SO THE MAJORITY OF THE COUNTRY HAS SPOKEN, AND THE TORY GOVERNMENT TAKE US INTO BREXIT, AND AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE. WHAT THIS DOES TO THE MOTOR INDUSTRY IS UNSURE AS THE HARD BREXIT STILL LOOMS WHICH COULD BE DEVASTATING FOR THE PLANT MANUFACTURERS THAT ARE LEFT AND CROSS BORDER SUPPLY CHAINS. When most power steering racks are made in Germany, Electronic control Units come from Romania and Shock Absorbers from Poland, plus over half the 30,000 other parts (that make up a car) come from elsewhere, you can see the scale of what is involved. It could spur the manufacturers to invest in a UK manufacturing production line, Like French bumper company Plastic Omnium, who set up operations in Britain after a promise from Jaguar Land Rover for the supply to the Range Rover Velar but this would take huge investment, and to what outcome.

P44 DELPHI Quality sells itself. And when it comes to steering nothing could be truer. Whilst it might be tempting to go for a cheaper, lower quality, and possibly quicker sale, factors and retailers could be missing out on important commercial opportunities, and even putting the consumer’s safety at risk.

BOSCH PLANS TO ACQUIRE UNIPART’S AUTOPARTS GARAGE PROGRAMMES These programmes include the Unipart Car Care Centres (UCCC), a network of independently run garages, the KiS online garage management software, which helps to organise all daily workshop activities, and the Unipartner Consumer App. It is planned for all existing customer contracts to be transferred to Bosch. Steffen Hoffmann, President Bosch UK and Ireland, commented: “This acquisition perfectly fits with our growth strategy for the United Kingdom and Ireland. It is a significant step that increases our network of partner garages creating new sales channels for our automotive parts, diagnostics, and workshop services with these customers.” Established in 1995, Uniparts’ Car Care Centres are said to be one of the most recognised workshop programmes in the UK and are committed to high standards of work, quality and customer care. Bosch will take over the marketing support and training services for the garages plus ensure access to Bosch’s full range of automotive parts, diagnostics and workshop services.

The KiS online platform has been enhanced consistently since it was launched in 1992. The Unipartner Consumer App enables car owners to manage key aspects of vehicle ownership such as MOT, Road Tax, Insurance and Servicing due dates, to ensure they stay legal and safe. It also directly connects the consumer with the UCCC’s and Bosch Car Service networks at the touch of a button for all their service and repair needs. Robert Hilbert, Head for the Bosch Automotive Aftermarket division in the UK, added: “Robert Bosch has been at the forefront in offering servicing, repair and diagnostics

services to car drivers via its global network of premium independent workshops, Bosch Car Service, for almost 100 years. We are very excited to increase our UK footprint in the Independent Aftermarket with these new garage partners and are very much looking forward in welcoming our new colleagues from Unipart to Bosch”. Following a detailed strategic review, the Unipart Group board recently decided to identify a partner that could take their Programmes business to the next level and Bosch was deemed the right strategic partner. Mike Ferris, Unipart International Managing Director, explained: “We’ve been working in close partnership with Bosch for many years on a number of joint initiatives and they share many of Unipart’s core values and principles. I am delighted that the Unipart Autoparts Garage Programmes will be transferring to a trusted business in Bosch who will further develop the programmes, whilst maintaining the needs of the garage and consumer at the forefront of their plans” It has been agreed that the purchase price will not be disclosed.

GS YUASA OFFERS SUPPORT TO HOMELESS GROUP The batteries will be used to power a bus, which provides shelter for homeless people in and around Newport. Led by Ian Smith and his wife Tammy, H.O.P.E aims to help rough sleepers in the Newport area by offering them somewhere safe to stay. The team consists exclusively of volunteers and relied on donations from their local community to repurpose a former London bus. With 12 beds, showering facilities and a fully kitted-out kitchen, the bus offers temporary refuge as well as space to socialise. Ian and Tammy, along with other representatives from the group, visited GS Yuasa’s factory in Ebbw Vale earlier this month. GS Yuasa Battery Sales UK Ltd Technical Services Manager for Automotive and Motorcycle products, Peter Whittaker, was on hand to offer advice and to help fit the two SHD commercial vehicle (CV) batteries. The battery manufacturer also donated one of its Yuasa smart chargers to maintain the batteries performance. This is said to reduce the need for reconditioning via the

