A festival of language and literary inspired events
26 October – 17 November 2013
Words over Waltham Forest will host language and literary inspired events - on the street, in libraries, cafes, pubs and galleries from 26 October - 17 November. The festival aims to encourage people to get writing and reading. Local authors, artists and community groups will bring life to all forms of communication and expression at spoken word events, workshops, exhibitions, and readings through the language of words, poetry, theatre, dance, art and song. The festival is a partnership between Waltham Forest Council and Artillery, Waltham Forest Arts in Education Network, Learning Disability Experience and Apex Arts. We have developed a packed programme of events through the vision and creativity of the many creative groups, authors, artists, poets and performers already working in the Borough. London Lines at Words over Waltham Forest Festival Over the course of the summer, poets from London’s boroughs were invited to come up with their personal vision of our 21st-century capital city for London Lines. London Lines was a Jaybird Live Literature and Southbank Centre collaboration, part of the London Literature Festival and the Festival of Neighbourhood. Their poems were then handed over to artists – muralists, film-makers, architects and more – who in turn created their own visual interpretations. The Waltham Forest poem was written by Joelle Taylor and was wrapped around apples sold from a fruit stall. We’ve brought Joelle’s poetic celebration of Walthamstow back home and throughout the Words over Waltham Forest festival lucky fruit buyers may find this precious poem lovingly wrapped around their fruit. Keep your eyes peeled. ‘To Understand the Seed is to Understand the Forest ‘On Hoe Street a woman irons her smile to wear next Sunday Hangs love letters on the line to dry Beside fluttering film negatives And a greyhound that no longer needs to run: it has arrived.’ Joelle Taylor Joelle will be performing her poem at the festival launch event at Walthamstow Central Library on Friday 25 October from 5 – 7pm where other performers will include Lammas and Buxton Schools with Spoken Word Educator Cat Brogan, “Creating A Buzz” drama students from George Mitchell School and music students from Rushcroft Foundation School. Waltham Forest Arts in Education Network and Learning Disability Experience (formerly Waltham Forest Mencap) will also unveil their exhibition of artwork entitled ‘This is Me’, exploring the theme of identity and celebrating the diversity of our community.

Empowering our Young Girls - a panel debate Waltham Forest College Forest Road E17 4JB A panel debate with “Secrets of the Henna Girl” author, Sufiya Ahmed, and members of Waltham Forest Young Advisors and The Youth Independent Advisory Group. The debate will be chaired by Cllr Clare Coghill. Female empowerment is about equality of opportunity for our
daughters, sisters and friends. “Secrets of the Henna Girl” is a book for young adults which tells the story of a teenage girl who, like many a sixteen year old, dreams of finding true love, having fun and waiting for her dreaded exam results but whose future life choices are threatened by duty to protect her father’s honour. Sufiya’s fiction explores the complex issues of forced marriage and female equality through the telling of an individual’s story. In 2010 Sufiya set up the BIBI Foundation, a non-profit organisation, to arrange visits to the Houses of Parliament for underprivileged school children. She believes passionately in opportunities for all - especially young girls. Sufiya will be joined by a panel to discuss some of the challenges young girls face in first daring to dream about life’s choices and then fulfilling their potential - finding equality at home, at school and at work. What better for a festival celebrating writing, than love letters; not just the normal kind but love letters written and left for strangers to find? Good ideas, it seems, have no boundaries. Last year, two guys in Brighton began GlobalLoveLetters.com after finding a hand-written, anonymous postcard (one of 200, individually penned and given away on Valentines Day by a young couple, as they later discovered). Meanwhile, over in New York, a young woman had started writing and leaving inspiring letters for whoever may find them; tucked, perhaps, in the seat of a Subway carriage or library book. Her actions inspired a US movement now Words Over Waltham Forest

with voluntary writers across the States. Both websites have gone global and Waltham Forest is the first London borough to get involved! And so can you… Letters are hand-written, openly addressed to whoever finds it, and written to be universally inspirational - perhaps about finding gratitude, hope or accessing inner wisdom. You will find writing desk stands throughout the festival at Hale End, North Chingford and Walthamstow Libraries where you can read some of the letters already written, find out how you can request letters for people in need, and join in by writing letters yourself. Plus, www.GlobalLoveLetters.com will also be making an appearance at one of the Saturday events. Not to be missed! So make sure you check online for more details. Let’s get writing!

There will be prints, photography, drawing, embroidery, graphic design and street art by selected local artists. Word on the Street suggests the exhibition’s literary context as well as nodding to the gallery’s location on Hoe Street, one of the main thoroughfares in the borough. Love Cake & The Idiom L’Hirondelle Coffee Shop, 160 Hoe Street E17 4QH Hand painted tiles utilising the motif of ‘Sign Language’ - the work mocks the popular idiomatic proverb ‘you can’t have your cake and eat it too’. [IDIOM - a: the manner of expression characteristic of or peculiar to a language, b: a specialized vocabulary used by a group of people, c: the characteristic artistic style of an individual, school, period, etc.] Sign Language, like Sculpture, are both art and idiom, and in their purpose share the desire, need, and in some cases, the struggle to communicate. The drawings on tiles differ from previous work in this medium (see my website, www.steveyscullion.com or ‘Words over Walthamstow’ in ‘Finamore’ shop window, Orford rd, E17.) in that the work is more pictorial in its format and attempts to be more site specific to embrace the cosmopolitan nature of L’Hirondelle Coffee Shop.
