August 2018

From the Desk of Fr. Matthew My brothers and sisters in Christ, I had the privilege of representing our Annunciation community at the 44th biennial Clergy Laity Congress for our Holy Archdiocese. We also had Presvytera Emily, Heidi Silivos, and Athena Staviski from our community, and we all had the opportunity to participate in a variety of uplifting ministry discussions, as well as some administrative discussions for the Archdiocese as well as Philoptochos. There were over 1,200 representatives from all over the United States, accounting for roughly 2/3 of all Greek Orthodox parishes in America. The theme of the Clergy Laity Congress this year was “All Things Are Possible to the One Who Believes in Christ (Mark 9:23). This theme reminds us of the reality that we will encounter obstacles and difficulties in our lives, both personally and professionally, but when we have faith in Jesus Christ, all things will be possible in our lives. The Church is not immune to difficulties. Throughout history, the devil has tried to divide Christians from their relationship with Christ. Schisms, heresies, and dissension have been tools used by the devil to prevent the Gospel of Jesus Christ being spread. The Good News is that Christ will always be victorious over the devil! Christ defeated the devil and death for all human beings through His Crucifixion and Resurrection. When we become more spiritually minded and less earthly minded, we will see the glory of God in our lives and in the lives of those around us.

As delegates at our Clergy Laity Congress, we learned that our Archdiocese had some financial mismanagement. Essentially, our Archdiocese was not operating on a balanced budget. For a period of time, the Archdiocese was operating on a deficit, but there were very generous benefactors who donated money at the end of the year to balance the budget. Unfortunately, these benefactors have fallen asleep in the Lord, and the Archdiocese moved money from various restricted accounts to balance the budget, a practice that our hierarchs and parishes were unaware was happening. Through the hard work and dedication of many wonderful and talented volunteers, our Archdiocese is in much better financial shape. After making budget cuts and staff reductions, our Archdiocese has restored the money to the various restricted accounts. There is still a lot of work to be done, but God is blessing us, and good things are happening to our national Church. I encourage all of you to visit to view the financial reports and summary documents presented to the delegates at our Clergy Laity Congress. Most importantly, I encourage all of you to pray for our Archdiocese; to pray for our hierarchs; to pray for our clergy; to pray for our parishes; and to pray for all of the faithful Orthodox Christians throughout the United States and the world. Together, let us strive to strengthen our relationship with Christ, so that through His love for all of us, all things will be possible.

Parish Council Monthly Report Dear Fellow Parishioners: August is already upon us and many families are busy with summer adventures and travels. I hope that everyone is enjoying a safe and rewarding summer. We are pleased to announce that the hall kitchen improvements are nearing completion. The Parish Council has a surprise planned for the community as soon as the kitchen improvements are completed. Let’s pray for a speedy completion of the kitchen project so we can enjoy the surprise. A Security Committee has been formed to help maintain a safe and secure environment for our parishioners, consisting of Gus Argeris, Kyle Gatzmeyer, Doug White, Peter Kantrales, Greg Staviski, Stanley Pagonis, Bill Markopoulos, with Andy Watson, as our Parish Council liaison. The Parish Council, along with the Facilities Management Team, want to thank Giles (Skip) Brown for all his time and hard work on our sprinkler system, the installation of our last two handrails for the hall, and the removal and installation of our new door in the kitchen; thank you, Skip! As you may have noticed, the Facilities Committee is still busy at work. If you have a few hours to spare, please volunteer your talent. The reward of fellowship and accomplishment is gratifying. We are still looking for volunteers to help during the three-day 2018 Pensacola Greek Festival. As you all know this is the largest fundraising event that our church conducts. We are reaching out to and encouraging our new members, as well as those who have grown up in the church, to step forward and help with this wonderful event. The Festival Committee is working hard to make sure that this year will run as smoothly as last year. We will be publishing dates for cooking and preparing the many dishes that go into this event. If you have questions about how you may help, please be sure to ask any of the Parish Council members. Respectfully,

Heidi D. Silivos Parish Council President

Philoptochos I hope each of you had a wonderful summer. As most of you know, I attended the Clergy Laity convention held in Boston in the beginning of July. It was an uplifting and informative experience getting together with over 350 other Philoptochos ladies throughout the country. In the upcoming months, I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of the information I received. The next few months are going to be quite busy in preparation for our annual festival. Anyone wishing to help with cook days are asked to check the schedule and join in. There is going to be a brief meeting following the coffee fellowship on Sunday, August 26. Anyone not currently a member of Philoptochos is welcome to join us. Looking forward to a wonderful year! Sunday Church School Please join us on Sunday, August 12 for the back to school blessing (see flyer). Sunday Church School begins on Sunday, September 9! We’re looking forward to another wonderful year with our children as we share with them our love for God and offer educational opportunities for them to grow in their Orthodox Christian faith. Parents: Be sure to register your children for the 2018-2019 church school year. Registration forms are available in the hall.

Vacation Church School (VCS) This year’s VCS was held June 4 – 8 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. We had 22 children attend during the week this year! The theme was Going For the Gold: The Feasts of the Triumph of Christ and His Church! and the children learned all about the feasts of Palm Sunday, Ascension, Pentecost and the Elevation of the Holy Cross. At the end of the week the children recited a verse they learned from memory and were able to sing two church hymns. They had a great time learning, praying, making crafts and having fun with their Olympic themed games! Many thanks to: Fr. Matthew who led our opening prayer sessions and music lessons; our director and PreK – 2nd grade classroom teacher Presv. Emily; our 3rd– 5th grade classroom teachers Anastasia Ta and Sarah Larson; Liz Gilmore (games and recreation); Diane Roumbos and Katelyn Cole (arts & crafts); Stephanie Cole, Garrett Cole, Chris Cole, and Fran Barker (meal and snack preparation); Heidi Silivos (Wednesday lunch); and Phillip Brown (altar boy director for Friday’s Divine Liturgy). Thank you also to all of the parents, grandparents, family members and parishioners who helped during the week: Deb-b Alexakos, Chrissy Alexakos, Marianthe Brown, Sihin Enznew, Chris Hall, Stephanie Hall, Lillia Knight, Demetra Morres, Patricia Pappas, Tina Varvouris, Andy Watson, Rylie White; and to Rose Thames and Jonathon Thames who helped with office and administrative tasks. Whether you helped all week, for a few days, or a few hours, we appreciate all that you did to make the week a success! Thank you also to this year’s donors: Peter & Megan Bithos, Krissy Kritselis, William & Lynette Paulcheck, Agnes Stergion, Phyllis Tringas and Tina Varvouris. We appreciate your support of Vacation Church School!

Apolytikion of the Annunciation Today is the beginning of our salvation. And the revelation of a mystery which was hidden from eternity. The Son of God becomes the Virgin’s Son. And Gabriel announces the grace of this good news. Let us also join with him, calling to the Theotokos: Rejoice, O woman full of grace. The Lord is with you.
