PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Good Day - I Hope Everyone is Well, Business is Booming!

T

here is a real good reason that ALCA is one of the Top 10 Trade Organizations in the state. YOU! Members, Associate Members, Volunteers, Board Members, and our Growing Staff at the ALCA Office. YOU, the membership and sponsors continue to completely amaze me. This year’s 2022 Sky Blu Underwood Golf Tournament was nothing less than a huge success! Thanks to all of you who came out to support ALCA’s Annual Golf Tournament. We had 39 golf teams and 18 vendors that filled the course with exhibits on all the holes. Proceeds from the tournament generated a record breaking $ 30,043. The revenue benefits the Sky Blu Underwood Scholarship Fund. The funds assist qualified individuals who are pursuing a formal education in the Green Industry.

THANK YOU again to our sponsors and congratulations to the winners! Summer is here, remind your staff to stay well hydrated and watch over each other. Thoughts for the upcoming months: • Prepare now for the summer storms (minimize your losses) • Continue to design Water Efficient Landscapes (water restrictions are coming) • Plan for material shortages (anything concrete or with a computer chip) • Plan driving routes for efficiency (high fuel cost KILL profits) Dwight Faires 2022 ALCA President

We may all know these things, but we should remind our employees and educate them. Their efforts will help you all succeed. I am looking forward to this year's Awards Program. Applications have been submitted. It will be a great program at a new venue. We will look forward to seeing you all there in November! Remember, make time to spend with family and friends and put them first. This crazy thing we call LIFE and our JOBS, will consume you. Remember those you care for and go make some memories! The work will always be there. Until Next Time, Dwight Faires, President

About Sky Blu Underwood…

Forty-eight years ago, Sky Blu Underwood was born in Phoenix, Arizona. His roots sprouted deep in the Arizona agricultural industry. It is no surprise; Sky grew up naturally embedded in the landscaping arena. When Sky was old enough, he worked for his father, Bob Underwood, the owner of AAA Landscape. Sadly, Sky’s life was cut short. He did not have the opportunity to complete his education or career in the landscaping industry. Twenty-eight years ago, his father, Bob Underwood, established the Sky Blu Underwood Scholarship Fund. Bob wanted to honor his son and continue working on planting seeds that will support the pipeline of talent and maintain a thriving Green Industry in years to come.

CEO’S MESSAGE

Apples to Apples

M

any businesses and individuals are part of ALCA in hopes of receiving one specific benefit or achieving one goal, only to find that the organization has many more benefits and holds much more opportunity than they expected. While we are returning to in-person gatherings with educational trainings, committee meetings and networking events where members can learn, exchange ideas and create relationships; I find many other various requests from members. So, when members expressed their concern and puzzlement when losing a bid to a much Judy Gausman significantly lower bid, the ALCA Board thought it ALCA CEO would be a benefit to the members and community managers to introduce a standardized Request for Proposal (RFP) that could also be used as a maintenance contract. In our competitive landscaping world, some companies think that the best way to win on price is to figure out what price their competitors will bid and try to come in below that. Is that landscape contractor at risk to lose money. Is the client comparing apples to apples, or apples to oranges? In effort to level the playing field, a standardized Request for Proposal and cost sheet were developed where the client can see the itemized list of services the landscape contractor is bidding on and compare against other landscape contractors on the same itemized list. Viola! - Apples to Apples! Once the maintenance contract is in place, the expectations of the contractor and client are aligned using the itemized list they have agreed upon. ALCA remains dedicated to helping landscape contractors by providing effective business practices. Our hope is that, you will find the Request for Proposal/Maintenance Contract a valuable member resource. You can download it by going to the www.ALCA.org website under Resources. Best to you, Judy Gausman, CEO

ater restrictions don’t have to be a Myth #5 - If my grass is green then I’m not saving water. death sentence to turf. Drought conUsing products like humic acids, wetting agents and soil surfactants will help keep your turf green ditions are the time you should be while still reducing water usage by up to 30%! working to keep turf and soil healthy through the Before you remove your turf, know how hot things can get! season! Here are 5 myths about turf maintenance during drought and how to combat them.

Myth #1 – I can’t fertilize because it won’t get watered in and I will burn my turf.

