WELCOME 2017 is a year of change. Yet in times of change, one thing remains a reassuring constant; our fascination with housing and our love of our own home. It never ceases to surprise me that those four walls can literally effect and enhance our mood. Whether it’s the place that gives us the energy to start each day afresh, or providing a welcoming sanctuary in which to completely unravel the knots from the days stresses – our homes are places in which we can totally be ourselves and express all areas of our personality. They’re the place in which we raise our family, celebrate with friends, commiserate with loved ones, and enjoy life’s greatest and most poignant achievements. It’s no wonder we care so much about them. In my 13 years of compiling the Auckland Home Show, I still get a real thrill in seeing the sheer numbers of visitors that engage with our exhibitors over the five days. It remains the largest exhibition event of its kind in

Australasia, and every year our team works tirelessly to bring you the very best exhibitors and ideas to explore. From interior design trends and products, to renovation – new builds, future home technologies to landscaping ideas and gardening solutions; every year I look forward to seeing what’s new and seeing just how much effort our wonderful exhibitors put into their displays. Personally, at this year’s show, I’ll be on the lookout for new dining chairs as my current ones have been ruined by my much beloved cat who insists on using them as scratching posts, despite a plethora of other specially purchased alternatives. And given my love of my backyard, I’m definitely heading to our newly formed Outdoor Ideas area to pick up some landscaping ideas and products in readiness for what’ll hopefully be a long hot kiwi summer. I’m extremely proud of the 2017 Auckland Home Show, with more than 500 exhibitors over 5 days of everything and anything to do with the home. I know there is absolutely something here for everyone – I look forward to seeing you there! Amanda Magnus General Manager Exhibitions and Events NZ

MONDRIAN FRIDGE Smeg’s Fab refrigerators are such an eye-catching display of vivid colour, classic design and texture that we always look forward to seeing what they’ll come up with next! In a range that boasts over 20 coloured or patterned versions, for 2017 Smeg pays tribute to the era of Neoplasticism with its famous pictorial abstract façade. While this modernist version is unfortunately not for sale, you can still pick yourself up a Fab 28 to suit your personality from the Jones Family Business Smeg area during the Show!

The Outside landscape panels and screens are designed for privacy as well as being a beautifully decorative part of your homes landscape. Their laser cut metal screens are finished in a variety of powder coat colours and can be presented as feature walls or facades to suit either indoor or outdoor setting. Fully customisable, you could even opt for an elaborate front gate design to wow your visitors on arrival.

The Red Dot Design Award winning Smeg Espresso Machine is a statement classic in its 50s retro styling. Available in pastel blue, cream, black and our favourite – red, it’s the benchtop coffee machine for the proud home barista. With a drip tray that includes a clever little indicator telling you when it needs emptying, and generous 1litre water capacity, this beautiful piece of Italian design would be a welcome addition on any kitchen bench top.

This recent bout of cooler weather got us longing for the summer holidays. If you’re planning to head out of Auckland after Christmas, then be safe in the knowledge that your home is well protected. CleverLoop is an affordable and smart security camera system that sends instant video alerts of unusual activity directly to your mobile phone. You can also live view your property wherever you are using indoor and outdoor WiFi cameras, so you can check in on things, then free up your mind to genuinely relax!

While we might not all be Heston Blumenthal on the BBQ, we can certainly give it a go now with the amazing Everdure by Heston Blumenthal range designed in collaboration with Shriro and the world renown chef himself. Available in both charcoal and gas models to allow you the flexibility of outdoor dining, smoking and barbecuing. Our pick is the mighty HUB, ready to cook in 10 minutes thanks to its Fast Flame Ignition System. A must have for your deck area this summer!

Interior insights We are officially on the rundown to end of 2017 – though we’re not entirely sure how this year’s getting past us so quickly, we’re here and we’re incredibly excited to showcase what 2018 has instore for you design-wise at the Auckland Home Show.

Interior trends for 2018 are chic, inspiring, inviting and above all achievable. Texture is essential; whether that’s achieved via the surface of your walls, your lounge suite or smaller additional furnishings; your goal is to create a richly sensational living experience.

Carissa noughts and crosses gold $39.99

Subtle Sheen

Gold Amalfi wall organiser $99.99

As Amanda Neill of Designworx will tell you, metallic textures and finishes are here to stay. “Aged brass is a huge trend,” she says. “Polished brass and bronze bring a warmth, glamour and regality to any interior that would be difficult to achieve by using their matt counterparts”. Perfect for door knobs, drawer pulls, cushions, tables, light fittings – you’re only limited by your imagination.

