Minimal Letterforms

3

Objective:

Using one of six typefaces, arrange a 4X4 in. display that exhibits the unique characteristics of a specific typeface. Using four different letters from one of the typefaces, arrange them so they relate to one another to create an overall unified composition.

The typeface that I was drawn to was Friz Quadrata because of its whimsical nature and its interesting serifs. I also liked that some of the letterforms weren’t completely closed, particularl the d, p, b, and q.

4

Iterations:

From the iterations I made, I chose these three as the ones I wanted to iterate and test. I realized that I didn’t like the white on black iterations, so I chose to keep them in their original colors.

These iterations proved to be the most dynamic of my other drafts. They all connected to each other well and they flowed almost flawlessly, while keeping the letterforms reognizable.

Type Hierarchy Studies

7

Objective:

Using a provided set of information, create multiple composiions with the set restrictions, beginning with one size and weight of the Univers typeface and ultimately working up to multiple weights and sizes. Take into consideration the way the information is displayed, and the hierarchy necessary to understand the information quickly and clearly, while utilizing a grid.

Set 1 initially required the use of 15 pt. Univers in one weight (Univers 45) and then in two weights at the same size (Univers 45 and 65). In order to make the heirarchy more interesting I wanted to create interesting angles and shapes for the information.

I chose to unalign the three middle sections that describe the three lectures because it looked too uniform with them all aligned.

I liked the flow of the lectures and the angles of each of the sections is seemingly connected to the small box of type on the right.

Set 2:

Set 2 uses a combination of both Univers 45 and 65 along with two sizes, 9 pt. and 15 pt. The second part of set 2 also requires the use of Univers 46 and 66, which are oblique, or italic versions of Univers 45 and 65.

I liked the scattered and seeming randomness of the three sections of each of the lectures, as well as the shapes made by the information.

I intentionally kept this one very vertical and easy to read. This one adheres to a very specific grid and I think it’s very organized.

Set 3:

The first part of set 3 requires the same rules as the second part of set 2, but with the addition of lines and rules. The second part of set 3 negates all the rules, meaning that we had complete creative freedom.

I really liked the idea of a square and aligning the lectures with the lines of the box. I agree with the revision to remove the rules so the text would form the box, but thn I wouldn’t have followed the rules.

I love big type so I used much larger and thicker versions of the Univers family to create a very large, almost poster-like flyer.

Paul Rand Book Design

13

Objective:

Using provided text and images, construct a book using a grid system that effectively presents Paul Rand’s theories on the play instinct.

My initial sketches were a little rough, but I eventually decided that I wanted full page pictures opposite the text that describes them, like the examples on the right.

14

Page Binding:

Cover: 15

After printing my pages out, I started the gluing process, which turned out to be a larger challenge than anticipated. After aligning and re-aligning my pages approximately 30 thousand times to make the edges just right, I crushed it and glued it. Then, after at least 7 coats of PVA glue, the spine finally stayed together.

Once I let the glue dry over night, I printed out my cover and glued that onto my pages. It was difficult to align the pages up precisely with the spine of the book, but once I did, the pages were aligned, the glue dried and then I got it trimmed.

The printed pages look so great and have turned out exactly the way I wanted them to. The text is legible and the pictures are (for the most part) clear and recognizable. The glue has set and the book is done!
