CEO’S MESSAGE
ALCA Makes the Top 10 Largest Phoenix-Area Trade Associations
C
ongratulations ALCA! In the past 20 years, ALCA has increased its membership by nearly 500% ranking this year for the first time in the top 10 largest trade associations in the Phoenix area. Formed in 1963, ALCA will start the New Year by celebrating its 59th anniversary. Since its inception, ALCA has remained dedicated to its mission of supporting landscape contractors by promoting continued education and effective business practices, providing networking opportunities, and ensuring responsible legislation to continuously enhance the professionalism of members and the public’s perception of landscape contractors and the Green Industry. How did we get here? The association is only as strong as its leaders and the ALCA Board of Directors have always made decisions with the best interest of the members in mind. Volunteering their time and their resources, they consist of a bonded group whose hard work, dedication and vision have been instrumental in ALCA’s success. On October 1, 2009, ALCA held its inaugural meeting of the Board of Trustees. The members consist of past and present Board leaders whose duties are to look beyond the day-to-day operations and focus on reviewing By-Laws, developing financials goals and determining scholarship recipients. They are committed to maintaining the prosperous growth and representation of ALCA members. In 2006, the ALCA Board took a big leap and purchased an office condo on Bell Road where the office and training room still resides. Running a tight ship, the office was paid in full by the end of 2014 so that in good financial times and in bad, ALCA would be there for its members.
ALCA’s educational workshops took a big leap in participation after the Board revamped the AZ Certified Landscape Professional program in 2009. While change is always challenging, ultimately the program increased in attendance by over 300%. Judy Gausman In 2010, ALCA created and trademarked the ALCA CEO Sustainable Landscape Management certification program. Since then, over 2,000 members have participated in the program. This past year alone, there were over 80 volunteers consisting of board members, committee members and education instructors. These volunteers are all about giving, contributing, and helping other individuals and the industry that they love and has served them well. They are imperative not only to the success of ALCA but to enhancing the professionalism of the landscape industry. There are many milestones throughout the history of ALCA’s existence. But the participation and loyalty of the ALCA members is truly the heart of this association. Congratulations again to the 425 ALCA members. Here’s to 59 years and still growing strong. Sincerely, Judy Gausman

ALCA LANDSCAPING AWARDS
Excel Exce llence ALCA’S
45TH ANNUAL
In Landscaping Awards
PROGRAM
Members of the Arizona Landscape Contractors’ Association gathered to celebrate and recognize the fine work and artistry that the landscape industry provides to our beautiful state at the 45th annual Excellence in Landscaping Awards Gala held on November 13, 2021, at the Scottsdale Plaza. The ALCA awards program reflects the association and industry’s commitment to designing and maintaining our Southwest environment as well as applying practices and methods that promote sustainability. There are many people that contribute their time and talents throughout the year to make this program a success. As the Director of the Awards Program, Beth Postma with All Season Wholesale Growers, spearheaded and coordinated ALCA’s largest event of the year. Thank you to the judges who contributed their time and expertise by viewing photos in the ALCA office and onsite visits in the heat of the summer. They were Cindy Odgers, Jackie Lyle, Beth Postma (All Season Wholesale Growers), Kasey Billingsley and Kristen Battafarano (Harmony Horticulture Consulting), Daniel Baiza (Top Quality Lawn and Grounds Service), TJ Winzeler (BrightView) and Kim Kleski (Kleski and Associaties). Much appreciation goes to Joe Carranza with Sunrise Nursery who designed and furnished the colorful and beautiful table centerpieces. Thank you to Roby Everhart with Sunwest Golf & Reclamation for sponsoring the music during the cocktail hour and to Mike Uhrich with Genesis Landscaping for showcasing his talents on the piano. For dessert, everyone enjoyed some delicious dessert sponsored by The Radix Group/Bruce Wilson & Company and Association Outsource Services whose company collects the advertisements for the ALCA Influence magazine and the ALCA directory. Thank you to all of the generous members who donated items for the silent auction that everyone enjoyed during the cocktail reception. Proceeds of $14,000 went to the ALCA Scholarship and Jim Trog Memorial Funds. A special thank you goes to the 2020 Lifetime Achievement recipient, Dave Londen with Back to Nature Landcare, for recognizing and announcing the Special Award winners. As the Master of Ceremonies, Jimmy Fox with Evergreen Turf did a phenomenal job introducing the awards. ALCA is truly fortunate to have members that support the awards program by sponsoring the landscape contracter members. Their generosity is amazing. And of course, there would not be a program without the landscape contractors who submit their beautiful landscape projects. Forty companies took the time and effort to take photos, fill out the application and compete against fellow ALCA members and friends to win an award. By participating in the program, these companies will be able to market to their clients, recognize their employees for their hard work, dedication and outstanding landscape projects and be recognized in the industry by being a leader of the pack and competing with the best! A gallery of the award-winning projects may be viewed at ALCA.org/Gallery and in the upcoming issues of the 2022 ALCA Influence magazine.

