In a charming setting, visible from multiple angles, a small hipped-roof shelters welcomes the Holy Family, surrounded by trees, flowers and local fauna, in a harmonious portrait of nature and cultural soul of Madeira.

Various traditions of the Madeiran culture, such as gastronomy, handicraft and folklore, are showcased in the Ethnographic Village, in Largo da Restauração. On 5 January, at 18:00, people sing in honour of the kings in the Municipal Garden in a concert open to the public, reviving this Madeiran tradition. The arrival of the Three Kings is celebrated on 6 January and tradition dictates that it should be celebrated with the famous Bolo Rei cake (King’s Cake), which contains a bean and a trinket. The people’s memory dictates that whoever is lucky enough to get the slice containing the bean will have to buy the cake the following year, and whoever gets the trinket will have to buy the drinks, ensuring this tradition can be celebrated year after year.

AND STIL…

Nativity scenes on the Island

The nativity scene is a spontaneous creation representing the birth of Jesus Christ and has become an iconic feature of Christmas in Madeira. While some maintain the traditional style, others modernise it. Natural materials or resources at hand are usually used to build the traditional ‘lapinha’, some in a staircase style, or others imitating a rocky formation, reflecting the creativity of each person, influenced by the environment in which they live. In Madeira, there are nativity scenes which are true works of art and open to the public for visits. For more information, visit the website: visitmadeira.com

Christmas in the Museums

During this season, museums under the supervision of the Regional Directorate for Culture reveal a valuable collection dedicated to nativity scene traditions, with paintings, altarpieces, nativity scene boxes, polychrome clay figures and Baby Jesus figurines that bear witness to Madeira’s memory and devotion.

The different exhibitions evoke the festive and family atmosphere of a traditional Christmas, inviting visitors to discover the cultural richness of this emblematic tradition of the island. The temporary exhibitions are free of charge.

- Frederico de Freitas House Museum – Exhibition ‘Christmas at Casa da Calçada’ (from 10 December) and children’s workshop ‘Let’s keep our Christmas’;

- Quinta das Cruzes Museum – Workshop ‘Christmas at the MQC’, aimed at families (13 December);

- Universe of Memories – João Carlos Abreu – Exhibition ‘Neapolitans on the Island - Sacred and Profane Universe’ (from 12 December);

- Madeira Ethnographic Museum – Exhibition “Lapinha do Caseiro” showing “Sustainable Nativity Scenes: creating with stone” (both from 16 December);

- MUDAS. Madeira Contemporary Art Museum – Themed visit “Advent of a collection” (9 December) and creative Christmas workshop “mobile e stabile” (13 December).

Visitors will have the opportunity to admire the works of 8 hotels and 8 participating designers who have accepted the challenge of presenting “their” Christmas table, in which the main element is Madeira Embroidery. An exhibition held by Bordal, in collaboration with the Municipality of Funchal.

It will be open to the public every day from 13 December 2025 to 4 January 2026, except on 23, 24, 25, 26 and 31 December and 1 January.
