VANTAGE WINDOWS & DOORS / 3

GETTINGSTARTED Choosing the best windows and doors for your home begins with considering the way you like to live, inside and outside. There are solutions for all situations across all the Vantage ranges. It’s your choice to decide what will work for you and your family. Here’s how to start.

4

1. SET YOUR STYLE A home’s joinery is vital to set the design style, inside and outside, making the most of the views around you. The Vantage ranges give you endless options to cement your design vision with highly functional and durable windows, doors and hardware. From the warmth of wood with Smartwood to the strong aesthetics of the APL Architectural Series, it’s easy to find the Vantage choice that matches your style. Our wide range of entrance doors gives opportunity to introduce unique design elements, and to use different colours on the inside and outside. • • • • • • •

What is your colour palette? Do you want joinery to match, complement or contrast the design scheme inside? What statement do you want to make with your entrance door? Where do you need locks (interior and exterior), grips, flush handles or levers? Would you like to enhance a view to the outdoors? Do you have a preference for an anodised or powdercoated finish? What is your budget?

2. CREATE YOUR ENVIRONMENT At Vantage, we’ve been constantly refining our Kiwi homegrown technology and design for over 40 years, so whatever the weather at your place, we’ve got a solution. When considering your environment, windows and doors should help to optimise temperature, light, sound and security. The foundation of a healthy home is also making sure it’s warm and dry. This is boosted with Vantage’s unique ThermalHEART technology. • • • •

What are your building code requirements for glazing? Do you want tinted glass in any areas that get major sun exposure, or for overhead windows? Consider your glass options to optimise your home’s thermal efficiency How windy is it at your place?

3. LOCK IN YOUR LIFESTYLE Vantage has a strong selection of windows and doors that can really open up or shelter from the environment around you. Consider how your choices might provide seamless flow between interior and exterior, for both windows and doors. Your selection in the opening style of windows and doors can also have an impact on the safety of adults and children who might be seated, walking or playing outside. Awning windows, for example, might not be the best choice if they protrude into areas where children often play. You should also consider how people might move from inside to outside. You might want the wide opening of bi-fold windows or doors, or be thinking about stacking panels. • What are the areas of foot traffic outside your home, including paths, play areas, seating? • Do you want extra wide door or window openings? • Do you need doors to lay flat against the exterior wall when open?

THERMALHEART FOR A WARMER, HEALTHIER, MORE COMFORTABLE FAMILY HOME Advanced ThermalHEART technology adds maximum energy conservation and comfort to the Vantage Residential and Metro Series ranges, making for the ultimate in year round living. Our unique ThermalHEART insulator separates the inside and outside metal faces, stopping the transmission of cold through the aluminium, and interior warmth is retained more effectively. When combined with double glazing, ThermalHEART qualifies for the Energy Star Mark, and can be enhanced depending on your glass choices.

NOTE: ThermalHEART products have a thermal break within the system, and in direct sunlight the temperature on the external facing of the product may become very high, relative to inside. There is a potential for the system to experience slight bowing and doors may have difficulty closing smoothly. We stress that this is only a temporary effect and the system will revert back to its normal shape as the aluminium cools. This effect is primarily in dark colours, so it can be minimised by selecting lighter external colours or increasing the shade in the area.

HEAT, LIGHT AND SOUND CHOICES IN GLASS

DOUBLE GLAZING AND SAFETY With double glazed windows and doors, your home will be warmer in winter and cooler in summer. The unique structure of double glazing allows for reduced UV (ultraviolet) radiation transfer and reduced outward heat loss. In other words, it helps to stop the sun blazing in, and reduces heat loss. Regulations in the NZ Building Code mean that double glazing is required in most New Zealand homes. All Vantage windows and doors are supplied with glass that complies with NZS4223, the glazing standard cited as an acceptable solution in the NZ Building Code. See page 79 for glass options diagrams.

INDUSTRY

12

ENERGY STAR® The Energy Star® Mark system is New Zealand’s only independent and government backed mark of energy efficiency. It is administered by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA). The mark is applied to the most energy efficient products within a category.

