What Drives You? The Techniques for Motivating Yourself
Inspiration "Your own resolution to success is more important than some other one thing." - Abraham Lincoln
Self Made Millionaire Bianca rose towards the sound of pigeons cooing and traffic grumbling on the street below. As she yawned and stretched, she contemplated what was waiting for her that particular day.
She felt her motivation slowly drain away each and every deadline and commitment that zipped through her thoughts. As Bianca started to wither and wilt internally, she remembered the motivation pills she'd purchased last week from the Good Value Pharmacy.
There are yellow pills labeled 'Money', pink pills labeled 'Pride', green pills labeled 'Family', purple pills labeled 'Respect' and a few ugly grey pills labeled 'Nagging Advice'. The chemist had said as he dispensed the pills that some is acceptable for her and some may not... he could never tell upfront which pills is correct for which customers. Achievable advice in mind plus a smile on her lips, Bianca reached for that one she knew could be just right for her...
Among the best things you can do for yourself in your journey of self discovery is usually to work out what drives you. The first step is to identify your values while they provide the fuel for your motivation and the drive behind whatever you do in life. If you want something you will always obtain the motivation and energy to get it done. If you don't value something, you'll always struggle to obtain the motivation and energy to acheive it.
Your values are precisely what are important to you. Those are the broad concepts that guide your decisions in your life and form the first step toward your character. Your values also figure out how you spend your time. By way of example, if your most important value is health, you will spend your time quite differently from someone whose most important value is career or family.
Values also drive all your motivation. You won't pursue a course of action unless it relates to something value at some level. Identifying your values allows you to kick-start your own motivation, set goals which might be appropriate and invest some time on things that are important to you.
How Your Values Are Formed
Your values are derived from a number of sources in addition to your family, friends, religion, school, teachers, country and also the media. They are also shaped anytime in your life by significant emotional events for example natural disasters, emotional abuse, global depression or war.
Your values change when you grow and evolve. Once you change your values, additionally, you will change some of your beliefs and how you live life.
How To Identify Your Personal Values
Identifying your own values helps you to:
- Understand why some issues certainly are a problem for you; - See why several things motivate you and others don't; and - Identify and overcome troublesome areas of your life.
For example, assume you've got weight issues. You determine your own personal values and find that conditioning doesn't even rate a mention inside your values. You may have found the reason why you are having weight issues, i.e. physical fitness and health is not something you value. Although this remains the case it will be very difficult for you to lose weight and gain a greater degree of health and fitness in your life since you will not have any motivation to do so.
You can identify your values by wondering:
- What is important to me in relation to my life, career, relationships etc? - What would cause me to leave my life, career, relationships, etc?
When you have an understanding of your values, it is useful to see how they affect your motivation.
Your values drive your motivation. If you set goals which are aligned with your values, you will have the motivation to help you achieve them. In case you set goals that are not in line with your values, it will be an uphill struggle to achieve them.
When you understand your values as well as their impact on how you are presently motivating yourself you will have a wonderful insight into why you achieve the results that you do in life. You will also learn how to motivate yourself more effectively down the road.
Motivation comes either from inside you (intrinsic motivation) or from a source (extrinsic motivation).
Extrinsic motivationis supplied by some factor external to you personally. It can take the form of inducements (rewards) or punishments. The rewards could be tangible or intangible (such as praise).
Intrinsic motivationis evident once you engage in an activity due to the own sake without external incentive. It seems like from research created by Albert Bandura that if you've got more self efficacy (belief absolutely need abilities to control your environment) you happen to be more highly intrinsically motivated than other people.
As intrinsic motivation is the only one you can wear and call upon at any time, it is the most important when it comes to self motivation.
Intrinsic motivation can be broken down further into 'towards' motivation and 'away from' motivation. 'Towards' motivation is motivation towards something want and 'away from' motivation is motivation away from something you don't want.
'Away From' Motivation
'Away from' motivation is driven by pain. Pain motivated performance is just not pleasant, produces inconsistent results and disappears in the event the pain is no longer present.
'Away from motivation' does, however, provide you with a strong initial motivation to go away from the thing you don't want in your own life. A problem with using this type of motivation is that you wait until things are bad prior to taking action to change them. Additional problems is that you don't have a target or goal that you're aiming for (just something you are running from) which means you don't tend to achieve results.
Sophia uses 'away from' motivation regarding her weight. Consequently she is the classic yo yo dieter. Her process goes such as this. Sophia looks in the mirror and is aware that she is overweight. She says to herself, 'I wouldn't like to be fat anymore'. She then proceeds a diet to
ensure she is no longer fat. (She's moving away from being fat). Sooner or later she looks within the mirror and understands that she looks fantastic and is no longer fat. As she's no longer fat, she has just lost the source of her motivation (to not be fat). As there is no longer any motivation, she will no longer stays on the diet and discards her exercise regime. She will not be motivated to accomplish whatever she has to stay fit and healthy. During the future she will look in the mirror and again constitute the judgment that she is fat and also the process will start all over again.
When you are motivated faraway from something that you don't want in your life, you tend to focus upon ab muscles thing you don't want and that is what you attract into your life. As examples:
- If you constantly say to yourself, 'I don't want to be broke', your focus is upon being broke which is where your unconscious mind will aim. - If you constantly tell yourself, "I don't want to be single", your focus is upon being single and that is where your unconscious mind will aim.
Motivation away from what you don't want can inspire you, but it doesn't do this for long and you can not be sure what results you will achieve. It can provide you with a fantastic initial boost of one's, but you can never guarantee what your location is going to end up as you do not have a firm direction at heart, just a place you would like to get away from. If you use far from motivation in your life, you are going to tend to create a group of crises to keep yourself motivated.
If you are using 'towards motivation' you will take action to go towards your goal and you'll achieve them more often than not.
'Towards' motivation is the best method to motivate yourself. When you are motivated towards what you need, you tend to stay consistently motivated and soon you achieve your goal (provided you want it enough).
When you are motivated towards what you need, you constantly set and have goals each time stretching yourself further. By utilizing motivation towards what you look for you give yourself a much larger chance of achieving what you look for out of life.
