The Department of Communication advances the study and practice of communication across a range of contexts, including face-to-face interactions, public discourse, mass media, and digital media. Our research and teaching enhance critical awareness of communication’s role in an increasingly global society.
The Department integrates alumni into its educational and outreach activities through an Alumni Board, e-newsletters, classroom visits, an annual fundraiser, and a mentoring program. A small number of alumni are honored annually through the department’s Hall of Fame. We also maintain close partnerships with The Seattle Times, Pioneer newspapers, and Next Door Media blogs.
Professional Development Month
Each year, Communication students and alumni come together in the spirit of professional development. The month-long programming includes networking, panels and workshops on improving your skills, and much more. This is an opportunity for students and recent grads to learn from alumni, top company representatives and other communication professionals about what to expect when they graduate and start a first job.
Master of Communication in Digital Media
The MCDM is making its mark on the merging of technology, entertainment and design as students, faculty and partners collaborate on solutions for today’s highly digital world. Through its “community laboratory, students learn to incubate new digital media communication strategies and platforms with local organizations.
With the generous support of our alumni and friends, our annual spring fundraiser upholds our mission to provide transformative educational experiences for our students. Private donations give students opportunities to take part in exciting internships covering the Washington state Legislature; working for news outlets overseas; study abroad trips to Barbados, Rome and Switzerland; and in-field research supervised by renowned scholars.