Luxurious Lounging

Midas cushion grey $79.99

Inviting and simple shapes that emanate a ‘come sit down, put your feet up’ vibe is what you want to be looking for in your loungeroom revamp. Larger pieces of furniture that can be moved about, i.e. ottomans and chairs in rich warm fabrics like velvet should be on your must-have list. If a plush velvet couch is not practical in your home, create some comfortable opulence through jewel toned cushions and throws.

TREND ALERT! Magical Marble As our infatuation of metallics holds strong – so does our passion for marble. From tabletops to flooring, decorative pieces to countertops; the allure of marble set in amongst an industrial metallic edge like brass, or paired with warm toned wood, makes it irresistible. This natural stone has many colour variations as types available, from white/grey to limestone or green marble, so really your choices are endless!

round marble and wood platter $71.99

marble cheese slicer $24.99

Hide and Seek

For a wilder take on the textured trend, think about incorporating a faux hide into your homes interior. These can bring in a sense of eclecticism and exoticism that not much else can; plus they’re a total classic for adding another layer of interesting texture to a room. You don’t have to go with the real deal – there are loads of amazing faux choices available and they’re relatively childfriendly; wearing well, and repelling stains better than silk or wool rugs can.

12 Auckland Home Show 2017

Colouring in Of all the trends we look at, colour continues to hold its place at the top of our list. After all, it sets the tone for what furniture we buy, what decor we invest in, and the overall mood for the design year ahead. Some of the colour infusions from Resene that have caught our attention and imagination this year include:

Jewel Toned Rich gem-like shades encompass what this palette holds itself to. Amethyst, sapphire, emerald, ruby and more work together to envelope you into a richly glamourous space.

Cocooned Comfort Misty and Muted These are soft, simple colours to provide you with a sense of sanctuary and wellbeing, quite away from our technology overloaded minds. No bold, brash tones here – its softly muddied pastels and greys, echo the popular Scandinavian look of recent years.

In the way that the previous look is softly calming, this look helps you to retreat into a haven of darkly-toned security. Deep light absorbing colours like moody blues, deep charcoals and dense greens help to inject a sense of soulful introspection into the space of which they’re used with just a touch of drama.

Easy Neutrals If in doubt, neutrals retain their place as the ultimate crowd pleaser. Especially in a shared space with family it’s sometimes easier to let each member of the household add their own touch of creativity against a neutral and forgiving palette, in turn creating freedom for all!

Wanderlust This is about pure escapism; even if we can’t physically roam – our minds certainly can. Spicy colours, spring greens, plummy browns and sea blues create a nomadic palette that’s definitely not matchy matchy!

TREND ALERT! Passionate about paper As mentioned earlier, our love of wallpaper is still going strong. A well-designed space will often incorporate both paint and wallpaper into its design. Wallpaper is unique in that it has the wonderful ability to add colour, design, character – and importantly texture to a room that paint simply can’t always accomplish – and sometimes it even proves to be more cost-effective in the long run! Some of our favourite chic designs that are on trend and on show with Resene at this year’s Auckland Home Show include:

