From next Friday the CBD will come alive with the city’s first Ipswich Fashion Festival. In this issue we take a look at what you can expect as some of the country’s big-name designers descend on Ipswich for the highly-anticipated Gala Fashion Evening, Kitsch in the Swich and Catwalk Collections. FABULOUS FROCK-ABILLY!

Retro Active

CH FASHION

RACHEL VICKARY EXPLAINS WHY WE CONTINUE TO LOVE 1940S AND ’50S FASHIONS MORE THAN SIX DECADES AFTER THEY FIRST APPEARED ON THE GLOBAL STAGE.

Vintage Vixen Keeping the feminine charm to a maximum, waists were cinched as small as possible to enhance the much desired “hourglass” figure and skirts were either skin tight or extremely full (but always worn at a ladylike knee-length or below. The mini skirt was still a decade away at this time). Hair was elaborately styled, and movie star chic was all the rage. Icons like Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly became some of the most imitated women in the world, and the hottest make-up styles – strongly defined brows, cat’s eye eyeliner, ruby red lips and sweetly flushed cheeks – were everywhere.

Retro Revamp Experimenting with vintage and retro fashion can be lots of fun, especially with so many divine vintage retailers right here on our doorstep. Most people will already have at least a few of the basics hiding away in the closet, so here are a few simple tips and tricks for turning your boring everyday pieces into straight-up frock star fabulous: ■ Got a pair of basic blue jeans? Get your retro on by rolling them up at the bottom, either in a cuff at the ankle, or to mid-calf. ■ A basic bowling-style shirt just screams ’50s. Team it with blue jeans, a pencil skirt or some pedal pushers for an authentic look. ■ Take a white, man-cut, button-down business shirt and tie it in a knot at about belly button height. Add a pencil skirt, loafers or ballet flats. ■ Add a couple of scarves in vintage-inspired patterns and wear them as a hair accessory or tied high on the throat and pulled to one side for a stylish finish. ■ Invest in a pair of Mary Jane shoes (flat or with a heel) or a pair of bowling style shoes. ■ Finish your vintage makeover with a pair of cat’s eye sunglasses and you’ll be rocking a retro vibe in no time. And don’t forget ladies, no vintage vixen or Rockabilly babe would be complete without rocking one essential ingredient – a pinup-worthy pout in ruby, scarlet, crimson or cherry!

It was fun, it was fabulous and it was fiercely feminine – 1950s fashion was all about sweetness, subtle sexiness and celebrating the female form. Clothes were about so much more than just covering up, they were chosen to celebrate a love of a particular musical genre like Rockabilly or rock ’n’ roll, to accommodate the latest dance crazes, to convey womanliness and elegance, to emulate the silver screen stars of the era, and as a celebration of the new, emerging teen culture. 08\\CITY HEART MAGAZINE \\OCTOBER 2013

Retro Rockabilly Rockabilly style, which also emerged during the 1950s, was largely a mash-up of the sweetness of the femme ’50s style combined with an edgier, sexier look inspired by the blues and country music scene, a look that still enjoys a strong following today. Rockabilly in 2013 has emerged as a sexy, tough yet still feminine fashion style with many Rockabilly girls now incorporating tattoos into their look, as well as rocking fabrics and accessories that feature skulls, cherries, animal print, Hawaiian, floral and bow motifs, along with cool new hair colours in shades of vivid red, hot pink, bright blue, eye-catching purple and more.

Sweet indul ence

IN THESE DAYS OF CROSS-FIT, NO SUGAR DIETS AND PERSONAL TRAINERS, WE STILL CRAVE OUR SWEET INDULGENCES. But there is no need to make them of the processed and packaged variety when you can have the pleasure of making, baking and eating the fruits of your own labour. Indeed, the banana cake, the much-loved baked delight of nans and school fete stalls from Goodna to Gatton, is one of my favourites. It is a simple and tasty recipe that, with a few adjustments, will leave you with less guilt, less sugar and filled not only with deliciousness but a sense of satisfaction. In this recipe, we replace fat-laden creams and milks with fat free yoghurt and skim milk and increase the protein by using spelt flour. The flavour of the rapadura sugar, the vanilla bean pods and the natural sugar from the ripe, ripe bananas mean that you use a third of the sugar that nan would have. Then, alternate with lighter mixing while you add the flours, baking powder and milk. If taking a class seems daunting, take a moment to listen to your body. The first step is to pay attention to the sensations you feel when your happy, angry, excited or agitated. Take note of the lightness you feel, the alertness, energy and exuberance. Why are you feeling this way? Analyse and re-evaluate those feelings. Yoga guru Pushpa Bashki says while effective on a physical level, yoga also encourages a better state of mind and enables personal growth. She says breathing is crucial a crucial part of yoga practice. “While in sukh asana (sitting posture) focus on how to uncover your deepest fears and roadblocks towards fulfilment,” she says. “While doing this you should be doing pranayama breathing.”

Pranayama is the science of breath control. It comes from the words: Prana – “life force” or “life energy”; Yama – “discipline” or “control”; and Ayama – “expansion”, “non-restraint”, or “extension”. “Due to our lifestyles of work, family, financial pressures, we tend to ignore our breathing. Thus, it tends to be fast and shallow,” Pushpa says. “The use of only a fraction of your lungs results in lack of oxygen and may lead to different complications. “By practising deep and systematic breathing, we re-energise our body.” Just like meditation, the goal is to focus and eventually quiet your mind, thus freeing your awareness. Try it for five to 10 minutes and embrace the peacefulness. Try out the Salute to the Sun sequence (left).