JANUARY 2020

bus’s alternator-driven charging system – allowing the bus to remain in the places it’s needed most. Ian, Founder of the group, said: “GS Yuasa have been established in the area for years and we approached them in the hope they might be able to help – to say we are

overwhelmed by their support would be an understatement! Their donation will allow us to continue to provide somewhere safe to stay for those who need it most.” The Yuasa YBX5625 SHD is specifically designed for use in heavy-duty applications such as commercial vehicles. Its low selfdischarge rate and maintenance free design reportedly make it the perfect solution for H.O.P.E. It’s part of the four-tiered Yuasa YBX SHD range which provides one of the most comprehensive and highest specification offers on the market. Peter added: “We’re delighted to be able to support H.O.P.E – it’s such a worthwhile cause and one we’re proud to get on board with. Yuasa batteries have long been the go-to choice in unique and super heavy duty applications making them the perfect choice to power H.O.P.E’s incredible work.”

NGK ANNOUNCES SPEEDWAY SPONSORSHIP The manufacturer has built up a successful relationship with the club over the past few years and has hosted numerous clients and customers at the Monmore Green venue on race nights. It has also backed individual meetings such as the NGK Spark Plugs Olympique – which will return in 2020 as a season farewell. Mark Hallam, Marketing Manager at NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd, said: “We are delighted to announce that we will continue to sponsor Wolves throughout the 2020 season. Speedway is a family sport that is followed by many of our customers and I’m sure they will be looking forward to what will hopefully be another exciting season for the team.”

Parrys International Wolves Promoter, Chris Van Straaten, added: “To have the

backing of a prestigious international company like NGK Spark Plugs is a terrific testament both to the club and the sport of Speedway. “We’re delighted to be working with them again in 2020 and thank them again for their backing and support.” In 2020, all the team’s riders’ bikes will be fitted with NGK spark plugs and the NGK logo will feature on their leathers as well as on the Monmore Green safety fence. The company will also supply the riders with pit bike mats and other merchandise.

DVSA ANNOUNCES CONNECTED EQUIPMENT UPDATES The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has said that MOT garages will soon see the benefits of more equipment that connects directly to the MOT testing service. From 1 February 2020, anyone buying a new or replacement decelerometer for class 3, 4, 5 or 7 test lanes will need to make sure it’s a model that can connect to the MOT testing service. This includes buying replacement equipment and as part of the process of getting authorisation to carry out MOTs at a test station. This follows the introduction of connected roller brake testers on 1 October 2019. DVSA has worked with decelerometer manufacturers to develop software that will allow their products to connect to the MOT testing service. Connected equipment will reportedly save time, reduce the risk of error in entering MOT results and help to reduce the risk of fraud. Chris Price, DVSA Head of MOT Policy, said: “DVSA’s priority is to help everyone keep their vehicle safe to drive. We’ve brought connected equipment in to modernise testing in MOT garages and reduce the potential for mistakes. “It will make testing quicker, more accurate and give motorists greater confidence in the quality of testing. Garages already using this equipment have seen benefits to their business.” DVSA has explained it will also be working with manufacturers to develop diesel smoke meters and exhaust gas

PAGE 08

analysers that connect to the MOT testing service. There are plans to make connectable models of these kinds of equipment mandatory for replacement equipment and new garages later in 2020. DVSA states that connectable equipment is not necessarily more expensive than the current equipment garages already have. The difference between a connectable and nonconnectable model is often its software. This means that non-connectable equipment

models can be made connectable by a software update to allow it to connect to the MOT testing service. MOT garage managers are being encouraged by the DVSA to investigate the benefits of connected equipment and understand how it will help the testing process in their workplace. Investing in connected equipment will reportedly improve the efficiency of garages and help futureproof businesses.

