From the Desk of Fr. Matthew My brothers and sisters in Christ, This month we are continuing our journey through Great and Holy Lent, a time set aside by the Church for intense self-examination and prayer. Instead of viewing the forty-day fasting period as a burden or disruption, we are called to view the Lenten fast as an opportunity to reorient our priorities and actively strive to place God first in our lives. We are also given more opportunities to pray and worship God through the additional services offered during this time. Please make every attempt to attend these services, and I pray that this Lenten season will be a time of spiritual renewal for all of us. Great Compline The service of Great Compline can be offered on many days through the Lenten period, but Monday evenings seem to be the custom in many of our Orthodox parishes. The compline service has monastic roots and has been adapted and adopted for use in the parish setting. This service is traditionally offered after the evening meal and includes the hymn “Lord of the Powers” (Κύριε τών Δυνάµεων). The Pre-Sanctified Liturgy The Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts is offered on Wednesday evenings during Lent. The structure for this service is unique because it incorporates elements from both the Vespers service and the Divine Liturgy. During this service, there is no consecration of the Gifts.

This consecration has already taken place within the previous Sunday’s Divine Liturgy. On the previous Sunday, the priest prepares two Lambs and offers them to be consecrated. After they are consecrated by the Holy Spirit, the priest places the Lamb to be used during the PreSanctified service on another disk or paten, and he makes a procession with the Lamb held high in the air to the other side of the Holy Altar. The Salutations to the Theotokos & the Akathist Hymn The Salutations to the Theotokos chanted on Friday evenings is considered by many to be the most beautiful service of Great and Holy Lent. There are four Salutations to the Theotokos in addition to the full Akathist Hymn offered during Great Lent. The Akathist Hymn is an ecclesiastical poem, which relates to us the relationship the Virgin Mary has with God and with us. The Akathist Hymn consists of twenty-four stanzas broken into four sections, each consisting of six stanzas. Each of the four sections is changed individually on the first four Fridays of Great and Holy Lent. On the fifth Friday of the Lenten period the entire hymn (all twenty-four stanzas) is chanted without sitting. In fact, the title of this service can be literally translated as The Hymn Without Sitting. During the Akathist Hymn we chant “O Champion General” (Τη Υπερµάχω).

President’s March Letter Dear Fellow Parishioners: Καλο Μενα! The Parish Council has been busy addressing several projects in various areas. To help accomplish the timely completion of these projects, we have set up a Facilities Committee. Philip Brown has accepted the position of Facilities Manager, with Gus Argeris and Andy Watson as members of this committee. Any suggestions or problems concerning facilities should be referred to them. The Parish Council also approved two new appointments to the Festival Committee. The Festival Committee is composed of the following: Michael Stamitoles, Susie Argeris, Philip Brown, Andy Watson, Tina Russell, George Apostle and myself. As we enter Great and Holy Lent, my hope is that our Church family will grow in their faith and experience God’s abundant love. There will be many chances to experience this and I hope you will attend the scheduled services. I ask for your prayers, support and patience as I begin my tenure as Parish Council President. With God’s help and yours, we will continue to grow into a vibrant community. Respectfully,

Heidi D. Silivos Parish Council President

Sunday Church School

Thank you to those of you who joined us for the Philoptochos membership brunch on February 10th. It was surely not the best weather and I appreciate those of you who made the effort to attend. Thank you also to Sissy and Andy Watson for the lovely meal, and to Gloria Lind who helped with decorations. To those ladies who would like to join, membership cards are located in a basket at the hall, please fill one out and give to any of the board members. Philoptochos is also starting an “Item of the Month” program. We will be featuring one of our local charities to assist each month. We will have a box located on the stage whereby we will be collecting typically one particular item during the entire month. Feel free to bring items the entire month. I will be listing what item we will be collecting each month. For the month of March, we will be supporting the Council on Aging and they would like any incontinence item such as bed-liners or adult padded undergarments.

During the month of March we will be preparing for our Annunciation feastday program on Sunday, March 25. Please make efforts to attend each Sunday in March, especially on the 25th for the Feast Day of our parish! We are always in need of snacks and small water bottles for Sunday school classes. If you are able to help out with this please bring items to your child’s classroom on Sundays. Thank you for your help!

Apolytikion of the Annunciation Today is the beginning of our salvation. And the revelation of a mystery which was hidden from eternity. The Son of God becomes the Virgin’s Son. And Gabriel announces the grace of this good news. Let us also join with him, calling to the Theotokos: Rejoice, O woman full of grace. The Lord is with you.