Gold Coast’s lustre returns Golden sands, brilliant surf breaks and constant glamour have been the backbone of the Gold Coast. Yet challenging times have hit the Queensland tourism hotspot. Floods, cyclonic conditions and the GFC all hit the region hard in recent years. Even the Meter Maids are on their last legs. But the sun has returned and the shine is returning to the iconic glitter strip. And there are signs the region is looking toward a bright future. A $1.2 billion light-rail system is under construction. The first stage is 13km and will include 16 stations with 14 trams – linking the busy Griffith University with Southport, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach. There are currently some great accommodation deals available, while there are also some alluring theme park offerings.

You make balancing look as easy as pie as you juggle finances, workloads and love life it is an exciting month. Don’t wear yourself out.

Time for all goats to put away their horns and stop butting heads. No one likes a grumpy goat and Capricorns can make the entire world feel like you are either against them or with them. Good friends will make you aware of what side of the fence they sit on and remember that the grass is greener on the other side, but is that where you want to be now? Take a chill pill, sit cross legged and say “omm” – it’s much better for your temper than a tantrum.

Barbecues are on the agenda for Aries this month. The weather is fantastic, you have never felt better. It might be time to consider a new hairstyle, wardrobe or abode. If moving house this month, watch your back. If there is one thing you don’t need it’s a chiropractor bill. Get some hunky looking removalists to do all the work for you. Who knows, one of them could be the man in uniform you have been looking for.

It is time for you to stop brooding about the past and welcome the future with open arms. If times have been tough of late then they are about to change as the money sector flows into your sign during October. Even if there is an eclipse around, which may affect your mood, you may have to embrace change. Your work and social life is looking good, you just need to find the right balance.

Libra

(Oct 24 – Nov 22)

Scorpio

You have moved up in the world. Our little Scorpio has moved out of those boring digs into a new environment. It is finally heating up and there is nothing a Scorpio likes better than basking in the sun. Great time for a spot of nude sunbathing. Just watch out for your neighbours, you don’t want to ruffle any friendships there. Wear sunscreen also or the only sting a Scorpio will feel is the sting of sunburn. Ouch! (Nov 23 – Dec 21)

Sagittarius

Sagittarians will be feeling pretty pleased with themselves this month with a new position opening up career wise. You will be needing a pay rise to cope with that overboard obsession with shoes. Don’t forget that you can only wear a pair of shoes once before they need to be placed at the back of your wardrobe to drag out a new pair. Congratulations on the job advancement and to the carpenter who needs to increase the size of your wardrobe.

Capricorn

Aries

Cancer

(Jan 21 – Feb 19)

(Apr 21 – May 21)

(July 24 – Aug 23)

Time to celebrate as it is finally getting to the end of the long arduous journey you have been on recently. What a burden! Now it is time to throw caution to the wind and let bygones be bygones. Time to start looking for the ideal Christmas gifts for someone special in your life. Perhaps a holiday could be on the cards somewhere near the water.

Looking good Taurus! That new fitness program has you flaunting a trim, taut and terrific bod, and people are noticing too. It may be time to break out the champagne, low calorie of course, to celebrate your great milestone achievement. Exercise they say is good for the soul, so you must have one of the healthiest souls around. Strut your stuff and get your groove on for October, just watch out you don’t overdo it.

Get your passport in order Leo, a trip overseas could be on the agenda. Whether the trip is for pleasure or work it all looks great for your career. If your thinking of study, now is the time to improve your mind and your finances will follow. Relationships are about to heat up, so wear an outfit to dazzle your partner. Lock the door and put up the Do Not Disturb sign.

Aquarius

(Feb 20– Mar 20)

Pisces

All fish should feel a little claustrophobic this month as the warmer weather kicks in, so get out and enjoy life to the fullest. Get to the beach and catch up with old friends – splashing around in the surf will recharge your batteries. Take note of people and places in case you misplace your keys or wallet, as you can be a tad forgetful when it comes to good times. After mid month October is looking swimmingly good.

Taurus

(May 22 – June 22)

Gemini

October is a very difficult month for the twin signs of the Zodiac. This month you are now settled into a new routine. How you adapt to your new environment is yet to be seen. Your money signs are great so time to spend up big on the new wardrobe. There are plenty of excuses to buy that new outfit so you can dazzle everyone at your Christmas party. No time like the present to party hard, enjoy life and live a little.

Leo

(Aug 24 – Sept 24)

Virgo

Whoops! Did you spend all the money you made on the finer things in life? Of course you did. It may feel like you are going in one direction, and no I don’t mean the band. Don’t let fear overcome any challenges placed in front of you, it is time to don the superhero cape and go and fight crime like all good superheros do. Up, up and away!

TUCKED AWAY IN THE IPSWICH CBD IS THIS STUNNING PIECE OF QUEENSLAND’S HISTORY. ‘The Chestnuts’ was constructed in 1885 and is now available for a new family to add their own chapter of history. Reminiscent of an English cottage, it is Ipswich’s only example of a two-storey brick cottage with attic rooms, built in the true Gothic Revival style. The Chestnuts was originally built as a residence and during its first 50 years it was used as a finishing school for young ladies. Apart from the marks in the floorboards made by tap dancing students, there is no other physical evidence to denote the building was used as a school. Despite the many changes to the home during the 1960s and 1970s much of the essence of 1885 remains in tact. Some of the features of ‘The Chestnuts’ include: ■ Triple-brick ground floor walls with doublebrick upper ■ Extensive use of flame and fiddle back Queensland red cedar ■ Antique cast iron staircase from the first Post Office in Spring Hill, Brisbane c.1870 ■ Marble floor and walls to ensuite ■ English-imported wallpapers
