STUDENT ENGAGEMENT & COMMUNITY STRENGTHENING—
these two priorities encapsulated our approach to the 2019-2020 school year. Charged by these new initiatives, our faculty sought new ways to inspire our students in their learning, and, as a community, we explored new ways to strengthen and grow our bonds with one another. We engaged in many new styles of instruction and held some fantastic events during the first eighth months of the year. As we ended spring break, however, we entered an unfamiliar world and saw the addition of two new phrases that would mark the 2019-2020 school year—COVID-19 and distance learning. With the closing of campus, we cancelled many end-ofyear events, including our beloved Olympics and Dads Club BBQ Cook-Off. We also saw the cancelling of many revenue-generating programs such as our Extended Day and Camp AOS programs. Fortunately, due to the generous support of our community through the Annual Fund, Book Fair and Spaghetti Dinner, and the Dads Club Golf Tournament and Sporting Clays, AOS weathered a difficult end to our year. I cannot adequately express how grateful I am that we were not only able to avoid any layoffs or furloughs, but we also continued with campus and curriculum improvements laid forth by our current strategic plan. These improvements include the installation of livestream capabilities, the purchase of new tables for the 6th-grade science room, and the buildout of a brand new middle school maker space and technology room due in large part to the incredible support of this year’s Annual Fund. Our families are our lifeline, and the best way I know how to demonstrate my gratitude for the incredible support we receive from them is to ensure that we educate the hearts and minds of our students. It is my honor and privilege to continue that work. Thank you, again, for sharing your gifts and for being a donor.

A WORD FROM
THE BOARD CHAIR
Dear AOS family, Sometimes it’s hard to remember that most of the 2019-2020 school year was a typical year at AOS. The rhythm of life at our school pulsed with busy hallways, vibrant classrooms, and familiar traditions. Families enjoyed the Back to School Breakfast and Book Fair and Spaghetti Dinner, and alumni gathered to celebrate the Greek Festival. As always, the AOS community marked the beginning of 2020 with the distribution of vasilopita, the traditional Greek New Year’s bread, thinking the year would be much like every other. Despite the unexpected circumstances created by the global pandemic, there were several achievements that will put AOS in a strong position for the future. Thanks to our parents, grandparents, alumni and friends, the AOS Annual Fund had another successful year. We reduced the outstanding debt on the Carry the Torch Phase 1 construction by approximately 40%, to just under $2 million. We truly appreciate the generous donors who have made this possible. In furtherance of the strategic plan, the AOS Board of Trustees was looking forward to rolling out Phase 2 of the campus master plan and a strategy for increasing AOS’ endowment. While the pandemic might have changed the timing and priorities of our work, we will continue planning for a bright future for AOS.
For the time being, the Board is focused on supporting the AOS administration as it navigates the many challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic presents. Various committees of Trustees, and the Board as a whole, have spent a lot of additional time focused on issues created by the crisis. I am very grateful for the talent that this group so freely shares to benefit our school. I especially want to thank Alan Christensen, the Treasurer of the Board, and his Finance Committee for their excellent work this year. I want to recognize our outstanding administration, faculty, and staff for their extraordinary efforts throughout the year, but especially during the crisis. They have devoted countless hours of research and preparation, infused with lots of creativity and love, to do everything possible so that we will be able to return to school safely in the fall. I also want to thank three outgoing Board members whose terms are ending this year: Jen Arntzen, Adrian Patterson, and Will Randall. All of these individuals have been incredibly dedicated and valuable AOS volunteers for many years, and we are grateful for their service and contributions. As we look forward to the 50th anniversary celebration of AOS, we are reminded of the humility, hard work, and faith of the Cathedral members who had the vision to start AOS. We can look to their example and to the AOS mission to fortify and inspire us to face whatever challenges may be ahead, knowing that the lessons learned during difficult times may be the most valuable ones.

When I found out that we are adding science stations to my classroom, I actually teared up with happy tears. Our school has always had pride in our science program and how we teach by inquiry and labs and not just through demonstration. Having

