Background and Objectives of Hong Kong Outstanding ICT Achiever Awards 2012 To accentuate, recognise and honour the significant contributions of the ICT professionals in the Hong Kong’s ICT industry, Hong Kong Computer Society (HKCS) had launched the first-ever HKCS Outstanding IT Achiever Awards (OITAA) in 2008 to reward the much praised individuals in the ICT field and to showcase the impact that they have made to the local ICT industry and the community. This year, it should be time to highlight the achievements and contributions of ICT professionals again. The overall objective of the Outstanding ICT Achiever Awards 2012 (hereinafter called Awards) is to give honour and recognition to the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) professionals who have made significant contributions to the ICT industry in Hong Kong and to the community at large. The objectives of the Awards are: — To recognise individuals who excel in the ICT profession. — To pay tribute to veterans who have made outstanding contributions to the ICT industry. — To recognise contribution and value to the nominees’ organisations. — To promote ICT professional standard and attract more youth to join the ICT Industry. — To raise public awareness of the importance of ICT Industry in Hong Kong.

Background of HKCS Founded in 1970, the Hong Kong Computer Society (HKCS), with over 8,000 members hail from the entire spectrum of HK’s IT community, is a well-recognised non-profit organisation focused on advancing the interests of Hong Kong’s IT profession and industry. The Society is committed to the following main goals: • Talent cultivation and professional development • Industry development and collaboration • The effective use of IT in our community The 25 Members of the HKCS Council, and the Honorary Council Advisers, are recognised leaders from major IT vendors, academic institutions, and major corporations. One of its standing committees, the CIO Board, is composed of CIOs whose IT related procurement accounts for about 70% of all IT spending in HK. To promote IT in Hong Kong, HKCS organises regular activities including conferences, seminars, workshops and visits on various subjects related to IT. With Talent Cultivation and Professional Development being our primary goal, the Society persistently encourages our youths to pursue IT-related studies at our tertiary institutions and to take up IT as a career through talks, exhibitions, IT Career toolkit and Portal. Our 7 special interest groups (SIG) (Cloud Computing, Social Media, Mobility, Enterprise Architecture, Business Intelligence and Knowledge Management, Information Security, and Quality Management) disseminate technical and application knowledge of topical interests to in-service professionals through forums and networking activities. The Society is the pioneer in launching IT professional certification in HK, with six certifiable titles, namely three senior titles (Systems Architect, Project Director, Quality Assurance Manager), and three junior titles (Associate Project Manager, Information Security Officer, Business Analyst). To promote our IT industry, HKCS organises an annual delegation from HK to compete in APICTA (Asia Pacific ICT Awards). In 2011, HK entries have the record breaking results of 5 Grand Awards and 9 Merits, the best performance ever in the history of APICTA by a participating economy.

In recent years through successes in various local and international award schemes in ICT such as the HKICT Awards and APICTA Awards (Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards), Hong Kong has gained a deserving recognition as an innovative centre for ICT excellence. The development and implementation of these outstanding products and applications are undertaken by our many home grown and locally nurtured quality professionals whom the HKCS wishes to encourage and recognize. The OICTAA 2012 ( Outstanding ICT Achievers Awards 2012) aims to recognize such outstanding professionals in a number of categories, including sales and marketing professionals, consultants, project managers, innovators and young professionals and entrepreneurs., Through a rigorous regime of application screening, insightful evaluation by the category panels of assessors and the deliberation of a Judging Panel, deserving professionals are honoured by this Award, thus reflecting their personal achievements, the power of teamwork, and the positive branding of the organizations which nurture such talents.

