ANTONIO TAGLIARINI dance . performance . theatre . solos and collaborations
"... Irreverent is the dance/theatre of Antonio Tagliarini, born in 1965, dancer performer that invented for himself a dramaturgy/choreography that relates to Buster Keaton comedy like in the new french non-dance. Phisical and verbal gags, visual instalations, street-art, the sistematic negation of cronological consequences, alive presence of the performer that plays going in and out of diferent characters: the nontheatre of Tagliarini is all of this, with a devastating result of comedy and drama. ANTONIO & MIGUEL When we began to think about this creation, and before rerearsals started, we exchanged some impressions trying to find out in which direction our desire to work together again could take us. Ten years ago we met and created a piece, 'Antonio Miguel', a solo done by two, striking a match a striking encounter for us personally and professionally. At that time, in 2000, we had the energy of who starts something for the first time, we believed that we could change something, dance, spectacle, its limits, its conventions and rules, maybe the world. However much has happened on the micro and the macro level, we met and go took different ways, finally, the world did not stop surprising and disappointing us. Now in 2010, we asked ourselves, if we still had this desire to change something, if we had something really important to say through dance and show in addition to our desire to meet again. Then we started to looking around us and we became interested in understanding how we were and how we and the world have been. According to the official calendar a decade has passed, we have entered a new century and a new millennium. What had happened? What impressions stayed from this period? During the process, already in the studio, as we were talking and trying out things, we focused on the time issue. Would we have changed in these ten years? Was there an evolution or would we always talk about the same thing but differently? The time had really produced anything in us, in our body, our energy, the way we looked at life and work. Will the motivation and stimulus we have now be enough to produce anything new? After all, the question remains the same: who are we? Antonio and Miguel (2010)

REWIND: homage to Café Müller by Pina Bausch THEATRE / PERFORMANCE
1978. Café Müller by Pina Bausch. A theatrical heart-attack. An artistic event, a piece of twentieth-century art history. For all of us - too young at the time - Café Müller was a touchstone, a myth, a cliché. Thirty years later we take up Café Müller as a starting point. Today, it is inevitably something else; time has changed it, erased, confused and idolized it; something untouchable and mythical has shattered leaving only sacred ruins. Just ruins, in the end. So now, one can walk among this rubble, pick up and handle it, look at it up close and splinter it further. And finally, it’s possible to laugh. It’s possible to do every and anything with what remains. “Every man kills what he loves”, sang Jeanne Moreau in a Fassbinder film. Therefore, the work is about memory’s betrayals, an attempt at re-invention made up of continuous interruptions and a myriad of little tales on the side, bordering on the autobiographical and total reverie. Thus rewind: an improbable rewinding of time. The chairs, the space, the bodies, the dancing and ourselves today. Far from the redemptive dramatic force of that time. Distant from us, who are weary from having seen too much - a new form of blindness. Perhaps no other recent performance better expresses the complete shattering of the concept of “work of art” as much as Daria Deflorian and Antonio Tagliarini Rewind does: the rewinding itself of Cafè Müller, a monumental work of art of the twentieth century by Pina Bausch, generates a distracting effect without remedy, not even that of the Calder-like lightness of the precarious chair sculptures which take the place of the bodies and drama on stage (…) At the end, the two actors in this melancholy talk show of citations, where even the irony comes and goes following the lulls of expressive energy that assails the show from outside - weakening the rhythm and uncovering the tomb of the real hidden cadaver: time – they confess to one another that they’ve never seen a live performance of Cafè Müller. The sole instrument of their failure of recognition – aside from the show’s “original” chairs bought on E-bay (which obviously are not original at all) – is the video. (...) Rewind of Post-modernism Pina Bausch seen from behind her back, forty-five years after Kennedy’s death by Attilio Scarpellini 20 March 2008
The chairs and the presences that danced in that Cafè Müller, the storic Bausch artists, the sudden lights and the lacks of memory(“maybe I haven’t seen it live”) the storic misics of the show that mark now the personal and private memories of the two on stage, the presence of a totem dancer in tutu, together with so many other moments, draw a sincere, poignant, ambiguous and disturbing. collective memory. As it is often in theatre and in particolar in that one of the biggest master of all times, Saint Pina of Wupertal. The Manifesto, September 21 2008 Gianfranco Capitta
The game is obviously that one, a bit voyeuristic for us spectators that are prived from the images, to make us see, or imagine, or dream, or rave Cafè Müller thanks to the original sounds, the footsteps, the chairs that hit other chairs in the show and, above all, through the in-love words of the two protagonists, that chatter very freely about their lives, about them selves, with unpure divagations about their own family memories, first erotic experiences, about their beginning as artists. From Daria’s childhood in snowy Trentino to Tagliarini’s desire of becoming a dancer not having any reference in his personal or family horizon. Daria, then , felt strange in her family, so creates an ideal ‘all-stars’ family with Pina Bausch as her mother, Pasolini her father, Marilyn Monroe as a sister and Johny Depp as her brother. Daria, in fact with her bony long face, blond pony tali hair, thin nervous body, the hands always moving fluants in a fetishist similarità with Bausch. www.retdidedalus.it, January 2009 Marco Palladini
They influenced their own choices not only the artistic ones, and tell you also with the help of one of the ‘original’ chairs bought online, talking between each other like in a rehearsel that never starts. La Repubblica 17/11/2008 di Nico Garrone
There are choreographies that belong to a common imaginary and don’t need their real presence for us to remind it. And when we remind that memory, what is left of her belongs to another territory, which seems almost invented. “REWIND – homage to Café Müller by Pina Bausch” is a piece about that kind of memory signed by who imaginarily inherited it. Tiago Bartolomeu Costa in Ípsilon / Público 22/09/2010
On stage Daria and Antonio achieved with Rewind the recreation of a passed moment, the moment that is the reproduction of one sensation, and it is much better to see the photo of a painting, because even not being in front of an original, you feel something so authentic that no one can come and tell you that you are only watching a copy. A bitter stupidity crosses Warhol’s philosophy and dialogues with ours. a and d talk, in front of an imaginary interviewer or at the telephone, anyway with another, they talk about nothing, they talk about everything through nothing, alone and always present, always public. Serial loneliness, exposed, that doesn’t want to be solved, that kind of loneliness that wants to be among the others but doesn’t want to be touched. The show goes on in a entertaining way, everything is clear, obvious. But slowly comes a subtle suspicion: what are we watching? Where are we? Where is the show? Is it here on this stage or is it in the world outside? Reality isn’t more than a chat, isn’t more than images from the last movie watched on TV. Couple of artists already known with REWIND, Deflorian and Tagliarini leave the dialog fluxus of the previous work in favour to caustic monologues that design two characters go down in a inhumane, false metropolitan landscape, ruled by the mass communication media that reduce every identity to an insignificant object. Every emotion seems lost in this little theatre of the world that Deflorian and Tagliarini build in radical ‘Debordian’ way, clear and corroborant of his thesis. 20 - 4 - 2009 Mariateresa Surianello
Identity is nothing. Or is an empty Pop explosion in which theatre stops existing and the show could be more real than reality itself, because it reduces into a chat, into the last telefilm we watched on TV. Antonio and Daria talk about life and death like they talk about food, in between dildos and wigs, products and markets, becoming themselves into a product by the evocation of watches, time that passes and death that arrives like a plastic toaster that melts in an orange acrylic table-cloth. 01-04-2009 Matteo Antonaci http://www.teatroteatro.it/recensioni_dettaglio.aspx?uart=2236