KLARIUS DIRECTORS CLEARED OF CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES Claims had been brought against them by competitors and an investigation had been carried out by the Department for Transport. All have, however, been formally acquitted and found ‘not guilty’, without a trial even starting. The Crown Court Judge reportedly referred to a “shambolic failure” and ruled that no member of the team should stand trial. Klarius was said to have self-reported problems in 2014 and worked with the VCA through to the end of 2015 to rectify production and administrative issues. The VCA reportedly found no intentional misconduct and praised Klarius for its co-operation, openness and unfettered access at all levels.

In his ruling the Judge reportedly referred to individuals from two competitor companies who sought to make commercial gain from the situation. The Department for Transport

indicated that it could not pursue the case and invited the Judge to acquit all five defendants. Paul Schofield, Solicitor acting for Tony Wilson, commented: “Today’s ruling marks the end of a case we have always maintained was completely misguided, unfair and inappropriate.” Anthony Barnfather, a leading Manchester Lawyer, who also instructed in the case, added: “This is one of the most unjust prosecutions I have ever come across. After years of being wrongly accused the directors can now get back to business without a stain on their characters.”

MOT GARAGES INCREASINGLY FUNDED BY MERCHANT CASH ADVANCES According to the direct lender, MOT garages feature eighth in the list of most frequent clients for this type of fast and flexible funding.

JANUARY 2020

In addition, 365 Business Finance has reportedly witnessed a 40% increase in MOT test centre customers in the last 12 months. When it comes to getting the finance to

grow their businesses, many garages and vehicle repair workshops are said to be turned down by high street banks or are required to secure loans against their business or property, supply business plans and commit to lengthy terms. A merchant cash advance from 365 Business Finance has been designed to match businesses’ cash flows, with repayments taken as a small percentage of debit and credit card sales, so the funding is only paid back when customers pay them. The cost is fixed up-front regardless of how long it takes to pay, with no late fees or hidden costs. 365 Business Finance Managing Director, Andrew Raphaely, said: “We’ve seen strong growth in demand from MOT garages as they seek funding for expansion, to acquire new equipment and stock, or to keep on top of cash flow. These business owners are increasingly looking for alternative finance and a merchant cash advance offers a fast, flexible solution. Unlike a traditional bank loan, repayments are taken as a small percentage of their card sales, so they only pay back the funding when their customers pay them.” 365 Business Finance funds UK businesses with merchant cash advances from £5,000 to £200,000. Eligible businesses must have been trading for six months and take at least £5,000 per month in debit and credit card transactions.

IAAF CALLS FOR FAIR DIGITALISATION OPPORTUNITIES It will aim to urge the European Commission to introduce legislation that ensures fair remote access to in-vehicle date and functional resources. The coalition of European federations – representing parts distributors, independent garages, insurers, data publishers, component and equipment suppliers, tyre suppliers, emergency breakdown associations, lease companies, oil and lubricants suppliers, consumers and SME representatives – argues that a legislative solution that ensures access will not only enable innovation but would also improve customer choice in the automotive aftermarket. Moreover, access to this vehicle data is said to be essential in allowing for effective competition within the market and enabling the EU to become a front runner in connected and autonomous mobility and related services. The new manifesto argues that independent operators need four key abilities – subject (where relevant) to the consent of the driver/owner of the vehicle – in order to provide competitive, innovative services and digital solutions to their customers.

These abilities are: • Independent and direct real-time access to in-vehicle generated data that is not monitored by vehicle manufacturers, including those which are time critical • Bi-directional communication with the vehicle and its functions, independent from the vehicle manufacturer; • Safe, secure and independent remote interaction with the driver, using the invehicle human-machine interface functions (e.g. via the dashboard or voice commands); • Independent software running directly in the connected vehicle using onboard capabilities to process any dynamically generated data as closely as possible to its source. However, these would reportedly not be possible with the model put forward by vehicle manufacturers, the so-called ‘Extended Vehicle’, which will channel all future communication and data access through the VM’s backend server. As such, this would prevent all other service providers ‘around the car’ from offering competing services to consumers, as only a small part of the vehicle generated data will be shared with independent service providers, compared to the data available to the VM.

