FRONT COVER ARTIST Bernard Langlais, Untitled (Self-Portrait), ca. 1955 oil on canvas, Colby College Museum of Art, The Bernard Langlais Collection, Gift of Helen Friend Langlais, 2010.361 Photograph by Pixel Acuity

Bernard Langlais (1921-1977) Known for his monumental wall reliefs from the 1960s and sculptures of animals from the 1970s, Maine-born artist Bernard Langlais (1921-1977) created a rich and diverse oeuvre in his 56 years. From modernist painter to visionary environment builder, Langlais was driven by a deep sense of place and an unrelenting search for materials and subjects that reconciled his rural roots with postwar artistic movements and ideologies. Langlais’s art has special resonance with the state of Maine. While he forged his early career in Europe and New York City, the lure of his home state would ultimately bring the artist back to the land that would prove uniquely suited to his art making. A native son, Langlais was born in Old Town in 1921, attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture for summer sessions between 1949 and 1951, and spent the last decade of his life (1966–1977) in Cushing, where he created the work for which he is best known today. Celebrating the 2010 bequest to Colby College of more than 170 Langlais artworks by the artist’s widow, Helen Friend Langlais, the Colby College Museum of Art will present the first scholarly retrospective of Langlais’s dynamic career. The Bernard Langlais Exhibition examines works of art created along the remarkable trajectory of Langlais’s career, and unites for the first time the artist’s vibrant, painted renderings of Norwegian pines and Maine summer foliage with his abstract reliefs of stained and painted wood and his whimsical figurative sculptures. The exhibition is drawn primarily from the Colby Museum’s extensive Langlais holdings and will be accompanied by a richly illustrated monograph with essays by Hannah W. Blunt, Diana Tuite, Vincent Katz, Leslie Umberger, Nina Roth-Wells and Ronald Harvey. The Bernard Langlais Exhibition will be shown July 19 through January 4, 2015 at the Colby College Museum of Art, 5600 Mayflower Hill Drive, Waterville, ME 04901. 207-859-5600, www.colby.edu/museum 18

Maine Art on the March Maine art is a universe that is ever expanding. World class collections are being exhibited in Maine museums at the same time Maine artists are featured in key NYC and West Coast galleries. The Lunder Collection, comprised of more than 500 works showcasing major strengths of 19th and 20th-century American and contemporary art, has a new permanent home at Colby College’s Museum of Art. The Portland Museum of Art exhibited 62 works from the Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA) collection “The William S. Paley Collection: A Taste for Modernism.” The Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock received a gift of 290 watercolors and drawings by the great Maine modernist John Marin, a gift courtesy of Norma B. Marin. And at the time of this writing, The Currator Gallery in New York City is showing six artists in “Second Nature: Abstract Art from Maine.” If you are looking to see Maine art up close for yourself, the guide you are holding is your best tool. Keep it in your glove compartment as you tour our state, and use it to make wonderful discoveries of your own. If you would like to expand your art horizons, consult our calendar to see openings and shows in the area, and make it a point to attend. Open yourself to new art and meeting new artists and interesting art lovers. You may end up hanging a new acquisition on your wall, one that becomes a new favorite. Maine + Art. Enjoy the two together with us as your guide. Cheers,

GREATER PORTLAND

Richard Estes, “Water Taxi, Mount Desert” 1999, oil on canvas, 35" x 66" 1/4 “Richard Estes’ Realism” is a new exhibition organized by the Portland Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. This exhibition is the most comprehensive survey since 1991 of the paintings of Richard Estes, the foremost practitioner of American photorealism. The exhibition offers new perspectives into Estes as a painter both of the urban and natural worlds, balancing his interest in the dense fabric of New York and other large cities with his close attention to the coast of Maine and the woods of Mount Desert Island, where he has spent part of each year since the late 1970s. Most recently, Estes imbued images of New York City at night with sunlit luminosity. Select examples of Estes’ rare portraits will also be included in the exhibition. This five-decade survey of his paintings reveals an artistic vision that is both deeply rooted in European and American art history, and consistently engaged with fundamental and contemporary questions of representation, form, and surface. “Richard Estes’ Realism” runs May 22 through September 7 at the Portland Museum of Art.

As part of the Farnsworth Museum’s 65th anniversary celebration, Robert Indiana’s iconic sculpture LOVE has undergone a complete restoration by sculpture conservator Paul Amaral. Assessing the condition of the sculpture, determining how safely to remove the existing paint, deciding on the basis of chemical analysis what kind of paint is best suited for repainting the sculpture, matching the color, determining how the sculpture should be painted, and then outlining a program for ongoing care for LOVE are all part of the carefully articulated and carefully executed process for restoring one of the best known examples of American art.

The Wine Cellar Gallery at John Edwards Market in Ellsworth is a busy scene during bimonthly art openings. The gallery’s mission supports talented local artists and encourages the community in their patronage. The spacious exhibition room displays modernist and contemporary art by worldclass Maine artists. Photo by A. Anderson

The Tides Institute & Museum of Art in Eastport opened StudioWorks last summer in an ambitious project to redevelop a historical building into studio facilities for artists. Ground floor studios are dedicated production space for letterpress, printmaking and digital operations and workshop/classroom space. Eastport is a charming artist community with many interesting galleries, studios, The Tides Museum and views of the Passamaquoddy Bay. Well worth the drive. 92

Islesford Dock Gallery on Little Cranberry Island offers plein air painting classes by master painters Ashley Bryan and Henry Isaacs. The Islesford Workshops, now in their sixth year, are for novices through professionals. Two sessions in early September offer a memorable three day island experience. Ashley Bryan is a long- time Islesford resident and recipient of many national awards. Henry Isaacs received degrees in painting and printmaking from RISD and has taught art in Britain, Italy, and the U.S.

SevenArts Gallery celebrated a Cherry Blossom Festival last spring. The artist members recreated a Japanese tea ceremony, tried on kimonos and presented Japanese music and customs to the public led by artist member Wendilee Heath O’Brien. SevenArts is a co-op gallery located in the lively Maine Grind building on Main Street, downtown Ellsworth.

Located on the border between New England and the Atlantic Provinces, the Tides Institute & Museum of Art (TIMA) looks out to sweeping views of neighboring Canadian islands. The Institute’s activities reflect this cross-border perspective. TIMA acts both a cultural resource and catalyst with collections, summer exhibitions, programs and a developing nearby StudioWorks facility combined with artist residency program space. TIMA is the first Maine institution to receive funding from the national ArtPlace initiative with their support for TIMA’s regional, cross-border, and wide ranging Artsipelago project. 43 Water Street, P.O. In his heyday, John Marin was America’s most celebrated artist. Marin began visiting Maine in 1914 to camp and paint during the summers. He purchased his house on Cape Split in Addison in 1934 and painted there until his death in 1953. His painting “Tunk Mountains” was the cover art on the 2013 Maine Gallery + Studio Guide. Cape Split is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled settings on the Coast of Maine, and a wonderful spot to tour on the way to the Eastport art community. Photo by Anthony Anderson

RICHARD TUTTLE: Prints – A Retrospective Offering new insight into his artistic practice, Richard Tuttle: Prints–A Retrospective represents the first comprehensive examination of the prints of this leading contemporary artist. The projects featured in this groundbreaking exhibition reflect Tuttle’s deep interest in the relationship between medium, tools, actions, and collaboration. Recasting the unique possibilities of multiple printmaking processes, Tuttle raises intriguing questions about technique, materiality, and the nature of art itself.