Third part of the «representation trilogy»: Freezy, Titolo provvisorio: senza titolo and Show An impossibile self-portrait. A self-interview, many interviews. The confession. I am a presenter, a dancer, a show-man. I am...me, me...who am i? i am my own time. I am my own things. I am my own heroes. I am my own alter ego... i am so many chances that i dissolve, i disappear, i coincide with the space that surrounds me, i coincide with the eyes which look at me and that by looking at me make me feel possible and so real... This work deepens an issue that i have been investigating for years which led me to the creation of “Freezy” and “Titolo provvisorio:senza titolo”, my last two performances. “Show” was born as the third and the last part of the so called «representation trilogy». “Show” is my research: it deals with some questions that i am still wondering despite the awareness that to give an unique and decisive answer is impossible. I am living a time where my presence and my identity are fragile, unsure, confuse. I standing aside of my own things and so i become the core of my work, of my research, of my questions. There is a strange fight and a strong contradiction between being and not being, escaping in order to remark the presence in the absence, the necessity of telling and defining my self... in a continuous game, in a continuous dialectic between introducing and representing myself...between lying and believing to tell the truth... This new creation wants to investigate, to show, to render ridiculous and to bring into question the presence, my own presence indeed: a continuous effort to define myself in relation to myself and the others whom i see into and around me and the continuous failure of my attempts. Both formally and conceptually, this new performance is a work on the idea of fragmentariness, of impossibility, of ridiculousness. As a consequence, the core of my performance has to follow this premise: this show will be consciously deceptive to itself, will block and will collapse... I would like to dwell on the word “ridiculous”. in my performances, people laugh a lot. It is not my will. Comicality is not my aim. I rather work on ridiculous as an exposition of the private side, as an expression of prohibited, of what we would never like be to get known of ourselves. I usually start from something hard, tragic, private, sometimes painful and i really do not know why comicality and thoughtlessness become features of my works.