Windows and doors supplied by Vantage qualify for the Energy Star Mark when an R-value of 0.32 is achieved. This is a demanding measure of thermal resistance. ThermalHEART products with double glazing will qualify for this mark.

Look for the WEERS rating on your window quote or in a separate report from your Vantage sales representative.

Standard aluminium frames also meet this threshold if they include high performance double glazing, with Argon gas fill and a Low E coating.

WINDOW ENERGY EFFICIENCY RATING SYSTEM (WEERS)

This system allocates between one and six stars to a job lot of windows and doors, so is more descriptive than the Energy Star Mark programme. WEERS has been adopted by the Window Association of New Zealand and uses its own star logo. The more stars, the better the thermal efficiency.

VANTAGE WINDOWS & DOORS / 13

COLOUR Your joinery colour choice helps to link both your interior and exterior design schemes. Start with considering what will work with the colour of your roof, cladding, walls and floors, and whether you’d like a complement or contrast. If you’d like to have dual schemes, a different interior colour to exterior, this is possible within the Metro Series when ThermalHEART is included.

14

SURFACE FINISHING POWDERCOATINGS Powdercoating is a proven hard wearing choice with a wide variety of finishes to choose from. Vantage uses premium grade powders with advanced weather durability. • Duralloy® is the powdercoat suitable for most homes, and is the main powder grade used in New Zealand • Duratec® is a more robust coating which may be required, depending on the location of your property and its proximity to the coast, as detailed in NZS:3604. Mannex powdercoat finish is available on entrance doors and offers a low sheen surface that is very resistant to marking and scuffing. A matt finish (rather than satin) is available as standard for most popular colour choices. Please see your Vantage colour range. The Vantage Popular Colour Range brochure is available from your Vantage sales consultant, and features 35 of the most popular colours. A total range of over 80 powdercoat colours are available.

POWDERCOATING WARRANTIES

Duralloy is designed for: • residential developments • buildings up to three levels • properties greater than 100 metres from the mean high tide level • where a 15 year film and colour integrity warranty is required.

Duratec is designed for: • prestigious residential and commercial developments • all major architectural developments • properties greater than 10 metres from the mean high tide level • where a superior film and colour integrity warranty is required.

For further information on the Duratec warranty please refer to your Vantage manufacturer and the specific Duratec Colour Range brochure.

ANODISING As an alternative to powdercoating, anodised offers a glowing matt sheen to the aluminium and is the ultimate in durability. It is the recommended choice of finish for coastal environments. The natural protective oxide film on the aluminium’s surface is essentially thickened to achieve this. With Vantage, the FrostUltra process minimises the visible grain, which you would see in traditional anodising. Colours and film thickness are available in natural/silver (12 and 25 microns), bronze in light, medium or dark (12 and 25 micron) plus champagne and black (25 micron only). In coastal, industrial or other corrosive environments, 25 microns is the recommended film thickness and may be required in order to qualify for a warranty. The Vantage superseal anodised coating features a warranty of 10 years for 12 micron anodising and 20 years for 25 micron.

KEEPING THE CHARACTER ALIVE WITH VANTAGE CAREFULLY CHOSEN VANTAGE WINDOWS AND DOORS PRESERVE THE LOOK, FEEL, AND SEASIDE CHARM OF A CLASSIC 1930s BUNGALOW IN WELLINGTON’S EASTERN BAYS. It was vital for the owners to achieve a balance - preserving their home’s unique character while introducing function and technology for comfort and warmth. They chose windows and doors from the Vantage Residential range throughout the majority of the house, while Smartwood was used to set off a stunning seaview in the conservatory. Faced with cedar wood on the inside and Matt Titania powdercoat on the outside, the conservatory features character style Smartwood bi-fold, casement and skylight windows. The bi-fold gives the owners the option to open the room completely to enjoy the breeze and unimpeded view. The warmth of cedar combined with matai wooden floors set off the owners’ design intention – to create the feeling of a ship’s bridge. They used french doors and bi-fold windows for a seamless flow between inside and out. The 3 metre bi-fold kitchen window faces the bench on one side and a servery on the outside for easy outdoor entertaining. A second storey was also added to the home. This features a gable end verandah with matching pitch perfect raking windows tucked underneath. Perfectly finished off with bi-folding doors as the centrepiece, there’s an enviable view to the city from the master bedroom.

