Comprehensive Claim vs. Specific Claim Over the years, community members have asked questions about Canada’s Aboriginal claims’ policies. What is a ‘comprehensive claim’? And, what is a ‘specific claim’?

Here’s how Canada describes the two different types of claims:

Comprehensive Claims: These deal with the unfinished business of treaty-making in Canada. These claims arise in areas of Canada where Aboriginal land rights have not been dealt with by past treaties or through other legal means.


Specific Claims: Deal with past grievances of First Nations related to Canada's obligations under historic treaties, or the way it managed First Nations' funds or other assets. (Source:

On October 9, 2012, the three Mi’gmaq communities of Gesgapegiag, Gespeg and Listuguj reaffirmed their ‘Principles of Engagement.’ The Declaration renewed the alliance of the Mi’gmawei Mawiomi, it states:

“This Declaration renews the commitment of our Assembly towards Treaty Implementation and our position against extinguishment; we will never cede nor extinguish our Aboriginal Rights nor Title to Gespe’gewa’gi.”

Mi’gmawei Mawiomi is working to advance a ‘Comprehensive Claim’ with Canada and Quebec over Gespe’gewa’gi. Mi’gmaq remain committed to protect, promote and implement rights and title throughout Gespe’gewa’gi, Mi’gma’gi.