A WORD FROM
THE PARENT TEACHER CLUB PRESIDENT
Eight years ago we chose AOS for our son to start Kindergarten for many reasons - reputation, academics, nurturing faculty, and the school’s philosophy on educating the whole child. While all of those reasons continue to hold true for why we appreciate AOS, after all of these years, I would also add the AOS community to the list. Our AOS community is truly special and unique. We are a group of more than 500 families that is fun, welcoming, and caring. Ours is a community that is vibrant, supportive, and strong. The PTC exists to support and encourage our community through events and fundraising each year, and this year was no different. In August, we kicked off the school year with record attendance at the annual Back to School Breakfast. Then, in October, we transformed the gym into an enchanted forest for the “Discover Your Story” Book Fair and Spaghetti Dinner. What a treat it was to raise money for the school, promote reading, and have Mrs. Nikkie’s fabulous spaghetti! We capped off 2019 in December by co-hosting a showing of the latest Star Wars movie with the Dads Club. The Force was strong with AOS that day!
Throughout the year, PTC volunteers also were hard at work behind the scenes. We had volunteers assisting our faculty with numerous projects and activities such as Helping Hands, Room/Team Parents, Classical & Musical Countdown, Christmas Program & Robes, and Art Angels. With the Visual Arts Exhibition, we added to the beauty of our campus by displaying student artwork, and we continued our tradition of caring by looking out for those in our AOS family during good times and bad (Care Team) and by teaching our children to look out for others (Service Learning). We also supported the school by fostering school spirit (Spirit Sales, Team Sports) and recognizing our outstanding faculty and staff (Faculty & Staff Appreciation). Finally, the PTC was there to assist our families with some basic but very essential needs (Used Uniforms, Lost & Found). As 2020 began, plans were underway for Faculty & Staff Appreciation Week, EIKON Art Show, and Olympics. Unfortunately, COVID-19 had other ideas. Although we were unable to have these events in person, that didn’t stop us from celebratingour faculty and staff virtually with gift cards and personalized word art. And, thanks to our fabulous art teachers, we were able to have a virtual showcase of our students’ art. While we were unable to gather in person after spring break, members of the PTC Board stayed connected with our community by calling to say hello and to check in on our families during the quarantine. Even during a pandemic, the AOS community remained strong. Thank you for your help, encouragement, and participation this year. The PTC would not be successful without the steadfast support of parents, faculty, and administration. It has been such an honor to serve as your PTC President. AOS means so much to my family, and it has been a great pleasure to play a small part in seeing that it continues to thrive for years to come. Thank you! Here’s the rundown of each event: The Golf Tournament was led by Robert Charles. The tournament was renamed this year to the Panos Georgiou Memorial Golf Tournament. The Utterson family helped commemorate the moment with hats for all participants. The weather this year was great and many of Panos’ friends and family were able to join us. We had 84 players and 16 sponsors. The moms and dads had a great time, and we look forward to another great event next year.
A WORD FROM
THE DADS CLUB PRESIDENT We had another fantastic year for the AOS Dads Club! I am happy to report that for the sixteenth year in a row we have continued to provide additional funding and support to the school’s programs, ending the year with a Dads Club account balance of over $90,000. This year we helped fund the turf on the Nine Square field. In addition, we also provided our annual contributions to the General Fund and the Jimmy Pappas Fund, with the remaining funds being saved for future school requests. We changed some things up this year and changed a few events. We were only able to host two of our three big fundraisers this year. All events were very successful and not only generated revenue, but also strengthened the AOS community.
The sixth annual Sporting Clays had strong participation and support behind Chair Bill Prout. The field was strong. We had 18 teams filling the course with AOS parents, friends, and supporters. The raffle was hugely successful with some amazing prizes. Our eleventh annual BBQ Cook-Off was unfortunately cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Dan Rieber did a ton of hard work behind the scenes. We had celebrity judges lined up and were looking forward to another great year. We look forward to being back next spring bigger and better than ever! The Dads Club looked to change things up a bit this year, andwe challenged ourselves to find ways to advance the AOS goal of community building. The first step was the elimination of dues, making all AOS dads members! Additionally, we joined the PTC in sponsoring the Star Wars Movie Night Out. Kris McGinty was instrumental in a major change this year. As always, the Dads Club hosted several well attended happy hours throughout the year. We changed it up by hosting a father-son event and a father-daughter event. Both events were extremely successful and well attended with more than 100 participants at each event! We started with the father-son event in the fall at Speedy’s Fast Track. The dads and kids had a full run of the facility. The competition was heavy on the go kart track, laser tag arena,and the miniature golf course! Smiles, laughs, and pizza were shared by all throughout the night. In the winter, we went to Sam Sann Warriors All Star Ninja Gym for the father-daughter night out. From the floating steps to the cargo net to, of course, the warped wall, dads and girls alike showed off their ninja skills.

I would like to thank the Advancement Office for their guidance and support. I would also like to take a second to recognize the 2019-2020 AOS Dads Club Board for their help. It was a challenging year full of changes. It would not have been successful without all of their hard work. We look forward to welcoming in a new crop of students and dads in the fall. We also say goodbye to good friends and supporters as these families move onto high school. A past president, Jason Ahlgren, wrote a few years ago that, “over the years it is the community and the involvement of the parents that makes AOS such a great school. While the Dads Club continues to provide strong financial support to our children and the school, it is important to highlight that we foster the relationships that bond us together as brothers in arms at AOS. The Dads Club provides the opportunities for us to get together, make new friends, share some stories and help each other get through another school year.”