5 MINS WITH... AMANDA NEILL INTERIOR DESIGNER DESIGNWORX Award winning Interior Designer Amanda Neill is a highly skilled and recognised personality within the New Zealand and international design scenes. Her popular eclectic style has been published in numerous print titles and her knowledge of current and future design trends is extensive. We sat down with Amanda to uncover what inspires our Interior Design Queen, and what makes her tick… What inspires you on an everyday basis? Travelling to different cultures is a platform for my inspiration; then I see elements of these cultures being transposed into fabrics, furniture, rugs…it transports me back to a time and place. What is your design philosophy? For me, design is telling a story and bringing to life other people’s stories. It is about listening, then interpreting, then creating space which tells their story in a visual way. How do you approach a new project? I always ask my clients firstly how they want to feel in a space. Every decision on colour, finish and product chosen, comes in behind to support that feeling. The initial phase incorporates a lot of listening, sometimes you get two people who want different things, and the melding of these is very important. How would you describe your design style? I would say it is eclectic, quirky, and slight lux… I love to push boundaries and create a twist on things. The range of furniture I have designed and created is called EVOQUE and it’s exactly that. Describe your work in 5 words... Eclectic, quirky, luxurious, balanced, and innovative. Your favourite decor destination... Because we have a retail premise… everything we have in the showroom is a décor piece I love. They are pulled from so many different sources and suppliers, including my own designs. The Designworx Showroom is a place I love to wander through. You’ll never see me without... Jewellery! I love big statement earrings and necklaces. Success is... Having a client walk into their space and feel as if they have arrived…. Waking up in the morning and feeling grateful…. Being able to find balance and quality time to spend with family and friends doing things I love…. remembering to laugh a lot…enjoying whatever ride you are on. This quote from Hunter S Thompson resonates with me: “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and wellpreserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!” Advice I wish I had 5 years ago… I’ve been involved in this revolutionary programme for small business owners called Business Blueprint. The wisdom and advice that I have received from this has been invaluable in moving my business into a successful interior design practise, and I have followed Dale Beaumont’s advice on a daily basis to do this. “Progress is more important than perfection”. Book yourself in to attend Amanda’s FREE Interior Design Seminar “What’s Hot and How to Make It Work for You” at the Auckland Home Show as part of our Design, Renovate, Decorate Seminar Series.

URBAN SOUL Our kitchens are the key to how the rest of our home functions. Not only the space in which we prepare food, it’s where we choose to spend time with friends and family. For 2018 kitchen trends are focused on three elements; form, function and aesthetics. Here’s a snapshot of how you can stay ahead of the curve with kitchen design trends that are not only stylish, but have the potential to become timelessly classic.

Integrated Cooktops Cooktops integrated within the existing benchtop are in high demand. With the essential elements like burners and knobs built straight into the countertop, the end result is a workspace that’s maximised and clean up time considerably minimised. Whether your stove top is sunk down to be flush with your bench, gas hobs are built into your worktop or your induction hobs are completely aligned within your countertop, this is the ultimate streamlined look for a modern, minimalist kitchen hunter.

Limitlessly Linear

Handleless cabinetry remains a key kitchen trend for 2018; most have pull recesses or push-open mechanisms or electric fittings that open doors with the lightest touch. But sleek doesn’t always mean high shine; using grained wood or wood effect in natural tones is fast gaining in popularity.

Monochrome Zone Whether it’s entire cabinetry, worktops or appliances – a monochromatic palette of grey, black and white is your friend. Far from being bland and understated; think simple luxury, subtle and calming. Mix contrasting colours or textures to achieve a modern softness. Set against timber, stone or metal finishing, the rich hues of darker colours gives off a beautifully modern, elegant vibe.

TREND ALERT! Composting

People are looking to the internet for more inspiration on how to turn table scraps into plant food for their backyard says Pinterest. Our escalating concerns regarding our ecological footprint are often discussed given our clean-green kiwi image, and the good news is that it’s never too late to join in the composting conversation. Designed and made in NZ, the hungry bin is proving to be a fast and convenient way to compost kitchen food scraps. Its innovative kiwi design makes it super-efficient, processing up to 2.0 kilos of waste per day to make fantastic fertiliser and plant food – a winning formula for the family and the environment!

Auckland Home Show 2017 15

In the Raw Handmade products utilising granite, marble terrazzo, raw wood and concrete are proving popular due to their unique textural finish. In our busy tech filled can’t-stop, won’t-stop lives; having handmade ceramics, blown glass, woven rugs, stone benchtops and timber veneers are all things that subconsciously remind us of our connection to nature, whether we realise it or not.

Clear Space for a Clear Mind A clutter-free zone is a mindful trend; so cabinetry that allows you to have clearer worktops is the ultimate goal. Cupboards and drawers that hold a various array of compartments and shelves for everything from seasoning and oils to paper towels and tea bags, keep your food prepping area free of hassle. Plus, it helps to create the illusion of a larger kitchen space; so, if you’re one with a smaller kitchen it’s well worth having a tidy-up! Open storage also remains on trend, showcasing those items in your kitchen that catch your eye, or are used daily.

TO DINE FOR Triumphantly returning to the 2017 Auckland Home Show are the SMEG Cooking Theatre and ASKO Demo Kitchen. Showcasing the ultimate in SMEG and ASKO cooking appliances and proudly presented by the Jones Family Business; the SMEG Cooking Theatre and ASKO Demo Kitchen are hosted by some of New Zealand’s most celebrated kitchen talents including Simon Gault, Vanessa Baxter and Lauren Bavin.