PAGE 12

In two recent Resolutions, the European Parliament has called on the European Commission to take (legislative) action to ensure fair, secure, real time and technology neutral access to in-vehicle data for some third part entries. From a UK perspective and its withdrawal from the EU, it is said to still be vital that the UK position is taken into consideration and the new manifesto reaffirms the call for a European legislative solution by 2020 to ensure effective remote access to in-vehicle data and functional resources, which will guarantee competition, innovation, and free consumer choice. Wendy Williamson, IAAF Chief Executive, said: “We call on European and national policymakers to present a robust legislative proposal by 2020. By doing so, EU Member States would ensure a competitive services

environment and become the leader in connected and autonomous mobility and related services, while at the same time safeguarding its SME-friendly, social and green market economy and benefits to consumers. “The ability to unleash the innovative and competitive potential of the automotive servicing industry and mobility providers for their services ‘around the car’, must be allowed to continue in the future. We feel it will be detrimental to motorists if the vehicle manufacturers are able to have a monopoly on access to the vehicle’s data/functions and legislation is needed to ensure a level playing field.” The IAAF, coordinating UK activity, will continue to play a crucial role in the coming year on discussions around access to in-vehicle data and resources.

FINDING THE BALANCE BETWEEN TRADITIONAL TOOLS AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE WORKSHOP AS THE VEHICLES OF THE FUTURE BECOME MORE TECHNOLOGICALLY ADVANCED, NATURALLY, THERE IS A NEED FOR THE EQUIPMENT PURCHASED BY WORKSHOPS TO FOLLOW SUIT. While traditional parts, oils and lubricants are still very much a requirement, it’s a good idea to ensure you’re well-stocked with the technology required to cope with the evergrowing demands.

Digital demand Traditional repair jobs in the garage are by no means over – but digital technology undeniably plays a huge role in the maintenance of today’s cars and this is only set to increase. Draper Tools is one brand now offering a wide range of high-tech, electronic workshop equipment and service tools to help factors meet this demand. While you may know the brand for its hand and power tools, it also offers some exciting, new, feature-packed equipment that will appeal to customers looking to update their workshop.

PAGE 16

Essential equipment Draper Tools, which celebrated its centenary in 2019, is keen to continue offering its customers a comprehensive automotive range and is proud to introduce digital solutions such as the new Digital 3-D Four Wheel Aligner (01798). This must-have piece of equipment uses high-resolution cameras to provide

technicians with advanced alignment readings and chassis set-up information. It features a four-wheel system that gives increased accuracy to a multitude of suspension and steering requirements, essential for advanced vehicle stability systems. The Wheel Aligner is set to be a popular choice for workshops thanks to its competitive price and user-friendly features. Technicians will also be impressed by its cloud-based technology and extensive vehicle database which automatically compares the latest technical specifications with vehicle manufacturers recommendations. It’s so simple to operate, guiding technicians through the measuring process, ensuring cars operate with maximum efficiency, comfort and safety. Plus, it offers free automatic system updates, free vehicle data updates and free technical assistance.

Problem-solving tech Workshop technology that makes life easier for technicians on the job is a top consideration too, with equipment such as the Draper Expert Semi-Automatic Tyre Changer (78612) also proving popular. It’s capable of removing and replacing tyres on wheels up to 26”. However, what will really appeal to customers is the assist arm (or ‘third arm’) it’s fitted with, which helps technicians when faced with modern run-flat tyre technology and ultra-low-profile tyres. This impressive piece of kit features a fully motorised turntable, pneumatically operated clamping jaws, powerful pneumatic bead breaker and tilt column to simplify the changing of low profile and run flat tyres quickly and easily, preventing damage to the alloy wheels.

Added value Diagnostic tablets are another technologyled area where it’s advisable to have strong offering for your customers. Look out for models that offer technicians value, such as the Draper Expert Diagnostic & Electronic Service Tablet (12044), which has no lock out or catch up fees and comes with 12 months of free updates.

