SILVER SAGE Housing Corporation

High Quality Affordable Housing

History

Silver Sage Housing Corporation (SSHC) was established on November 8, 1983, by Saskatchewan First Nation Community members. The corporation was formed to address the shelter needs of Regina and area First Nation Communities. In April of 1984 Silver Sage purchased their first 30 homes. An additional 20 were purchased shortly thereafter bringing the total to 50 homes; all to improve the quality of life for Urban First Nations peoples. The housing portfolio for SSHC grew to 395 by 1994.

Mission

To provide and promote high quality affordable housing for First Nations people living in urban centres.

In 2000, SSHC took over management from the File Hills Qu’Appelle Tribal Council (FHQTC) Rural and Native housing, which consisted of 63 units in the towns of Fort Qu’Appelle, Indian Head and Sintaluta.

In 2003, SSHC also took over management of the Homelessness units. The housing portfolio that SSHC either owned or managed now totalled 468 units. The purpose of transferred management from FHQTC was to keep as many of the initiatives and programs together rather than having them administered separately.

Goals

• To maintain the current 500 units at a high standard.

• To complete the 26 unit Elders Lodge and significantly improve the quality of life for our Elders. • To help improve the quality of life for First Nation tenants through the provision of safe, affordable housing and through yearly inspection and if needed provide referral services which meet the needs of the clients.

Future Goals

To increase organization self-sufficiency to ensure long-term growth by:

• Acquiring an office and commercial property which includes a workshop and warehouse space.

• Exploring and developing alternative funding initiatives by “thinking outside of the box” to increase the housing stock. i.e.: investing in other profitable business’ that will enable future purchases or new build units.

• Developing the staff skills to specialize in areas that will ensure the safety of the tenants and become a valuable resource to tenants who wish to become home-owners. i.e.: mold remediation specialist, air quality specialist, and budget specialist this will ensure operational efficiency.