SMEG COOKING THEATRE – In the Kitchen with Vanessa Baxter Vanessa Baxter of The Fearless Kitchen is a teacher, trainer, speaker and author of The Fearless Kitchen Cookbook. Recognisable from her famous Master Chef New Zealand experience, Vanessa has had many years of bringing people together over food from her charity and corporate workshops through to her regular appearances on radio and tv. How did you become interested in food? I’ve always had a passionate obsession with food. My parents are great cooks and my Grandmother used to create a laden filled buffet table for family gatherings. Later when studying in Melbourne, my work with a wellknown Aussie chef for extra income got me hooked on the food scene! Food became my life as I’ve travelled the globe and loved every experience. I feel very

blessed that I’ve been able to try food from a myriad of cultures. Describe your cooking style in 5 words… It’s about family and convenience What is the one recipe you’d suggest everyone learn how to make? Everyone should know how to cook pasta and how to make a basic tomato sauce. An occupational hazard is… Constant little cuts all over my hands which are often identified when I go to squeeze a lime and can feel every nick as it stings! Ouch! You’ll never see me without... A smile! I love to cook and I love to share my food with others, so I’m always happy and at home when cooking.

BACON MAPLE SCONES Try for yourself these mouth-wateringly delicious Bacon Maple Scones that Vanessa will be creating at the SMEG Cooking Theatre utilising the SMEG pyrolytic ovens! INGREDIENTS • 192g smoked streaky bacon, diced • 138g cold butter • 300g plain flour • 18g golden caster sugar • 7g baking powder • ¼ tsp bicarbonate of soda • 80ml maple syrup • 130ml buttermilk • 1 small egg, beaten METHOD 1 Place the diced bacon into a cold frying pan and turn the heat to medium. Cook until the bacon is golden and crisp. Scoop the pieces out with a slotted spoon and chill in the fridge until you’re ready to make the scones.

2 Cut the butter into cubes and keep cold, also in the fridge. 3 Heat your Smeg pyrolytic oven to 170C fan assist. 4 Put the flour, sugar, baking powder, bicarb and 1 tsp fine salt in a medium bowl. 5 Use a whisk to mix all the ingredients together properly. 6 Add the cold cubed butter and rub into the dry ingredients with your fingertips until you have small lumps. Toss in the cold bacon to coat with the flour, breaking up any clumps. 7 Stir in the maple syrup and buttermilk until a soft dough forms. 8 Put heaped tablespoon scoops of scone mix onto trays lined with baking paper, with enough space between them for each to expand. Brush each scone with egg wash. 9 Bake in batches for 15 minutes, then drizzle with a little more maple syrup and bake for a further 10 minutes until risen and golden. DELICIOUS!!!

ASKO DEMO KITCHEN – In the Kitchen with Lauren Bavin The “In House” Cooking Tutor for Kitchen Things, Lauren is a dab hand at demonstrating fabulous new cooking technologies, as well as running classes to help customers make the most of their new cooking appliances. A passionate foodie, Lauren has been interested in food and experimenting with both local and international cuisines for over 40 years. How did you become interested in food? I’ve been interested in food since I was a child and my mother let me loose in the kitchen to experiment with ingredients!

Later in life, my travels have inspired me to try flavours and ingredients from other cultures. Describe your cooking style in 5 words... Simple, fresh, flavourful, international and eclectic What is the one recipe you’d suggest everyone learn how to make? Pumpkin Soup. With this basic recipe, you can feed a family extremely cheaply! An occupational hazard is... Weight gain! You’ll never see me without... A recipe book or food magazine. I must own enough to fill a medium sized library! It’s turned into somewhat of an addiction.

CHICKEN DUMPLINGS We convinced Lauren to give us a sneak peek at what she’ll be creating within this year’s ASKO DEMO KITCHEN – here’s

her finger-lickin’ recipe for Chicken Dumplings, utilising the incredible ASKO steam ovens, induction cooktop and domino volcano gas cooktop. A RETURN TO THE ORGANIC Heading into the bathroom the trend leading into 2018 is a return to and rediscovery of a more natural, more organic feeling in this private sanctuary. A simple combination of clean colours, seamless lines and clear, practical arrangement of your bathroom (with a dollop of elegance thrown in for good measure) makes for a contemporary classic.

rooms, tapware in aged brass or rose gold is and goes wonderfully well against the backdrop of stone or wood. If you’re not feeling the brassy vibe, consider a matte black or even pewter option – both look stunning set against your modern, boldly minimalist cabinetry.