Tech vs traditional Vehicles these days are more than cars, they’re becoming smart devices, which in turn means repair techniques are becoming more technologically advanced. Workshops face a challenge keeping up with these latest developments and balancing this with traditional skills and repair knowledge. Motor Factors can help their customers by having a strong, up-to-date offering in both areas, whether it’s the fundamentals like socket sets and jacks, or digital solutions for the workshop.

This exciting move has enabled us to widen our reach and further strengthen our position as the region’s leading supplier of commercial vehicle parts, offering a service that is unparalleled. Picksons and Fleetwheel are members of the Independent Components Distributors (ICD) national supply group, which has been a major factor in the Group’s development, allowing national contracts to be serviced at a local level. They are both also members of the Independent Motor Trade Factors Associated (IFA) buying group, ensuring they get the best market deals and pricing, which is then passed onto their customers.

003 I

Our History - Picksons The Pick family has been involved in the motor trade since the late 1940’s, after the end of the Second World War. Percy Pick started his car sales and service business in the village of Old Sodbury, before moving and opening the very successful Roman Camps service station on the busy A46 in the 1950’s, which at the time was the main northsouth route through Gloucestershire. In the summer months, it was common for the garage to be open 24 hours and the attached cafe run by Joyce Pick was a popular meeting place. This was supplemented with the addition of tipper trucks and minibuses throughout the 1950’s and 60’s. During the late 1970’s, whilst working in the family haulage business, Colin Pick (Percy’s son) realised there was a demand for a dedicated parts department to service not only the family’s own trucks and workshops, but also other truck owners and workshops in the area. Picksons began trading on 1st January 1979 as an offshoot of the family business, P.D. Pick & Sons. This was located in Quarry Road in Chipping Sodbury and it was running around 15 tippers out of local quarries at the time. With hard work and perseverance Picksons developed and grew, building relationships and trust with customers, and it wasn’t long before Picksons became the core focus of the family business. The haulage and maintenance side of the business stopped and by the early 1980’s Picksons had become solely a parts-based business.

004 I

Mixed fortunes over the next 20 years saw periods of growth and downturn as the economy fluctuated, but the dedication to customer service and belief in the business stayed strong. In October 2001 the company expanded and opened a second depot in Avonmouth. This proved very successful and within a few years the depot had outgrown its premises and so moved to the current location in Burcott Road. Continued growth led to the opportunity and opening of a third branch in Gloucester in 2012, a fourth branch followed in 2013 at Bridgwater, a fifth in 2016 in central Bristol and a sixth at Swindon in March 2017. Picksons’ Head Office in Chipping Sodbury also outgrew the premises, so in 2014 moved from Quarry Road to Great Western Business Park, Yate, where it is currently based. In July 2014, Picksons completed the purchase of the controlling share of Fleetwheel Ltd. Based in Cardiff and with five depots across South Wales, Fleetwheel are Wales’ number one commercial parts distributor. The merger has further strengthened the position of both companies and the Picksons Group as a whole. In 2018, we opened a wholesale paint and refinishing division – Farbex Ltd. This is an exciting new venture for us and given our vast existing customer base of fleets and vehicle repairers, this move will add to our all-round product and service offering. Now in its third generation and celebrating 40 years of trading, the Pick family are still very much involved in the business. We are constantly looking to the future and as such we are planning to open our 12th branch in 2019, located in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, to the south of Birmingham.

005 005I I

Our History - Fleetwheel Truck and bus operators in South Wales will be familiar with the successful Fleetwheel specialist motor factor group, but might not know that the company is now part of the Picksons family. The two groups joined forces in 2014, seeing geographical, practical and logistical advantages in pooling their resources, and the end result is an elegant business and commercial fit, giving further economies of scale and buying power advantages that can only aid their customers. Fleetwheel was founded in 1975 by Colin Russell and David Wheeler from a shop premises on Newport’s Commercial Road. With backgrounds in the commercial vehicle friction industry, both realised that there was an opportunity to supply a full range of parts to local truck and bus fleet operators. After a period of steady growth and consolidation, a second branch was opened in Cardiff to meet growing demand. By now, selling front rank OE product, further expansion saw the opening of a third depot in Swansea in the mid 1980s, and the company now boasts five branches. Today Fleetwheel is one of the UK’s major commercial vehicle parts suppliers, with a turnover in excess of £10 million. It is a founder member of the ICD supply group, which has been a major factor in its service provision, allowing national contracts to be overseen locally. Fleetwheel is also an IFA buying group member, so it benefits from the best supply deals. The Fleetwheel brand remains strong, and thanks to intelligent merging of many back office functions and a shared ethos, this Welsh institution and Picksons are a perfect fit.

