(IN)FORMAL SETTLEMENTS: HOUSING THE URBAN POOR BARANGAY 648, SAN MIGUEL, MANILA, PHILIPPINES GRADUATE THESIS PROJECT AR 902-903

Informal settlements comprise of a third of the world’s population, and this percentage continues to grow. The design intent of this project is to provide formal housing for the informal settlers of Barangay 648 in San Miguel, Manila, Philippines, while keeping the community intact. This formal housing allows for expansion as population grows, or as expansion becomes financially feasible for the residents. This project provides for a supportive architecture that empowers people.

CHARLOTTE OLYMPIA BOUTIQUE RODEO DRIVE, BEVERLY HILLS, LOS ANGELES AR 901

The design of the boutique came from the design of Charlotte Olympia shoes—fun, retro-inspired shoes. The design is based on the idea of 1950’s diner, more specifically, the idea of a shoe bar.

PAMPANGA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER CLARK FREEPORT ZONE, PAMPANGA, PHILIPPINES AR 803

Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga is a burgeoning financial and tourist destination in the Philippines. A perfoming arts center will attract more tourism and bring performing arts closer to the locals of Pampanga. The design is based on the indigenous weaving pattern of local crafts.

MEGASTRUCTURE SAN DIEGO, CA AR 704

The premise of the project is a dramatic sea-level rise and the need for a self-sustaining mass housing is great. The solution is to create a megastruture of housing. The design is based on the combination and aggregation of modules. The form is determined by the rules of aggregation.

VOLUMINOUS VOID: MASS OF LIGHT SANT’ANDREA AL QUIRINALE, ROME, ITALY NSA+D ROME SUMMER PROJECT 2011 The geometry is elliptical in shape, disected by paths of light. The shape contains the light. Light enters from nine perforations on the dome and perforations from the cupola. The paths of light travels diagonally, illuminating the dome and lower church. The ambition is to create a void that has volume created by light, a mass of light. The different gradients of light create a volume. Light also accentuatess the color of the marble; with each movement of light, the colors of the marble change. The object represents the condition of light creating a mass in the void as seen in Sant’Andrea al Quirinale. The object is created from one repeating pattern. It is then lit and the light passing through the voids create a mass. *Model showcased in Domus Academy in Milan, Italy Materials: basswood


MOCK FIRM ARCHITECTURE SKYSCRAPER COMPETITION BEIJING, CHINA IN COLLABORATION WITH KEVIN COLBERT, DANIEL KWAK AND RODRIGO VILLALON

The structure is a mixed-used commercial, office, hotel and residential spaces. The central hub contains an observation deck, market, perfomance hall and museum. The form is generated by the reorganization of programmatic spaces with views, wind direction and shadow orientation in mind. The structure is also equipped with wind turbines in order to generate power.
