seem serious enough that they would trust the information inside, but still make it fun to read. I accomplished this by using the slightly curved typeface Aller, along with painterly textures and illustrated portraits. This project’s heroin, Swirl Girl, is a superhero character that I came up with when I was younger then had to reinvent to take part in this project.