ICD The Picksons Group are members of the Independent Components Distributors (ICD), a national group supplying quality truck, bus, trailer and light van parts nationwide. They provide on-demand fast delivery from over 80 depots and have nearly 1,000 delivery vans across the UK. When a commercial vehicle suffers a component failure hundreds of miles from its home base, this poses an acute problem for its operators, but as a member of the ICD supply group, Picksons can swiftly deal with any out-of-area problems. This is because the ICD boasts a nationwide membership of specialist motor factors, sharing excellent communications and stock information from its depots, allowing the right original equipment quality CV and PSV parts to be on their way quickly and efficiently. This is backed up by a complete package of business enhancement services, including management information and central invoicing facilities. The ICD’s Parts Assist Scheme means that if you break down anywhere across the country we can help with parts, as well as local repairers if that’s what you need. ICD has been a major factor in Picksons Group’s development, allowing national contracts to be serviced at a local level. Training and Apprenticeships Vehicle logistics and parts is a complex business. This means training the next generation of motor factor experts has never been more important. That is why Picksons has joined forces with Reaseheath College and the Independent Motor Trade Factors Associated body to create the UK’s first bespoke commercial vehicle parts apprenticeship course. Commercial vehicle motor factoring skills tend to be found at dealership level but inevitably this means knowledge is concentrated on particular truck makers. This course is designed to provide across-the-board expertise, together with the back office and logistical skills essential for Picksons’ demanding customer base. CHASSIS CHECK FOR WINTER SEASON PREVENTS EXPENSIVE REPAIRS THE VEHICLES IN WHICH WE TRAVEL ARE SUBJECTED TO A GREAT DEAL OF STRESS; WITH INCREASINGLY LONG JOURNEYS TAKEN AS MORE AND MORE OF US TAKE TO THE ROAD IN OUR FREE TIME. In the UK, 2017 saw a boost in domestic holidays, with VisitEngland reporting a 3% increase in visits between January and August – and over 33 million trips taken (i). Furthermore, in 2018 250 billion UK road miles were travelled by car and taxi (ii). Longhaul journeys, particularly with the extra weight of holiday luggage, place a particularly heavy burden on the vehicle. In addition, the UK’s roads are often in poor condition. Suspension springs, dampers and chassis parts are subjected to extreme conditions as a result. Driving into the countryside and across mountainous regions also pushes your brakes to the limit and often also to the wear limit. After the holidays it pays to check the vehicle is winter ready. Checking the parts which make up the chassis system - following the holiday season and in readiness for the winter weather - is essential as even slight damage or wear to braking, steering & suspension parts can lead to expensive follow-up repairs due to the

corrosion that salt and grit can cause. The following scenarios illustrate the most common causes of damage; highlighting what workshops should look for as standard best practice. Example 1: If a stone thrown up damages a steering cuff, water and salt can enter the joints of the steering rod and the steering gear. As a result, the rack corrodes and rubs with the rough surface the seal through to the steering cylinder. Oil loss and a failure of the power steering are imminent. Even electric steering systems are not spared damage, as corroded parts can cause noise, stiffness and other problems. Example 2: The piston rod of the vibration damper and the suspension spring also suffer from small stones or splinter damage. Small craters in the chrome of the piston rod can damage the seals, which leads to oil leakage in the damper and thus to a loss of damping effect. In the case of the suspension spring, local rust spots can weaken the component and

in the long term, the spring can break at this point. Example 3: When it comes to brakes, the service consultant should not only pay attention to the wear condition of the components, but also to the scoring on the disc as small stones and grit can get trapped between the brake disc and the brake block. ZF Aftermarket provides full service support. With its brands Lemförder, Sachs, and TRW, the Aftermarket Organization is the fullrange supplier for chassis: The range includes steering systems, chassis and steering components, shock absorbers, disc and drum brakes, and rubber-to-metal parts. Through its ZF [pro]Tech concept the business also supports the aftermarket with technical information, installation instructions and technical training. And with the ZF pro[Points] bonus program, garages can collect points every time they buy ZF spare parts.

