It has been a whirlwind semester so far, and if last year taught me anything, this is the ―calm‖ before the spring storm. As overwhelming as that notion seems, I believe that we will come through it successfully. If this fall semester is any indication of the ability of our members, the spring will be a cinch. I’d like to acknowledge some of the accomplishments of our members in the past few months. In October, our Board of Directors was very well represented at the APICS International Conference in Pittsburgh as our Vice President Lance Pangan, our Treasurer Rafael Zveibil, and our Director of Communications Ken Chen were all selected for the APICS Scholars Program. In November, our members were very well represented at the BCIT School of Business awards. Members Anna Le Good, Andrew Stasiewski, Lance Pangan and Rafael Zveibil were recognized for their achievements in academics and their involvement at school. Congratulations to all the award winners! I am proud to be an APICS member when I see the great achievements of my fellow members. Good luck to everybody in the coming year.

That is why the right attitudes and the necessary skills are needed to build good rapport with people you want to connect with. Moreover, Tom encouraged communicating effectively by being aware of our body language and voice inflection. These two make up most of how people communicate, a lot more than just the words we use. Looking for overlapping ―frames of reference‖ or common backgrounds, understandings, beliefs, experiences, and common interests can also help in relating to others easier. Finally, showing appreciation when parting is very important because the present moment is always connected to the future. Going to this educational session taught very valuable life lessons that are essential not just in building a successful career, but also in maintaining lasting relationships with people.

BC Ferries Plant Tour Write Up by Joyti Sundaram

We were told about the purchase and ordering processes and how BC ferries manages their many vendors. Their aim is not always to acquire the cheapest product, but the best product that meets engineering specifications, even on the smallest items such as nuts and bolts, which if faulty, could bring damage to high value machinery. Instead of giving a big order to one supplier, they prefer to order from a short list of preferred vendors in order to minimize the risk of being shorted on an order.

Last month our APICS club was invited to tour BC Ferries Procurement and Distribution offices in Richmond. By going on this tour I felt that the whole course was given to us like a capsule easy to swallow. E-tools for Teams at BCIT By Jaclyn Chang On your marks, get set, go! Coming into the first year of the Operations Management program at BCIT I was prepared for what I had been told will be the hardest and busiest two years of my life. With my first two weeks full of anticipation and anxiety, I waited for ―it‖ to come and in week three, ―it‖ finally arrived! Here it was, individual assignments, case studies, and oral presentations. Team projects, team meetings, boot camp and volleyball, not to mention all of the reading and homework exercises. It became clear very quickly that in order for me to keep organized and on track I needed help.

Many of the parts that are distributed are very heavy, for example: a single propeller blade ordered to Swartz bay in Victoria could cost several hundred dollars to ship via a third party based on its massive weight. Therefore it is less costly for BC ferries to operate its own fleet of delivery vehicles.

I signed up and attended the E-Tools seminar lead by Alex Opisov from the 2nd year of the Operations Management program. Alex introduced a group of us to some of the tools he and his 2nd year team members found helpful to manage their busy schedules and work efficiently and virtually.

October 20 Fraser Valley PDM Write Up by Nic Gaylord On the evening of October 20, 2011 a group of BCIT students attended the APICS Fraser Valley Professional Dinner Meeting at Newlands Golf Club in Langley. We entered a very nicely organize banquet room with tables set up for dinner and a presentation area. After mingling with professionals from the Operations Field, for dinner we were encouraged to spread out to different tables and mix in with other people. Throughout the dinner there was very interesting conversation at our table. In particular one man was the Materials Manager at an aerospace manufacturer and another, the Materials Manager at a plastic packaging manufacturer. The thing that floored me was that both of these guys knew about the BCIT Op Man program and one of them actually had two project teams doing their level 3 process improvement projects with his company! Talk about exposure to the industry! When it came down the presentation, the guest speaker was no other than a BCIT part time instructor – Chris Butterworth who was also a Six Sigma Master Black Belt. He started, speaking of the costs of quality with an emphasis on the 80/20 Pareto distribution. He then transitioned into human error and ways to create foolproof systems and designs by eliminating areas that could cause potential human error problems. Surrounding the whole presentation was the general goal of using problem solving techniques to reduce variation in processes to save organization money.

In the 1-hour seminar Alex walked us through an introduction of Google Calendar, Google Documents, Gmail and Dropbox where he explained to us how and when to use these tools. By using a Google calendar I now have my class schedule, assignments, projects, tests and extra curricular activities all organized. I receive emails to remind me of important dates to keep me on track and never miss a deadline. My team and I now use Dropbox to share files instead of bogging down our email accounts and Google docs to brainstorm our ideas for assignments and projects, allowing us to be anywhere working on one document together at the same

In the 1-hour seminar Alex walked us through an introduction of Google Calendar, Google Documents, Gmail and Dropbox where he explained to us how and when to use these tools. By using a Google calendar I now have my class schedule, assignments, projects, tests and extra curricular activities all organized. I receive emails to remind me of important dates to keep me on track and never miss a deadline. My team and I now use Dropbox to share files instead of bogging down our email accounts and Google docs to brainstorm our ideas for assignments and projects, allowing us to be anywhere working on one document together at the same

It has been a whirlwind semester so far, and if last year taught me anything, this is the ―calm‖ before the spring storm. As overwhelming as that notion seems, I believe that we will come through it successfully. If this fall semester is any indication of the ability of our members, the spring will be a cinch. I’d like to acknowledge some of the accomplishments of our members in the past few months. In October, our Board of Directors was very well represented at the APICS International Conference in Pittsburgh as our Vice President Lance Pangan, our Treasurer Rafael Zveibil, and our Director of Communications Ken Chen were all selected for the APICS Scholars Program. In November, our members were very well represented at the BCIT School of Business awards. Members Anna Le Good, Andrew Stasiewski, Lance Pangan and Rafael Zveibil were recognized for their achievements in academics and their involvement at school. Congratulations to all the award winners! I am proud to be an APICS member when I see the great achievements of my fellow members. Good luck to everybody in the coming year.