I am delighted that the Hong Kong Computer Society (HKCS) has organized again the HKCS Outstanding ICT Achievers Awards to recognize the contributions and achievements of ICT professionals in Hong Kong. It is my great honor to have had the opportunity of chairing the Panel of Judges for this prestigious award and to learn from the successful achievements of so many talented individuals. Indeed, it is gratifying to see the the ICT professionals in Hong Kong continue to be hard-working, innovative and creative. Achievement Award Prof. Yeung Yuet Bor Adjunct Professor Department of Information Systems City University of Hong Kong

Prof. Yeung had 37 years of solid IT technical, management, and leadership experience in the banking and financial industry of Hong Kong and Canada. He retired from HSBC in April 2006. Since then, he has been an Adjunct Professor in the Information Systems Department of the City University of Hong Kong, responsible for lecturing in the Use of IT in Banking, Knowledge Management, Business Process Re-engineering, and IT Strategic Planning. Prof. Yeung is one of the early generation IT professionals in Hong Kong. He graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 1969 with a B. Sc. Degree in Electrical Engineering. He then joined HSBC EDP department as a programmer in Assembler and COBOL languages. He later progressed to the position of project leader and senior systems analyst and was responsible for developing the Autopay system, Foreign Exchange system and the IBM 3890 document processing system for cheque clearing in Hong Kong. Prof. Yeung immigrated to Canada in 1977. He joined Bank of Nova Scotia in Toronto to develop banking systems. His responsibilities covered Online Banking, Credit Cards, Funds Transfer and ATM systems. After spending 12 years in Toronto, he rejoined HSBC Group in 1989 as Vice President of the Group Systems Development Centre in Vancouver and setup the first offshore Software Development Centre for the HSBC Group. He was responsible for the Hexagon Electronic Banking System, which was a forerunner of today’s Internet Banking. In 1994, Prof Yeung was invited by HSBC to return to Hong Kong to manage all the software development and support activities. In 1997, he was promoted to the position of Assistant General Manager and Chief Information Officer for HSBC Asia Pacific, covering 15 countries. With over 3,000 staff reporting to him, his responsibilities covered setting and directing IT strategies, software design and development, IT operations and telecommunications. Prof. Yeung was also a member of the Executive Committee of HSBC. Apart from his duties in HSBC, Prof. Yeung was a Board member of the Belgium based company SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications) from 1994 to 2006, representing Hong Kong and HSBC. In addition to his main board duties, he was Chairman of the SWIFT Technology and Production Committee, Chairman of the SWIFT Asia Pacific Council, and Chairman of the Hong Kong SWIFT User Group. During his tenure as regional CIO of HSBC Asia Pacific, Prof Yeung championed many banking projects that leveraged the fast changing information technology to transform dramatically how HSBC delivered its services to customers in Asia Pacific. Examples are e-banking, telephone and mobile banking, RTGS(Real time gross settlement system), customer centric banking, cheque imaging and truncation system(CITS), regionalization of all Asia Pacific data centres into Hong Kong and the establishment of the infrastructure to support multiple servicing centres in Asia Pacific for the bank. He was also instrumental in building software centres for the bank in China and working with his global counterparts in UK and North America to offshore software work to India and Canada. Out of these projects, the most notable example is the Internet Banking System implemented by Prof Yeung in 2000. Since its implementation, this system has achieved very high customer satisfaction and was ranked as one of the top e-banking systems in Asia. After his retirement in 2006, Prof Yeung accepted several HKSAR government appointments. The first one is an appointment to the Hong Kong Deposit Protection Board by the Financial Secretary. The second one is a committee member of the Qualification Framework Project sponsored by the Education and Manpower Bureau in 2007. In September 2007, Prof. Yeung was appointed to the Board of the Lottery Fund Committee in Hong Kong. In 2009, he was appointed as a member of the ICT consultation committee of the Employees Retraining Board, and a member of the Accreditation Committee for Computer Science Programmes of the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers. Prof Yeung has also been very active in the Hong Kong IT community. He is the Vice Chairman of the IT Management Club and a committee member of the IT management committee of HKMA. For specific projects, he was the co-convenor of the Business Analyst working group of the Hong Kong Institute for IT Professional Certification(HKITPC), the Chairman of the Expert Group of the IT Roadmap project sponsored by OGCIO and coordinator of the 2012 Alan Turing year activities sponsored by the HK Computer Society.

