Smoking negatively affects nearly every organ in the human body and is associated with at least 15 different types of cancer. Smoking causes about 30 percent of all cancer-related deaths each year, and causes about 90 percent of all lung cancer cases.
Maintaining a healthy weight can lower your risk of certain types of cancer, especially cancers of the breast, lung, prostate, colon, and kidney. Scientists attribute 14 to 20 percent of all cancer deaths to obesity or being overweight. Fat tissue increases estrogen levels that, in turn, increase the risk for breast cancer; fat cells also release chemicals that stimulate the growth of cancer cells. Obesity also increases the levels of growth factors known as IGF-1; high IGF-1 levels prevent cancer cells from dying.
Regular exercise alone reduces your risk for developing breast or colon cancer. Adults should aim at 30 minutes of moderate exercise on most days of the week, to gain the greatest protection from cancer â€“ 45 to 60 minutes is better.
Avoid the sun, especially during peak radiation periods between 10 am and 4 pm, and do not use indoor tanning beds, to reduce the risk for skin cancer. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or more, as a preventative measure. Accounting for nearly half of all cases of cancer in the United States, skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in this nation. While exposure to x-rays or certain chemicals can cause skin cancer, exposure to the sun is the most common cause.
Eat a Healthy Diet Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants that prevent cell damage caused by chemical reactions to oxygen. To reduce the risk for cancer, eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables every day. A serving is relatively easy to measure â€“ it is usually a single piece, like an apple or banana, or a half-cup of chopped fruits or vegetables. Raw leafy vegetables are the exception, with a whole cup constituting a single serving.
Avoid red meat and processed meats â€“ each is associated with an increased risk for colon cancer. Limit pork and lamb, as well. Choose fresh, whole cuts of fish, poultry, or beans, instead.
Choose smaller, leaner cuts when you do eat meat, and bake, broil or poach meat instead of frying or charbroiling. Cooking meat at high temperatures results in the formation of cancer-causing agents. Other ways to decrease this risk is to marinate meat or fish in lemon or vinegar marinade just before grilling, and to prevent flames from flaring up during the cooking process.
Limit intake of fried vegetable products, such as French fries and chips. Avoid trans fats altogether. Choose whole grain bread, pasta, rice, and cereal, over refined and processed foods, especially pastries, sugar-sweetened cereals, and other sugary foods.