SIMPLE SELECTION FOR A BOLD DESIGN STATEMENT THREE TYPES OF VANTAGE WINDOWS AND DOORS WERE USED IN THIS IMPRESSIVE AND WELL THOUGHT OUT HAMILTON HOME. Bronwyn, an interior designer, and husband Bruce Turton, a builder, created a home with intricate attention to detail and innovation. Bruce looked to the Vantage Residential range for the mix of sliding doors, large fixed windows, and louvre windows for ventilation. “I didn’t want a mix of window types,” he said. “A consistent look was important from an aesthetic viewpoint.” The home features a spectacular double height entranceway, which uses Vantage shop front style windows (normally used in commercial buildings) for an all glass look. This sets the tone for expansive spaces and wide, roomy corridors. “It’s a big home so we didn’t want pokey hallways. The result was a home that, from a space and volume point of view, feels very comfortable,” Bruce said. Vantage duo-slider doors help with the sense of expanse adjacent to the dining and portico area, with clear vision open or closed. Bruce said the planning and execution of fine detailing work was an added aspect of the job he enjoyed, testing out some creative innovations. Windows and doors were installed in a negative detail surround set off with a plaster finish, where architraves would be expected in a traditional design. The Turtons sourced matching aluminium box sections and angles as cosmetic borders. Continuing with their desire for simplicity, Bruce rebated the floors so sliding doors could sit lower to further enhance movement between inside and out.

MINIMALISM IN ANODISED BLACK A HERNE BAY HOME’S MINIMAL DESIGN VISION WAS REALISED WITH WINDOWS AND DOORS FROM THE APL ARCHITECTURAL SERIES. Light and reflection fills the family’s three storey home, which makes stunning use of both black FrostUltra anodised joinery and bespoke windows where aluminium is cleverly hidden. The home is designed with a street frontage of pre-cast rough shuttered concrete fins to screen the windows. It has an artful shuffling of interior floor levels, passages and geometrical spaces. Care was taken to ensure the architectural fins were manufactured with notches to effectively hide the window jambs. In the lounge, corner posts were substituted with innovative double glazed posts. Glass louvres were widely used throughout the house for ventilation, with special adaptations made to square off the frames. Designed by architect Daniel Marshall, the APL Architectural Series met the challenge of providing solutions for this home to enhance its light, function and form.

VANTAGE SYSTEMS HELP TRANSFORM A WELLINGTON GARAGE THERMALHEART WINDOWS AND DOORS FROM VANTAGE PROVIDE SCENIC VIEWS WHILE ENSURING THERMAL PERFORMANCE IN THIS UNIQUE GARAGE DEVELOPMENT. This eye catching project in the Wellington suburb of Brooklyn seems to qualify for the often used descriptive ‘small but perfectly formed’. The stylish combo of garage with compact apartment above brings together a collation of contemporary design elements with a sharp edged, street-side impact usually only reserved for full scale residential projects. Careful colour control blended the main components, a random laid cedar cladding system stained in black, a black standing seam steel roof and artfully incorporated ThermalHEART windows and doors from Vantage in Matt Black powdercoat. The project, a collaboration between the clients and architectural designers, Intelligent Design of Lower Hutt, skilfully combined two objectives: the need to replace a dilapidated garage, and the opportunity to provide a small city pad for country based parents. A total reconstruction recycled only a part of the original concrete slab and added a 60m2 apartment with kitchen/living area and one bedroom with ensuite. “We wanted a design that blended in with the existing timber fence and large stand of Pohutukawa trees,” said the client. Environmental good intentions seem to have earned an architectural reward in both scale and aesthetic ‘fit’ that local residents have commented on admiringly. With generous glazing throughout, it was decided to have a thermally broken window suite with Metro Series’ ThermalHEART to ensure that warmth was retained in winter. Wide sliding doors were installed to maximise the view to the western hills. Other Metro Series products included raking, standard fixed lights and awning windows.