HKCS Outstanding ICT Achievement Awards 2012: Sales/ Marketing/ Business Development Category Mr. Chan Chi Tong, Michel General Manager CITI-DIC IT Corporation Limited

Mr. Chan has been leading his company to provide language laboratory hardware/ software and e-learning systems to local primary and secondary schools since 1999. In the past years, he was monitoring on the technological advancement in school environment and listened to teachers and students for their practical requirements. His products were evolved from hardware-based to softwarebased, and from fixed network to WI-FI deployment. The latest product was launched in 2009, and 3 out of 21 cluster schools in Education Bureau’s e-learning pilot project adopted the product.

Comments from the Panel Mr. Chan is keeping eyes on the technology trend and the user demand in the education sector, and thus he can develop his product and business to be ahead of the market. This market insight provides his company with a key to success in the educational sector in the past years. He believes that the end-user involvement and the company long-term commitment to a specific sector is a must for a successful product. His vision is quite matching with the e-learning era advocated by the local education community.

Ms. Chan Shuk Kuen, Erica Commercial Director Wharf T&T eBusiness Limited Since 2008, Ms. Chan was responsible to lead & develop the sales team to market e-marketing and other compliance service to SME, corporate accounts and group-buy consumers. In the past 4 years, her teams increased the company revenue five times, acquired more than 1000 new customers, and achieved outstanding growth of customer’s average contract value. She adopted a consulting approach to track and hunt potential clients and shorten the sales cycle for her sales team. She contributed to the development of new products to help the business growth of her clients, such as joint promotion, group buy and cross-selling. She developed the corporate segment business to ensure a steady growing income stream and built a good reference list for the SME segment. With the growing Social media marketing opportunities to local business, Erica helps grew the company’s eMarketing managed services by winning more than 50 sizable projects since 2010.

Comments from the Panel Starting from a junior position, Ms. Chan has climbed up the career ladder with her great passion, efforts, learning and hard-working. When she leads her teams, she is walking along with her teammates for various sales calls and thus has fostered a harmony working environment for achieving a good business performance under her supervision. She well uses her market insight and customer-care attitude to enhance the depth and variety of the products and then develop new products every year to meet the market demands.

Business Development HKCS Outstanding ICT Achievement Awards 2012: Sales/ Marketing/ Business Development Category Ms. Chan Wing Sum, Wincy Senior Consulting Sales Manager Oracle Systems (Hong Kong) Limited Ms. Chan was responsible to lead her sales team in negotiating with a cargo terminal company in revamping its core system from legacy technologies to world class platform. Beside the technical complexity of the project, the uncertainty about the success of the new system felt by the client staff caused a great hurdle to overcome. Ms. Chan placed great efforts to develop partnership with different levels of the client staff and work with them for every detail piece of the revamping. With mutual trust developed over the time, the client staff built up their confidence and then tendered their commitment to the project.

Comments from the Panel Under the adverse factors of the technical complexity and the worry of the client staff, Ms. Chan well used her efforts, patience and communication skills to build up a partnership relationship and obtain the confidence from all levels of the client staff. One success factor was that at the very first beginning, she heartfelt that she could help her client. With this confidence and her whole-heart commitment in the process, she persuaded the client staff to build up the same level of confidence so as to make this very complicated project a success.

Mr. Chiu Ka Chun, Eric Sales Director EMC Computer Systems (FE) Limited Since 2009, Mr. Chiu led and grew his internal and external resources to sell full range of information management solutions to those under penetrated market segments, including general commercial, services providers and retail. To cover the large number of target clients of those new market segments, he identified, mentored and worked closely with channel partners to fulfill the sales target. Moreover, he developed new ideas, such as cloud-based services, to address the emerging market demand of cloud services, which in turn formed a good income stream to his sales team and his channel partners.