2021 Presidential Award
Sponsored by
The Presidential Award is given to a project that demonstrates the highest level of excellence and creativity. This award is the “Best of Show” chosen from over 90 of the most beautiful landscape projects submitted into the competition.
Bill Fleming Landscapes Piestewa Peak Residence
The objective of the Piestewa Peak residence was to create a private garden with a large entertaining area, develop a quiet contemplation garden, unify three separate structures, and increase parking. For privacy, large trees and hedges were planted along the perimeter. A spacious flagstone patio shares the center of the property with the large lap pool. Flower pots and fire bowls add excitement and warmth to the space. Stone steps and pathways lead you through the gardens. 15,000 tons of imported boulders allowed expansion and stabilization of the site. Guest parking was developed along a natural rock ravine. A once forgotten wash was transformed into a vibrant centerpiece to the property. Trees and dramatic boulder outcroppings surround you creating a sense of connection to the mountains. Native plants, cactus and desert adapted plants provide color, texture, and fragrance. The gourmet outdoor kitchen creates a perfect gathering place. As darkness falls, hundreds of color adjustable lights beautifully illuminate the property.

BrightView Landscape Services Province Community Association
BrightView Landscape Services has been maintaining Province for eight years and during this time, they have worked hard to get the community closer to sustainable. Aside from implementing SLM and ALCA approved practices, they have recently removed 5% of their maintainable turf, skipped seeding various areas in favor of painting turf, removed non-desert plants and replaced with desert adapted plants, and installed 54 weather based smart controllers across the property. They are committed to using the best cultural practices to combat the variety of challenges they face.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD David Morris and Dawn Fried – Horticulture Unlimited
Judy Gausman (R) presented the award to David Morris and Dawn Fried
Sponsored by Civano Growers From its humble beginnings in 1979 as four college friends & two pickup trucks, the company first known as Friends of the Earth quickly evolved into Horticulture Unlimited. With just two of those friends taking the reins and later becoming husband and wife, David Morris and Dawn Fried have together grown their business into one of the most successful landscaping companies in Southern Arizona. Originally from New Jersey, the couple relocated to Tucson, Arizona to attend the University of Arizona. They each received Bachelor Degrees in Plant Sciences, and then turned their focus to their developing business. Dave and Dawn have always been hands-on in their endeavors, including being in the field on the very first work crew together performing landscape maintenance. Operating from their home in the company’s infancy, they did so while also raising all three of their sons. Growth of the company has remained steady since its inception. Accounts have ranged from small residential to large commercial and everything in between. When the economy took a downturn as the housing market fell, workloads reduced for a period of time, but the solid foundation created by Dave and Dawn kept crews employed and working until the economy recovered. Even when the recent pandemic hit many businesses hard, Horticulture Unlimited instead has been thriving! There has been extremely high demand, with packed schedules and eager customers willing to wait for their highly sought-after services. For most of her career, Dawn consistently encountered clients having No Worries Mate! similar questions and seeking her extensive knowledge and experience. She applied her expertise to written word and labored for several years to create a set of reference books for sale to customers and the general public. Design, Build & Bloom and The Art of Southwest Landscaping have been very successful, gaining Dawn much acclaim and notoriety. The books have been featured in numerous newspaper and magazine publications. There Paul D. Chambers, C.H. have also been a series of events and appearances promoting these works. How to Control Increased Insurance Rates
Inflation is well in our midst. Our goal is to beat inflationary impulses for our customers who strongly control losses, while mitigating premium increases for valued customers who aren’t able to reduce losses. As Steve Shields notes, “our landscaper clients can go two directions, and we try to have them prepared as well as possible. One direction is to shop hard with insurance, which we always do. We have a strong team and solid insurance carriers who put your account to market. The better, more sustainable long term strategy is to promote safety within the organization, often and regularly. Many of our clients abided by social distancing measures and in so doing, put a pause in in person safety meetings. We were surprised to see what kind of a difference and the toll taken by a lack of tool box talks had on experience with both Workers Compensation and Automobile claims wrought from a change in routine safety conversations.”