Using high quality organic fertilizer will direct most nutrient activity to the roots and crowns, avoiding the “burn” you get with water soluble nitrogen. Improving your soil will help the turf stay healthy enough to survive these drought conditions. The time you put in today will save you time in repairs and replacement later.

Myth #2 - I should just scalp my turf through summer.

While scalping may seem like an easier solution, it actually puts more stress on the turf. Mowing heights should be RAISED through summer, creating a deeper and more extensive root system, allowing plants to withstand summer stress. Plus, that taller grass will allow soil temperatures to remain cooler at the soil surface.

Myth #4 - Water restrictions will dry up the soil and water will runoff anyways.

• Includes 12 ft. Lead, #8 Mounting Screws, Mounting Template

If you focus on your soil’s health by using organic vs. synthetic products your turf will become more porous, actually retaining water in the subsurface. So rather than just running off, the water is reserved by the soil and released as needed.

Sims Business Systems

S

ims Business Systems has passed the test of time with flying colors. We are the only dealership in Arizona that has survived and thrived for more than 40 years by marketing only the most quality driven products and services. Unlike many of our competitors - who are strictly limited to one manufacturer - Sims offers our clients the best from all manufacturers and combine into simple, affordable packages, including service and supplies. The Sims team has earned us the reputation of fairness, fast service, dependability, and honesty. Everything you experience from Sims is local. There is no 800 number for service or billing questions. The name Sims has been a staple in the business technology space for decades. Today, Sims Business Systems still puts the family name on everything we do. It all starts with our employees. We lead with integrity, loyalty, and a clear understanding of our clients’ needs. The formula continues with a proven track record of open and honest communication. We make a commitment to our clients to always provide the highest quality products and support. Our staff has a real sense of being part of the family business. Sims’ employees are compelled to deliver the best level of service to our clients. Our staff’s extensive tenure and training enables our clients to receive the highest level of professional service. Business processes are a hot topic today and a main focus for our clients. We offer managed print services, VoIP phone solutions, mailing equipment, software solutions, and managed I.T. services to fill in the gaps where needed. We have become experts in streamlining business processes and have helped many clients save thousands of dollars a month on their technology expenses. We help our clients upgrade their technology, increase productivity, and enhance efficiency all while lowering costs. Many of our competitors try to offer these services but have not yet mastered them in the way Sims has over the years. Some of our clients have been with us for over 20 years. At this point, we consider them friends and business partners, and strive to build that relationship with all of our new clients. We want to grow hand-in-hand with our clients, always listening to their wants and needs and always aiming to improve. We’ve seen many of our competitors over the years come and go, while Sims stands strong. With tremendous growth over the past several years, our focus for 2022 will first be to continue strengthening our foundation to maintain our reputation of excellence. People are surprised when they review our customer reference list, because we measure our clients in decades rather than months or years. Sims is a family owned and operated Arizona business that can support clients on a national or even global scale.

ALCA MEMBER PROFILE ARIZONA CLA

How to Save Cost on Labor

E

very employer knows that the actual cost of paying each employee is significantly higher than his or her hourly rate. Even if you don’t offer benefits, there are still some taxes and expenses you will incur due to having employees on your payroll that you can’t avoid. Labor expenses are categorized in two ways: Variable and Fixed. Fixed costs: These are the costs that do not really fluctuate with changes in growth or production. They include such things as social security and Medicare taxes, FUTA, and federal income tax.

GROWING NATIVE DESERT TREES & ORNAMENTAL SHADE TREES Variable costs: These are the costs that are due directly and proportionately to changes. They include such things as employee accidents, light duty, unemployment claims, and additional personal costs due to labor growth. This is where working with an independent contractor like Arizona CLA Landscape is the best solution if you don’t want to pay extra taxes, insurance, and payroll processing costs. For employers, this means that you have fewer obligations. In addition to the previously mentioned cost benefits, employers will not have to send payroll taxes and deductions. Hiring Arizona CLA Landscape as an alternative becomes cost efficient, risk adverse, and provides fewer legal obligations to the company. In this way, employers can remain more focused on continuing to grow their companies. If you would like to find out more don’t hesitate to call or email Alex at (602) 486-7612 / alex@arizonacla.com.