Comments from the Panel Mr. Chiu has a very clear sales strategy and implementation plan to address those under penetrated market segments that have been assigned to him. Starting from 1-man team, he has then developed the sales team to cover more and more segments. He is good at listening to client’s requirements and concerns, and then starts to source appropriate solutions from colleagues in other countries to meet that requirements and then close a business deal. He is also good at coaching young colleagues so as to develop a stronger sales team for achieving good sales performance.

Business Development HKCS Outstanding ICT Achievement Awards 2012: Sales/ Marketing/ Business Development Category Mr. Michael Gazeley Managing Director Network Box Corporation Limited Mr. Gazeley was leading his company to provide global 24x7 managed security services to over 1,600 key banking and governmental organizations in 24 countries via 12 security centers located in various places in the world. Before a threat could affect any computer in the world, the system actively detected it out and alerted all the clients to stop any impact from the threat within 3 seconds. His company has won over 50 local and international awards; has been published in many international computer journals; and was pioneering in obtaining world-class security certification.

Comments from the Panel Mr. Gazeley is passionate to develop world-class security solutions in Hong Kong and for Hong Kong. He has placed a lot of investment to develop his products, as he believes that an excellent product is the pre-requisite to compete in the global market. He has deployed great passion, hard-working and patience to market the products to the first-tier clients in US, to obtain endorsement from awards and certification, and to get exposure in international media. With all the above business development efforts, he well demonstrates that Hong Kong security product has a position in the global arena.

Ms. Lam Ka Man, Dionne Senior Major Account Executive Akamai Technologies HK Limited Ms. Lam served in the telecom infrastructure industry with most of her clients coming from the financial service sectors. In her previous company, she achieved the top 10% sales achiever in worldwide. To enhance her reach-out to different market segments, she persuaded her channel partners to attend night class to learn more about the products. To fight for a segment that her company did not have advantage, she spent 18 months in communicating with all levels of her clients so as to let them know that she had the solution. Once the chance was there, she led a full team of product, consulting, partner, management and finance to get the deal.

Comments from the Panel Ms. Lam demonstrates that she is skillful in handling different types of sales projects. She has smartly used the sales strategy of channeling to widen her marketing force to cover a wide market frontage; and the strategy of early engagement to get the user buy-in in an early sales stage. With her passion and energetic attitude, she well turns things into positive even in difficult situations.

Business Development HKCS Outstanding ICT Achievement Awards 2012: Sales/ Marketing/ Business Development Category Mr. Lam Yat Fung, Alvin Founder & Group CEO PacificLink iMedia Group Mr. Lam drove his company to be one of the largest digital agencies in Hong Kong with 200 staff in 7 offices in Shanghai, Beijing and Taiwan, which served around 20% of first-tier branded client sectors in the region. To ensure a fast growth of the company, he sought and executed a number of merging and acquisition deals in Asia and also reengineered the operational efficiency of his member companies. His member companies served different segments around the digital era, including web, mobile and social media platforms; and maintained 25% growth in operating profits in the past 9 years.

Comments from the Panel Mr. Lam has a good vision to develop his company to grasp various opportunities in the digital era. He also has a good tactic to merge and acquire companies of similar nature so as to achieve consolidated client base and synergy effect for a fast growth of the whole company. The company’s consistent and profitable growth, even in the bad economic times, has well demonstrated Mr. Lam’s business development talents, and his motto of “think big but deliver”.

Ms. Tsang Chi Ming, Rose Assistant Vice President, Strategic Development PCCW Solutions Limited Ms. Tsang was responsible to lead the Digital Team inside the company for new digital product and solutions development, operation of a home grown social networking platform and various new media projects for clients from both public and commercial sectors. She leveraged the internal R&D expertise to develop a virtual-cross-reality social networking platform for the users to have immersive experience in a virtual world plus some social activities in the real world. On the other hand, the platform formed a revenue stream to the company since commercial advertisers would place in-world advertisement to attract general users playing in the platform.

