Overview

1.5.  175 Burnley Street, Streetscape Design - Professional Work - ASPECT Studios , Melbourne , Australia

The City of Yarra , Urban Design Strategy outlines that ‘there is a deficiency of public open space and there is limited opportunity to provide new open space and encourages promotion of active edges around and use of small urban spaces.’ (City of Yarra, Urban Design Strategy June 2011, Neighborhood Street Space, pg. 18)

This Landscape Design Report has been prepared by ASPECT Studios in collaboration with Jackson Clements Burrows Architects. It sets forth the guiding principles for the landscape design to the public external spaces of the development at 175 Burnley Street, Richmond.

The corner of Burnley and Murphy Street provides an exciting opportunity to address the council’s conundrum with regard to streetscape and public open space provision for a steadily increasing population, and hopes to demonstrate how underutilised streetscapes can help activate the precinct, creating spaces that the community can embrace and enjoy. nd enjoy.

Burnley Street 11has SEMI a wide (approx.TREE 6m) TO footpath, and IMMEDIATE to break upLANDSCAPE the large expanse MATURE PROVIDE IMPACT of asphalt, we propose to introduce a limited amount of porphyry stone paving to connect the new corner precinct with the internal foyer of the building. The aim is to break the disconnect between the two and allow the spaces to feel unified and provide the feeling of connection between interior and exterior encouraging movement and usage of the internal and external spaces by the community. Overall the proposal seeks to make a generous contribution to the community of Burnley and Richmond by providing a much needed new open space for gathering, meeting and socialising.

1.10.  Designing Resilience in Asia - Competition Entry, Post Graduate Landscape Architecture Studio 2015, Melbourne, Australia

Project: ‘Desiging Resilience in Asia’ was a Landscape Design entry for the symposium and competition conducted by the National University of Singapore. In order to promote innovative responses to disaster situatons as well as the engagement of society through design, the competition seek to endanger Asian communities’ resilience in the light of natural disasters. Brief: The proposal utilised Urban Design and Landscape Architecture to endow , support, amplify and maintain a community’s reciliency in light of a natural disaster event, namely a typhoon, and it’s associated effects , i.e. high winds, storm surge, flooding, and excessive precipitation. Type : Landscape, Urban Design, Community Development Year: Sem 1, Master of Landscape Architecture

Xingxing Harbour Village is home to a community reliant on fishing and farming to generate much of their food and income, however, the success of their township and its ability to grow and prosper well into the future rests on a series of very delicate balances within their environment. Climate change and increased extreme weather condition means the typhoons frequenting Xinging Harbour Village could have majourly impact on this delicate balance at an increasing level if not addressed. In an area with such a fragile ecosystem maintaining and strengthening these equilibriums increases the resilience of the village.

12

Design The economics of any township is of utmost importance to its survival. Given the focus on agriculture, fishing and the lifestyles that centre around these industries the design aims to enhance these aspects while addressing any future of the village. As a result this project focuses on reducing pollution, increasing fresh water retention and minimising storm surge in order to reduce salt water incursion and flood damage. All of this is achieved through the introduction of various innovative forms of infrastructure Idea Water is the lynchpin of society and effects every aspet of how communities function. Many issues faced by communities can be solved by paying close attention to water. This design maintains and increase the fresh water table by introducing a series of interventions including a port, wetlands and rainwater harvesting instead systems. All of which act in turn to strengthen the site’s environmental sustainability, prevent salt water incursion and improve the health of the nearby oceans, which results in increases to the availability of food for the village, thereby increasing their economic output.

1.11.  West Wimmera, Gateway to Mount Arapiles - Post Graduate Landscape Architecture Studio 2015, Melbourne, Australia

Project: ‘Native Seed Bank + Chef Residency and Bush Food Production, Goroke Brief: This project focuses on developing comminity based and run Seed Banks which will house rare Bush Food plant species and other endangered vegetation. The seeds harveseted will be used to revegetate the green corridors between Horsham and Goroke, and the main street of Goroke primarily. The Green Corridor will mainly house endangered plant and trees specific to the region. The revegetation in the main street of Goroke will be home to well known bush food varities which can be used in the Chef Residency program proposed at Goroke. The Bush Food grown in goroke will also be processed to make Organic food products to sell and generate employment for the locals and for economic benefits of the region. Year: Sem 2, Master of Landscape Architecture

The main street of Goroke has a number of buildings which are either abandoned or in a dilapidated state. The proposed intervention are in the following three buildings . 1. The Butter Factory 2. Workshop adjacent to the Butter Factory 3. Abandoned shed adjacent to the Goroke Pub The aim is to reuse and revitalize the existing infrastructure and make the main street of Goroke more active and inturn create economical benefits.

14

TheProcess Step1 Establish the Seed Bank and collect the necessary seeds and plant material to begin the revegetion. The Seed collection happens by going on seed expeditions to identify and obtain the seeds from surrounding regions. The seeds collected go through necessary processing before they are used for revegetation. The seeds are also stored and packaged to be sold in the Organic Store Adjacent to the Seed Bank . Step2 The Organic Store with a food processing unit which functions based on the harvest season of the bush foods process, store and package the products obtained from the Bush Foods. The aim of this store to engage and provide employment to the local people . The income generated inturn will be used to expand and propogate the bush food knowledge and research . Step3 The establishment of the Chef Residency Program which happens thrice a year will invite upcoming food critics and chefs from around the country. The program will explore and develope menu for the Goroke Pub which focuses on the Bush Foods. The Goroke Pub will serve the newly developed cuisines in addition to the already exisitng menu. The property adjacent to the Chef Residency Program houses a Green House and Farm where fresh produce is grown to be used for the Residency Program as well as the Goroke Pub. 1.12.  Productive Urban Waterscapes - RMIT University, Post Graduate Thesis 2016, Melbourne, Australia

Project: Productive Urban Waterscapes, Linear River Park The primary aim of the demonstration was to create a strategy for a linear park along the river edge adjacent to Toorak and Burnley regions of Melbourne. The programs were designated based on the user group and the typologies were to be monitored by Melbourne water, Parks Victoria, Yarra River Keepers and the local council. The ribbon strip was further categorised based on the land ownership and the modular typologies proposed respected this. The modular typologies that are repetitive were laid out keeping in mind the necessity to filter the water and to encourage growth of the local flora and fauna. Through this intervention the linear park aimed at reclaiming the land that is otherwise being encroached by the residences and utilise it as public space.