Kohler Stand 403 (Hall 3/4)

Timelessly Tactile

While porcelain basin vanities will always have their place, the shift is now towards a stronger connection with nature through beautifully carved stone basins set in against the warmth of wood and other natural materials to create a more modernistic, homely composition.

Simple statement cabinetry brings an understated glamour to your bathroom, especially in navy or muted black. Classic hexagonal and subway tiling has undergone a revamp to give your space more of a modern lift – but for even a bit more interest, pair it up with a monochromatic palette on the floor for some serious visual impact.

Methven Stand 340 (Hall 3/4)

Dark Mood

If grey sounds a little dull, in reality it can be a beautifully rich and warming colour with an endless variety of shades and hues. Placed against matt, neutral or nude colours, using dark tones in your bathroom will create a space that is moody or tranquil, elegant or dynamic. There are no high shine, bright tiles and surfaces here!

Tile Warehouse Stand 455 (Hall 3/4)

Living large on a small scale

With our growing population continuing its migration to smaller urban dwellings, so too is the design of the bathroom. The focus has moved from larger, oversized bathtubs to perfectly formed bathroom spaces that are both intimate and functional in their design. Make no mistake, there’s no compromise on comfort and style – rather a calm elegance in form and practicality.

Muted Elegance

Bathroom fixtures take their cue from the 70s – albeit in a far more stylish way. While our love of metallic is not new in bath-

Three times the kitchen inspiration at the Jones Family Business Stand The Jones Family Business have stepped up to another level this year, challenging their partner designers to create the most surprising, inspiring kitchen designs they’ve ever produced for the Auckland Home Show. Their intention? To show how their amazing range of appliances can be incorporated into the most adventurous of kitchens and how much pleasure can be had by breaking out of your comfort zone! With this in mind, Carlielle Kitchens were given the task of designing the Smeg Designer Kitchen with a strong brief for Geometric Shapes. The resulting kitchen is all angles and delightfully so, pushing the boundaries of a typical residential kitchen with a design that is unusual, thought-provoking and intriguing, while still displaying relevant details that appeal to the design conscious consumer. Colleen Holder is a leading designer who works alongside McGregor Kitchens – Her brief was to create a ‘textural’ kitchen. Kitchen surfaces are no longer just about colour and pattern. They are also about texture, adding to the aesthetics of the kitchen but also challenging another of the human senses – Touch – which gives customers an overall experience in the space.

Colleen’s kitchen features exciting cutting-edge products such as supermatte Formica ARtouch® which has innovative surface technology that means fingerprints won’t show – even on Black. Another surface is in Caesarstone® Rugged Concrete™ – to be shown for the first time in NZ – an innovative textured finish that is like nothing else in the market. Kitchen Mania believes that cooking and entertaining should be fun and exciting, and that is exactly what their kitchen has been designed to embrace. The colours are very vibrant, utilising the new stunning bright red freestanding SMEG Portofino cooker and range hood alongside their uniquely designed fridge to embrace the spirt of this vibrant kitchen. The desire is to challenge everyone who comes through the kitchen and hopefully provide some inspiration for people to ‘unthink’ the norms and fun with colours and make the heart of their home an inspiring place to be. Visit the Jones Family Business stand in Hall 3/4 to see these great kitchens and more on display.

After almost ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”.

was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

Come along to one of our expos and see how it works for yourself! (See red bar for details). If you have completely resigned yourself to having back or neck pain for the rest of your life, then chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more.

Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips eight years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”.

“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older.

To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here

In 2008 I had been living with a serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The Specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business.

Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been talking” Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young

Discs: It

uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car.

Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots far more effectively and returns This is pure logic, if a machine is out of quality of life alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when machine is that the body is constantly muscles are stressed they become tight repairing itself, however if the wear and which restricts the flow of blood and lymph tear on the body is greater than the body’s through the muscles so toxins build up, ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. Traction opens up the The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle decline and allows the body to repair itself, rocking motion that stimulates circulation resulting in a far healthier life. and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into If you are serious about investing in your your lymph system where it stimulates health and really sorting your issues out, lymph flow and deals with it. Come along for a free treatment Inversion helps to:

Here in New Zealand, Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores.

• Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability • Reduce The Effects Of Ageing Caused By Gravity

Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse. Dr Kanji has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”.

At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious relief which lasted for an hour or two, I was told that the relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter. Four years on I still use my table on a daily basis, my back is as strong as ever with very little or completely no pain, I am still at my same profession and working as hard as ever and most importantly I did not have the surgery. I consider the purchase of my Teeter has been one of my greatest investments, not only has it enabled me to avoid serious and costly surgery, it has kept me in my profession and it has brought my health back.

Lay of the land

It’s no secret that spending time outdoors brings about positive benefits for your mental health and wellbeing; and no place should give you that greater sense of enjoyment than your own backyard. When it comes to landscaping trends for 2018, your backyard can be anything from a place to grow your own veggies to an outdoor lounge and dining area to enjoy with family and friends.

The Swede way

We’re thrilled that one of our favourite Swedish interior trends has made its way out to the backyard. Hygge (pronounced hueguh) is the acknowledgement of a feeling, or moment of utter contentment. Low warming fires, cosy blankets to take the chill off, a bar cart to enjoy with friends, some cushions, music and glowing ambient light are the basic prerequisites in achieving this comforting trend.

Bring in colour

The traditional trend of having an all-green grassed area surrounded by wooden fences is taking a back seat and colour is in charge. Create vibrancy in your backyard through introducing a coloured block wall to help to create the view of a room; except that it’s located outside your house! Brighten up the deck area using bold colours to create personality in your space i.e. painting the door leading to your outdoor area, or adding in statement pieces for unexpected pops of colour.

Entertainment elevation

Next, upgrade your old two-wheeled BBQ and dated outdoor furniture to a built-in BBQ and entertaining area with all the amenities. An outdoor entertainment setup of this style works for you all year round if you look at weather protection from the elements in the form of hedging or screens. You could even consider installing a flat screen TV to play movies or sporting matches during the season!

A life less serious

The floating seat

If you’ve considered putting seats in your garden to try and enjoy some relaxing time outdoors then floating seats have become super popular lately; not only because they make your garden look so much better, but they also provide a greater sense of comfort and style.

Although we might not admit it, most of us still have a sense of our inner child hidden somewhere inside us. Pave the way then for a space in the backyard to let it out! Creating an area where you can play with your kids, grandkids, pets or even just to pretend you’re still a big kid is a great idea that everyone in your household could benefit from.

CHRISTOPHER MARSH LANDSCAPE DESIGNER GREEN ROOM PROJECTS Chris Marsh, Director of Greenroom Projects realised after studying architecture that the confines of an indoor job just weren’t for him. Understanding now as a Landscape Designer, how the two roles are intrinsically linked, has helped Chris redefine and create big changes in some small spaces. Which three words best describe your work and design ethos? Structural, simplified, contrasting. Who or what inspires you? The natural landscapes of New Zealand. What kinds of projects excite you the most? Large scale projects that we manage from a design stage through to completion. What is your most treasured object in your own home? Indoor plant collection. Orchids, Bird of Paradise, Peace Lily etc. Where’s your favourite place to be? The far north of New Zealand, sun rising, standing on some remote rocks with friends with a fishing rod in the water. What would you be if you weren’t a landscape designer? A florist or a builder. Words of wisdom you try to live by? Make sure you enjoy the work that you do. Put money aside, find what you enjoy, and if you truly enjoy it you’re bound to be great, and if you’re great, the money will follow. What are the projects you’re most proud of? Big changes in small spaces. An occupational hazard is‌ Working past normal working hours in a day because you’re in a groove and want to press on with a project. You’ll never see me without‌ A smile on my face! Bring your landscaping queries and plans to discuss with Chris on Site 10 in The Street at this year’s Auckland Home Show.

‘It’s like hanging out with a best friend... with less Pinot.’ ALLYSON GOFTON COAST FAN #WEMNCPF(/r%JTKUVEJWTEJ#/r&WPGFKP(/r )KUDQTPG(/r*CYMGoU$C[#/ /CPCYCVW #/ r9JCPICTGK#/ r4QVQTWC(/r5QWVJNCPF(/r6CTCPCMK#/#/ -CRKVK(/ r6CWTCPIC(/r9CKMCVQ(/r9GNNKPIVQP(/r$C[QH+UNCPFU(/r9CPICPWK(/

DOWN THE GARDEN PATH From the deck, down into the garden itself; we’ve uncovered the gardening trends to suit even the most novice garden practitioner.