STEER YOUR BUSINESS THE RIGHT WAY QUALITY SELLS ITSELF. With some simple advice from leading steering manufacturer Delphi Technologies, you’ll be able to upsell your way to a more profitable business.

PAGE 44

Why it’s important to sell quality steering parts A car's steering and suspension system is an intricate network of linked components designed to provide a smooth, stable, and critically, safe ride. Since this system is also typically the first affected when it comes to road

abuse, those same parts can be the first to wear out or even fail. And if and when this happens, the implications can be best case concerning, worst case, dangerous. Worn or inferior quality parts can severely compromise the vehicles stability, control and handling, putting the occupant’s safety at risk.

PAGE 45

Same goes for the ball joint. A common cause of ball joint failure is the splitting of its rubber boot. When this happens, water, salt and dirt penetrate and damage the joints internal components. Replacing only the boot could seal in these substances, resulting in accelerated wear and corrosion. Although it might be a quick fix, next time recommend replacing the entire ball joint. Steering accessories are also susceptible to wear and tear and should be fitted as new with every job. Whilst used components may appear to be in good condition, exposure to dirt, corrosion, extreme temperatures etc will reduce both their tension and function. Using old components can lead to early failures resulting in a return of the vehicle and unhappy customers.

Demonstrate that you’re up-to-date with the latest steering technology

As well as affecting safety and performance, lower quality steering and suspension parts can also accelerate wear and tear on other parts of the vehicle causing unnecessary expense. For example, excessive play and movement in the system can cause additional tyre wear. Poor steering alignment can cause the wheels to drag, reducing engine efficiency and in turn, fuel economy. The list goes on. For these very reasons, you’ll want to sell a quality steering brand, such as Delphi Technologies. Every Delphi steering part undergoes rigorous dimension, material, durability and performance tests to ensure it performs just like the OE, and is therefore up to the job.

JANUARY 2020

Best practice installation: generating additional sales Knowing why it’s important to fit a quality steering part is a great starting point, however having a good technical insight will stand you in even better stead. By understanding how to install a part, you’ll know why and importantly which parts need replacing for an effective repair. Take the tie rod end. They can wear out due to impact, regular use on uneven roads, or even age, yet in most cases its actually the bushing that wears out first. Despite this, you should always encourage your customer to replace the complete unit, versus just the bushing, as metal fatigue can also cause the tie rod end to fail.

With electronic stability programmes comes a whole host of other electronic components that will all require servicing. These represent another opportunity for factors to demonstrate their steering expertise. Take the steering angle sensor. On most modern vehicles, it is now necessary to reset them after performing a wheel alignment or replacing a component that can alter the toe and thrust angle. This can be as simple as having the wheel turned from lock to lock and then centered and cycling the key or a quick test drive. Others vehicles may require a complex recalibration with a diagnostic tool. Similarly, when replacing the control arm on vehicles fitted with the latest adaptive headlight technology, technicians will need to remember to transfer, refit and reset the old self-levelling sensor to restore the projectors back to their factory positioning. Whilst these procedures may not necessarily result in additional sales, sharing your expertise, is a great way of building relationships and providing a quality service, which will hopefully result in repeat business. Delphi Technologies offers a comprehensive steering portfolio including wishbones, tie rod ends, link stabalisers and ball joints, all backed by a three year/36,000mile warranty. By stocking a range of these components and having a good product knowledge, factors and retailers will be well placed to service all steering related failures, generating greater revenue, profit and customer loyalty.
