The

Stars of the big screens

Buying a new TV can often feel as big as your first trip to an IMAX. Here we’ll help set expectations and budgets by telling you all you need to know.

Size matters

Remember when your Mum used to tell you off for sitting too close to the screen in case you got square eyes? Well, neither you nor Mum need to worry these days. As a general rule, your perfect viewing distance for 4K TVs is 1.5

times the height so you get the most out of the tech, and for HD, it’s 3 times the height.

OLED vs QLED

What’s the difference? Put very simply, and without too much techy bits (but it’s on our website if you want to know more), OLED TVs (Organic LED) boast great viewing angles from any direction, brilliant contrast and don’t use too much power. QLED TVs (Quantum-Dot LED) on the other hand work very similarly but can jack up their brightness levels meaning they work brilliantly in rooms where you like to keep the big light on.

The best view out there from your favourite chair.

This is the big one, folks. Grab the popcorn, sit back, and prepare to be part of your TV Narnia -style. This 65" smart TV from Samsung boasts an 8K Ultra HD MiniLED display which gives amazing detail and colours. An AI Gen2 processor gives your favourite classics a boost – as though Captain Von Trapp or Calamity Jane are right there in your living room. Perched on the rubbish end of the sofa? Don’t worry. You’ll still see everything in all its glory thanks to the Ultra Viewing Angle which means nothing looks washed out no matter where you’re sitting. If that wasn’t enough, Dolby Atmos® tech makes sure you won’t just hear the sound, you’ll be surrounded by it – a bit like being inside Jurassic Park, but safer.

MiniLED

MiniLEDs are what they say on the tin. They’re smaller-sized LEDs than those found in OLED and QLED TVs which means more of them can be packed together which gives them more control over the lighting of the screen, as well as turning off areas of an image in order to create deeper blacks.

Safety made SIM-ple

Keeping your nearest and dearest safe is a full-time job. But the digital world has some suggestions...

Lots of children under the age of 16 now have mobile phones. But, although smartphone tech can be a force for good, it should also be carefully monitored so that access is kept strictly to the right things and that screen time is kept in check. Thankfully, mobile phone manufacturers have kids too, so there are features out there that can give parents an extra hand.

Google for example, can help you set digital ground rules using the Family Link feature while helping to nurture healthy digital habits. Apps and screen time can be managed and monitored by you as they explore, so that you can understand how they’re spending time on their device. Meanwhile, they can share their location with you when

they’re out the house, so you’ll have peace of mind that they got to where they’re going safely.

Similarly, Samsung’s Galaxy For Families feature allows the control of website access, age restrictions on apps and game age ratings in the Galaxy Store, purchase restrictions to avoid unexpected bills, location sharing, and family album sharing. In addition, Samsung Kids comes pre-installed on Samsung smartphones which works much in the same way with a helping hand from 5 different characters that help make their fi rst steps into this digital world a place of learning, exploration and encouragement. And you? Well, you can rest a little easier.

AI: What's all the to-do?

Artificial intelligence (AI) can alter images, make music and recognise a face at 20 paces, but will it actually take over the world…?

AIis powerful in tasks like image recognition or language processing but lacks general intelligence or consciousness. It can’t think or act independently beyond its programmed tasks – which is done by humans.

That answer came from ChatGPT, so if AI doesn’t believe that AI can dominate the world, I think we’re probably safe. That said, you should ask what AI can take over in your world to make your to-do list a little lighter –there will be something. Let’s say you spend 2 hours a week scouring the internet for the best recipes. Asking an AI assistant can probably save you about an hour and 59 minutes – think of what you could do with that spare time! You could, for example, help your kids with their maths homework and confi dently work out

the value of x… with the help of an AI assistant of course (we won’t tell).

The reason we bring this up, is that more and more laptops now come with free AI trials or AI-enhanced features. So instead of seeing these as a reason to be afraid of certain models, instead consider the tangible benefi ts that AI could bring to your kitchen table, desk, or wherever you do your surfi ng.

HP’s new OmniBook boasts its CoPilot AI assistant that lets you ask where you last had a document or can help translate any of 44 languages in seconds. Similarly, Chromebook’s Gemini AI can help you tailor emails depending on recipient – whether it’s Mum, boss or your estate agent. It can also help restore your most treasured photos with one click of a mouse.

SMART HOME

I spy better home security

The more you see the more you know. But you don’t need to be 007 to get top-notch surveillance to protect everything you hold dear.

It’s really easy to see why smart doorbells are up there on the list of devices making a difference to our lives. They’re a fantastic way to keep an eye on things at home without you needing to be there, and some even have two-way audio so you can chat to the dog walker, or let the postie know where to leave a package. More than that though, smart doorbells are your fi rst line of defence for anything untoward.

Take the Ring Video Doorbell Plus (1), for example. It captures footage in Full HD – even

at nighttime – detects motion and sends alerts straight to your smartphone. It’s a nifty little energy saver too. Models like this can just be run off a battery pack meaning you’re kept safe for 6 to 12 months at a time for the cost of a charge.

And, if you want an even more detailed picture, models like the SwannBuddy™ (5) can record in 4K, which can come in handy should you ever need it. It also senses heat and movement for reliable alerts.

A load o your mind

Autumn marks the beginning of what can be a costly time of year. Heating, Christmas, the energy price cap…

Luckily, just as your big coat and winter duvet are getting a freshen up for the colder months, we’re here with some very practical laundry tips that could help you save a few pennies before you get cracking.

Wash clothes at lower temperatures

No, really. Switching from 40°C to 30°C uses less water and less heat

and that makes it more energy effi cient. Your clothes will also feel the benefi t of colder water as it keeps fabric in tip-top condition.