Comments from the Panel With previous working experience in the field of mobile entertainment and new media, Ms. Tsang’s focus and mindset are always on the user experience. With a technical R&D team under her supervision, she well plays the bridging role to merge the user requirement and the technical deployment. Owing to this synergy of bridging-up, she smartly develops new products and project ideas which are innovative but well address the real needs and concerns of the users in today’s digital world.

Business Development HKCS Outstanding ICT Achievement Awards 2012: Consulting Category

Mr. Pun Sai Lit, Roy Associate Partner, IBM Global Business Services IBM China/ Hong Kong Ltd.

Mr Pun was responsible for leading the implementation of a new student information system in The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) to cope with the changes led by Hong Kong’s 3+3+4 Education Reform. The new system is to manage the entire student lifecycle, allowing CUHK to better cater to student needs throughout their studies and after graduation. The project involved the implementation of campus solutions and the integration with the existing IT applications, lasted for a period of 27 months with the collaboration of stakeholder groups including admission and registration offices, faculties and colleges, professors/ teachers, students, IT, and other administrative and service units. The system was launched on time within budget as planned and made the project the first of its kind in higher education sector within China and Hong Kong.

Comments from the Panel Although Mr. Pun was new to the higher education sector, he well used his consulting skills and talents learnt from other large-scale projects to handle this large-scale project. He firstly studied the practice of local universities, the culture of university stakeholders and the impact of new 334 education reform so as to form background knowledge. He then worked with various global partners to obtain expert views and practical insights on university operations and management practice in admission/ teaching/ research; and to consolidate a view on the global trend of similar university systems. With all these knowledge, he well communicated with different stakeholders and obtained their understanding, involvement and commitment, which was the key success factor for this complicated project.

Management HKCS Outstanding ICT Achievement Awards 2012: Project Management Category

Mr. Chan Wai Bong, Jacky IT Programme Manager The Hong Kong Jockey Club Mr. Chan was responsible for leading six delivery teams composed of over 80 internal and vendor staff to design and implement the integrated system for the 1000-seat IP-based Telebet Center in Tin Shui Wai. The Center is able to handle over 26,000 calls in 15 minutes and is one of the busiest and most complicated contact centers in Asia Pacific. He, as the project manager, had partnered with multiple parties since the project formation to plan for the best-of-breed but cost-effective technologies that could be integrated for the centre operations and monitored and mitigated the risks throughout the project. This high-profile project was successfully delivered in 18 months, with good quality and within budget. On the community side, Mr. Chan received a number of overseas delegations to share the success factors behind this technical and community project.

Comments from the Panel As a young project manager, Mr. Chan has well handled the complicated project with various stakeholders (property, IT and Telebet Centre) and a lot of technical components (call centre software, voice recording, cabling in carpark environment, capability in handing huge amount of calls at peak 15-minute, etc.). With his skills and passion, the project was delivered on-time, on budget, with quality, and with high satisfaction from the users. Mr. Chan has shown great personal commitment in ensuring a success of the project.

Mr. Chiu Shin Hang, Anthony Senior Systems Manager Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, The Government of the HKSAR Mr. Chiu was responsible for enhancing the service quality of OGCIO data centres via obtaining ISO 20000 accreditations, implementing the first government private cloud and running the data centres in a green way. As the project manager, he tackled the challenges to mobilize a large data centre team of over 90 colleagues to work in a new way, and to overcome various technical limitations due to aged data centre facilities of around 20 years old. As a result of the project initiatives, the cost of system resources was reduced by 20-30% and the average power effectiveness improved by 30%. On the community side, Mr. Chiu participated in OGCIO’s Professional Practice Community and spoke in local IT management conferences to promote the best practices of IT services management.

Comments from the Panel Mr. Chiu well demonstrates his stakeholder management skills via communication with his staff and other internal clients; and his quality management skills via deploying various templates in ensuring quality of system deliverables. Moreover, his effort in this project fosters an exemplar effect to the planning and development of other large-scale government cloud projects in the coming years.