TEMPORARY TITLE: UNTITLED The space is brightly lit: on stage a chair, a table, a lamp. Everything is in place. A man enters. He lets the audience watch him. He smiles. His expression changes. He cries. A mouse has been squashed, eliminated. A woman kills her husband, and two children. A pair of shoes, fake, speak with eachother before walking into shop window. The crux of the “dramedy” revolves around one obsessive reflection: everything is, at the same time, true and false, real and fake. This theme is developed through the mingling of the tragic, the absurd and the ridiculus. Everything is perceived, thought, filtered, performed. Everything is both inside and outside of my head. Representation can be more real than reality; reality can be more false than a badlytold lie. Antonio Tagliarini

A work that starts with creation and the creative act, which ironically observes the alternation of human actions between building and destroying. Every thing is built and everything is unbuilt, constantly. Ambra Senatore and Antonio Tagliarini are two performers and authors with independent artistic biography. They meet for the first time for this new creation. They watch themselves, they study themselves, they recognize points in common and differences. “ What we know is a fragile and open starting point: we start from something that is banal, simple, oblique. We try continuously to move the point of view of objects and actions. We try to little modify the distance from the customary facts. We try to create confusion from the different layers of the reality, we search doubt zone.” Anbra Senatore & Antonio Tagliarini (july 2008)

ANTONIO TAGLIARINI FULL BIO AND CV
An imaginary interview between an imaginary myself (A) and a tough interviewer (Q) Q: You never stop searching, do you? why? A: I am never enough, I never have enough. Yes, it’s never enough! Q: But who are you? A: Who am I? difficult question! I am everything. I am my jeans, the books that I read, the motorcycle that I ride, the bed that I sleep in, the food that I eat, the music that I listen to, my parents, the haircut I choose, my friends, my love, my shoes, the t-shirt that I’m wearing right now, my work…and more and more… yes, I am all of these things. Q: If you are all of these things then you are nothing. You are only a container of things… Nothing original. A: (Silence, dumbfounded, empty) nothing original, yes! Q: A sort of life patchwork! A: A life patchwork… oh.. that’s not bad! In the "livro do desassossego" (“the book of the unquietness”), Fernando Pessoa observes himself in a photography of group, all in pose in the office where he works from many years. Fernando Pessoa observes the images of the colleagues: they are exactly what they are, he recognizes the somatic characteristics and the essence of everyone; only himself is betrayed to his own eyes, he does not recognize the image of himself, the essence of himself: "I have suffered the truth to see me there, in that photo; who am I?" There is a strange fight, a strong fight, a contradiction between the necessity to define oneself, to identify oneself, to built oneself and the difficulty to recognize oneself. I live the uncertainty: the uncertainty of my body, of my presence, the uncertainty to be in this world, the uncertainty of all that encircles me. I am to the side of myself and therefore I become the object of my art, of my search. In my performances often audience laugh a lot but I never think of that as a goal, as an objective. I work on the ridiculous more like the exposition of intimacy, of what we never want to be known. I often start from something tragic, hard, banal and for a strange alchemy the lightness becomes an essential element of my work. I try to create a space of condivision/sharing: subtle, instable. I try to put on crises all the certainty and the expectations. I try to open a fragile, not comfortable, unknown space. As an artist and a creator I always make myself some questions: How to speak of the contemporary? How to speak to the contemporary? This is an important question: the language is put on discussion: the ‘how” becomes contents. If I speak of contemporary there are its own issues but also the language supports this issue. If the instability, the impossibility and the uncertainty are some of the contemporary issues that I try to touch in my work also the language has to contains this split of the meaning. The language becomes content. In theater I like to show the fiction, to reflect on the concept of representation. Everything is at the same time fake and real. And maybe, only showing the fiction, today, is possible to reach, to move who is in front of me, the audience. PAST My first art education was contemporary dance (my first great love!). Then, that it wasn’t enough: I started to study drama, acting, theater. performance, visual art. I started my career as interpreter. Then it wasn’t enough: I started to research and create my own work. And for now I’m still involve in this research! PRESENT, FUTURE. I’m an artist who likes to research and work alone but in the same time who likes to open himself to cocreation and artistic collaboration with others artists. After I had created three solos and some performance, in 2008 I did two co-creations, one with Daria Deflorian and the other one with Ambra Senatore. This is an important step of my work, my next future projects are co-creations, one, again with Daria Deflorian, one with Idoia Zapaleta, an artist from Basque County, and another with Miguel Pereira. To work with and direct a group of performers is on my mind for a medium future.