Avoid pre-wash functions

You can afford to skip this step; it just uses more water and more energy. Really stubborn stains can be sorted using a stain remover or even eco-friendly detergent before a normal wash.

Turn it off -off

The Energy Saving Trust calculates that the average UK household spends £65 a year on appliances left on standby. Many washing machines now announce the end of a cycle by playing a tune, so use this as your reminder to check it’s actually off-off.

Lighten your load

Nothing beats conquering Mount Laundry with a “Big Wash”. But there’s a limit on how much you should stuff into your machine if you want to save energy.

A general rule of thumb (or hand) is that your hand should fi t comfortably on top of your washing. If it doesn’t, pull a few things out.

Energy ratings

If you’re on the hunt for a new washing machine, ao.com displays all energy ratings on its product pages. Washing machines are measured on a scale of A to G. The higher the rating (A being highest), the less energy is used.

Kitchen must-haves

Getting creative in the kitchen all starts with what appliances you put in it. From ice-cold freezers and piping hot ovens, to coffee machines, washing machines and everything in between, you'll find it at AO.

1

Find your fit

Nothing gives you more confidence than when something fits perfectly, and it’s no different when it comes to a shiny, new built-in kitchen.

However, there is a little bit of prep to do beforehand to make sure what you’ve got planned fits into your day-to-day. Here’s our best advice:

Oven sizes

While some models can vary ever so slightly, ovens pretty much come in standard sizes. Most single ovens will fit in a 60cm tall housing unit, for example.

Compact ovens, built-in microwaves and coffee machines are the same size

They usually fit in the same 45cm tall cabinet space, but always measure up to be doubly sure.

Island hobs need a power supply

If you're thinking of fitting a hob on your kitchen island, you'll need a power supply nearby. Induction hobs make that easier because you won’t need to install a gas supply too.

Mind the gap

The gap between your hob and your cooker hood is known as “The Hot Zone”. We recommend leaving a gap of at least 75cm, and above 65cm if it's an electric hob. A 9cm gap on either side of “The Hot Zone” is also ideal for added ventilation.

Check when you need a professional

Most hobs need hardwiring in, but some models do come with plugs. Check your connection before you buy as a lot of homes don’t have a socket beneath the cabinet, so they’ll need to be installed by an electrician anyway.

Must-fry recipe

Cheesy chilli chicken bites

These bite-sized chicken pieces are easy to make and even easier to eat.

Serves 4 generously

600g chicken breast cut into bite-sized pieces

100g Greek yoghurt

75g mature cheddar cheese, grated

2 tbsp double cream

1 tsp grated garlic

1 tsp grated ginger

1 tsp cumin seeds

1 tsp red chilli flakes

Half a tsp fenugreek powder

Salt to taste

Vegetable oil to brush

To garnish

Rocket leaves and pomegranate seeds (optional)

1 Combine the yoghurt, cheese and cream with the garlic, ginger, cumin seeds, red chilli flakes and fenugreek powder. Season with salt to taste. This forms the marinade for the chicken.

2 Mix the pieces of chicken into the marinade. These shouldn’t be too large as this will risk them not cooking through fully. Allow to marinate for a few hours or overnight if possible.

3 Line the air fryer with a piece of greaseproof paper. Place the chicken pieces on top and brush with the oil.

4 Air fry the chicken bites at 200°C for 10-12 minutes depending on the size of your chicken pieces.

5 Serve on a platter strewn with rocket leaves and scatter over pomegranate seeds if you wish.

Top tip

Remember, it’s easier to add heat than it is to take it away. When it comes to chilli flakes, a little goes a long way to get that kick, so start off small and work your way up to your desired heat.

Life’s little legends

Where would any of us be without our cups of tea? Our second rounds of toast? Our quick and easy ready meals? We don’t even want to know. But what we do know is that none of those things would be possible without small but mighty electricals. Take a look.

Baking? Piece of cake

Retro styling, a vast colour palette, and more screentime

on The Great British Bake Off than even Mary Berry, makes the KitchenAid stand mixer a favourite choice for budding bakers and professional pastry chefs alike.

But while they look great on screen, do they work well enough to earn a place in your kitchen too? We think so. This icon can tackle anything from light frosting to heavy dough thanks to a 300-Watt power output and 7 different attachments – lovely stuff. The icing on the cake though? It’s dishwasher friendly, so once you’ve fi nished licking the bowl, cleanup is done in a jiffy.

Whip this up

Eton mess cheesecake

This berry tasty recipe is a true crowd-pleaser.

For the base

300g digestive biscuits

150g butter, melted

For the fi lling

115g icing sugar, sieved

300g full fat cream cheese

180g mascarpone

300ml double cream

1tbsp vanilla extract

100g white chocolate, melted

100g fresh strawberries, chopped

For the topping

2 meringue nests, crushed

50g fresh strawberries, chopped

1 Crush the biscuits into a fi ne crumb. Melt the butter and combine with the crumbed biscuits.

2 Using a 20cm, loose bottomed cake tin, press the butter and biscuit mix into the base of the tin to form the bottom of the cheesecake. Pop into the fridge while you make the fi lling.

3 Add the icing sugar, cream cheese and mascarpone to the mixer. Using the KitchenAid whisk attachment, whip everything together on a low speed. Once combined, slowly pour in the cream, vanilla and melted white chocolate. Continue to whip on slow until everything comes together – avoid over mixing.

4 Gently fold in the chopped strawberries then add the fi lling mix to the chilled cheesecake base.

5 Smooth over the cheesecake mix to create a flat top to the cheesecake. Chill in the fridge for 5 hours, or ideally overnight.

6 Once the cheesecake has set, decorate the top with the meringue and fresh strawberries. Slice and enjoy.