THE NATURAL DYE GARDEN The edible garden has been going strong for quite some time now, but the newest editions include the natural dye gardens; producing plants that are used for making natural dyes for colouring different things and materials. Not just beautiful, these gardens can include various vegetables, fruit trees, and pollinator-attracting flowers.

EXTREME NATURALISM Perhaps one of the leading trends in gardening this year is pushing the idea of natural to the extreme – in a good way. To accomplish this look, start to incorporate more natural materials like rocks and boulders within your native plant environment and let your hedges overgrow slightly. This slightly wilder, organic look is proving much easier to achieve than the minimal, concrete-filled manicured gardens we’ve come to expect of late.

BIGGER IS BETTER Plants really are beautiful in all their forms; but let’s face it – a lot of smaller, more delicate plants may require a bit too much effort for our liking. We’re delighted then that statement plants are definitely on trend. As well as introducing a variety of functions, they require much less effort, not to mention beautifying your garden on a much grander scale!

Your September gardening check list Repot and feed your houseplants Prep your veggie patch by digging in plenty of compost Transplant summer veggie seedlings (lettuce, leeks, cabbage, onions and silverbeet) into your edible garden Stock up on seed potatoes and put them on a tray in a sunny position for at least a month before planting Refresh your herb garden with new plants or pots Spray stone fruit trees with copper oxychloride and a bug oil spray to protect from leaf curl disease and prevent brown rot at blossom time

Spending time outdoors is proving not only popular amongst the older population, but also with Millennials who are seeking a way to ‘unplug’ from their virtual world. Floratourism is taking root in the younger generation, with many now traversing gardens as a method to reconnect with nature and ditch the digital world for a while. For this very reason, trend spotters are expecting people with more digitally-driven lives to embrace gardens more and more this year, creating serene botanical gardens and rustic backyard retreats in their own backyards as a non-digital haven from their fast-paced lives.

Feed your citrus, fruit trees and berry vines with fertiliser Plant strawberries, blueberries, and rhubarb Feed and mulch roses, trees, shrubs, and flower beds Spray your lawn now for Onehunga weed and broadleaf weeds with a turf or prickle weed killer to be prickle free this summer!

INTUITIVE INTEGRATION – IS IT REALLY THAT SMART? One of the biggest growth areas at the Auckland Home Show is Smart Home technologies, whether that’s home automation and security, the latest appliances, or environmental development. Smarter solutions are being added daily to our objects and routine occurrences; in the hope of increasing our available time and quality of life.

It’s standard practice to future-proof homes when building or renovating nowadays, installing cables to allow for Wi-Fi connectivity of Smart Home products. For the uninitiated, a ‘Smart Home’ by definition is a home equipped with lighting, heating, and electronic devices that can be controlled remotely by smartphone or computer. And although these advanced technologies are brilliant – they don’t always work in harmony together. For example, you might have a lights app and smart door lock app which don’t interact. This is where a product like kiwi designed Ata Touch is at an advantage. Its energy-saving heating, lighting and home automation solution features a fully functional app for your mobile phone, giving you control of lighting, heating, security and more all the time, from anywhere in the world through your phone.

Technology continues to show up in more places and products you'd not necessarily expect. Appliances like fridges exist with entire touch screens in them, or cameras so you can monitor what's inside. There are ovens that allow you to control them from across the house or the other side of the world, and can monitor your dish as it cooks to ensure it comes out perfectly. Speakers with Bluetooth functionality, under cabinet colour changing lights and even pop up sockets for phone charging are being built into newly designed kitchens to give them even more of a technological edge and functionality for the home user.

In the bathroom, technology is becoming more personalised. The Kohler ‘Veil’ Smart Toilet warms and readies the seat for its owners use and uses hidden wireless functionality to allow for a clean no-touch flush. Aquatica’s Infiniti range offers tapware that releases a fragrance each time it’s used to transform your bathroom into a relaxing world of aromatherapy. Water saving technologies continue to be developed to provide a more environmentally conscious way of utilising our bathroom space.

Keep an eye out for all the smarter home technologies on your journey through the Home Show this year – you’ll be amazed at the array of products and integrated solutions there are available!