These major risks go hand in hand. We preach an environment of awareness of these big known risks and emerging risks. Its easy for your accountant to pay the wrong person, at your cost through a cyber / social engineering loss. Often its uninsured because its either a neglected risk or an unwanted expense of insurance.
Hard Markets
Auto insurance is a problem with expensive auto repairs and increases in tort activity for bodily injury and uninsured / underinsured motorist claims. The best managed fleets should expect an 8% increase in Business Auto insurance premiums.

ur family owned team at Sunrise Nursery has been a longstanding member of the ALCA community. In 1984 our family began our trade as a small residential landscaping firm. Over time, we started to grow our own plants for our landscaping projects. The success of our small endeavors provided us the means and opportunities to expand our operations to serve Arizona’s wholesale nursery market. Sunrise Nursery, LLC specializes in growing drought tolerant trees, shrubs, cacti and other plants that thrive in arid climates. Our nursery is located west of Phoenix, near US 60 (Grand Avenue) and Loop 303, with over 200 acres of plants. Our Haraquahala farm, serves the entire Southwest including Southern California, Southern Nevada and Texas; it is located about 60 miles west of Phoenix. We are proud of providing sustainable landscaping plant material for small, large residential, commercial and municipal projects. We take the time to know the unique needs of every customer to ensure that the highest quality of plant material is provided for all our customers’ projects. We are committed to providing expert advice, affordable prices and building relationships with everyone we serve. As members of ALCA, Sunrise Nursery has benefited from the advocacy ALCA provides in legislative matters. Our membership with ALCA has kept us informed on the rules and regulations that impact our business which have allowed us to make more sound decisions on business practices. Additionally, the hands-on, professional training provided for all members of our team have helped us run our business more effectively, and stay abreast of the latest techniques, trends and designs. WEST COAST TURF/WESTERN SOD
West Coast Turf/Western Sod Quality, Service, and the Newest State-of-the-Art Eco-Friendly Turfgrasses/Groundcover
West Coast Turf/Western Sod (WCT/WS) is undoubtedly the most famous face in Arizona’s turfgrass industry. We offer top professional quality natural turfgrass and installation services to all of our customers, whether they are an ultra-particular golf course superintendent wanting perfection for members or a PGA Tour tournament, a landscape contractor wanting the best product at the best price, an MLB spring training facility needing top quality product, or a homeowner looking for the newest environmentally friendly lawn. We also offer same day pick-ups at our Scottsdale farm.
The Latest State-of-the-Art Grasses, NEW super drought tolerant groundcover, and the “Good Ol’ Standby’s”
Environmentally friendly turfgrasses are vital to the future of the industry, and one of our answers is the Platinum TE Paspalum. “I’ve been in the and I love helping people get industry for a long time, and I haven’t seen a grass out there better for our their lawns in top condition,” desert,” Danek explained Danek said. WCT/WS offers virtual “Lunch and Learn” presentations for those wanting in on the latest detailed industry product information—just ask! Contact West Coast Turf/ Western Sod at 800/832-8873, online at www.westcoastturf.com, or find us on Facebook www.facebook.com/westcoastturf. Life is short. Sod it! WCT/WS has recently introduced Kurapia sod—a drought tolerant natural groundcover. It creates highly unique and versatile landscape design. It requires less water, and maintenance than traditional turfgrasses. It has the look of a lawn—it grows close to the ground and rarely exceeds 1” high. If left un-mowed, it produces small white sterile flowers, or they can be mowed off for a textured simple green look. It is found to be tolerant of saline, acidic, and basic soils, and grows best in full sun or partial shade. “The market is certainly buzzing over Kurapia sod. It wasn’t available in sod form before but we’ve got it now. It is more costly than traditional turfgrass, but those who have tried it are loving it and using it on more projects after their first time. It is a pretty cool plant, and we’re excited to sell it, “said Danek. Tahoma 31 bermuda is our newest addition and is quickly becoming an industry favorite. “Tahoma is by far the most drought tolerant bermuda we have ever seen. It also has incredible wear tolerance in addition to the drought tolerance. It is the best grass in the NTEP study under deficit irrigation, fine texture, early spring green up, and ability to thrive from sports fields to home lawns. Keep your eye on this grass—its exceeding all expectations,” Danek explained. “We’ve also expanded our inventory of St. Augustine, the new TifTuf, and our popular EZ-Turf,” Danek said. “And--BOBSod is still the homeowner ‘go to” grass. But the Tahoma 31, Platinum TE and Kurapia are the ones that everyone wants to know more about.”
And Mr. Wise Grass—Our Sod Blog
Danek has been roped into his role as our resident “Mr. Wise Grass.” His blog “Ask Mr. Wise Grass” (found at http://mrwisegrass.com ) offers turf advice, tips, insights, and answers. “I am passionate about grass,