Management HKCS Outstanding ICT Achievement Awards 2012: Project Management Category

Mr. Philip Lansley Chief Manager (Business Supporting Systems) Hong Kong Hospital Authority Mr. Lansley was responsible for the replacement of multiple long-standing and customized systems with integrated ERP software across the whole of the Hospital Authority. The new system implementation covered over 10,000 users, 59,000 employees and on-site vendor teams of over 40 consultants. As the Project Manager, he acted as the focal point for managing and controlling all the implementation stages, from tender issue and award, through the implementation steps of design and development, user engagement, testing and subsequent Go Live. This required co-ordination of all internal stakeholders and multiple vendors. On the community side, Mr. Lansley has spoken at a number of international conferences and hosted over 40 reference site visits to share his project management experience in this type of complex project.

Comments from the Panel Mr. Lansley has solid and professional project management experience in handling complicated projects, especially those high-profile and high-risk government ones. He well uses governance framework and risk methodology to monitor different implementation stages and manage user expectations from various stakeholders. Moreover, his credibility, hard-working and EQ are the key to make him handle those projects successfully.

Mr. Tang Sui Cheong, Eric Senior Project Manager Hewlett-Packard HK SAR Limited Mr. Tang was responsible for implementing a total solution of library system, infrastructure and environment setup and RFID facilities for Hong Kong Public Libraries. The project involved implementation of altogether 66 branch libraries and 10 mobile libraries with over 61 million checkout and renewal transactions per year and a collection of over 12 million items. As the project manager, Mr. Tang worked with various vendors in different areas, such as the new library package solution, data expertise of the existing and new systems, and RFID expertise, etc. Moreover, since the system was involving the mass general public, the 3-day system cutover period posed a great challenge to the project management in coordinating all involved parties.

Comments from the Panel Mr. Tang has good communication talents in bridging up various parties from the user side, the software package side and the data conversion experts in order to build up a harmony co-operative environment for carrying out the project. Moreover, to ensure a smooth 3-day cutover of such a large system that involves the mass general public, detail planning and commitment from all team members is a must. Mr. Tang has done a good project management job to make it happened.

Innovation HKCS Outstanding ICT Achievement Awards 2012: Innovation Category

Dr. Fok Wai Ping, Apple General Manager Active & Independent Education Limited With her background as a school teacher and her PhD research in the field of “IT in Education”, Dr. Fok created a full-scale e-education platform which was composed of a comprehensive set of IT tools and infrastructure for the school teachers to design, manage and share the school-based curricula and e-learning resources. Moreover, the platform deployed a unique e-pedagogical approach to provide a blended learning curriculum framework with the corresponding e-learning contents and activities being able to be stored, shared, and evolved effectively. The platform was being used by over 60 primary schools and 35,000 students in various subjects.

Comments from the Panel Dr. Fok demonstrates her outstanding efforts and innovation in deploying appropriate information technologies in developing a comprehensive e-learning platform for the schools to be able to design their own contents, share the contents with the community, and deploy the contents into various teaching styles that the teachers prefer. Especially in today’s e-learning environment and the community need to cut the book costs, the platform well shows the capability of ICT and innovation in addressing a social issue effectively.

Dr. Fung Kai Hung Consultant Radiologist Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital By skillfully using a commercial available medical 3D rendering software, Dr. Fung invented a new color 3D rendering technique, named “Rainbow Technique” utilizing contour lines in rainbows of colors. He also developed stereoscopic 3D visualization of CT scans and virtual inside view of human anatomy creating a new approach to medical data visualization that can be useful for surgical planning. His technique can transform CT scans into fine art achieving a seamless integration of art & science. His work is “beautiful yet informative”.

Comments from the Panel Dr. Fung innovatively uses commercial software to process the huge amount of medical data stored in the CT slices, dig out the hidden information and generate excellent datadriven visual effects for medical visualization and visual art enjoyment. With software and data are already there for a long time, Dr. Fung well demonstrates his out-of-box thinking approach to invent a technique for both serious and enjoyable purposes, which is an outstanding case of innovation in the ICT community.