MURRAY KEE FINESSE RESISDENTIAL With 30 years in the building industry, the last 15 in management and sales, Murray Kee has seen building trends and legislation change dramatically. With his extensive knowledge and skill in planning and managing major building projects, we asked Murray what part of a project he enjoys the most, and what the number one question everyone should ask their builder before starting a project. What kinds of projects inspire you the most? Design & Build Projects for clients that strive for “something a little different”. What would you be if you weren’t a Registered Master Builder? Retired. What’s the one question everyone should ask their builder before starting a project? When will you be finished??? During a project, which part do you enjoy the most? With house sales in Auckland down 33.2 per cent for the year to June 2017, it seems inevitable that homeowners shift their attention back to what they can control in this pre-election environment – renovation and redecoration. However, make sure you do your homework first before you start ripping into your walls! Visit the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) on stand 772 in Halls 6/7 and pick up your free Know Your Rights booklet which is essential to understanding how you can protect yourself, your investment and the people doing your work. Renovating for your own personal use, and renovating to attract a broad range of potential buyers are two very different things; remember it all comes down to your return on investment. To add value to your house, for every $1 you spend – you want to get at least $2, even $3 dollars back. Other key considerations include:

TREND ALERT! The Big Tiny House Movement While they’re not for everyone, Tiny Houses are becoming increasingly popular as a more sustainable and affordable alternative to traditional housing. This global movement is based around semi-mobile homes, built on trailers with a floor area of approx 46 square meters or less. The philosophy is ultimately that living with less is so much more than the daily consumer craving to have or make more – rather than accepting and appreciating just what is. And aside from the poetic notion of living a smaller, simpler lifestyle the financial benefits to couples and singles in their late 20s, early 30s and even retirees are also proving appealing. At roughly 14 to 37 meters and priced anywhere between $30,000 – $100,000 the Tiny House movement is being touted as a

way to get into the housing market without a crippling mortgage; or to get out of the market and downsize tastefully. Whilst some creative types do go on to build their own Tiny Home, it can be a daunting and lengthy process for the unprepared so it’s helpful to enlist the experts like Build Tiny Ltd. Based in Katikati, Interior Architecture Graduate Gina Stevens with help from her builder brother-in-law Jason, set about creating the Millennial Tiny House last year, lured by the idea of freedom that only Tiny House living can bring. Now with two designs on offer, sold as complete turnkey build’s or empty shells ready for DIY fit-out, Build Tiny Ltd are planning to expand their range to meet New Zealand’s diverse housing needs. Make sure you check out the Build Tiny Ltd Millennial Tiny House in The Street area and make up your own mind!

One of the fundamental philosophies of the ‘tiny house’ movement is that a tiny house must be beautiful.

The Millennial Tiny House is built on a trailer to allow for easy relocation.

Gina Stevens, designer of the Millennial Tiny House

The revolution in outdoor cooking has arrived... at the Auckland Homeshow A fellow of both the Royal Society of Chemistry and The Royal Academy of Culinary Arts, Heston’s never been one to do things by the book. By pushing the traditional boundaries of the kitchen and injecting a sense of child-like wonder and theatre into everything he touches, he’s inspired a generation to seek pleasure and entertainment in food. Now Heston’s bringing his magic touch to the outdoors, making it easy for anyone who enjoys barbeque cooking, to put on a commanding experience.

Explore the multi-award winning range.

Inspired by the past. Innovated for the future. By questioning just what it is that makes cooking on charcoal so good, and why it can be challenging for some, Heston was able to create a design that ticks all the boxes. The Everdure by Heston Blumenthal barbeques make creating the authentic charcoal taste, virtually effortless.

“From quick lunches, to epic feasts, I’ve made it easy for everyone to enjoy the magic of charcoal cooking”

/ Ready to cook in 10 minutes / Built-in rotisserie system / Function and form / Fuss-free, mess-free

Power by design. For many people, gas barbeques are the go-to for outdoor cooking. Easy to use, and convenient, they’re the focal point for get-togethers all over the world, even if many are lacking in the looks department. No one wants to be stuck looking at an ugly barbeque all year-round. These are the perfect union of function and form.

“I have total control over the flame gas flow in The Fat Duck kitchen. It makes all the difference. So I wanted to offer that power in my gas barbeques”

/ Power and grace / Convection cooking made simple / Flexible grilling / Seamless design