As a business owner, you have invested me and effort into building a business that supports not only you and your family, but many others including employees, vendors, customers, and your community. Whether it’s a few years from now or decades away, there will come a me when you leave your business. To ensure a successful passing to the next owner, it is important to start planning now. In addion, customers and vendors prefer working with businesses that have a strong succession plan in place. Planning now gives those you work with condence in the stability of your business. As you build your succession plan, take control of the process and leave on your terms by following these six crical steps:
Tax Cuts & Jobs Act Seminar
ONE: Start now. Only 30% of businesses make a successful transion. TWO: Clarify your goals. Think through quesons such as ‘When will I sell my business and to whom? How much income do I need? What will I do next?’. The answers will help determine the strategies you use. THREE: Build your plan. Decide whom will be the next owner though evaluaon of pros and cons; then strategize with your business succession team. FOUR: Manage your risk. A strong succession plan accounts for risks that could derail planning. For example, what if something happens to a key employee? FIVE: Value your business. Find out what your business is worth.

SIX: Review your plan. The only constant is change so review your plan annually with your team.

ALCA WORKSHOPS
ALCA Certified Irrigation Tech (ACIT) The ALCA Certified Irrigation Technician (ACIT) training program was presented this fall to a full group of students. The third and final day of the 3-part training series was held outside in the ALCA landscape and parking lot where students actively participated in live demos and hands-on activities:
• Students performed a site assessment of the existing irrigation system including reviewing irrigation plans, checking pressure at the backflow, locating valves, and discussing the plant health and irrigation interface. • Students participated in two irrigation audits comparing different spray heads to calculate Distribution Uniformity (DU) and discuss efficiency upgrades. • Participants performed troubleshooting tactics on an irrigation controller & valves using multi-meters and learned how to use a wire locator and a toner. • Instructors demonstrated the advantages and disadvantages of various spray and drip emission devices during live water demos, while students took measurements of drip rates and took pressure readings at the rotors using a pitot tube. Students are declared an ACIT once they have attended all 3 days of training and pass an exam with 80% or higher, making the ACIT program one of the highest bars for a Certified Irrigation Technician. A big shout-out to the dedicated volunteers who devoted time out of their busy schedules to contribute to the education and professional development of our industry: Doug Donahue of Ewing Irrigation and Landscape Supply, James Carr of BrightView Landscape Services, Jim Carefoot of Armada Technologies, Josh Dupper of R.H. Dupper Landscaping, Inc., Margaret Saulsby of Rain Bird, Rick Robinson of Stillwater Landscape Management, Scott Cosgrove with ELS Maintenance, Inc., and Tony Acosta of Genesis Landscape Solutions. The ACIT training program was developed and is sustained with funds from the Jim Trog Water Management Memorial Fund. Jim Trog was a Board member who focused on water management as the water conservation manager with Four Peaks Landscape Management. Jim spent time within the communities he served educating the use of technologies in the landscape to improve water management both at the commercial and residential level. Jim’s legacy lives on through the ACIT program. The next ACIT program will be held in Spring 2022 and you may reach out to Heather@alca.org for details.