Innovation HKCS Outstanding ICT Achievement Awards 2012: Innovation Category

Ms. Nan Ka Yin, Jessica Senior Consultant Hong Kong Productivity Council

Ms. Nan initiated and implemented the idea of an interactive preventive education and publicity program that was funded by Beat Drugs Fund. The project used emerging social media tools with online facilitator and game learning technologies to reach the post-80 generations that previously could not be reached by traditional communication and media channels. With over 0.25m users participated in the program, which was a good result among societal programs by the government, the program generated an exemplar effect to other Beat Drugs education programs and other youth outreaching projects. Follow-up meetings with NGOs were conducted for sharing the lessons learnt and the youth outreach experience in today’s digital era.

Comments from the Panel Ms. Nan demonstrates her insight and innovation in using appropriate information technologies and communication protocols to reach the young generation today. The graphic design, the concept design and the deployment of online facilitator further make the program attractive and “like� by the young people. The program achieves a good campaign result and fosters a market trend for other similar projects to model after.

Achiever Award HKCS Outstanding ICT Achievement Awards 2012: Young ICT Achiever Award

Mr. Chan Yik Hei, Stark CEO Bull-B Limited Mr. Chan started ICT researches in his secondary education and won a number of international engineering awards. The various interesting ICT applications included intelligent security robot, driver safety system, health monitoring watch, smart home solution, etc. At the age of 22 today, after his graduation from university, he runs his own company in providing mobile applications for catering and wedding industries. Besides his own business, Mr. Chan keeps his own passion in mentoring and coaching young students to join in overseas ICT competitions and study missions. He also leads the Hong Kong Chapter of an US-based founder association for walking with other young founders in the ICT journey.

Comments from the Panel There is no need to mention his achievements as a young person in the ICT field. His humble attitude is much appreciated. He says that he is not clever but just works hard and simply believes that nothing is impossible just depending on how much you want. His positive thinking makes him to turn an adverse environment to be a driving force and a free space for pushing himself to grow. He is not just thinking but really putting his dream in action, as he believes that dream will never come true without action.

Mr. Cheng Man Fai, Jordan Lecturer Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Shatin) Starting from his academic years in tertiary education, Mr. Cheng placed a lot of his own efforts in ICT researches and won a number of ICT Awards in various local, mainland and international competitions. Four years after his graduation from CUHK, he is a lecturer at IVE but still devotes most of his time in leading and coaching his students in winning regional ICT competitions, especially in the areas of robotics and mobile apps. Mr. Cheng also acts as consultant to a number of local ICT companies in order to contribute his ideas and knowledge to the industry and develop his personal network in paving a path for staring his own business in the future.

Comments from the Panel Mr. Cheng has great passion to develop himself in the field of ICT when he was in the student age and actually achieved an outstanding result to pave a road for his own development. More importantly, he continues his passion and focuses his efforts in developing his students in the same direction. He well uses his own experience as a role model for the younger generation. His students’ winning awards are a good proof for his effort, passion and brave to dream.

Dr. Ting Siu Lun, Jacky Systems Specialist PCCW Solutions Limited

Since the final year of his undergraduate study, Dr. Ting became enthusiastic on ICT, especially in RFID and healthcare management system. In his PhD years, he won a number of RFID-related awards and worked with a medical service company for developing healthcare system. At the age of 27 today, after the award of his PhD, he works in the industry for practicing his RFID and data-mining knowledge in various commercial sectors. Moreover, he actively shares his project experiences and knowledge with others through delivery of lectures and publication of academic papers. He serves as a Guest Lecturer at his alma mater and has published 26 academic papers and spoke in 12 ICT-related international ICT conferences so far.

Comments from the Panel Dr. Ting’s dream is to develop a better living environment for the community. He well uses his passion and efforts in realizing his dream by deepening his knowledge and expertise in the field of medical informatics, all the way from studying to working in the industry. He believes that there must be a meeting point between innovation ideas and real applications. The meeting point is exactly where his efforts target to in the past and the coming years.