MIX AND MATCH FOR FULL ADVANTAGE THIS NORTH SHORE, AUCKLAND SHOW HOME USES WINDOWS AND DOORS FROM VANTAGE RESIDENTIAL AND METRO SERIES TO ACHIEVE SEAMLESS FLOW, ALONG WITH AN ALUMINIUM PLASMA ENTRANCE DOOR IN ‘TUTTI FRUTTI GREEN’. Designers chose a mix of both suites as the door types providing a wide access to front and rear decks. The extra width and the 2.2 metre height of the door panels they wanted was well catered for with Metro Series sliding doors. In one of the downstairs living areas, narrower single moving sliding doors were used from the Vantage Residential range. Awning windows (top-hinged) are the main type used, with sliding windows, louvre and high level electrically operated windows to meet specific needs. A sliding window was chosen above a kitchen bench to allow an easy reach when opening and closing. The louvre windows, placed to allow ventilation next to closed Metro Series sliders, feature powdercoated aluminium blades. With ventilation in mind, high level top opening windows were chosen in the lounge area operated by a wall switch. The designers matched the Vantage Matt Titania powdercoat finish with the dark grey and white exterior colour scheme, a complement to the neutral interior palette.

This commonly used insulated glass unit IGU uses panes of standard clear glass with an air gap in between.

Tinted glass significantly reduces solar heat and UV transmission and also reduces light entry. It is suitable for those windows with a major exposure to summer sun.

This IGU has argon gas in the internal space which enhances the insulation performance.

Low E (low emissivity) glass greatly enhances the insulation performance of the unit.

A handy combination of solar heat reducer and wintertime insulator - a good option for overhead glazing. A reflective outer pane would provide even more solar protection.

This unit combines the insulating benefits of both Low E glass and an argon gas internal space.

CARE & MAINTENANCE YOUR VANTAGE WINDOWS AND DOORS WILL RESPOND WELL TO REGULAR MAINTENANCE. THEY ARE A SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT SO IT MAKES SENSE TO LOOK AFTER THEM.

CLEANING REGIME Vantage products meet all statutory warranty requirements and are fully tested to ensure compliance with the New Zealand Building Code. Nevertheless, some simple steps will aid in retaining their appeal for many years to come.

cleaned with a wet sponge without the use of detergent, as the latter can damage plating.

After house construction is completed it is important that any builder’s debris or dust is cleaned from the inside of the sills to ensure the drainage holes are not blocked. This is especially applicable to doorways that may have been in regular use during construction.

Stainless steel hardware needs to be cleaned regularly and care needs to be taken when rust spots occur. Even the highest grades of stainless steel can develop rust spots and these can be removed with a mildly abrasive cleaner and rinsed with fresh water. In cases of heavy corrosion a Scotch-Brite™ hand pad can be used. Specialised 3M® Stainless Steel Cleaner and Polish is also available as an alternative cleaning compound.

Cleaning once every three months is recommended for windows and doors. In coastal or industrial environments more frequent washing will be required.

Glass is a very delicate product that can be easily damaged. Care is needed to ensure that scratching does not occur.

We recommend cleaning with a soft brush with warm water and some mild household detergent before rinsing with fresh water. Do not use abrasive steel wool, scrapers, scouring liquids, aggressive solvents or thinners as these are likely to damage the surface finish. The cleaning cycle should include the removal of build-up in door tracks to ensure the maintenance of drainage paths, and continued smooth operation of rollers.

INCLUDE HARDWARE Regular maintenance of hardware is recommended. Powder coated hardware should be cleaned regularly with a wet sponge or soft brush, warm water and a mild detergent then rinsed with fresh water. Plated product should be

TAKE CARE WITH GLASS

Only detergents and cleaning solutions which are recommended for glass should be used. Commence cleaning by soaking the glass to loosen dirt. Using a mild, non-abrasive solution, uniformly apply to the glass surfaces. Ensure that the solution is removed by rinsing with water as cleaning residue can permanently mark glass.

SMARTWOOD MAINTENANCE To comply with warranty requirements and to ensure longevity of Smartwood windows and doors, the interior timber face should be sealed as soon as possible after installation with an appropriate finish e.g. oiled, varnished, stained or painted, according to manufacturer’s instructions. If the timber is oiled or stained, this treatment will need to be reapplied every few years to maintain the appropriate level of product protection and appearance.
